I love his first two impressions of Cologne: Wow, that's a really big church! (it's 157 meters tall and 144 meters long. I guess you can climb up to a height of 140 meters, excitement added another zero 😅) But look at this Döner! That's absolutely genious! Best thing ever! ! This is why you have to visit Germany!!! 😂
The train from Frankfurt Central via Frankfurt airport to Cologne drives on a special track constructed primarily next to the Autobahn A3. But it is an ICE sprinter train going up to 300km/h. So the trip takes roughly an hour with two stops along the way (assuming the Deutsche Bahn doesn't flub it like usual 😂). Edit: warning, once you taste a good Döner you'll be hooked for life. You will crave it again and again. It's like crack, heroin, and cocaine rolled into one for the addiction level, but fortunately it doesn't hurt your health (as much) unless you over eat.😂 Edit 2: cathedrals like the Kölner Dom were conceptualized during the times of extreme Christian dominance in Europe. The church was everywhere, and involved in everything. Even kings took their legitimation from the heavenly mandate of their divinely inspired rulership. Something we today can't understand anymore, but it was commonplace (and at least accepted, by the general populace). People craved paradise at the end of their lives. They believed if they participated in the construction of a cathedral, the physical representation of God on Earth, a house of worship, they'd be assured a place in heaven after death. Or at least have a much shorter period in purgatory. The participation amount mattered a LOT back then. If you worked physically you'd have a good chance but if you donated huge amounts of money your chance was even greater. As such the Catholic church (mind you, when they started there was ONLY the Catholic church, period; protestantism hadn't occured yet) built cathedrals all over the place. Each city wanted to demonstrate their wealth as well as devotion to the church by building the biggest cathedral around. Obviously static calculations were, let's say, rudimentary back then. Building accidents were rampant as walls or pillars collapsed, or changes to the structure were made during the construction period. Even if the payment of menial physical workers was a pittance, skilled labor was fairly well paid, so wages still dug deep into the coffers of the builders. Considering that often times the officials behind the construction were corrupt and dipped their greedy fingers into said coffers regularly didn't really help matters. That drove up the cost of the construction to astronomical heights, often bankrupting the local parish. Or at least halting the construction period until the next donation drive had gathered enough money for the next construction phase. The original architects knew that they themselves would never see their project finished in their own life span, yet they were willing to do it anyway, out of a fervent belief in the scholastic (original meaning, not the modern meaning) teachings of the Church. They believed that they had started a long lasting work in the praise of God which would ultimately grant them access to heaven.
Also it's a different thing to walk up stairs or a ramp. And it also depends on the steps of the stairs. Stairs like the ones in the dome of cologne aren't friendly to human knees, since they are pretty worn out over all that time they are harder to walk on than more modern stairs are.
13:50 Sorry to disappoint you, but it does look like stuff you can see on a day-to-day basis. Cologne might be a bit/A LOT bigger than the rest, but such places are all across Germany. 14:40 Cologne is built on top of a roman city / is the continuation of a roman city. Old roman ruins are found underneath houses and are preserved for archaeological / historical purposes.
One of the main things i miss from back in the day when i was stationed in Heidelberg was going to the doner place near the maktplatz. It was by far one of the absolute best price for quality foods you could get. a guy i served with went back a few years ago and i guess the place was still their and what they said was it was just as good as we remember. Germany is such a cool place, yeah it has its issues, at least my son who is growing up there feels that way. But honestly it was such an amazing place for me.. super nice people.. good food... cool drinks..
Cola mixed with orange soda is called "kalter Kaffee" (cold coffee). Coca Cola named it Mezzo Mix, but there's also a Pepsi version (Schwip Schwap) and so on.
By the way: The highest Dome Tower in Germany, better said even the whole world, has the UImer Münster. 161 meter while the Kölner Dom is "just" at 157 meter.
The construction of Cologne Cathedral began in the year 1248. The building was officially finished in 1880... But the cathedral will probably never be fully finished; a lot of things now need to be restored
I can only say it again and again, feel free to hit me up if you ever come to Germany and I'll show you around Nuremberg Edit: he said mezzo mix/ spezi tastes like cola and orange soda...this is exactly what it is. 2. Its roughly 600steps to the top. There is a difference between running a few hundred meters and actually walking stairs somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes. I'm pretty athletic but let me tell you...at some point those steps just feel like hell 😂
I love "Döner", difficult to eat by tasty! It's a whole meal and used to cost about 4,50 € but nowdays become really expensive (6,-). And the cathedral of cologne is definitly impressing, just like many other cathedrals in Germany (go to Dresden, it's a beautiful city! Ulm or Speyer and many others are great too)
@@fifapro3216 yes and it was about 3,- € for non students and there even was a time it was about 3,- DM ... How many years back you want to go? About 4,- to 4,50 was the regular price for probably the past 10 years, at least in all cities I lived in.
Mix fanta and coca cola 1:1, then you have mezzo. This is still how it is done in restaurants here. When the owners are old, you don't order "mezzo" but "cold coffee" to get it, but that is slowly dying out
I really love hearing you say that you will take at least one month of time to discover some German places! And I guess if you had been here before you wouldn't have chosen Finland. (No offence, Dear Fins! Just my opinion when I see his fascination for Germany). So, in case you come and you like what you see........ would you consider to move again? I'd love to see you in my home country because you are such a nice and open minded guy, I really appreciate your videos and the way you regard the most things and topics!
Thank you Definitely no offense to the Finn’s indeed but for Europe it was also the UK because I have family there a lot Then Germany I always had an attraction to them because of cars and I’ve always heard Germans are tall and German stuff are really good but after seeing Germany on video it’s easily a country in Europe I’d live in if I had the chance.
@@giobozzde wow, great to hear that. (This German Granny isn't tall at all! LoL) I can well imagine to live in one of the Northern Countries of Europe, but I am a "permanently feeling cold" person, so, well...... I guess I'll never need to learn the Fin's language, haha!.
The Döner-love is still a bit funny to me xD But I also lived in Germany my whole live and have like five places to get one at a max of 15 minutes away from me. It's the best hangover food! (Or when you're drunk and want something at like 2 am on your way home.) But I also know of a german sports star for the decathlon, I think, that lives in Austin (?) Texas in the US. And he comes home to germany and the first thing to do for him is eating one or two Döner.
I feel bad for him. There are so many awesome things that he could see. Only in 1 or 2 days. I live in the same state then cologne is an work as a tour bus driver and train driver and I promise you , there are unbelievable places in Germany you wouldn’t see when you don’t know them.
"It doesn't look human" - I mean, a cathedral is partially designed to look like a piece of Heaven. Still. The currently largest building, the Burj Khalifa, is about 830m high.
Keep it going. Always interesting, respectful and educated. And as interested and curious as you are. There is no other way to learn better about our world and all the countries and cultures! Just on the video you watch: It's always strange to me when others talking positive about going by train in germany. I don't like it, because they are always late and it's not always so smooth as in that video. As this guy was lucky to go with out "high velocity trains" on one of the better tracks of the country. But if you really want to know how great it can be to go by train, go visit japan, seriously! 🙂 That said am still happy that he liked traveling by train here. "Spezi" was invented for the german market. "Spezi" is a brand by itself, so other companies call it like "Mezzo Mix"(Coca Cola) or "SchwipSchwap" (Pepsi). And all others that sell a similar product just "Cola Mix" It's like mixing Cola and Fanta/Orange Limonade, but still not quite that. You really have to taste it, to know what I mean. And if that cn is too small, go to a supermarket where you get bottles from 0,5 liter up to 2 liter. 😁 And regardin that "it looks like fake": Considert hat germany is a countr with a history that goes back to the Romans. The Dome was build during medieval times. And the area arround it has changed, of course. And that'y why some places in germany look like "unreal". But to be honest I guess I had a similar feeling while I visited Japan (I know I mentioned that country before) as they have even a better way how to mix past and present to gether. In the architecture, but generaly spoken in their culture. They preserv traditions but are very much open for the present and the future. Germany can be that you can't have both, somehow.
Algorithm brought me here. Nice to see someone so fascinated by germany. Hope you reach your goal and get to visit. I live like 30 minutes from cologne with the train and its def. a nice city to visit. Obivously I'm a bit biased, though. :D - btw. Döner got extremely expensive haha It was once at 3,50€ now you pay like 6€
Take a glass and add equal quantities of Fanta & Cola... voilà! Spezi/Mezzomix. And Döner ingredients but wrapped up pretty much like a big burrito is a yufka. Better & easier to eat than in the Fladenbrot.
Spezi IS ... Fanta + Coca Cola ... and if you mix it yourself ... a) you can "choose your preference" while b) still being surprised, because you wont get that mix 100% the same every time.

I know that the city of Cologne was bombed flat during WWII,, but (correct me if I'm wrong), the cathedral was spared, as many other in German cities......
The Cathedral had some damage, but not too serious . It is said it may have been spared, because the pilots used it as a landmark for orientation. The Cathedral itself was not relevant, but the trainstation and bridges next to it. 70% of Cologne had been destroyed and they still find about 20 unexploded bombs per year during construction works in Cologne.
1400 meters is almost a mile! Not across, but up, meaning you must pull your own weight up one mile. Some people will have problems with joints and - endurance…

@@judywe4941 I thought he said 1400 meters. must have meant feet then. Yes, that makes more sense, come to think of it… so that would be 515 feet. a stair is not one foot high, though, so that is 533 steps up. What is quite a bit, nevertheless, going UP… possibly around 18-20 floors…
i really like Döner but i dont eat it often because iam to lazy to drive to the good Döner Restaurant, but also i can remember when it was like 3,50€ and now like 6€ is pretty sad .
Im a bit confused as i thought Germany did a döner like Denmark. This looks like a pita bread and not a roll where you cant see whats inside. Here its a dürum so maybe thays just another Turkish way to do it. But in England where they clal it doner, i guess they didnt get the Ö right? They had the roll version too. But they called it doner and not dürum.? In fact they pronounced it like Madonna, so you got a lot of jokes about a Madonna kebab.. Mt fave is a dürum with lamb but thats so hard to find these days. But in the late 70's and early 80's that's what you got in London. Lamb beats everything.. And the garlic sauce.. Yummy 😊
The roll version is dürüm, the pita bread version is also called kebab. In Germany when people say Döner, we usually mean the pita bread version. If we mean the roll version we say dürüm
Thats a little crazy for me to see as a german native. Celebraiting eat a Döner (one kind of German Fastfood) and drink a tin (can) of MezzoMix (50/50 Coke and Fanta). But...... okay. :-)
@@DSP16569 You won't get a kebab with pork - it doesn't exist 😉. Because the kebab was invented by a Turk - and he was/is a Muslim. And Muslims don't eat pork. I know kebabs with lamb and mutton, beef and turkey. Turkey meat is/was also used for cost reasons. The profit is higher there.
Doner kebab was “invented” by Turkish guest workers in Berlin. And as we all know, they are Muslims, so they don't eat pork. Lamb, mutton and beef/veal are preferred there.

"Who has the time to build something like that" ask all the generations involved in building it over about 600 years until it was finally declared finished. Started in 1248 and finished in 1880 and we started making jokes if the city is going to take as long for restauration as for building it, afterall it´s Germany 😅
Running and climbing stairs are two different things 😉
🤣

there are 533 steps to the top.
that's about 38 to 40 floors that you have to walk up

Ja, ja. Der Kölner Dom !
Become aware:
The American Civil War ended in 1865
1809 Abraham Lincoln was born
James Cook discovered Australia in 1770
America was discovered in 1492
1431 Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, is executed
The Chinese Ming dynasty begins its reign 1368
Construction of Cologne Cathedral begins 1248 !
I love his first two impressions of Cologne:
Wow, that's a really big church! (it's 157 meters tall and 144 meters long. I guess you can climb up to a height of 140 meters, excitement added another zero 😅)
But look at this Döner! That's absolutely genious! Best thing ever! ! This is why you have to visit Germany!!!
😂
hey, lots of love from Hamburg in Germany. thx for the curiosity and fun you had with our odd things we have. 😂❤
Mezzo Mix tastes like Coke and orange soda because that’s exactly what it is. Mix it yourself: 50/50…
But with Mexican Coke and Orange Fanta.
@@DSP16569Orange Fanta is different here than in US.
Real orange vs. fake one...
Exactly. It's just Coca Cola and Fanta. 🤷♀️😄
It's like crack, heroin, and cocaine rolled into one for the addiction level, but fortunately it doesn't hurt your health (as much) unless you over eat.😂
Edit 2: cathedrals like the Kölner Dom were conceptualized during the times of extreme Christian dominance in Europe.
I think its a whole different thing to walk up stairs for that long than just walk straight forward on an even path.
Also it's a different thing to walk up stairs or a ramp. And it also depends on the steps of the stairs. Stairs like the ones in the dome of cologne aren't friendly to human knees, since they are pretty worn out over all that time they are harder to walk on than more modern stairs are.
Mezzo Mix is from Coca Cola Company and it is Fanta and Coke together
I walked up the tower to the Dom in Cologne once (533 stairs up and down) and my legs were shaking after I came down again 😂😂😂
13:50 Sorry to disappoint you, but it does look like stuff you can see on a day-to-day basis. Cologne might be a bit/A LOT bigger than the rest, but such places are all across Germany.
14:40 Cologne is built on top of a roman city / is the continuation of a roman city. Old roman ruins are found underneath houses and are preserved for archaeological / historical purposes.
u like Köln - u need to see Dresden
I met James at the Dom
My hometown... Cologne 😊
161 meter while the Kölner Dom is "just" at 157 meter.
döner + mezzo best combo ❤
btw. not too long ago döner was around 3 bucks
Still 4 bucks at most places here in Eastfrisia
The construction of Cologne Cathedral began in the year 1248. The building was officially finished in 1880...
But the cathedral will probably never be fully finished; a lot of things now need to be restored
My Hometown, the best of the world😊😊😊

James Bray was in alot of german Streamers streams. bro didnt even know whats going on but they all had alot of fun :)))
I can only say it again and again, feel free to hit me up if you ever come to Germany and I'll show you around Nuremberg
Edit: he said mezzo mix/ spezi tastes like cola and orange soda...this is exactly what it is.
Ulm or Speyer and many others are great too)
A few years ago Student Döner was about 2,50
@@fifapro3216 yes and it was about 3,- € for non students and there even was a time it was about 3,- DM ... How many years back you want to go? About 4,- to 4,50 was the regular price for probably the past 10 years, at least in all cities I lived in.
I can't wait to eat a döner again I live in the UK and wasn't home in Germany in 5 years I miss the food so much
Mix fanta and coca cola 1:1, then you have mezzo. This is still how it is done in restaurants here. When the owners are old, you don't order "mezzo" but "cold coffee" to get it, but that is slowly dying out
I never heard it being called kalter Kaffee before until 2 minutes ago when I read it in another comment. Spezi is the way to go
I really love hearing you say that you will take at least one month of time to discover some German places!
Thank you
Definitely no offense to the Finn’s indeed but for Europe it was also the UK because I have family there a lot
Then Germany I always had an attraction to them because of cars and I’ve always heard Germans are tall and German stuff are really good but after seeing Germany on video it’s easily a country in Europe I’d live in if I had the chance.
(Or when you're drunk and want something at like 2 am on your way home.)
But I also know of a german sports star for the decathlon, I think, that lives in Austin (?) Texas in the US.
I just warched a video by him.He has lived some years there and seems to love it.
Its not 1400 meters lol. The Dome is 157 meters tall. It might have 1400 steps.
11:11 most cans in döner kebap shops are selled in SIze filled up with 330ml . i think this amount for a meal is perfekt and not to much.
Well Mezzo Mix is actually Coca Cola and Fanta mixed together. So ofcourse it tastes like that. Its the same Company making it! ^^
That said am still happy that he liked traveling by train here.
And regardin that "it looks like fake": Considert hat germany is a countr with a history that goes back to the Romans.
:D - btw. Döner got extremely expensive haha It was once at 3,50€ now you pay like 6€
Woah that’s a lot more 😭
Maybe the people, who turned around, are afraid of hights!? ✌️
now i want a döner
his smilie makes me so happy that he likes the döner😅
Take a glass and add equal quantities of Fanta & Cola... voilà! Spezi/Mezzomix. And Döner ingredients but wrapped up pretty much like a big burrito is a yufka. Better & easier to eat than in the Fladenbrot.
I can tell you that one month will be mot enough for explore the beauty of my country.
Der Speyerer Dom ist schöner als der in Köln.
Grüße aus Deutschland. 😀
Mezzo Mix is from Coca Cola it’s literally Fanta and cola mixed
Yes and there's another MM with Coke and lemon soda, probably Sprite.
But I'm not sure if it's still available, haven't seen it for a while...

for ur understanding the dom is 8,6991967 Miles high and it is just stairs so that is way harder then just 8 miles walking :D
Around Cologne is a saying, home is, where the Dom is.
YO GUYS its not 14 hundred meters its 157meters only. ULM Münster is the tallest church tower in the world 161,53meters
The Mezzomix can has a content of 0.33 liters.
Spezi IS ... Fanta + Coca Cola ... and if you mix it yourself ...
a) you can "choose your preference" while
b) still being surprised, because you wont get that mix 100% the same every time.

the 1400 metres thing is wild. its not 1400 metres at all. it might be 1400 stairs tho, but i doubt that too. would be interesting to knwo where he got that number from or what he is mixing it up with.
The tower of the Cologne Cathedral is by far not 1400 meters high, but only 157,22 m. It has been the second highest building in the world for some time (the highest was the Münster in Ulm, another Cathedral in Germany, about 4 m higher). But today there are higher skyscrapers, the highest is Burj Khalifa with 828 m.
I am able to understand, because as a German I'd be on fire to taste some real TexMex food!!!!!!!

Or for people who like chicken more than pig.
The dome of Cologne was build between 1248! to 1880 and is over 600 years old, that is why it looks so out of place. It was bombed and heavily damaged by the allied bombing campaign during WWII but we rebuild it.
Döner is an invention of Turkish immigrants. It tastes really good!

Ofcourse it is not 1400 meters high😂, the highest building this day is like 825 meters. Still, 150 meters is high to climb stairs. I climbed Eifel tower till the second floor and Dom Cathedral in Utrecht (about 100 meters). I rather walk 5 miles straight then climb stairs 100 meters in height😅, but both are attainable for people with medium to low fitness level

Well, if you think the Kölner Dom doesn't look real, then you should really visit the Vienna national library or the natural history museum in Vienna. The Architecture of those places is really unreal. (Every time i visit the Biblio i feel like i have taken a trip to hogwarts)
Cool. Are they free to visit or is there a fee to pay?
