- A quick shooting video with the Marlin 336 to 240 yards. This time in .30-30 and without a scope. The results are kind of predictable but it was still fun anyway.
If you like this channel, you may want to check out a new channel called the Imperfect Outdoorsman. I am in no way affiliated with that channel but it's new and I thought I'd give them a shout-out. I expect good things from them in the future. Link below:

Beautiful range. The green range with brown earth contrasting with the golden sunny hillside makes for an excellent backdrop for the video. Topped by some fantastic shooting. Very zen.
Thank you!
Two for six ain't bad for metal sights at 240! I will check out the Imperfect Outdoorsman.
Glad to see that the projectiles
didn't fizzle out at 100 yards
and plow into the ground
( contrary to modern popular
opinion)
Most that criticize the 30/30
have never used one extensively
good shooting with the peep. you have a couple really nice marlins.
If you never have, read about the
old creedmoor match(es) where shots were at 200- 500 yards. No scopes, and and black powder, some muzzleloaders ( maybe all were ?)
Love shooting my Marlins. Wish I had the ammo and time to do it a couple times a month. I’ve got a 1973 336 .35rem and 1996 30as .30-30win. All I need now is a 336 .30-30, 1894 .44mag, 39a .22lr, 1895 .45-70gov SBL, 1894 cb, 1895 cb, and…
Besides the two 336 carbines, I’ve got a 39a. My dad has the 1895 Guide Gun as well. Wish I’d never sold my 444p Outfitter. That was a really dumb move on my part.
I too am on the lookout for an 1894 in .44 mag and/or .357 mag. I’ve got a ton of brass and bullets for both. Love my Ruger revolvers but I’d love to have a carbine or two to go with them.
I guess the moral of the story is that you can never have too many Marlin lever guns!
I have a 45 year old 336 and love it. I installed a Williams WGRS peep with a FireSight in front. Great for hog hunting.
i think your doing pretty good with what you got right there especially with blunt nose ammo
Nice shooting!
Thank you!
But I think I can do better. I’m going to try to tighten it up a bit next time.
Good shooting .
Thank you!
Thanks for the channel recommendation.
If you've not found it yet, look for Sagebrush Longshots. They showcase some old classics, levers, single shots, black powder, and on a long range basis.
I am familiar with Sagebrush Longshots. Lots of great shooting there. Another good one is an Australian couple’s channel called Mark and Sam After Work. Some pretty impressive offhand long-range shooting there as well.
@@SuburbanRifleman Yes, been on/off their channel, probably the best long-range demos on the web.
My longest range one shot kill (way back in the '70s) was with a Texan 336 30-30. 275 yards. How did I know it was 275 yards? Oh... I helped my brother-in-law build the barbed wire fence!!! Buck was at the far end of the fence and I was at the gate (got there late in the morning... he was under my stand on the far side!!!)
@@deafsmith1006 nice!
My Marlin 336s had bad iron sights, ordered williams fp peep dont like to put scope on so it should be good , from australia
What size gongs are those? I am confident a smaller aperture will tighten groups , especially at longer ranges. Love the 336 platform. Anyway good shooting and another enjoyable video. Thanks bro.
Thanks, as always!
I’ve never measured the gongs. I’ll do that next time. I think the silhouettes at 120 and 153 are maybe 10-12” high. The one at 240 might be 16”? Those are total guesses on my part though. I think I used my smaller aperture on my 39a. Williams sells them loose for about $7. I’m going to buy a selection of them.
Hey Suburban Rifleman! Loved the video, where can I get a sling like that for my Marlin?
Thank you!
This is a muzzleloader sling, made by Uncle Mike’s. I don’t believe they make it anymore. However, Track of the Wolf sells this one: www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/55/1/SLING-LACE-S
It looks very similar to mine. Thompson Center used to make a lace-on sling as well, but it had a giant obnoxious “TC” logo on the side of it.
@@SuburbanRifleman Thank you!
Do you find that federal fusion is usually fairly actuate for you? I’ve had a few accuracy issues with it in years past. usually i stick with Federal but had to drop the fusion for 30-30 because of very large groups. That was years ago, too, so maybe I should try to find it again.
For me, it’s been pretty average. I’ve had my best luck with old Winchester Silvertips. I seem to recall some Remington I wasn’t too thrilled with but I cant remember exactly which bullet it was. I have so much brass and bullets now that I pretty much just reload for the .30-30.
I got a newer 336 and the front sight was sitting way off to the left of where it should and I've been having trouble getting the irons sighted in so I'm thinking I might trade it in on a Mossberg 500 retrograde 🤷🏻♂️ either that or put a scope on it.. my Marlin 1894 ABL 45-70 feels like it's higher quality too.. and since I already have a nice lever gun that's making me want to trade my 30-30 in that much more lol
The older Marlins definitely feel higher quality. I don’t have any experience with the Remington produced rifles but I’m looking forward to see what Ruger has to offer.
I have a Marlin 336 it was my uncles. It’s a 35 caliber, can I use the 30-30 ammo on that.
Unfortunately no. You will have to find .35 Remington ammo. It’s rather hard to come by at the moment but should be reappearing on the market at some time.
If you're inexperienced, please
get some instruction for safety
Great shooting in my opinion. I’m not sure what you’re trying to achieve when considering changing the open sights or mounting a scope. What is the rifle zeroed in at and then are you trying to consistently jump from 100 yards to 150 yards to 240 yards? Obviously there is a several inch drop at 240 yards if the rifle is zeroed at 100 yards. It looked as though you were just approximating with a holdover at those long distances and you still were hitting the target… That’s very good in my opinion!
Thank you. I was just using a holdover at 240.
Pretty hard finding 30/30 around here.
It’s very frustrating.
The rifle was designed for around 150 yards for humane hunting kills. Why, 240 yards? Use a bigger caliber if you want to go out that far. The proper tool for the job and all.
Just for fun. I like ringing steel.
Such a weapon was used to commit an murder?
Amityville
@@marsyl85 after a quick search, it would appear so, although chambered in .35 Remington.
People have also used their bare hands to commit murder . Don't see anyone trying to van the possession of hands. 😂
