  • I have been looking for a cheap beater bolt action .308 that I can use and abuse. There are quite a few options on the market today including the Savage Axis, Ruger American, Mossberg Patriot, Remington 770, Winchester XPR, T/C Venture, Mossberg 100 ATR, Marlin X7 Etc....
    They start around $300 and can be found in scoped combo packages of varying quality for a few dollars more.
    I had been interested in picking up a Ruger Model 77 Hawkeye but have never seen one lower than $600 in .308. I decided to wait until I found a good deal.
    Then I came across this Savage 11/111 Trophy Hunter XP in .308 which means it's actually a model 11. The Trophy Hunter is a combo package that comes bundled with a Nikon Scope. It is a cheap Nikon and doesn't even have a model associated with it but it is pretty clear and has .308 bullet drops built into the reticle. The biggest part they cheaped out on is the scope rings which are admittedly cheap looking but I took them off and locktited everything and snugged them up and so far have had not issues. I haven't shot it enough to know whether they will hold up with tons of use.
    In keeping with the cheap theme I threw on a $3 pink clearance sling I found at Tractor Supply and am Shooting $12 Perfecta .308 from walmart. Though I have also shot the $9 Tula steel case with no issues in this rifle.

    I have this same rifle that I won through a local sportsman club for a 10 dollar ticket. I have shot 3deer with it so far and the furthest any went was about 50 yards and he was on a dead run. I love this gun.

    Got mine for 350 barely used. She shoots. Worked up an accurate load I'd feel comfortable taking moose with up here in Alaska. Now working on a slightly lighter load. No frills but so far very accurate.

    I own same package, (minus the pink sling) ; ) Came with scope mounted. Had inconsistent groups at 100 yds. Noticed that the 2 pc scope rails were both loose. Bought a 1 pc rail, started from scratch with Blue thread lok on all screws. Lapped scope rings with a wheeler kit and tourqed everything to specs. Lightened up accu trigger to 3 lbs ish and added a beartooth comb riser to stock. I paid $500 for mine thru Buds and now have $600 into it. You did awesome at $300. I'm considering shortening the stock, but after 500 + rounds thru it, I have myself an awesome shooter of a deer rifle after retiring an old Remington 742 30-06 that jammed on me after shooting a nice buck last year. Hunted with that hand me down from pa for years ! Ready for a new chapter of bagging whitetails with the savage ! You did awesome at $300, great gun !

    Nice find! I've been looking for a scoped bolt gun in .308 to complement our Winchester 94. I handload for 30-30 so I plan to use the same bullets and powder for "reduced recoil" .308 loads

      I have made some reduced power .30-30 and .30-06 using unique that were like shooting .22. Lot's of fun.

    The Axis II has the adjustable AccuTrigger and a fairly good scope for hunting, although the rings only have one screw or bolt per side. The scope is bore sighted at the factory, some need little adjustment at 25 yards and others need a lot of adjustment. Note: for a given caliber, look up trajectories for your bullet type. I set mine for 200 yards.

    I love Trophy Hunter! I agree the scope and rings and bases are really cheap. I’d highly recommend to replace them with a good dependable scope and some good steel rings and bases. Gun is super accurate and really smooth! Only downside is the clip but for the money it’s an awesome gun!!

      It's not a bad looking rifle and for the price, it can still outshoot most people. The only real knock I can give it is that the scope mounts and rings could use an upgrade. And I am certain with an upgrade in scopes, can max out the range one would want from a 308

    I have the same gun in 30-06, i like it but this week im getting a one piece steel mount new steel rings and new scope. It come with a weaver scope & alluminum rings & mounts. I have had issues with it not holding zero after a few shots, so i think the scope isnt bad but im going to get a new one for a change and give the weaver to my Son, the old bases and rings are going to the scrap pile. Bought mine here for 780$ out the door with a case bipod and 4 boxes of ammo & a sling from Cabellas. I think you got a smokin deal buddy cause it really is great hunting gun, and you wont get upset at all the scratches that it will get.
    Its got to have new bas
    es and rings though if you actually hunt with it...

    I got the exact one a week ago and love how accurate it is. Is your bolt a little wobbly when it's all the way back? Mine does that and I'm thinking about getting Savage to send me another bolt ..if that's not normal.

    • @GunAndShotTV
      @GunAndShotTV  7 років тому +5

      Mine wobbles a bit as well. Some wobble is going to be normal to allow for easier cycling/bolt removal. The bolt is really only going to be locked up when a round is chambered and the locking lugs are engaging the receiver.

    • @Samyouell11510
      @Samyouell11510 4 роки тому +2

      In this price range it’s going to be normal. Usually the more expensive rifle you buy, the tighter tolerances you get.

    • @peterinsley7001
      @peterinsley7001 2 роки тому

      Ya mine isnt the tightest either, as long as it locks up tight a little wobble fully back doesnt matter at all, actually preferable in the dead winter, here in north Ontario Canada if its tight it WILL seize up solid with frost in bout 2 minutes, no one wants that..

    You are right, you haven’t shot much but I like watching you anyway.
    If you want to hit the target better, get someone to show your how to shoot like a pro.
    Your breathing, pulling the trigger easy without letting the gun jerk & missing your target.
    Training plus a lot of distance targets training will help!
    A 308 will shoot further than you shot -accurately. I don’t like bolt action but some people do.
    I had a 270 savage & it kicked more than others for some reason.
    I shot a 30-06 that was built by a SWAT TEAM LEADER/Trainer.
    The first time I shot it, I hit the center of the target twice arm 100 yards.
    Make some more videos for you are Amusing to listen to & watch.
    Have a great day!!

    That scope is not a cheap scope in my opinion I have the exact same one on my savage axis accu trigger 22/250 and I'm shooting 500+ yards no problem it's just how you operate it in my opinion these savages are fucking awesome guns and take the abuse and my 22/250 will out shoot my dads 308 custom build long range gun

    • @GunAndShotTV
      @GunAndShotTV  7 років тому +3

      No issues with the scope thus far. And I'm pretty sure it's decent or Nikon wouldn't have lifetime warrantied it. Just seems like one of those to good to be true things. But at $300 with 3 boxes of ammo I think I got a screaming deal even if the scope was a $30 tasco. I'm impressed that this whole package only sold for $600 new.

      Guy, the .308 is less recoil, a short action, a little flatter but the same .30 caliber bullet, oh and a little faster than the 30-06, I own both calibers now, I ended up with a Marlin X7 short action in .308 and love it, I had to tighten some screws on it but love it

      Thats a fine little rifle. Perfect deer rifle. Some folks hunt with their rifles. Come on 3 boxes of ammo a new deer rifle and a good one too. With a little 3x9 nikon. I'd swap the rings and spray paint it and hunt hard for years with it. I sometimes still use a old savage 7mm mag thats over 25 yrs old still shoots 3/4" with hunting loads at 150 yrds.

    i thought that the model 110 was only called 110 because it cost 110 dollars in the late 50s when it came out new. was supposedly gonna be like 95 bucks but it why up in price to 109.99 and this was named model 110. i may be totally wrong. my source is from a gun review website, forgot which one.

    • @GunAndShotTV
      @GunAndShotTV  7 років тому

      I know the model 11 is the short action and the model 111 is the long action. Not sure if price is how it started.

    • @U2Jaime1317
      @U2Jaime1317 7 років тому

      Gun&ShotTV 3 links to websites all say the same thing. I guess the the model 110 was named after the price. Who knows, maybe the rest of the models inherited the naming of their models because of this rifle.

    • @GunAndShotTV
      @GunAndShotTV  7 років тому

      Looks like they changed it in 1998.
      Here is the info about the numbering scheme from Wikipedia.
      In 1998, Savage re-engineered the short action Model 110 and adopted a
      new model numbering scheme to differentiate short action models from the
      long actions. Thus, the short action Model 110 became the Model 10,
      while the long action model remained the Model 110. The Model 110 is the
      basis for the entire line Savage centerfire bolt-action rifles, including the Models 11/111, 12, 14/114, 16/116, and Model 210 bolt-action shotgun as well as the Stevens Model 200. The series is available in a wide array of chamberings, from .204 Ruger to .338 Winchester Magnum, in order to suit the needs of almost any shooter.

    Honestly... An SKS is way more impressive for $350ish. (Nowadays) That's a nice gun though. I garuntee it'll put meat in a fridge. 👍 A .308 is NO joke and it will put any mammal down on earth with a well placed Shot!

    • @justanobserver7153
      @justanobserver7153 6 років тому +1

      It does come with a Nikon 3x9x40 BDC Riflescope. If I had to do over, I would buy the rifle without scope and add or go with the Nikon P-308 4x12 x40 Scope. But as a package, the 3x9 is nice. Savage must not use thread lok on the scope rails or rings, so I would start from scratch with the mounting process and apply tread lok to screws and torque all screws to spec . Or have someone who knows help.

      I think I'll hang onto it. But you can find some good deals on these packages used if you look. they were so cheap to begin with that many people bought them and started hunting and upgraded and sold them off. For my needs I don't think an upgrade would get shot enough to justify having it.

      I ended up finding a bit nicer sling on clearance for $5 that's on it now. The pink ones were $3 so I bought a bunch of them, in the end a cheap sling is a cheap sling so I could care what color it is.

    • @GunAndShotTV
      @GunAndShotTV  7 років тому

      I just buy any sling I can find if it's on clearance for less than $5. Tractor supply clears them out often. If I'm actually taking one in the field I try to swap a decent sling on it beforehand but most of my guns just are used for plinking anyways.

    Would you go hunting with this gun?

    • @GunAndShotTV
      @GunAndShotTV  7 років тому +1

      Most definitely. That's what it's designed for. Obviously I would zero the scope at 100 yards first and make sure the BDC reticle marks were on at longer ranges for the ammo I was using. It's a nice light rifle and would be an easy gun to lug around out in the field.

    Clearly you live in one of the People's Republics that have been proliferating since the Bubba Clinton years and only became more numerous during the 2008-2016 reign of The Anointed One thus the paper work required for a private transfer. On top of all that, seeing how far Savage has sunk since the day of the Model 99, of which I own two I'll avoid the XP in any caliber and if I ever feel the "need" go with a Ruger "American" which at least here in the People's Republic of Maryland sell for the same kind of money.

    • @GunAndShotTV
      @GunAndShotTV  7 років тому +1

      Illinois has been a turd in the punchbowl and required a FOID/bill of sale since well before Clinton, starting in 1968.
      It's a $300 dollar gun that works just as well as a Ruger American. I keep looking for a nice 99 Lever action but have only see decent prices on ones in moon calibers.

      They are definitely made to hit a price point. The baseplate and catch are plastic. But it still runs 100% and it's a $300 gun so I'm not going to complain that loudly about it.

      I got a Remington 700 mountain rifle. Left the 4 shot magazine loaded in ammunition safe for a year. It was trash when I went to use it the next year. I have 1 savage and several Remington bolt actions... after them knowingly putting faulty safety in them and if you don’t know about it look up CNBC Remington documentary... I’ll never buy another Remington..

    • @michaelc4060
      @michaelc4060 3 роки тому

      Savage 110 is more $ than a RA. Yes, the Ruger mags are better. Action?? Cant say. As for Remington I would like an older 700 BDL in 30-06. Beautiful gun.
      New Remington? I'll pass. Ruger M77 is a great rifle but more money.
