    Bill, that was one of the best explanations of disc size and modulation I have ever heard. Wonderful job. Racing BMX, road, Cross, and Mountain since the 80s, I now really get the point you are making as Mountain definitely does require modulation ability but also the ability to really stop or slow you down on steep downhills.....not the case with BMX, where it is almost all modulation/maintaining speed. Thanks again for this video.

    Coming from the MTB world, I love hydraulic disc. And if you taco your rim, you don’t have to worry about the rim rubbing.

      Totally make sense in MTB bigger wheels, Knobby tires, bombing down hills, wet stuff, mud, gunk, rim brakes SUCKED on MTB's... BUT with BMX, the smaller wheel, the controlled environment, the V- brakes offered great modulation and great braking... BUT DISC have arrived, so lets do ti RIGHT!!!

    Good video and true. 120 is plenty, a 140 is almost too much and a 160 which I had and what your OS20 comes with is entirely excessive. Instant lock up and great for high siding just like you've mentioned in a podcast. Good for getting bent too in crashes. Admittedly perplexed by the decision to use a post mount and 160 on that OS20 frame. I had a custom Ti frame made with the same set up and will never spec a post or 160 again. I like hydraulic for sure, but a good cable disc is plenty for bmx. Good video!

    • @SupercrossBMX.
      @SupercrossBMX.  Рік тому +2

      120 is more than enough. The OS20 frame was designed 4 years ago and was based off of the Shine D/J rear set up for disc… and for the BIGGER guys on it, the BIGGER wheels, and running a cable activated , it works super good!

      @@SupercrossBMX. ah, that makes sense being a 160mm and cable. Hydraulic is way too much with a 160 rotor. Buddy went cable on this same setup and loves it. Definitely prefer flat mount versus post. Excellent

    A follow up video suggestion: adapting your v-brake bike to disc brakes. Not all bikes are designed specifically for discs, which leaves out most racers.

    • @SupercrossBMX.
      @SupercrossBMX.  Рік тому +2

      Appreciate the suggestion! And no, not all bikes are designed for Disc, and there are a ton of Adapters out there, our Sister company @Speedlineparts makes one, but with all Disk Brake Adapters, you have to be very careful with how you use and maintain them.

  • @bryantsutton2915

    Thank you, Bill, you nailed it with the portion of proper brake set up being the key to using disc brakes on a BMX. I run disc because I want all my bikes to feel the same (BMX, MTB, and Road). Also, bending a rim crashing in one moto doesn't mean you're out of the next moto been saved by this a few times. Disc has always been easier (for me) to set up too. Trying to get toe in on the pads right and everything in the right plane with rim brakes has always been a hassle. Maybe a video on proper disc brake set up for next Tech Tuesday? Considering Supercross mostly sells frames and parts I think your clientele leans towards the mechanically competent (or at least mechanically curious). 48K people watched KJ shove dirt around his yard, watching you set up disc brakes while drinking Rancho Luna might break the internet.

    I totally agree about single pistons and small rotors being enough, but v-brakes are garbage at stopping. Racing is about feathering yes, but what about practice when someone’s kids eats shit and we need to stop *now*. We should be able to do all our braking with 1 finger and enough brake stroke to not contact the ring finger. Riders can easily learn to uses discs during their manual practice

    Need an honest opinion, I am 43 and will be purchasing my 1st race bike to get started. Both my kids discovered BMX on youtube so this is where we are headed now 😄. So I am between the mongoose title elite and the redline proline for the bike. The goose has V brakes and redline is disc. Priced fairly equal. But you addressed my exact concern about disc on BMX, I am thinking safer bet is V brakes on the goose to get acclimated to racing. But am I going to regret not going with factory disc right off the bat?

    Rotor size depends on riding style and I agree if you're racing bmx then smaller is better. I personally use the 160mm rotor since I converted my bmx to a e-bmx and when you got a 72v 3000w electric motor pushing speeds close to 60mph the 100mm rotor not going to work
