Nice to see someone make a very gallant attempt at such a job (and to succeed without the proper tooling). I am an engineer myself, and it's really good to see someone who does not profess such skills, but is willing to have a really good go at tackling such a job and to finally succeed. The nice part is that you & your missis did it together and really shared some quality time "ACE". Also, it's so nice to see a "young un" like you taking an interest in practical skills, and with a healthy sense of humour, keep it up lad.Good on yer Kid, from an old godger in Wales UK.
I loved this video, and we intend to install a compost toilet in our RV when we get one, as well. It's great to know you're doing an update video, and that you love the toilet. You're my favourite RV videos on UA-cam thus far - very fun and entertaining!
You two are THE BEST! Love the video and can certainly appreciate and relate to the frustrations. With that I have to say I was smiling and even compassionately chuckling along the way. Your valiant effort to cut the hole in the plywood without a jigsaw or spare Dremel bits had me rolling and saying -- "that'd me". And Nikki, the comments are tremendous. Thanks guys for all of the great videos and for showing us how much fun full-timing can be -- even when installing a composting toilet. :-)
Ha that video is highly entertaining. I lost count of the number of times I said to myself yeah that's not going to work.... wait, no you can't connect to that, etc. BUT extremely proud of you for posting this for the public to see- and using your real name! On behalf of the viewing public, we appreciate sharing the experience with us! :-)
Absolutely love your videos! This video was great because it shows an installation by someone who is like most of us, just able enough to attempt (and finally complete) something of this nature. You were brave to attempt it, and get kudos for completing it all by yourself! I would've been lazy and hired a pro. Anxious to see how you like it!
Rich we are considering adding a small pipe that will allow grey water to overflow into the black. Seems like an easy thing to do, and will greatly increase our Wild Camping. I'm thinking we'll need to install a shutoff valve so that the future owner can "turn off" this option.
I really hope my comments didn't come across as overly critical. I love that you had the ambition to DIY and it certainly was entertaining. If I had been close by I would have been very happy to lend a hand. Again please forgive me if my comments seemed mean in any way. You two are my favorite RV people on UA-cam.
I did a several fill and dumps using the spray nozzle built into our black tank. I also left some water in there and some of the heavy duty tank cleaner and deodorizer which I've dumped and replaced a few times now. My plan is to always keep a little water in there so it doesn't warp or begin cracking, etc. after long periods of "unuse'.
Not at all David, I wish there would have been someone to lend a hand...or at least a tool! Ha. imagine how much time I could have saved if I would have been able to remove the white plastic cover in the wet bay! Oh well. Thanks for taking the time to comment, it really means a lot to us. Hope we run across you again out on the road.
entertainment value 150%. Most people would hire someone, and not grow as a person. I'm sure you learned more than you wished with the experience, which puts you ahead of the curve. Love what your doing, only wish I could answer your crew call.
+Gone with the Wynns LMAO...I love you guys. It is the both of you that have inspired me to take a year off to just explore the whole of the US and Canada might even go to Alaska. I am 35 years old and single. So I'll most likely fly solo with my dog. Been saving up to get the RV and learning as much as I can from all your vids. You guys are by far the best at making these RV lifestyle vids. What I like is that you guys do it, but still maintain style. Only thing I'm worried about is buying the right RV and not get ripped off when I do.
In my mind, there is nothing more fun and instructional than reasoning your way through an install like this... good job!! Did you do any special cleanout on the black tank before you sealed it off?
Great video ... appreciate all the effort to get those hard shots! You know the secret to life is "Patience" ... "use the right tools" .... and if you are working for someone else or the situation requires it ... you can have a "Sense of Urgency".
I came upon your videos while shopping around for a loo. A compost model makes more sense than a fire in the hole! Enjoyed the prep/ dump series with installation. Fun. Intriguing. A project is never easy-guess that's why they're so satisfying when done!
I've told MANY rv people to do the compost toilet. It will save sooo much water. You can connect the grey water and black water tanks for longer boon docking. You can dump the grey water for free in a bush or field. NOW you have lot's of dish water and shower water or hand washing. No more paying 10 bucks to get to a dump station so this will save a ton of money over the year.
I love your optimism, and your honesty. As for the armchair know-it-all's, I'm a professional and I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've finished a task only to have one of the guys walk up and say "Well, if you'd have done it like this..." My solution to this is to simply give those guys that task the next time it comes up. I tend to fire them a few times first, just because, but they have clearly earned the right to perform those tasks for all future events. I'm thinking that when you put the one in the other side of your cat, one of the "armchair know-it-all's" can assist you with that because it's guaranteed to be a pleasant task.
TP is OK! Nature's Head recommends using a rapid dissolve type toilet paper like an RV or Marine grade which is available at most camping/marine stores...and even Wal-Mart. We do have a video on RV Friendly TP if you're interested: GoneWithTheWynnsDOTcom/rv-toilet-paper
These things take time, our videos are not simple to put together, plus we have other obligations we must complete. We will film an update video before the end of the year.
love your videos ....i always thought these toilets would really be disgusting but i have really changed my mind after watching your videos....i have recently moved to British Columbia Canada ,from Ontario and find dry camping is mostly the way to camp here....a few more things i`ll need to learn, and your videos are really helping ....keep them coming and thanks
Love, love, love that you two don't try to come across as perfect! Very funny and very real are so much better! We're sold on the idea! Brand new 5th Wheel that we won't use the toilet that came with it until the composting one arrives.
Good job Jason! I've bern in similar situations many a time...you just keep at it and in time its done with satisfaction. The wood idea was great! Would definitely get some safety goggles though...a few close calls myself...losing an eye would be unfortunate especially away from hospitals. Keep up the great work!
This was great, amazing what you can do with inadequate tools. And entertaining.I've wanted to know why RV mfg's not offering these as option; now in a month might find out. Thanks
According to the mfr. you can place the compost in a bag and throw it into the dumpster, it's not considered a bio hazard because you're separating the solids from the liquids.
Thanks Ronin, we are by no means experts in wiring so if you have some handy dandy info we'd be happy to share it. Also it might make me go in and re-do our wiring the correct way.
Good thing you have got lots of energy Jason. you got her done !! looks good . Thanks , I will be installing some kind of shitter in my old 67 travel trailer, maybe something similar to this unit,
posted it once and it was unlisted for some reason, so we had to go "public" and it may have sent a notification again. Sorry for the double take if you got the first one.
David, we did the install to 'go green' and reduce our footprint...and to save water while living off the cord. I did plan and purchased most of my tools in advance of the install, however I guess my planning skills aren't up to par. Oh well, made for a funny video.
I loved this! Best how to video ever!!! "Power to the Pooper" was the best! You had me laughing while learning a lot... Thanks :) P.S. Love all your videos. We just bought an RV and are planning to go grid free... I was excited to see your site and see that we weren't alone!
Hi Guys - are you considering using your black tank as an overflow gray water tank? Assuming the two tanks are close you could connect them with a tube and dramatically increase your gray tank capacity, which is nice because gray tanks are always too small!
Great help just to see the steps he went thru since we are about to do this project in a week! Wish us luck! BTW, use a battery pack/super capacitor to run the TINY fan! DIY videos for battery rigging shall be fun!!!
I loved this! I don't see an update about your toilet and how you thought it worked... and smelled! I sure would love to see that. Seriously smiled most of the time through this video. Thank you for being real and sharing your struggles!! ^_^
Baltazar.....things that make you go hmmmmm! Ha ha. We installed the toilet while we were staying at a campground so there was a toilet just a few hundred yards away. The most difficult part was finding the Coco COIR before we left said campground....otherwise we'd have been SH*T OUT OF LUCK! Ha.
Robert, We're totally happy so far with the toilet. We're planning to shot a video in the next month or so to update people on how it works. Subscribe here, or on our website GoneWithTheWynnsDOTcom
Wow great vid ! Add some commercials and you've got the making of a tv show . You can call it " R V Renos " ! Just wondering ... Instead of making big floor , why not make it big enough just to fit the new toilet. Use the flange bolts to hole it. This way you won't mess up the tiles, and it's easy in easy out! Just for thought . Oh by the way I own a renovations company!!!
Purple goddess...glad my suffering brought you joy :) Ha. We didn't know if people would sit thorough the entire video but it seems everyone gets a kick out of watching me muck it up! HAHA.
Jason, I was laughing!! Great job on putting in the new toilet :) hubby is a boat builder by trade, and builds/repair caravans. We looked at lots of different toilets and options, we have too many kids with us to put in a composting toilet, would love to because it's way better than the marine toilet that we are going to have to use :)
I've been comparing the Nature's Head with a competitor. They both offer solar vents but the design of the other one let's you remove the liquid bottle without exposing the #2 container. Has that been an issue for you with this toilet?
The thing I find funny with the competitor is he claims "you have to get a whiff of the #2 when emptying the liquids"...yet they claim the #2 chamber doesn't smell?!? For me it's a moot point and opening the chamber a couple inches to remove the liquids does not smell. I'd say save the money and go for the Nature's Head. If you check out our website there is a discount code if you decide to order: www.gonewiththewynns.com/all-composting-toilet
Gone with the Wynns Just ordered my head today. It'll be going in a 32ft live aboard sailboat. I'll be doing the pee pee dance til it arrives. Thanks for all the info & sharing!
***** That's Going to be one long pee-pee dance :) Congrats on the upgrade, the more we learn about sailing the more we think "everyone on a boat should have one of these toilets". Let me know how the install goes.
If you guys ever need help with a project like this and your in or near Colorado, let me know and I will help you. I have every possible tool you would ever need for just about anything. I will RVing full time in about a year or so myself. No charge for my services.. I just like this stuff. Shannon@sparkrepair.com
the wiring you have run to the 12v solenoid would be wrong on most RVs as the newer solenoids us 12v + - too turn on and - + to turn the system off you have power at all times so you are ok on yours the gasket in the black take is what was making it so hard to pull out it well come out but then you have a 3in open hold in the tank that you cant get to on your rv but your having fun doing it and thats all the matters
the separation is the most important part. You can read more here: www.gonewiththewynns.com/composting-toilet we do have a few followup videos we're working on now.
I do ALOT of wiring and electrical on boats (which is identical to wiring rvs.) You should never use wire nuts or caps on any vehicle. you should but connectors with a crimper not pliers. Or twist the ends together end to end not side by side. (tried to post pic but wouldn't let me) if your not going to solder then strip the ends longer then do more twists the tape the well or use adhesive heat shrink (best). Love your vids though. Are you guys still going to buy a sailboat?
What if you only use the toilet part time? Should you empty it after a few uses instead of leaving it to compost till the next time you use it? Would you need to leave the fan running if not using the toilet for a spell?
+Dale Schultz Actually, time away is even better as it allow everything to compost! It's all about the amount of uses (about 80 uses in the solids chamber) and then you would change it out. Time is your friend in this instance, not your enemy. The fan should be left running but it is just a tiny little fan that draws a very minimal amount of power. One tiny solar panel can keep it running all the time.
Thank you So much!! I'm thinking about using the A/C adapter for the fan Jason. If I decide to get a small PV panel for the fan, I suppose I could wire it directly to the fan? Details...
ha ha ha dont judge me. i love you guys, keeping it real. my husband and i make a good team when we tackle a project on this old house we live in. we call it "Marsdenizing" 😆😂 good job!
Falcon, I learned a lot on this video. the solenoid didn't work so I had to attach the wire direct to the battery which wasn't a big deal, I updated this info on our website post: gonewiththewynnsDOTcom/install-composting-toilet
I'm glad to see someone else has the same sort of problems with their projects as I do....except I would have been cussing the whole time....... I feel for ya!
He had no skills, no knowledge and no tools, and managed to do it. Do you really want to pay someone do to something a complete novice with no tools can do simply by guesswork?
This was painful to watch. I think your adorable sense of humor is what got you through. I guess all's well that didn't end with EMTs on the scene. I'm not judging, but you're the poster child for DNDIY (DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF). Thanks for making that perfectly clear. :)
I like your can do attitude. I would make a friendly suggestion to plan ahead and gather all the tools and materials you need. This would have saved you hours of work and grief. Did you do this just to control odors? There is a $60 dollar fix to handle that called xtreme vent. It completely gets rid of the odor and you do not even have to add chemicals at all. It is about a 30 minute install(if you have the right tools :) ) You can google it. Happy RVing.
5 Days to install a toilet. That was a very funny. I guess we all have talents. Yours my friend are in the arts (photography), and not in mechanics. That video was both funny and painful to watch... You might want to consider the many friends you have made over the years and seek them out when you are in their neck of the woods. I am sure most would lend a hand to help you with just about anything. FYI- everything you needed for this install is in my garage, minus the toilet. Best of luck on your next DIY.
It was a fun and painful experience for me to film it as well.....just wait till we launch the "How Not to Install an RV Faucet" video in a week or so. I shoulda learned my lesson :(
USA4US it's a great option for the eco-friendly or the RV'er or Boater who doesn't want to deal with emptying a black tank on a regular basis. you'll find the scoop on our 2 posts about it on our website in the RV section: www.gonewiththewynns.com/rvin
Jason, I have to give you an A+ for perseverance! However, have you ever looked at the "Sewer Solution"? There is a video on you-tube and Camping World sells these. You have to look for them, but they have them. It is a macerator without the gears! Works off water pressure and uses a 3/4 inch hose. No muss no fuss! Check it out. We used one for 6 years on the road and could have sold one to every RVer who was parked next to us. Once you see it work, you would throw that stinking sewer hose away. Oh, and hook up, about 30 seconds from opening up the bay to hooking up to sewer dump. After being out of full timing for 10 years, we are getting ready to purchase a Class C and take our life long trip to Alaska. Need something a little smaller than what we had before, to get off the beaten paths. Love your videos. Brings back many memories!
There's a whole section on composting toilets on the RV page of the blog. This post has a link & coupon code for a Nature's Head (what we have). www.gonewiththewynns.com/composting-toilet
So what happens with the hose that fed water into the old toilet?? Does water not come out when the water pump comes on? I just took our toilet out of our travel trailer.. we aren't hooked up to water or have any water in it yet but the wife said... "what happens if we turn on the water pump, won't water come out there"... and I had an oh crap moment... lol
I'm actually glad to see something a little less polished and bit longer from you guys.
Jason you seriously had me cracking up. Very entertaining video. It's nice to see a more real side of you.
make sure you see the video on installing the faucet too...it's worth a laugh or two :)
ditto that remark 👍🏻👍🏻
Jason, I admire your bravery and tenacity in this particular video, and always enjoy the videos put together by you and Nikki!
you are a good man Mark, I thought people would check out after the first minute...I am so untalented when it comes to handy work!
Your not stupid just determined and brave! Love your vids, thanks for all the info!
You two are THE BEST! Love the video and can certainly appreciate and relate to the frustrations. With that I have to say I was smiling and even compassionately chuckling along the way. Great DIY video. I love these "How Not To" series. Very funny and entertaining. You two make learning fun.

Well Done! Inspiring that a non-trained person can do this. And nice shot at the end (with the camera in the toilet!)
Wth, how could fixing a new Toilet be so interesting?, not once did i ever skip a bit, was with you all the way.
This is the best video. Jimmy rigging at it's best!
I guess I'm right on par then. Thanks for sharing Cecil S
Love the "more-real" episodes. The less foo foo, the better the videos are.
Thank you so much for posting this....We too intend to convert the RV potty to the Nature's Head..
2:36 Everything's more fun when kitty helps.
Your goddamn right! 👉😼😸😁
@ 13:53 I'm glad you explained what you were pouring in there.. I was getting worried!!
That was great! Thanks for the laughs. I needed it stuck in my office.
Glad you got it done!
Thanks for all the hard work making this video. It's very informative.

Robert,
We're totally happy so far with the toilet. We're planning to shot a video in the next month or so to update people on how it works. Subscribe here, or on our website GoneWithTheWynnsDOTcom
question: does the RV toilet paper drop down into the toilet as well? I never really hear of anyone mentioning about the TP used after the BM..
We put ours in a garbage bin. TP takes alot longer to break down then BM. :)
Lol, thank you for the insight. That technique sounds so Egyptian lol
Thanks, Great vid. Were you happy with how it worked?
Thank you so much for that! Nice to see that you have off moments.
It was very entertaining.

***** That's Going to be one long pee-pee dance :) Congrats on the upgrade, the more we learn about sailing the more we think "everyone on a boat should have one of these toilets". Let me know how the install goes.
Great Video! Good information and great job. A lot of uploaded videos these past couple days. Awesome!
If you guys ever need help with a project like this and your in or near Colorado, let me know and I will help you. I have every possible tool you would ever need for just about anything. I will RVing full time in about a year or so myself. No charge for my services.. I just like this stuff. Shannon@sparkrepair.com
the wiring you have run to the 12v solenoid would be wrong on most RVs
as the newer solenoids us 12v + - too turn on and - + to turn the system off
you have power at all times so you are ok on yours
the gasket in the black take is what was making it so hard to pull out it well come out but then you have a 3in open hold in the tank that you cant get to on your rv
but your having fun doing it and thats all the matters
Does this toilet separate the pee from the solids? Is that needed? I'm going to build one for my RV.
the separation is the most important part.
Bless you both for all this information. So fun. Crazy fun.
Well you learn by doing. So I would say good job.
Hi guys! Where can you get one of those drain plugs? [8:14]
Thank you!
haha, john I totally understand.
Falcon, I learned a lot on this video. the solenoid didn't work so I had to attach the wire direct to the battery which wasn't a big deal, I updated this info on our website post: gonewiththewynnsDOTcom/install-composting-toilet
5 days, job completed on time! Welcome to RV/ boat life!
I'm glad to see someone else has the same sort of problems with their projects as I do....except I would have been cussing the whole time....... I feel for ya!
I have heard that composting toilets cannot accept TP. Is that true? That seems like a shortcoming.
I'm convinced. Hire someone to do it.
+UnderdogFL yeah I could never do this installation...eek. I need to hire it done.
He had no skills, no knowledge and no tools, and managed to do it. Do you really want to pay someone do to something a complete novice with no tools can do simply by guesswork?
It looked pretty darn simple, and I know nothing about this kind of stuff. Just time consuming, if anything.
How often do you dump both the solids and liquids for the both of you?
+Carlo Dimacali We have lots of info on our site: www.gonewiththewynns.com/all-composting-toilet
Yeah I found it after posting the question, thanks. :)
I shoulda learned my lesson :(
Can you explain why you installed this type of toilet. What are the pros & cons??
USA4US it's a great option for the eco-friendly or the RV'er or Boater who doesn't want to deal with emptying a black tank on a regular basis. you'll find the scoop on our 2 posts about it on our website in the RV section:
www.gonewiththewynns.com/rvin
I like your attitude. Can do.
Thanks for the experience......
I just laughed so hard! Are we brothers? lol. This is me trying anything handy. Love all your videos. Keep it up :-)
I love the caution statement. the video was great to.
can i buy such a composting toilet online? any link you can provide? thanks
There's a whole section on composting toilets on the RV page of the blog. This post has a link & coupon code for a Nature's Head (what we have). www.gonewiththewynns.com/composting-toilet
Great video !You are so funny!we all have been there !I look forward to more videos !
Fun video. I hope it works for you. I'll be looking for your follow-up advice video. Great job. Peace.
I totally agree! And no bad words... My husband uses the M___F___ word alot when he does something like that install... Now go have a beer!
is it worth the money, effort etc.?
So what happens with the hose that fed water into the old toilet?? Does water not come out when the water pump comes on? I just took our toilet out of our travel trailer.. we aren't hooked up to water or have any water in it yet but the wife said... "what happens if we turn on the water pump, won't water come out there"... and I had an oh crap moment... lol
+Joshua Sikorski There was a shut off valve on our toilet connector.
