    Thanks guys, now I'm obsessed with composting toilets :P The person that designed our home only spec'd one bathroom for a two level five-bedroom home (i have no earthly idea why a second bathroom wasn't setup). Anyway, these videos have given me the confidence to pursue the idea of a second toilet for my house, and I'm going compostable. Thanks for the information and the entertaining videos.

    We have been using our Nature's Head on our sailboat for over a month. Yep, no smells and wow what a difference from a marine head. Hey, we use a spritz or two of vinegar after each use to keep the bowl clean and fresh. One note is that sometimes urine overflows the dam in the bowl. If this overflow gets into the base, then sewage and odor will result. Since the sailboat is rarely level, we put a small piece of top behind the dam to absorb any overflow if just urinating. Another trick is to keep to the front of the bowl as much as workable. Anyway, great video! Keep spreading the word on how better life is on the go with a Nature's Head!

      Douglas Tate People keep asking me about urine spilling into the solids area, I guess it's not an issue on the road...didn't think about people reading sailing blogs about these toilets. Nice solution.

    Great video. My particular issue is the urine dam doesn’t do it’s job well enough and I see moisture getting onto the trap door and into the mix. 😑

    Really appreciate the info you guys put up about composting toilets. My partner and I bought a Separett Privy 500, because we couldn't afford the Nature's Head toilets which are so nice! The Privy is a urine separating toilet seat, so it does the same thing as yours, we just built the base ourselves to save some money. Just an alternative for those of us with shallow pockets. :) Thanks again!

    I have a sort of delicate question. With what do you clean the bowl so that it stays hygenic? Vinegar, bicarb and water, just water? Can one use an after wipe with drops of essential oil or does that kill the microbe action in the compost?

  • @lisasis2c235
    @lisasis2c235 10 років тому

    Just one more question....If you have the toilette outdoors do you still need to hook up some electricity to the fan? would you recommend this sort of toilette for indoor use in a home....in the case where you want to use less water this seems like the optimal situation. Lastly can you use this sort of toilette to compost cat poo? Thanks for your answer to these questions...PS I do use DE to keep odor down in the cat box already...but I'd love to find a way to keep the cat boxes less smelly and this seems like a better way to have the cats in a more sustainable way.

    After watching both this and your earlier video about your composting toilet, I'm still a little unclear about something. Do you have to remove the toilet from your RV to empty it? That seems like a bit of a hassle and is somewhat conspicuous.

    Does the vent fan have to run constantly, or can a timer be incorporated? For instance either run a set number of hours after each use, or on / off intermittently.

    I may have missed it but is there any special toilet paper required and in terms of keeping cleaning the bowl if required, what are your recommendations. I assume it would be counterproductive to wipe the bowl out with disinfectant as this will kill the bacteria utilised in the composting process.

    Are you still happy with your decision to use composting toilet? For our 1st composting toilet would you suggest going for broke and adding one to your home or start by converting your rv toilet? Would you know cost differences? Also, when converting rv one did you have a professional come in? (For home we are are a family of 6/one in college atm) but this would be a basement 2nd bathroom... Thank you. I really enjoyed your video! Subscribed! ☺

    • @gonewiththewynns
      @gonewiththewynns  8 років тому

      100% satisfied. You can always add it to your home then put it in your RV as you travel. The only issues is with that many people you'll need to plumb the urine into the black tank and you'll have to swap your compost medium every couple weeks.

    The way I understand it, it seperates the wet from tue dry right? But when I go number 2 I also go number one as well like in the middle does that affect the way the toilet works?

    How heavy is it when it's time to dump it? I'd be afraid of dropping it! Also, I know you insist there's no smell, but urine does have a distinct odor. Does that smell just go away with time? I know you can always smell if a small child has wet their pants, so I have a hard time understanding why the liquids tank doesn't smell!

    • @gonewiththewynns
      @gonewiththewynns  8 років тому +2

      +Kirstin Fristad It's not too heavy, nikki or i can lift it no problem.
      the urine does smell when emptying the tank, that is the most difficult part to deal with.

      The Nature's Head is about the same size as a regular toilet, only the base is thicker. From the Nature's Head website, the empty weight of the toilet is 28 pounds. Add another 7-10 pounds for a full bin.

    OK here's the deal. How do you get a clean bottom after going? That's the only thing that keeps me from getting a Nature's Head composting toilet right a way. What about the TOILET PAPER! Once I go I want to get a clean bottom. At home that's no problem because you just wipe and drop the toilet paper in the bowl - wipe three times and flush; wipe three times and flush. By then the bottom is clean. Can you do that with a composting toilet? On the boat I use a porta potty and use the toilet paper that is designed to disolve in the holding tank. Surely you want a clean bottom too so what's the procedure? Remember that first wipe is the worst so it MJST go in the bowl. I anxiously await your response.

    I see no value in a composting toilet at all. First the expense is 8 t0 10 times more than a regular RV toilet. Second is the added expense of the compost material you must buy, store and mix. Third you got to take the toilet out of you rig to remove the compost material. Just so you don't have to smell your own poop. Hint Glade sell a very good product that with a squirt before things get moving solves that problem.

      Gone with the Wynns Hmmm, I would imagine rocks could make tiny scratches that would cause urine to embed in it. Maybe soft, smooth marbles? Maybe the manufacturer wanted it to 'sound' as simple as possible, i.e. "as easy as using rocks found outside to clean" as a selling point. Personally, I would use something like smooth glass marbles, or even small smooth rubber balls to keep the interior abrasion-free.
