Is There Really a Truck Driver Shortage in the US?

  • Is there a truck driver shortage in the US? The ATA says YES while OOIDA says NO! Today we'll explore these two contrasting perspectives. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) claims that there is a significant shortage of drivers, especially for long-distance over-the-road (OTR) companies. For nearly four decades, the ATA has steadfastly maintained the existence of a significant truck driver shortage in America. They propose solutions such as using truck simulators and partially automated semi trucks, and allowing interstate teenage truckers.
On the other hand, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) argues that the problem is not a shortage of drivers, but rather a retention issue. They suggest that the focus should be on improving conditions to retain drivers, rather than recruiting new ones. Is it truly a matter of not having enough drivers, or is the trucking industry struggling to keep them? They contend that the ATA has effectively convinced the masses of a truck driver shortage, exemplifying the illusory truth effect - the tendency to believe false information after repeated exposure.

Two weeks ago over 2,000 people with DOT/MC numbers closed their doors. Just today a 60 year old company, relied on USPS for their main contract, laid off 350 drivers! There is no shortage of drivers. New drivers and foreign drivers will work for less pay! Companies have two types of overhead cost! First is things they can not control, like taxes, permits, insurance. What they can control is labor cost! When the uncontrollable cost rise, they must look to controllable cost by either pay reduction, employee reduction or replacing higher paid employees for new employees at lower cost. This is the reality of business! If there were a shortage of drivers, no one would be getting laid off and companies would not be closing doors! This guy is cherry picking anecdotal situations! NO DRIVER SHORTAGE!!!

If there is a truck driver shortage, that means there is a shortage of trucks to move all the product. If that was the case, the shippers would be paying higher freight rates to get what trucks they can to get their product moved and that’s not happening.

I'm a recent cdl grad & the rate of rejections by companies that I've been experiencing has me leaning towards thinking there is no shortage of drivers. Yes I know it's the experience of most new drivers but the low rates & the unwillingness of entities to take a chance to some degree shows there is no desperation to move loads. Of course it may be in part to my location but I'm eager to spend some time in the industry to see more of the prevailing factors.

The economy is based on the concept of supply and demand to establish value. If a product or service is in short supply, value and cost increase. All you have to do to assess the supply of trucks and drivers is look at how much drivers are paid and what freight rates are paying. Wages and rates are near all-time lows. Thus, there are too many drivers and trucks.

Its the mega carriers crying about not having drivers to cover all the freight they keep for themselves instead of letting the over capacity owner operators have that freight smdh‼️

Great video! I really enjoyed watching your analysis on the truck driver shortage in the US. It's interesting to see the different perspectives on this issue. By the way, I also have videos on my channel (@CompanyDriver) that discuss similar topics. Keep up the great work!

There is NO shortage! I’ve called few megas in the last few days and none are hiring out of California! Not sure why but they say it’s because of slow freight.

Probably going to get a ton of hate for this but…. There is a ridiculously serious professional driver shortage in the US and in insane over abundance of steering wheel holders….(please picture me behind a folding table with a change my mind banner across the front sipping a cup a java…)

Issues are a population that has grown over 100 million over the years and we has less or just the same amount of rest areas and truck stops so thats why they are filled and eith the growing population more loads are required to feed and carry consumer goods. You can see old fominion, swift and many other companies that cant get and drivers with yards filled with empty trucks and trailer and no drivers, we even see entire trains filled with jb hunt loaded trailers and last i checked a train cant deliver a load to a receiver. If you look the population will keep growing and need more loads but another reason is cheap loads that no one wants to do.

I'm not seeing a driver shortage ,I'm seeing compamys that can't keep drivers from lies and mismatched, one mega carrier I drove for ,while hire student drivers at low pay and keep them rolling hard till 90 day pay raise then thier stuck with the outher drivers waiting on loads for 24 to 72 hours , outher companies not paying for expensive or break down pay and driving unsafe equipment ,I can see a turn over rate from companies have more drivers then frieght ,Your replaceable for the next cheap driver to seat the truck

Dude the reason nobody wants to drive is because of the rates you are quoting. I'm not saying because of you personally, it's industry wide. The rates suck and they just keep getting worse
