- Seattle’s Nirvana redefined rock music in the ‘90s as leaders of the grunge movement. Decades later, the band-and its late frontman, Kurt Cobain-continues to make an impact on hip-hop. More established artists influenced by Nirvana include JAY-Z, Lil Wayne, and Kid Cudi. The band has seen a resurgence with the newer generation as well, with the late rappers Lil Peep and XXXTentacion paying tribute to Nirvana in their music. Other recent examples include Denzel Curry and Lil Nas X.

nirvana is just a band everyone can relate to , no matter what kind of music they’re in to
@Clout Lord stfu
Clout Lord even WHO??
Not really. I like some songs but they're a little too loud and screechy for me.
@@rara5x NIGGASSSSS.......

Haha your life sucks if you don't know Tame Impala.
lil nas x didn't even know who nirvana was lmfao
That's sad
jreds not really
Amari Bivins yes it is
He was a fucking Nicki Stan before he was famous, you really think he knows what good music is? Lmao
Cudi montage is a masterpiece.
Cudi is honestly the only rapper (except for X) that really understands Kurt's lyricism.

Travis: yeah 4:34
He was like yea bud, sure
Kid Cudi is too humble... I love that guy as an artist and person.
Irving Romo he was supposed to be the next Kanye idk what happened
Everydaynine _ lol cudi changed music wym?
Real recognize real, fuck drake
@Sam C do you even know who Cudi is? What has he ever done that wasn't humble?

Funny how Kurt would have despised the misogynistic lyrics of a lot of the artists mentioned in this video.
@@SammyxSweetheart.02 was he really?
Keegan Ollerhead well gangster rap was hitting in the 90s (which talk about the same things now) when Kurt was alive and he still supported it
Did you know him personally? No. don’t speak for him you don’t know and we’ll never know.
@@dang7748 actually we do know. quite literally in the video they quote him saying if they hate women to leave him the hell alone.
Keegan Ollerhead yeah
I've been listening to alot of Nirvana recently, just reminding myself of how great their music is. Crazy how this video comes out
Same! I just got the smiley tattoo 4 days ago and this pops up weird lol

6:46 Smartest take! Denzel understands Kurt's real legacy.
CheesecakeLasagna he doesnt like that its being glorified but said “suicidal doors call it kurt cobain”. Ok buddy
glockGotaDick you know how some people say nigger because they want to get rid of the power it has over people? That’s kind of what Denzel Curry was trying to do imo.
glockGotaDick and it was literally because he felt used up by media and fans that he’s thinking of suicide like kurt
glockGotaDick Clout Cobain was about the industry and how some rappers are affected by it.
Record Labels, help you get all the flashy cars and women that you rap about, but in turn you don’t have any freedom. That line wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, hence the circus theme, it’s a depiction of the dumb shit rappers always brag about. It’s less about him wanting to commit suicide but a reference to Cobain and how he was suicidal and pairing it with suicide doors on an expensive car.
It also points out how people can’t catch onto certain things, until it’s too late.
With the exception of Kid Cudi and Denzel Curry who are clearly influenced by Nirvana, most rappers just name drop Kurt Cobain for clout and because its edgy and cool.
Lil peep was a fan of a lot of rock so I don't doubt he liked them. Post Malone listens to them too
Nirvana is a vibe I cannot explain
Prolly cant name they first album
hehe xd Bleach, Nevermind In Utero (you bitch)
They're good but imo Alice in Chains was better

"ohh I'm gonna talk about nirvana in the next video? aight lemme get this NIRVANA shirt on"
White girls who never listens to rock at hot topic: “Yo I really like this shirt I don’t know what the word “Nirvana” means but it’s seems really cool and trendy.”
BANANA BANANA well ya imean if you have a Nirvana shirt then it would seem pretty fitting to wear it in a video about Nirvana, don’t you think?
Yo I get how annoying it might be for you, but can we not fucking gatekeep Nirvana? I think it’s a great thing to have new fans.
As she fucking should because atleast she knows enough about Nirvana
Агнија were not gatekeeping we’re saying that to wear a bands merchandise especially nirvana (in their songs he talked about not wanting fake fans) you should at least know the band
Kid Cudi seems like the only one in this video that was legitimately inspired by Kurt
I'm a huge fan of MGK, but I really agree with you. Cudi is different, in a good way!
Agreed. All the others like Kurt's iconic image and how transcendent he was across music genres. Kurt was like Jimi Hendrix and Elvis Presley in that regard. Kid Kuddi is a fan of, and influenced by Rock Music. He's a multi-instrumentalist and it's fully incorporated into his music.
That being said, Kurt and Nirvana as a whole; you heard the multi-genre influences they had in their Music. Blues, Punk, Metal, Heartland, Country, Hard Rock. Grunge descends from those genres.
Rap and Hip-Hop today is complete stagnant and is all about following trends. Totally different from the 80s and 90s.

Considering Kurt was a massive feminist he would probably have hated X
Shannon Croghan idk. He seemed like a bit of a realist. Yes, X was accused of some horrific things, but there was a reason he became the person he was. It’s a really complicated situation and I just can’t see someone like Kurt just hating someone bc of that.
Stoney Tha God nope. Absolutely no excuse for beating up women.
@@stoneythagod7374 This is so wrong. Kurt absolutely hated people who mistreated women. He hated macho wife beater types and spoke out about it constantly. There is no way he would've fucked with x.
@@punt2263 Exactly he would never support those rappers.
I’m not on anyone’s side but.. he was never convicted 😗👀
All they know is in bloom and smells like teen spirit
Mikal bien-aime They should listen to Paper Cuts, Territorial Pissings and Milk It... see what they say
This is an awful case of gatekeeping. Yeah I’m sure the ones dropping Kurt’s name for clout don’t really care, but I’m sure some of them actually enjoy they’re music. Let’s be honest for a second, In Bloom and Teen Spirit are good songs. Don’t even try to tell me that YOU got introduced to Nirvana through Bleach.
TheGreenWondr I didn’t say they didn’t. I’m sure nas x and whoever else loves em. But the ones dropping for clout can do better....

panini barely sounds like in bloom they just cleared the sample to make headlines
CRCL Kurt was given writing credits
@@stephen5601 yes he has a writers credit cuz panini has the "same" vocal melody of the chorus in in bloom which is techinically a sample and had to be cleared by cobains estate. i just think it barely sounds like it and they wouldnt of bothered clearing it if it wasnt for the fact the clearance of the sample would lead to headlines to promote the new single. i still like both songs btw haha just pointing it out
either way the vibes are good
the chorus of the two songs are incredibly similar

Kurt was very precious...gone too soon. He achieved a lot though and i love seeing the legacy live. He was so unproblematic
It’s funny how rappers praise rock, but rap listeners hate it for no reason
Most of raps listeners are suburbans that are afraid of being called weird
Kurt would’ve hated the lyrics to basically all of these artists
Ian I think it’s funny that the whole movement of nirvana and grunge was based on anti materialism, and staying true to yourself. But almost all these artists are highly materialistic
Artists????? Haha
@@JacobJoyce1 these mumble trappers aint worth shit
@@JacobJoyce1 I mean, Kurt died with a net worth of 50 million USD and the Kurt Cobain estate is currently worth 450 million USD.
The only one who kept being himself/anti-materialism out of that movement was Layne Staley. And God knows what an awful end he had.
TRAP IS DOGSHITTT well uh, I hate to break it to you. But music is art. And people do like their music. So technically they are artists. I’m not a fan either. But uhh, I don’t regret referring to them as artists.

I was 14 or 15 when Nevermind came out. At the same time I was getting high for the first time and hitchhiking around town with it playing on my Walkman or Discman (can't remember for sure). What a time to be that age.

The other one was taken down
Makes sense. West Coast/East Coast rivalry was brewing, was making airwaves. Grunge had just shook up the entire music world with Nirvana being the at the top in terms of success and recognition. This is what led to events in which Kurt and these other rap stars would’ve been present and could’ve met. In fact, there’s a photo of Kurt, Dre, and Snoop together in 92, right around the time The Chronic dropped and a year after Nirvanas Nevermind brought grunge to the masses. Let’s not forget Dre had already achieved fame with NWA. Hip hop and rock were both firing on all cylinders at this time. And I think the hip hop community had a lot of respect for Kurt, the face on the grunge billboard which revolutionized rock at the time and a man who stood firm in what he believed in. I feel what Kurt was to rock in the 90s was what PAC was to rap in the 90s. Iconic. Represents a group. Voice of a generation. Both men. It wasn’t a matter of Kurt just somehow had this special connection to hip hop. It was a matter of real recognizing real, even within completely different music genres
Thank you for doing this! I grew up during this time & it’s hilarious how back then I NEVER would have thought rap would have stayed strong post 90s😩🤣. Rock was still hot but rap was flourishing. Back then I really only listened to rock & I’m happy Kurt’s influence is still being felt. He was definitely a rock god/genius even if he didn’t realize it😩😢
