Back in the 90's and early 2000's, high end arcade boards like the Sega Model 1, 2 and 3 were so far ahead of what home consoles and even Gaming PC's could achieve at the time that pretty much the only devices capable of 3D graphics that were more powerful than them were high end SGI workstations, CGI render farms and NASA supercomputers!
Not 100% true.. it took specially designed DEV-PC's to make these Arcade games, But those PC's were not for sale as a consumer product! Sources say 1 of those DEV-PC's if bought "privately" aka for other Arcade game companies to use* was around 12 thousand to 16 thousand. PC's were always the master race even back then as they are now.

Funny enough the only other game that I've seen that does it as nice as it is in here is, of all things, Mario Kart 8. Wouldn't be surprised if people of that staff are fans of Sega arcade racers
Because now it's the more "OH LOOK HOW REALISTIC THIS IS WOW!" than having originally. Yes, it's good to have games that looks realistic but you're going to miss some character or charm into the mix. Going to talk about cars racing games for a moment excuse me... -Look at Automobilista, cel-shaded, Still looks great today! Unfortunately the US version physics kinda sucks compared to the Japanese release. -Ridge racer series, looks kinda shiny tbh but it have it's own theme going. All ridge racer installments are worth looking into, even the recent ones. (But I will say I do not like Type 4. 30fps, car handling is confusing for me, fuck the announcer.) -Daytona USA series, 1/2 are timeless classic, the remake is ass tbh lazy as hell. -Sega rally series, Surprise all of them are good, 2 is my favorite thought even though I didn't play it a lot. -(2008) Grid, it looks griddy (Sorry I can't resist) but the gameplay is versatile and have a lot of themes going for to play that game on hours on end! 2 is not as fun and the remake is incomplete making the reboot a hard pass for me. -Need for speed, It's need for speed. Always have it's up's and down's with each installment. Also the fandom is beyond recovery. -Enthusia professional racing, Crazy because it's better than GT4 as terms for physics and also this game is unique with it's diversity of cars, tracks and music. -Speaking of the Gran Turismo games, 1-4 are still enjoyable all around too! 5-6 are... Not that great and Sport is... Scummy. -Forza Motorsports 2-4. The ammount of effort is amazing in those 360 games. 5-7 just feels quite hollow and not that exiting. Horizon is good for all games but the peak for me was at 3, 4 is samy and I feel like the series will be CoD at this point... Or it's already have. -Maric Kart, still making friendship end dramatically c': -Fuck 8 tho- -The crew series, Was expecting to hate on it. Turns out if you have a dedicated racing wheel and just want a nice arcade fun traveling around the USA than boom. Game for you. I know I am missing some here, but that's all I have for now!
Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune has one of the greatest sense of speed. The car shakes like the hell during speed above 300 Km/H. Other physics in that game, meh.
I liked this version over Power Edition. The Hard car handled much better in this version IMO. The Easy car was also so fast it seemed broken (everybody I knew drove it without powersliding). Great driving!
it's too slow to reilably finish expert without running out of time, i've tried it, and yes, you only need to let go of gas and it will turn more, brake to turn even more
Well, outrun 2 for xbox had a track of this game, so a port for dreamcast, ps2, gc or xbox could had been possible at the time. A shame sega didn't bother on that. I can't believe we have dreamcast/ps2 graphics on arcade in 1996/1998.
So many memories I had of this one. Played for 3 years, during 10 days each year (It was on a Arcade Saloon in the Holiday region I always gone as vacations when I was a teenager). First year was for learning, second year I beat the Speed Record on Beginner Track, and in the Third Finish 1st beating the Speed Record again and Track Record on Beginner Track. So if she wasn't reset, there are a Arcade machine in Portugal that still have the memories of my summer days (The Arcade Saloon closed like 2 years after the last time I've been there)...
Man I love this version. The Forest Dome is so much cooler than Power Editions plain old open track. I really wish they would port this to something. I’m terrible at PC stuffs so setting up an emulator is tough for me to accomplish. Also if I ever was to become a Millionaire, I’d totally build a go-Kart replica of the Forest Dome to race on.
I really miss the good old days were Arcade Games were so much fun. The games nowadays Look so blend nowadays. What i also miss is midway's coin OP Division :/
Frapskillar not only that but I see far more ticket and kiddie games than proper arcade games like these. The only exception being house of the dead scarlet dawn but most games are so casual, boring and over very quickly instead of rewarding the player for great game performance.
It's not deep, but I personally think Cruis'n Blast is awesome. I have two locations within an hour of me with machines (arcade in Holyoke Mall in Massachusetts has four of them lined up)
If you can, try to play Initial D stage games or Wangan midnight series. If you live in the USA and there is a Round1 near you there is a chance they are there. Trust me they are worth every penny!

@@haaxxx9 Sega can't touch Le Mans, Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Scud Race due to licensing issues but they can definitely port Daytona USA 2 because it has no real life licenses.
Amazing how effertlessly the Model 3 boards handles all that detail... I had to watch at 50% speed to even appreciate what's going on. Imagine what that hardware could do if they had optimized for it further instead of switching to Naomi. :)
DC was powerful enough to do Naomi (almost) but Model 3 was too powerful to replicate - as demonstrated by VF3TB and Sega Rally 2. Just like SCUD Race though, they could have at least tried, eh?
@@NeoGeoNinja81 Model 3 was silly powerful yes, but VF3 TB and Sega Rally 2 are bad examples. VF3TB was a launch title and the port was handled by a third party (Genki). Sega Rally 2 was a test bed for Windows CE to show devs that the DC was easy to program for. Windows CE was a bit of a resource hog. Virtual On Oratorio Tangram looked and ran VERY well; probably one of the best ports. The potential was there to make great ports. I guess the timing was bad. Outside of emulation, these games are lost to arcade history. Biggest letdown was that SCUD Race / Super GT was never ported. I believe some kind of port was being used as a tech demo for Dreamcast too. Wonder if the emulation community ever got hold of it.

I played this on an Xbox One controller and my controls were set in a way that most people probably wouldn't want to use it. I used the A and X buttons for accelerate and brake, which meant they weren't analog. I used all 4 shoulder buttons for the gears. That's about all there was to it.
I remember this game as a kid in the arcades. I also remember thinking the physics were garbage even compared to Need for Speed 1, 2, or 3. These are Mario Kart physics, but it's not as fun as Mario Kart. San Fransisco Rush was where the fun was to be had in an arcade racing game. And Hard Drivin' from 1989 blows them all away.
Good epic version Daytona, some people say i'm crazy, for me better graphics than Scudrace, because big map track, can see distance beautiful scenario...lol
I don't know of a way to play this one with a decent sound balance while being able to hear the crew chief. I found it works all right in the Power Edition, though.
This is the info I used from the Supermodel forum. I think by default, these service and test keys are 7 and 8 on the keyboard. DAYTONA USA 2: BATTLE ON THE EDGE and POWER EDITION (Model 3 Step 2) Method 1 Go into the test mode and push the service and test button on the PCB at the same time.
Here's some info about the music in this game from Wikipedia. "Contrary to popular belief, the band Winger did not create an entirely new soundtrack for the game or perform it as a band. Instead, the guitarist and drummer for Winger, Reb Beach and Rod Morgenstein, lent their skills to contribute to the soundtrack." The singer in this game is Dennis St. James. A different arcade racer, NASCAR Arcade, on the other hand, does feature Crush 40.
