Thanks for the overview. What irritates me is that almost every UA-camr defines "professional" work as graphic intense, but I consider the work we do in our company as highly professional, producing educational and marketing material for entrepreneurs working online. For that we mainly use online based tools like SquareSpace, Canva, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, SmartSuite, ZOHO Projects and other similar applications. One of the exceptions is Camtasia another is Screen Studio, which both runs perfectly fine on a iMac M1 or a MacBook Pro M1 Pro. We are currently waiting for an iMac M3 (10 core, 24 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD), a MacBook Pro M3 Pro (11 core, 18 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD) and one MacBook Air M2 (10 core, 16 GB RAM and 512 G SSD).

For a family computer, this works for parents that are not tech savvy. Just spec bump it up to 16GB of RAM and the family can enjoy a simple and highly effective computer.
For professionals, this still works under some conditions.
    - Bump up the specs to a 16/512GB configuration. Price jumps up to $1749 pre-taxes (including $50 for Touch ID).
    - Check with your HR & IT team can you work from home and use a MacBook via SSH connection.
    - If the company provides a work laptop, use that for the few times you need to go into work. If not, you might need a refurbished MacBook Air for the few times someone has to come into the office.

so comparing the mid range and the cheapest, the only real difference is the 2 extra GB of GPU is this correct? (the extra pots can be solved by adapters and touch id not really essential to me) So unless doing intense 3d rendering works, maybe choose the base model raise the memory to 24g and harddrive to 512g would be enough for a solid machine?

All I can say is Apple really missed out with the missing ports. Standard "A" Connectors would help for those of us who still have many peripherals. Also card readers. The guts inside are great but....

I have the iMac and I love that it only has USB-C ports. Looks sleek and now usb hubs are powered by the usb-c port and don't need a separate power brick. Which is great. The only thing I miss on my iMac is the ability to use it as an external display. Only possible through Airplay Mirroring which even with a thunderbolt cable is not a seamless experience.

I was gonna go with a MacBook Pro but I already have an iPad Pro 12.9" M2 with a Magic Keyboard and that's enough for my work and school on the go. Ah im in love with apple products!

The iMac retina screen is beautiful. On a 27” 4k monitor you can still see the pixels, here you can’t. And that makes a difference on a screen this size.

The main reason to get the iMac ( which is what I did ) is because you want the simplicity and power of it.
If you don't care to have different parts, then it is hands down better to go with a Mac Mini and max that out.

I struggled with this dilemma after the "Scary Fast" event. A little disappointed we didn't get a "Pro" 27"/32" version of the iMac, but as Apple said, there is the "Studio" set-up option, though a little pricey and not M3.
I went with the Blue iMac with 8core CPU, 10core GPU, 16core Neural Engine, 24gb UniMem. & 1TB storage, for $3,658 AUD (with student discount).
This was for a number of reasons, firstly, I had the M1 iMac (Full Spec.). Never skipped a beat, and ran like a dream looked absolutely gorgeous, plus the attention to detail with colour matching peripherals and braided cords was just *Chef's Kiss!*. also, you'd be hard pressed to find a similar spec. monitor with a comparable build quality and stunning design of the iMac and still be within budget, plus you still get all the matching magic peripheries.
But in my case, I was starting from scratch and needed all components, plus, Im a little OCD, so the whole matching everything was a big pull for me.
And as with the M1 iMac, I am absolutely loving the M3 iMac experience so far. It's everything I loved about the M1 but, better.
And I will say this about Apple's supposed "miss" with not going USB-C for the Magic Mouse/Trackpad/Keyboard...., Does it really matter, I mean how often do they need to be charged, seriously, and its not like anyone is transferring data via Magic Accessories, so what do they really need USB-C for? And besides, what else is everyone going to do with their old Lightning cables.
(That was longer than I intended, but I hope it helps when weighing your options.)

As you may have heard, Apple explicitly came out and announced that they had no intention to release a 27" iMac. This is given more weight as there is no M3 Pro option, as leakers had suggested. I suspect that the 27" Apple Display was originally intended to be the chassis of a 27" iMac with some mor robust options. Since when does a display need its own motherboard? But when the plans for the M1 Extreme evaporated, leaving the Apple Silicon Mac Pro crippled, the Mac Studio was conceived and released. The MP’s days are probably numbered, as the Apple Silicon version does away with most of what made the Mac Pro “pro” in the first place except for a narrow cohort of specialty high-end users.
And this works out just fine for Apple, the attention is now focused on the iPhone and Laptops. For desktop users who want a more capable machine, best upscale your budget, for a specced up Mac Mini, or Mac Studio, and add display, keyboard, mouse/trackpad a la carte, for much, much more that where a iMac Pro price point might sit. As the owner of an aging Classic Mac Pro 2012…. At age 65, I have to consider what my next, and possibly last, professional Mac might be. But it’s probably NOT and iMac.

    • @MarkSpurrell
      @MarkSpurrell  6 місяців тому +1

I agree with most of your points. I do think a larger iMac is still likely in the works at Apple though. Apple may say they have no plans to make a 27” iMac, but that careful wording leaves open all other display sizes. Not to mention it is within their best interest to encourage consumers waiting on a larger iMac to “buy now” instead of sitting on their money.

It seems that twice already Apple has shown that it's gonna put its more powerful chips in its notebook & desktop computers; especially the M2Pro Mini and Mac Studio machines. I think the iMac is now destined to be an entry level Mac for schools, family computer, small business, and the like.

It’s too little for me, but with this resolution people tend to just move them closer and it’s not a big deal. Big monitors are only really useful if you can put them far enough away for the right viewing distance anyway, so for a small desk this might actually be more convenient.

My maxed out iMac Pro 2017 has never even politely burped since then, so while I fight a little underwhelment at the M3 iMac, my iMac Pro came in at over $6K. I’m not doing dropdeadline work anymore, so I’m looking forward to taking delivery of a maxed out M3 iMac for a little over $3K minus a $550 trade in discount for the Pro. I ran the numbers for various M2 Mini configs with the lovely Apple Display and choked on the prices. Call me cheap in retirement.

Also, it’s not easy to find a monitor that works well natively with apple’s graphic chipset. So, you have to spend a lot more going with a 27in Apple monitor to get the best look resolution wise.
