In case anyone is still wondering - I actually bought both and sawed both of them open. They are the exact same inside with an aluminum disk at the bottom. End of argument.
I thought for sure that you were going to say the Pathfinder skillet was more expensive than the Primus, it's good to see that the "common man" as Mr. Canterbury like to say is actually the affordable one,,,and with a lid! Thanks for sharing.
I actually have the Pathfinder skillet (WITH lid) and it has to be the best buy I've made. One thing tho, you NEED to watch Dave Canterbury's video on "treating" the skillet and how to properly use it BEFORE first use. follow his video's advice and it will serve you very well. I did and "haven't looked back" so to speak., since!
I have a Pathfinder from Self Reliance Outfitters and it is exactly the same as the Primus 21cm skillet. Although the Primus skillet does not come with a lid, it does have a sexy "Primus" etching on the skillet and tag (rare Peruvian Satin guinea pig leather?) attached to the handle for about $15 more.
I believe the Primus has a bonded aluminum disc on the bottom of pan for even heat distribution (according to their website). I don't think the pathfinder does.
Eat Carbs Outdoors that's right! At first it was just the pan for $15, but then sro came out with the lid both as a separate item for people who already bought one and they changed the new buyer option to $20 with the lid. I'm a big fan of sro setting a more common man profit margin. It makes you think about what you get for the markup on some of these items.
I have the 25 cm Primus and it is a great pan but I seen the pathfinder and it looks exactly the same to my eyes. Pathfinder says all steel but Primus says alum base......can you weigh each one? let us know? Cheers
Pathfinder ... In Stock ??? I never could find one in stock with them. Even left a to be notified with them , heard nothing. After 6 months ( I even checked back several times ) I gave up and got the Primus. To make it even sweeter , I'm a Cabelas member so I used some of my saved up Cabelas points to get it. ( no money exchanged hands )
Chuck Littleton they sell out fast. The last time I bought one for a friend I was alerted by the email. The good news is they are more likely to have the separate sale lids.
Good comparison. I have the Pathfinder skillet with lid and have cooked in it dozens of times. It is a great skillet and heats very evenly across the bottom. Low heat works good. I've been curious about the Primus skillet for some time now. It does look the same but it is advertised with an aluminum disk bonded to the bottom. The Pathfinder skillet has a steel disk and is very magnetic, much more than the cooking part of the pan. If you have a magnet can you check both the Pathfinder to see what I mean and then the Primus to see if there is indeed a difference (if the priumus bottom is aluminum like they say, which would make it non magnetic). Also have you seen any difference between them performance wise when cooking? Thanks
Agreed. They are all made in the same Chinese factory, they just print your own brand on it :) Many products are made like that nowadays, we only believe we are buying different brands, while we actually buy the same Chinese products...
it is really ugly that company's can just start buying stuff and brand them with there own logo and say it is a new product. you see it everywhere and it really annoys me.
Wrong. They are not the same. The Primus is better to cook on. The Primus pan is built like standard and higher end kitchen cookware with an aluminum layer on the exterior for better heat distribution. Go to Macy's, William Sonoma, or visit the All Clad website. You will learn from the sale staff why aluminum bonded to the underside of the stainless steel pan is a better solution. This difference is readily available when cooking. You can see it when simmering, you can see it when the wind is blowing the flame uneven on your camp stove, you can see it when a stove flame is hotter than required or has poor heat controls. There are many outer instances where you can view the superiority of the Primus pan, but you actually have to cook with it and not just take a video of it when it is nice and shiny.
Okay. I wanted to buy the 25 cm. pan but pathfinder was a hard find. With the extra delivery charge on Amazon the 21cm. Pathfider pan was pricier, however with a lid. I opted for the primas 21 and 25cm. skillets and with universal lids from the Stanley even cook pro set I am looking forward to some enjoyable cooking. It is obvious that the Primas fit and finish makes it appear to be a better pan but the proof is in the cooking.
The primus skillet seems to be nonexistent in Canada now. Do you have any experience with the 10" glacier Stainless troop skillet as a comparable replacement to the 25cm?
Jay Kae stay tuned. I recently picked up the GSI troop skillet which looks to be pretty fantastic... I have it in my possession but I haven’t gotten a chance to use it yet. The skillet is available separately as well as with the very large troop pot set.
@@Thereal111t I'm very curious to see how it pairs with the alpine 4 pot set and the trangia 25 set. I like the systems you've put together. I eagerly await the verdict.
@@Thereal111t could you confirm whether it nests together with either the alpine 4 pot set or trangia 25? It's on sale at my local outdoor store but due to corona I can't confirm if it will fit or not before ordering.
Gary voigt yes I’m sure you’re right. It’s amazing that the pathfinder school is able to sell it for $20 with a lid. It’s simultaneously amazing that Primus is selling it for $40-$50.
The primus is built with an aluminum base plate. They are not the same pans. The Pathfinder is a cheap stainless steel only pan that will burn food easily.

C Z there you go!
Was exactly what I wondered....thx
They look identical to me. Thanks for sharing brother.

I wish the shipping for Pathfinder products was a bit cheaper!

So glad I ordered the pathfinder over the msr alpine.
Even better when you season the SRO SS skillet.
Can u really season SS?

Rocky Intertidal; Not "sexy" enough to me to justify the higher purchase price without lid.

You are correct. The Primus pan is superior for anybody who knows anything about cooking (walk into any restaurant kitchen and ask a chef).
Nope they both do.
Nice set up. Good value too
Same pan with lid and less money? Ok
Thanks for the video

pathfinder is all steel primus is steel with aluminum bottom plate to distribute heat better. Not the same despite appearances.

Wyatt Carson I will check!
Thanks, I await your observations.
Thereal111t and... he never returned
You should check it against the MSR alpine fry pan. Very similar
I think I did...

Pathfinder is the way to go
Nice video, thanks.
Same, same.
Maybe Pathfinder sold a bunch of skillets to Primus.
Oh how the prices have skyrocketed in 5 years 🙄
They can’t just conjure billions of dollars out of the ether every day and expect inflation to be reasonable.
What do rock bands knows about making skillets anyway? he he he ...
MrFullautoak47 they know how to frizzle fry an egg when they’re sailing the seas of cheese.
