I love their storyline. And I loved how Atticus looked at Rose after she said “What difference does it make?” I think Atticus knew then he had found someone very special. They’re a lovely couple.
rose is the original virtue singular, announcing she gives a tea for russian refugees, her version of today would push her future husband away and call him an oppressor
Of course he thought that. He didn’t tell her before because he was scared of her reaction. Antisemitism was terrible then. He couldn’t believe her kindness!
Hardly anyone in the West or in the USA knows history. It was not without reason that there were two pogroms in Odessa. So this man was right when he said that they weren't Russians then either.
I have aways loved how simple there meeting was and how within the first thirty seconds of the audience seeing Atticus you see he is a perfect gentleman.
Atticus was struck by the thunderbolt the minute he first set eyes on Rose. When she accepted that he was Jewish without missing a beat, that sealed the deal. Atticus was landed, hook, line and sinker.
I love the fact that he was simply doing the gentlemanly thing in helping a lady with too many bags in her hand get her umbrella opened up. Two sweet people bump into each other in the midst of a storm. xD I love lemorab's comment about the lightning striking him lol
3:27 - I think this is what finally won Atticus over. Rose was always portrayed as being remarkably free of any ethnic prejudice. She doesn't think twice about Atticus being Jewish any more than she really cared about Jack Ross being black. Atticus realizes this girl is a 'keeper' and asks her out to dinner. Fantastic. 💑
The actor did a wonderful job orportraying the hesitation of Rose finding out he was Jewish and acceptance that she would reject him and show hatred towards it for him like the Russia just had. He definitely opened up his heart once he knew he would be accpeted by her. Religio , race and all.
I did love the way that she said, "You're English now, but your still Jewish, what's the difference". However I do think that in a way she was using Jack Ross to torture her mother, I remember there was a scene where she was telling Lady Mary that she wanted to see the look on her mother's face when she told them they were getting married.
She used Jack Ross to get a rise out of her mother, or at least she would have if Lady Mary hadn’t put a stop to it. It was very immature and thoughtless of her, and Mr Ross deserved a lot better than just being used for his skin colour.
I both admired and was worried for Rose because of her free spirited and open-minded nature. In a world where class and background meant everything she was her cheery sweet self to everyone no matter their station. Servants, black people, poor people, jewish everyone was equal in her eyes. I just worried that she would unintentionally get herself into harms way, but everything worked out in her favor at the end and Im so happy for her!
I loved this storyline, they were so gentle and unassuming and free of drama (too bad Count Rostov and Rose's mother provided drama enough...) They were perfect for one another!
I loved Roses character. She sees people as people first and not their race or religion. Her relationships are always with those on the margins and it makes sense for the character since her mother always disapproved of her and never made her feel she was good enough.
I love the Atticus/Rose story line. I hate how Rose's mother is so anti-Jewish, like Count Rostov. Atticus knows what is coming when Rose introduces him as Jewish from Odessa.
As much as I hate Rose's mother, I respect the decision to make her an anti-Semite. It's historically accurate. I would have been ridiculous if they all were fine with the romance, it's the 1920s. My mom is Jewish and faced some prejudice marrying my dad, who is Christian. It would have been so, so, so much worse back then. I appreciate that they chose to showcase that dark side of history. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it and all that. Antisemitism is still so prevelant today, but it's rarely talked about.
@@lizaluk - My cousin's Christian daughter had to convert to the Jewish faith so she could marry a Jewish man. I think the Conservative Jews require this, but Reformed Jews don't.
I'm not certain, but when the Russian man says "We are strangers in a strange land.", it could be a reference to a line from the stage play Fiddler On The Roof: "Soon we will be strangers in a strange new land.", a musical that was set in 1905 Ukraine. So, perhaps around the time that the man came to America himself.
I agree 💯!! She’s so beautiful and played that part so beautifully … her youthful joy, her mannerisms, the way she’d tilt her head while wearing a hat and smile … Watching her makes me remember I need to be more joyful like her! ❤
Man, if only they had the automobiles in London during 1924 (I assume it's 1924), they were very colorful, a lot of light blue touring cars from the films I've seen, dark green, cream, dove gray. Beautiful car colors, just rare to see.
Phenomenal storyline throughout history God has chosen to stand in protection of our Jewish families because they were small and in need of protection of bullies. Blessed is the nation that blesses Israel. I love how Downtown Abbey does not shy away from the important topics that need to be honored. They make an adorable couple 💕
I can't believe the narrowmindedness and prejudice of that Russian dude. I mean, he and his people were themselves in some pretty bad trouble, living in exile after the criminal revolution, yet he still begrudged the Russian Jews to such an extent that he would rudely offend his British hosts, who were feeding him. The other Russian lady, the princess, was also extremely rude, although, in her case, it might have been personal as she and Violet loved the same man. Still, Isobel and Lord Merton were trying their best to be polite and accommodating, yet she showed them nothing but contempt. In any case, the Russians are portrayed very unflatteringly in DA.
T0:41 This guy just invited himself to cake?! Dubious character. And logically he does not fit the guest criteria: Russian refugee (although presently they are causing others to be refugees) and loves cake. This guy only meets one criterion, he loves cake, but no reason to believe he is Russian. What an opportunist, good move.
What are you talking about? His family were Jewish Russian refugees 3 generations ago, since then his family have been in England. And Rose invited him to have cake, he didn’t invite himself.
Some of us are. Sadly, many would rather follow their prejudice than follow Christ. People claim Christ but don’t follow him. Jesus commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves, no exemption clause for creed , color, nationality, or sexuality. Jesus wouldn’t stand for the hatred and oppression going on in my country. He would be turning over tables in anger from what he sees now.
Considering that the second, if not the first, most populous Jewish community of the world is in USA, I believe American Christians are mostly like that.
@@MidnightMusings948He turned tables over at the money changers... And while He loved sinners, He certainly didn't condone their sins... Reread your Bible and don't ignore verses such as Rev 3:9...
@@katie7748 She never said he condones sins, she says no matter what we are supposed to love others. No matter if they live in the way you think they should because we are all created in the image of God, they deserve kindness and respect. Sadly many people forget that in the way they act and focus on calling people out who may not even believe in God. They start of being passive agressive and meet people from a place of judgement. For example, okay I may struggle with this sin ( insert your struggle) but at least I'm not this or I'm not that. In the back of their head they think they are better then others. Holier then thou if you will.
It is hilarious! The count speaks with THICK Russian accent while he should have had an English nanny and his English is better than most of the folks around! Come on!
Rose has matured a bit, but she seems more prim and proper than is plausible. I mean, she has had an affair with a married roue and another with a black jazz musician. While these potential scandals were scotched and Rose was able to make an unblemished debut into Society, here it almost seems as if she has been re-virginized.
She genuinely never cared about class, race, or religion. But she did know others did, especially her mother. When she was a rebellious teenager she was very much about doing things to spite her mother, who did everything she could to bully Rose. When she grew up a bit under the genuine care of Robert and Cora she was less about spiting her mother and more about putting her kind and carefree nature to better use. I think she genuinely loved Jack Ross (who she got involved with not long after moving to Downton) and didn’t care about his race, but she knew her mother would be devastated by them as a couple and she relished that thought.
Let’s be honest: they were the best couple on the show. Certainly the healthiest.
I love their storyline. And I loved how Atticus looked at Rose after she said “What difference does it make?” I think Atticus knew then he had found someone very special. They’re a lovely couple.

I suppose the family always needs someone genuine to keep them grounded. Rose took up the torch from Sybil.
That smile of relief on Atticus’s face 🥹
A perfectly matched couple: both of them just as kind, sweet, and charming as they are beautiful.

His family was Russian. In the 1800s, Odessa was an important city in the Russian Empire. Now it's part of Ukraine. Unless Putin gets his way.
They were Russian in nationality, back then Russian wasn't an ethnicity but a nationality. But they were obviously offended because they're Jewish
The biggest part of Odessa population is Jewish.
