  • This video features the ex Formula One car of Gilles Villeneuve during the Modena Trackdays on circuit Spa Francorchamps. This Ferrari 126CK was the car with which Ferrari raced in the 1981 Formula One season. This Ferrari is powered by a 1.5 liter V6 turbo, which its power boosted to 650bhp in qualifying trim and around 600bhp in races. In this video you can see it in action with some amazing flames coming out from the exhaust pipes. The 126C series cars won 10 races, took 10 pole positions and scored 260.5 points.

    This is not the 126 C2 that Gilles drowe in 1982, this is the 126 C2 "B"with pull rod suspensions in front.
    Gilles never did use this version.
    Anyway what a beautiful car!!

    I love the compact, stout beauty of the early 80s cars. Fearsome little pocket rockets skating around the tracks. Modern F1 cars look so ungainly to me

    For me it's one of the most beautifull Ferrari F1 cars ever made. Unfortunatly it has such a bad history. First Gilles and later Pironi's career ending chrash at Hochenheim ring.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 6 років тому +17

      Definitely. The 1982 cars are still the most complete looking and neatest. They were as dangerous as Russian Roulette but they looked just about perfect.

      @@thethirdman225 If you look properly at the archives (videos and testimonies, mostly the one from Pironi on recovery) both of Villeneuves and Pironi accidents were motorsport ones. Nothing to do with the car. Except maybe that once the air got under them at 300 km/hour they went flying basicaly like most of the F1 cars.
      On September 1982 Villeneuve was totally pissed off that Pironi took the victory on the Grand Prix before and he was pissed during the time session, on his last lap he was asked to go back to the pit and he kept pushing thru his pit lap...i like Villeneuve, he was racing when i was a young but 256 km/h during a pit lap is not justified :)

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 5 років тому +3

      Réginald Leduc The cause and effect of those crashes can be considered independently. The triggers may have been racing incidents but what happened after that was aerodynamic. The problem with flying cars persists to this day, though they are slightly more resistant now. This 1980s aluminium chassis cars were lethal when things went wrong. There are computer models out there of Villeneuve’s Zolder crash that go part of the way to explaining what happened but the aerodynamic principles are not well understood by most racing enthusiasts.

    • @reginaldleduc9782
      @reginaldleduc9782 5 років тому +5

      TheThirdMan I agree. Bur it's a race incident. Villeneuve went on the right as did Jochen Mass, wanting to let the interior to the Ferrari supposing, considering its speed, that Villeneuve was on a time lap. Villeneuve didn't even try to break, staying on his line. Mass should have stayed on his own. And Villeneuve should have considerably reduced his own speed way before since he just got the order to go back to the pit lane for tyres parametry.
      The day before Villeneuve complained about «slow» racers. Senna complained about the left he died into...i call that pressentiment.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 5 років тому +4

      Réginald Leduc I know exactly what happened. I was heavily invested in it at the time, being a near-fanatical Villeneuve/Ferrari fan. Unusually for a Villeneuve fan, I liked Pironi too. I even have his autograph. But cars should not fly. Not ever. In 1982 they did not have the structural strength or integrity they have today and they usually just crumpled, mostly around the driver’s legs, which protruded well past the line of the front axle. The aerodynamics of the car did not take any of these possibilities into account either. They were fantastic to look at and fantastic to watch but they were extremely dangerous. So of course the car was a factor, irrespective of who braked where and who was going too fast.

    one of the specialities on the 126C2 was that the aluminium chassis plates were glued together. Not rivets were used. This was unique at that time.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 3 роки тому +2

      It wasn't unique. Harvey Postlethwaite had used it on his previous design, the Fittipaldi F8C. If you look closely, there is a strong resemblance in both construction and aerodynamics. What was different was that it used a new material; aluminium/honeycomb sandwich which was bonded together along a central seam. I think that's what you mean by no rivets. It was said to be about 25 kg lighter than the old 126C spaceframe it replaced, as well as being much stiffer.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 3 роки тому +1

      Carbon fibre - more than any other factor - has been responsible for the dramatic reduction in death and serious injury in motorsport. In 1982 we lost two drivers dead and one maimed, never to race again. So if you actually want to kill motorsport, then by all means, get rid of carbon fibre. It's a sad irony that 12 months after Villeneuve died, most cars had carbon chassis and had it been possible to build such a thing for Ferrari in 1982, he might have survived and Pironi's career might not have been cut short.

    Lástima que estos ricos conducen al 5% de lo que puede dar el coche. Gilles llevaba estos coches difíciles al 150%...

    The motor history and legends like this its close to the end i think that the electric cars not have the magic and soul like petrol engines . Its the same with the watches whem become digital era loose your magic and now the new generation dont use watches the electric car era kill the passion for the engines and the racing cars

    heel and toeing would help the gearbox on downshifts… probably a lost art :(

      This guy probably never learned that ! The Ferrari Classic F1 department sells old F1's to wealthy customers and give them assist at the track to run the cars....They need very deep pockets ! But these owners rarely have race driving knowledge, they are just fulfilling a dream running the cars on a racetrack ! Forget going near the limit...

      Dear god... That car has a crash box. With such long linkages, it would be near impossible to drive without heel-toeing.

    Questa non è la Ferrari di Gilles, è una 126/C2B che corse la seconda metà del mondiale 1982 affidata a tambay e Andretti, si può riconoscere perché non ha le carenature sulle sospensioni anteriori
