  • In this episode we share another "while I'm in here" story for Project Harold, our 1972 Chevy C10. This time is getting rid of our old, beat up 2 piece drive shaft and replacing it with a new and shiny custom 1 piece drive shaft from B & T Shaft & Gear in Ohio. We'll also go ahead and get the new shaft installed so we're 1 step closer to the finish line.

    I agree with the one piece drive shaft. I don't think I ever want to mess with a carrier bearing ever again.😂

    Nice install and good call on the one piece. You definitely got your money out of the old one! Lol at the Frankenstein part as that’s what I used to refer not only with parts but boxes shipping large items like bumpers when I was younger as you had to make your own to make a good profit. It has to be exciting, that much closer getting it on the road! 👍

      Thank you for watching and sharing the kind words. We appreciate you. Glad someone else got a laugh out the Frankenstein part and can relate. I'm just glad we went down this journey of learning or I would have never thought about changing it.

    Nice upgrade! I still have the 2 piece in my 79 Ford and wish I would have changed it out when I bagged it. Way less hassle.

    Weird my 72 stepside already has a one piece, I see so may have two piece. Back in the day it was a 402 with manual, now a 350 with TH 350. Wonder if the original combination came with a one piece?

      Hi Jeff. Thanks for watching and sharing. We appreciate it. If I recall correctly, somewhere I think I read that the stepsides were different than the fleet sides. I could be remembering that wrong though. Ours came with the 2 pieces, and we have the TH400 trans.

      Just after replying to yours I was replying to another viewer who has a 70 stepside and his has a 2 piece. Clearly not all steps have 1's. Lol

    How long is it? I have a 85 c10 long bed n I put a th350 short shaft in n I need a shaft tht is 74 n 3/4 long but shops around here said leave it a 2pc but I was wondering if I could do a 1pc aluminum

      Hi Brian. Thanks for watching and asking. We appreciate it. It's roughly 72-73 inches. Our shop did say we were right towards the area where they didn't recommend a 1 piece unless it was wider but of course wider won't work for our trucks. Thankfully they felt it was safe based on our driving style for it. We won't be doing burn outs or racing with it. Hope that helps.

    What transmission is in the truck? And how much did u pay for the single driveshaft? I ask cus i have a 69 c10 and im swapping out the 3speed for 700r4 and im either gonna have to cut n shorten one of the 2 shafts or go with single shaft, n my 2 shafts are in about same condition yours were in n i need to replace carrier bearing but i do have the press to do it but i would rather just go with single shaft.🇺🇲

      @racer67 thanks for watching. We have the TH400 and I believe the cost was around $600. Maybe a little less but I couldn't find my receipt to verify. There are less expensive places on line that will ship you one but the convenience of having the local support was worth the couple of hundred more. Sounds like you're in a similar dilemma as we were in. Good luck with your 69. What all are you doing to it?

      @@SpiritedWrenchers the truck i got was a rust bucket so far i welded 80% of the floor in inner outer rockers,cab corners,i welded new boxes on under the floor that mount to the frame where the door bolts to the A piller i had to weld that all the way up past the lower door mount that was a bit of work cus inside the A pillar theres L shaped tabs with threaded holes that float so wen u bolt the door on u can have some movement to adjust the door linement so i had to clean up the tabs make a piece put the tab on weld tabs holding the L shape threaded tab onto it then weld it onto the truck so when the bolts go in for the door it can float and thats thicker metal so i used i think quarter inch flat steel i welded the L tab to then welded it onto the truck i had to do both sides bcus both sides were rusted up past the bottom door mount holes lmc truck sells a piece that goes there but it only goes up to the bottom of the lower door bolt holes you would think theyd sell one that goes up higher and has holes in it but nope i think cus most truck arent rusted up that high but mine was so i had to make all of it hard to explain but it was a bit of a challenge, i had to weld firewall,i welded the whole bottom of the core support it was rusted out where the wheel wells bolt to bottom of core support so i had to also weld both ends of the wheel wells were the 3 bolts go thru i had to weld the bed side wheel arches alot of the metal i ordered from lmc truck but alot i fabricated like the bed wheel arch i ordered cus it has the body line inner outer rockers cab corners under floor boxes and new cab mounts all that stuff i got from lmc truck but bottom of core support alot of the fire wall inside the cab behind the glove box the A pillar i made all of that with verious thickness flat steel my friends say with all the welding i did i basically made a truck most people wouldnt of saved it but there expensive trucks these days especially where i live in Maryland there hard to find, i put new heater core water pump thermostat alot of small stuff new hoses ect,the heater box had a hole in it cus instead of someone doin it the right way they just cut the heater core out the box instead of taking the box off so i bought a heater box in good shape from swap meet i also bought a gauge cluster from same seap meet a guy switched his truck to dakota digital and had the original cluster with all gauges in it in beautiful condition so i bought it and installed it into my truck cus the one in it was all rusted up bad from no floor being in the truck for so long moisture coming up thru n ruined the gauges i also had to do ALOT of rewireing i pulled probly 10 lbs of wires out of the truck and spray foam i dug 2 black contractor bags full of spray foam out the truck but now the truck is just about done i also seamed sealed everything and put new seals on the doors its been a long road with the truck only thing have left is the bed floor has holes in it im gonna do kinda what you did probly do a 3/5 or 4/6 drop i was gonna do airbags but i want to put air bags on my 67 impala and i dont have the money to do both but my plan is to swap an automatic trans in it i have everything to do it i have the automatic steering column out of the same year truck so its the right column i put a new aluminum radiator in with the trans coolent provision holes i have the pre bent lines everything u need to do the swap only thing is what to do about the driveshaft bcus the 3 speed is a shorter transmission i have 3 transmissions to choose from i have th400 wich is what my friend says i should put in i have powerglide and 700r4 which i was gonna go with 700r4 anyway sorry i typed a book but believe me i would love to do more but money is always an issue im trying to save up now for the drop spring kit. Hello both of you, I have a question about a front wheel drive shaft, my question is could you interchange a drive shaft from a manual transmission to a automatic transmission. The length and the number of splines are the same on both ends. Hoping for an answer, thank you.

    • @SpiritedWrenchers
      @SpiritedWrenchers  8 місяців тому

      Hi David. Thanks for watching and sharing. We appreciate it. It's a great question. If the splines are the same and the length is the same, then from what I have seen and heard, you can use the same one. The biggest changes in that from what I've seen is that the transmission lengths are different so the DS doesn't fit both but it sounds like you're lucky enough that everything lines up great. Hope that helps. Stay safe out there!

    Nice driveshaft, I have a 1970 chevy c/10 fleetside shortbed and I'm looking to do away with my two piece and go to a one piece. What size driveshaft did you put in ?

      Hi Greg. Thanks for watching and sharing. We appreciate it. Thats awesome about you having a 70. I believe it's a 4in but I can confirm this weekend. We have about a half inch clearance on each side through the center member.

      @SpiritedWrenchers  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Thomas. Thanks for watching and asking. We appreciate it. Unfortunately I don't recall the exact measurements of ours but what I did was measure from the end splines of the output shaft to the center of the u-joint. Then brought that and the 2 piece to our drive shaft shop. They will likely ask you do the same thing to ensure everything is made right for your truck. Good luck with the swaps. Hope it goes well.
