- Kate performs "Violin" on the 1979 Christmas special.
Lyrics:
Four strings across the bridge,
Ready to carry me over,
Over the quavers, drunk in the bars,
Out of the realm of the orchestra,
Out of the realm of the orchestra.
Filling me up with the shivers.
Filling me up with the shivers and quivers.
Filling me up with the shivers.
Get the bow going!
Let it scream to me:
Violin! Violin! Violin!
Get the bow going!
Let it scream to me:
Violin! Violin! Violin!
Paganini up on the chimney,
Lord of the dance,
With Nero and old Nicky.
Whack that devil
Into my fiddlestick!
Give me the Banshees for B.V.s,
Give me the Banshees for B.V.s.
Jigging along with the fiddle, oh, Johnny.
Jigging along with the fiddle-dee-dee.
Jigging along with the fiddle, oh, Johnny.
Jigging along with the fiddle-dee-diddle-dee-dee!
Get the bow going!
Let it scream to me:
Violin! Violin! Violin!
Get the bow going!
Let it scream to me:
Violin! Violin! Violin!
Get the bow going!
Let it scream to me:
Violin! Violin! Violin!
Get the bow going!
Let it scream to me:
Violin! Violin! Violin!
That intro is heavenly
Yes. It sends shivers down my spine.
Body's aching all the time...
It is.
I love that the BBC were like “let’s give Kate Bush a no restrictions Christmas special that she can do whatever she wants with.” And the result? Violin Demons and Peter Gabriel complaining about dinner not being ready. I love it so much.
Well put!
Its so strange and surreal how she goes back to being this really shy and gentle girl in her private life ...
After the break to get you in the holiday spirit: A wedding murder and revenge killing!
@@88fejishe’s a real artist that’s why 🙏
Don't forget the sick ass solo too
This is what I call ARTPOP! Real ART!
Who would thought writing a song about a classical musical instrument would be so cool
Noticed some earlier comments below about a non-existent violin: Kate's octave scale B♭1 - F7 (58.27 - 2793.83Hz); violin octave scale G3 - E7 (196 - 2637.02Hz). In this song Kate hits C#5, G#5, B5 and F6. Kate IS the violin solo.
I see again why many of us punks worshipped her. Mad as a hatter, beautiful, fearless, boundlessly creative and subversive as an SS-20 up the backside. Delicious.
Punks love Kate Bush? the only punk musician i know who loves kate is Johnny Rotten
WalkingBlues
That may well be. But I never heard a word against her, quite the contrary. I didn't even knew Johnny was a fan. But it's obvious really.
yes i was back in teh days ,.. in teh 1980 s and lot my punk friends adore Kate Bush ,.. you do not know what you are talking about ,...fool,..
I never linked Kate to punk rock but I'm a punk and I love kate bush so I guess it makes sense
in 1978 kate bush was about as punk as abba. youre tastes have just changed with age.
THIS WOMAN IS PERFECTION !!!!!!!!!!!
I feel sorry for people who “don’t get” Kate Bush!
Those people haven’t evolved.
💖
My god I remember watching this when I was 14 still love kate
Amazing. Real heart in her art.
great song and memorable performance, there is only one kate
I adore Kate Bush. A total legend. She gave no fucks. Brilliant performer, fantastic writer - what hasn’t been said? She just makes me insanely proud she British. We are mental.😂🇬🇧
I love this woman so much just got into her music about month ago and Im a big fan
Like no other. God I'm glad I was 14 in 79' and could appreciate the enigma that was the beautiful Kate Bush.
I LOVE THIS
Smashing
18歳の時にハマった曲
Kate you are just...my heroine!!!
Indeed,violins and orchestra please.
LOVVEEEEE
Love Kate ❤️❤️
I saw her do this live in 79 on her only tour. It was a great gig but I think if this had been her first single, and we hadn't been introduced to her via Wuthering Heights, she'd have disappeared without trace.
So Arnie's theory is...Wuthering Heights, an absolutely bonkers unrealistic hit, buffered the mania that followed. No Sir, her mania is what has made her special, and enough people recognized it to make her an ICON. She's the most amazing blip in popular musical history. It makes no sense, but there it is.
ухх крутая Катюша , кайфую с неё!!!! А темка то роком попахивает )))

iconic
Great
she's wack i love it
There is some violin in a few parts that play along with the guitar. I believe it is Alan Murphy on lead guitar because the Never for Ever album was released in 1980 and this show is 79,
and it does look like him. Del Palmer, bass. drums is Preston. Brian Bath, second guitar
A shroud draped over the fold back and the stage to give Alan a kind of gothic spook apparition. It is different from the album but the solo sounds double tracked which could indicate it was pre-recorded
Kate bush hai una voce bellissima. Non ti arrendere e fai altri album
this known as FULL Kate Bush!!!
I was knocked out. awesome
This a first for me,to see this video..very quirky,but that's Kate.
yeh fruit bat me i love it ! too
I never imagined I’d ever see kate prancing in this dress!!
Kate Bush Is God.
And my religion is Katebushism
Still feel it's a shame she didn't get a fiddle player to play the break. Instead of an electric guitar.
But gotta love Kate for creating a song which expresses a love for the violin. :-)
And now...off to listen to Stuart Duncan for a bit. Fellow fiddle lovers, check him out!.;-)
1:54 best part
Kate does a Roxy Music old style for us (with Eno).
kinda nina hagen-esque here
What was in the water in England that gave us Bowie and Kate at roughly the same time? Weird, wonderful, unforgettable.
EricH928 Oddly enough they both had the same dance instructor (though a decade apart), Lindsay Kemp.
Yeah but I suspect Kate knew of Lindsay through Bowie, so not very odd. :)
Franky FourFingers No. I heard that he was a known teacher through the artists and as she was mentored by a Pink Floyd member....
Franky FourFingers RIP Lindsay Kemp
+EricH928 Post war depression.
I just love how she completely loses herself in her performances and becomes a different character.
She's a singular talent. My favorite artist.
Only Kate can get away with a sensual song about the sound of Violins with Hard Rock riffs while having a straight face of the human violins attacking her. Brillant!!!!
Bush has a terrific sense of humour. I love Kite.
The note in 03:02 is fucking amazing! KATE BUSH is the greatest legendary singer !
She hit even better notes on this song if you listen to Kate Bush - Live at Hammersmith Odeon 79
This outfit is maybe my favorite of hers! Bat Bush! I love this performance, she's always so crazy on stage but so sweet and reserved in interviews and it's so fascinating. Also that intro is so dreamy, I could watch it all day.
I love the images on Never for Ever album cover- all the creatures coming out from under her dress.
I really wished she'd gotten *heavy* _much more often...._ - her approach to that chorus is worth the admission price on its own and signals what she could have been capable of... Spine-melting.
omg she's crazy, I love her
Crazy are the ones that spit on you in the street for no reason. Talented, uninhibited, spirited, and unconformist I would agree.
@@chainmatrix i am sure he meant, crazy in beautiful, artistic way.
Haha..... she's absofuckinglutely Awesome ❤️
Me too truly mad truly brilliant
Plssss 😂😂😂 is this from that meme of the lady with a bag in her head
Just imagine being able to tell your grandkids 'I wasone of them jumping violins'.
OH MY GOD KATE IS SO AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes i am Brasil Kate Bush is wonderfoul
wow wow wow
Strangely, an acquaintance posting a link to this video was my introduction to Kate Bush.
I thought it was some kind of joke: one of those cringe-inducing relics of pop culture excess the internet loves so much. Something about her intrigued me, though--was it her playful and utter shamelessness?--and drew me in. My memories of discovering her music are literally some of my most cherished.
Ten albums and not even a decade later, I feel like I've known her music all my life. Kate Bush: salute!
Who on this planet can be compared to Kate Bush? She is alone in her realm of music- just as dear David Bowie was. In my personal opinion, they stand alone in their creativity and profound talent.
You are right sir in everything you say.
What is more... her track 'Violin' (I believe from her album ' Never For Ever' is one of the rockiest tracks EVER performed by a British female artist.
The rock guitar instrumentation and the dynamics of her voice on this track are testaments to that fact.
On the album, when she reached the crescendo of loudness on the track, you can actually hear her voice breaking through her own vocal voice register.
That was how passionate Kate Bush was on this track.
On this track ( I believe more than ANYTHING) SHE HAS EVER RECORDED, She really played the Men performing in British rock music, at their own game.
david byrne, prince, jane siberry, lots of talented folks :)
Mylene Farmer
Although she doesn't quite reach Kate's level
Nina Hagan comes pretty close.
Bjork is pretty mental, but still not quite in Kate's league.
Nothing on the planet will ever replace Kate ..part goddess part insanity demon angel sheer fookin GENIUS
She's unhinged, I love her so much
She's a genius.
She Rocked harder than Benatar on this track. The range and potential of that voice boggles the metal head mind. Horns Up!
Love that scream!!!
Kate is one of the few artists that can produce a pure 1 kHz note which would set off whistling keyrings (a device to help people find lost keys !)
My God she is just amazing.
It was kinda funny when those two violins came on
The version of this on Kate's Live At The Hammersmith Odeon dvd featues a FANTASTIC guitar solo by the late Alan Murphy. Absolute CLASS.
love her crazy dancing

Truely one of the greatest performances from one of the most incredible artists that has every lived.
She is such a performance artist, I love her.
What an incredible performance...they don't make 'em like that anymore
She is one in a trillion! A sorceress of musical uniqueness.
That outfit must’ve been so fun to wear
I ended up in hospital after watching this a a kid, though that is down to my dad telling me and not my memory as I was a very young child at the time. I was born with a renal defect and so if I need to go the loo I have to do so or there are repercussions so much so my asking in school classes for permission to go was only out of politeness and if the teacher said no I just got up and went anyway. THe very few teachers who said no were told by the headmasters to just say yes and their punishments were revoked by the headmasters. .
I could not do so as I was captivated as a 5 year old, and so it ended up with me in hospital. All I can say is it was worth it. :-)
Kate is remarkable considering how demure she is ❤
It's brilliant how I've been listening to Kate Bush for nearly 40 years and I still seem to have a different favourite song every month. Right now it's Violin. I suppose it's because all her songs are so different and unique and I like this one coz it rocks and she gets really crazy in it.
This special is my happy place ♥️
A big Roxy Music inspiration here for sure. Kate is an amazing, creative and often misunderstood artist. I could listen to and watch her forever!
Me too ,love her !!!
My gf HATES this song. I tried to explain that art in its purest form is supposed to challenge our perspective on this song but she can't get past Kate's vocals. Too bad. She doesn't realize that the vocals are supposed to simulating a real violin.
aren't the vocals also might to represent the eccentric and borderline madness of famous violinists throughout history
@@rolinti9146 For example? I have no frame of reference of any violinists with eccentric or erratic behavior, though from Kate Bush that would not be a surprise. What violinists suffered from mental illness?
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.
I love you kate, whatever you do
Only Kate Bush could write a song called VIOLIN, on PIANO, recorded it with only screeching rock GUITARS and have dancing UPRIGHT BASES/CELLOS in her music video
Actually in the studio version there's violin
Kate Bush is a beautiful woman who has incredible voice
Violin huh? This song doesn’t sound like it’s gonna- OH MY! Heck yes this is what I’m talking about!
1:47 she just froze at that point and kept doing it, maybe paying a tribute to the creature from the black lagoon when he stopped when he was in trouble trying to kidnap the girl. Cool touch
2:24 That's now gonna be my way of hyping up a guitar solo. Kate is giving me so many ideas
One of her best songs! Respect! 💕
That is pure, unadulterated brilliance.
She is so fucking amazing¡¡¡ The BESTTTT¡¡
The woman is so outrageous!!! LOVE her!!
Allan Murphy: *Randomly drops the most tasty, jazz fusion solo on a deep cut kate bush song.
amazing how she sounded like a violin in this one :) So talented.
She's so deliciously mad but I love her.
Iconic
KB at her most eccentric. Reminds of Nina Hagen.
This song definitely depicts the atrocity of my violin playing :) .... I love you, kate bush! x
I am going to join you all in admiration of Kate. I have always loved her since I was a child and the more music of hers I listen to the more I realise what a legendary genius she is. ❤
A) I need that dress. I'm a man but I need that dress.
B) Absentmindedly playing this while browsing internet, look back at 2:12 and choked on my drink
A) Break out the needle and thread it looks easy enough to sew. :-D
B) Take it a s lesson not to drink when watching vids on YT, I have replaced more than my fair share of keyboards that way. Whatever happened to those keyboard condoms you used to be able to get? Add to that it is K8T so nothing should come as suprise:-)
Wow I know I've never seen that before because that was absolutely unforgettable!!!
I love playing the violin when I'm depressed as it helps to keep my chin up
Haha 😂😂😂 like ya style
Goddess
She's the best 😍
Impecável em tudo o que se propõe a fazer.
LOL! ^^ this is one of my favourite Kate songs! but the choreography made it that more brilliant xD
Totally bonkers and wonderful! :-D
LMAO!
Watching this I kinda understand why John Peel could never take her seriously but... he got it wrong.
She fuckin' rocks, lol.
In this music i see nina hagen
Her voice really sounds like a shrieking violin here ... some heavy metal screaming violin there ..
Love Kate Bush. Iconic rock Goddess! Although I'm kinda glad this was all done back in the 70s before social media. I would hate to think how cruel people would be over such a wild and eccentric performance even though I think it's amazing! We'll never have a time quite like it - Love from 2024
Omg massive flash back to when I was 14, the exciting sickening Christmas, Kate Bush ,too much chocolate all rolled into 1 ,thank you so much for the memories x❤
