    the D-50 came along when synths were all sounding so very much the same. the DX7 was another such synth and they both made a huge impact on pop music and soundtracks. but the D-50 made the DX7 sound like a nagging wife. and programming a D-50 had a predictable logic to it. programming a DX7 was like Roulette. you just spin the dial and hope something comes out of it.
    HANDS DOWN the D-50 is the most unique synth to this day. its like putting COLD ICE CREAM on a warm Cake. i have said it before but it just sounded like Christmas to me.

      +LesFarrington I have a DX7 and a D-550 the rack mounted version of the D-50 and yes they aren't in the same league but both are great in its own right.

      I'm more of a DX7 fan, I own the DX7II and its a big improvement over the first model which I don't recommend, the Bigger LCD screen made it easier to program, Unison and Performance Mode gave it some extra Dimensions and the audio had been cleaned up significantly, and coupled with grey matter E you get the Ultimate FM synth.
      However the D50 is a gorgeous sounding machine too, I would love to get one someday, gotta love those "'Breathy" sounds.

    Yes, and easily the best. Like I've already said, I own 2 D50s, I also have a Juno 6, JX10 - a synth that even those that hate it acknowledge the quality of its string sounds - a Polysix, AN1x and quite a few others and still Warm Pad Fades is or I should say my go to string sound. Unfortunately, the battery recently died and I don't know how to reinstall the factory presets. Despite my love of synths I have a fear of other computers. I might be thick but know a beautiful sound when I hear it !

    Nah thats not true. You can make it do pretty cool lead sounds. Cool electro base sounds to. I mean lush and atmospheric pads and sounds is what it does best. Its a great synth with lots of posibillities. Great with 8 note poly to! It does not sound wery analog, but it sounds like a D-50:P its a reason why its so well known in the synthesizer history!

    Thoses sounds were in the first D50 i bought from a guy from Poland, they are really amazing and not found anywhere else, When i sold my D50 i was not clever enough to back up the sounds,and now i bought it over again and my friend whom i sold it to still have it so he sent me the back up of thoses and i have them again :),But i won't ever part with this D50,it's one the most fantastic Roland Synth even today !

    D50's direct competitor in 80's such as Yamaha DX7 and Korg M1 can be found fairly easily still but this D50 has become some kind of rare item.I haven't spotted one for sale at the stores for years.Its capable of making all these beautiful cosmic sounds so anybody who's got one should keep it and look after it well regardless of wether its valuable or not.Great visual of synth that I missed seeing.

    @audioproducer88 im not sure if you are serious or not. Thats a pretty good demo. Its the next one that is going to cause a stir. That demo shows sounds like the bells and bass that people know a DX7 can do. The next one has the DX7 sounding very close to a Roland TR808 plus a bass patch fatter than the weather girls. And other sounds that will make alot of people realize FM synthesis was never fully uncovered even by the pro programmers.

  • @fender1000100
    @fender1000100 12 років тому +1

    @audioproducer to the superficial musicians maybe. To those in the know never. The Mark 2 DX7 has more power and shine. Check my demos out throught the year and this will become apparent. Starting with DX7 changes into a Roland TR808 coming in the next 10 days. I have totally mastered FM synthesis and uncovered its true power. Forget what you think you know about the DX7. I am about to surprise alot of people.

    I'm still waiting for sci-fi movies (hell, ANY movie) to make a harrowing comeback with soundtracks distinctly forged by Roland D-50's, Yamaha DX7's and Alesis A6's.
    Has Vangelis done ANYTHING like this lately??

    Just so everyone is aware, it is alleged that most of these presets came from the Bobby Blues website banks, and are presets from random/multiple banks. They were put onto this D50 by some Polish dude and then this D50 was purchased by the guy who uploaded this vid. Sorry, i hate it when everyone comes somewhere with a question and no one is answering it.

    I remember when this synth came out around 87? What a great machine! Pair it up with an MT-32 and you've got a nice ensemble! Even without programming new patches... the factory patches were just great! I think this synth should be up there with the other "immortal" synths... the prophet 5, the mini moog, the arp omni.

    I just found a D50 for 100€ w/case at a junk shop minutes ago and secured it with a 5€ deposit as I don't have the other 95 right now. I knew I was going to find something great for dirt cheap, but I wanted to search for demos on the 'Tube to hear what it can really do...and I stumbled upon your video! WOW! GREAT TONES! Are these all factory presets or can I download them somewhere?

  • @SynthMan65
    @SynthMan65 17 років тому +1

    One of my favorite all time synths!!
    I've had the D-550 (the rack version) and the PG-3000 programmer since 1988 and I still have and love that synth to this day. No other synth in the world came with as many usable factory presets as the D-50 did. I just wish the filters would self-oscillate -- whcih is a Roland thing until the JP-8000.
    It is wonderful synth to program compared to say a lame DX-7 (even with the Grey Matter E upgrade which fattens it up).

    had a DX7 Mk2, D-50 (twice), SY77 and various other FM and digital synths and the D-50 stands out as unique, warm and beautiful. My SY77 is a powerhouse doing things D-50 can't but it doesn't have that 'sound', DX/FM is a different thing to D-50 so futile to compare. D-50 is one of a kind in NON PCM mode. Magical. DX is just another flavour of FM which I do love but not as much as D-50. And if going for FM = SY77!!! Way better than DX7/II

  • @clavdig

    I have decided to keep both the D50 and D70. Just cleaned the rubber membrane under the keys of the D-50 as one note was off and another two were transmitting max velocity. Works fine now. The D70 is a bitch to get into, had some buttons smashed and to replace them we had to go right through the boards from the bottom to get to the top of the keyboard!

  • @oS2006DE

    Depends on what circle your're in. These huge ambient sounds seem to fall out of it almost, but this is a drawback if you're with a band and you JUST need a frikkin organ or piano sound. Otherwise, it's an awesome sounding board.

    Hi, nice sounds. I have just been given a D50,D70 and Wavestation, I think I will sell the Wavestation but was wondering about the D50,D70. I think I should keep the D50 as I read that the D-70 is more sample playback, what do you think?

    Bro - all you knead is a Roland D50 and a laptop. All the patches run ported back to a D50 in its original language. I know what you mean though, I have 3 D50's and using/storing them can be a hindrance.

  • @Retfie719
    @Retfie719 15 років тому

    I think you've got some SYSEX file. So play back them on the D-50, with a MIDI cable connected. Maybe you must enter some editing mode etc., the d-50 tech manual is available in PDF on the roland website.

    Good point - The small window is a nightmare to navigate at best of times. Its like the menu system alone has its own way of doing things before you've even selected what you want to do. I would like to install a Valve based output stage and see what magic it can create :)

  • @fender1000100
    @fender1000100 12 років тому

    The Roland D50 has beautiful sounds. But it lacks the power and guts of a DX7 MK2 or Roland JX8P. But then nothing touches the DX bass anyway.

  • @realityfakers
    @realityfakers 12 років тому

    Actually only the D-50 and possibly the DX7 are 'to kill for'. The two korgs are terrible by today's standards (almost non synths especially the pre-canned M1 ugh) - the software versions of those two ARE better in this case (cos they actually have a decent filter unlike the hardware). Have no need/use for the sterile M1/Wavestation in 2012. D-50 however remains enigmatic and alive!

  • @HotBlastCarver
    @HotBlastCarver 13 років тому

    Well if you can fetch almost €4000 for a JP-8 somebody strapped for cash might decide to sell it. Especially if you can have a lot of good sounding synths for that amount of money plus some pocketchange. Also somebody mentioned a DX-7 being difficult to program. This is a misconception, you can get very simple analog style sound using just two operators. The problem for most people is they don't understand the underlying synthesis principle so they don't know where to start.

  • @TomZentra
    @TomZentra 13 років тому

    @thelurker25 Your explanation is a nonsensical explanation. There have been NO low cost JP-8 synths to be found for years. Their price reached a barrier over a year ago. If you think that you can buy a a JP-8 and sell it for a few thousand dollars profit, you're living in the past. Check eBay sales. The prices are NOT going any higher and JP-8's stay listed for weeks or months until they are sold - often with a compromised price.

  • @rars0n
    @rars0n 15 років тому

    The Roland D-series synths are certainly NOT the type of synths that you just pick up and buy. Programming the synth is not at all user-friendly and the manual is such a poor translation that it's no help. If you don't know what you're doing with this synth, you won't be able to do much more than bang away on the presets, most of which suck.
    I mean, you could have spent that $250 on a used Micron or some other synth that sounds awesome and is easy to use right out of the box.

  • @RyouRan

    I have almost 4000 different patches for the D-50 but don't have this one. :( I really hope alphacode909 is willing to share his patches as a SysEx file because they're very good and I don't have them as far as my ears and memory can tell. (I don't have my D-50 with me right now) You could try to program a similar patch, I know I will. :) The D-50 is an amazing machine.

  • @realityfakers
    @realityfakers 14 років тому

    @stalag3333 It's all digital, no analog filter. Roland just did a great job of making it sound very warm, and the way it makes sounds (in structure mode 1 or 2 pure synth no PCM) is akin to virtual analog anyway. That's why D-50 sounds so alive for digital! One of the best synths ever made. I have one in near mint condition.

  • @MrModulator
    @MrModulator 17 років тому

    That would be some Oberheim then. It is famous for it's big brass-sounds used by a lot of 80;s metalbands. Van Halens Jump for instance was made on an oberheim. JX8p uses digital waveforms so a true analog (VCO) would walk all over it when it comes to drifiting oscillators (which makes the lively warm sounds).

  • @TomZentra
    @TomZentra 13 років тому

    @thelurker25 That's exactly what I was thinking. But the same applies to any synth. Consider the Jupiter 8 too. If it's the ultimate analog, then why is it resold so many times? Because eventually most keyboardists become tired of the same old sounds.

  • @Parsec994a
    @Parsec994a 15 років тому

    These sounds are futuristic and nothing since has sounded as complex. Newer stuff just doesn't have the sparkle.
    Maybe because a lot of the CDROM Computer games I played in the mid 90s had soundtracks in which this synth was used.

    Such amazing sounds! Almost takes you into a different world. The thing about it, unlike conventional accoustic instruments, with a synthesizer you can create the sound of anything. It's all about exploring the different frequencies, sound and tones to create your own. A bit like mixing your own paints to make your own picture perhaps. Love it!
