I live in Manitoba. We used to have massive pike in some spots in the southern basin of lake Winnipeg, especially in the 70’s. We used red devil spoons, and brought in some whoppers. They were so big in one area, we used to avoid it.
Good luck Greg. I just got back from Manitoba and as an update, they were hitting on Bright orange and silver and blue spoons. Not much luck with the Rapala lures this time around.
@@KurtHBenner Sweet! And Musky like them too. I caught my PB llargemouth bass on a size 130 plopper a weekend ago, 5-5.5 lbs! I'm in Minnesota, so this is huge for bass up here
This was such a badass video I’m a master angler out here in the state of New Mexico and we have pike in seldom lakes and trust me when I say this list is to die for. Right on man!
I'm just getting back into fishing. I used to fish exclusively for pike (the bass up in NY don't get big). I recall 3 lures were pretty much mainstays for me: Spoons (Daredevil or knockoff versions), Spinnerbaits (not the Inline type) and the Rapala Husky Jerk. The Husky Jerk was so deadly. They couldn't resist. We used to put Suspend Dots on the lure, testing it in an aquarium to make sure it suspended perfectly. We'd replace the treble hooks with the Gamakatsu brand treble. Good times.
Sounds like you haven't missed a beat! Good luck this season. With Canada closed up currently, I'm heading to Minnesota in a couple of weeks for Walleye and Smallies. Hopefully will be up in Saskatchewan for Pike in August if the border reopens.
What are some good areas in CNY for pike, I just got into it recently. I know that there not many in CNY but I know a few but not more than two or three areas.
Very good and pracrical selection of lures and bits. These really are the best options that would guarantee you a pike if there are any. Like many, i was thinking that buying extravagant and expensive and big variety of lures will bring me more success but it ain't the case. Thanks for the video! Greetings from Bulgaria!
do they have pike in bulgaria. try a 3/4 ounce little cleo. where do you get your fishing supplies there. what else do you fish for. message is from michigan u.s.a.
Yes I agree with everyone of your picks, another honorable mention that works for me as a last ditch to get some fish in is a 5" zoom fluke. One of the best colors for me, I know it sounds funny because nothing in nature is this color, bubble gum pink. I even pulled big walleyes off Devils Lake with those while pike fishing.
well, i don't think we're entirely sure as to what fish actually see, so a lot of lures in strange colors may look quite different to their eyes. add the refraction off the water and it gets even more complicated. i have really good luck on purple heavy flake and bright chartreuse worms, and that's another one that has no natural analogue.
Every northern I've ever caught were on overhead spinnerbaits. Had a darker green one I landed so many on that the skirt was basically a few threads left. They still would go for it. I miss that lure lol
Mepps is good but my #1 pike lure is a Charteruse Spinner Bait tipped with a tail "something wiggly". You can go to any lake and nail them with this lure and cost under $10.00 dollars. Id have two or three in the tackle box. Try Devils Lake or Lake Sakakawea monster pikes there and no Passport needed. I also custom paint blank jerk baits specifically for the lake I fish. I'm a Master Baiter .
Thanks for the great video, it helped me figure out a few things to take on a coming up pike trip. How do you rig an X-Rap for pike? Thanks for your help.
+Bill Jackson - Same as I would any other pike lure. I use 14lb mono to a 12in wire leader (I use titanium - less kinks). I buy the leaders that use the cross-lok snap as I feel it is stronger and I want to be quick to change lures if I need to. I attach the lure right to the snap. Good luck on your trip - heading up to Northern Manitoba myself in about 6 weeks. Looks like an early ice-out so depending on when you go the Pike may already be heading to some slightly deeper water if the cabbage starts to spring up early.
My most productive lure by far has been the storm 6" Wild-eye Live Pike. I've tried other swim baits with much less success, but the biggest pike I've hooked (a really big one lost at boat side) was with a micro-dawg. The storm pike casts like a rocket and is idiot proof (which helps in my case). For some reason, I have not had success with the Dardevle spoons or other spoons. The only spoon I've had success with is the 1oz Mepps Syclops spoon and I tend to catch more bass than pike; although I do catch pike with it. I think that my spoon technique maybe of a bit off for pike. Next trip I will experiment with letting the Dardevle spoons fall to the bottom and near bottom more and jerking/cranking it up and letting it fall more erratically. I've also had times when the pike are hitting spinners so much that there doesn't seem to be any reason to switch up to another bait. I've had some success with jerk baits, but for me the swim baits are so much easier to cast and fish that jerk baits and crank baits are at the end of the queue for me. They are just too much work; although, I will try them a little just to mix it up a little for fun.
i have fished for pike for 60 years. i look for 10 to 12 foot of water with weeds about half way down. i love pike fishing in canada. if you want bigger pike look for deeper water with a weedy bottom and drop a smelt down.
Hey, listen..... I really appreciate your telling the sizes of those baits. I live way out in the country and I only get to a large city about 3-4 times a year. So, I order a lot of stuff through the mail. Its hard for me to tell the sizes of things. Your telling me its a #5 or whatever takes the guess work out of it. THANK YOU!!
I 100% cast. But we have a few guys that troll with spoons. They don’t get the quantity of fish as the guys that cast but they get their fair share of big pike as well as some decent Lake Trout.
Excellent video, I've caught with most all of these baits, but never used a swim bait before. I look forward to trying to suspending perch later this summer!
My top 3 would be spoons, spinner baits, and F18 size Rapala's. For spoons I like 3/4 oz Len Thompsons in orange and yellow patterns, and 3/4 Williams spoons in gold and silver. I switch out the trebles for singles, and often add various plastic trailers to change the running speed/ depth, or even get them to plane on top. IMO nothing can touch spoons for versatility, durrability, and consistency but spinnerbaits are pretty close.
What size ounce should the daredevil and 5 of diamond spoons be for pike? I didn’t understand what 2 meant. I am a new angler and it would mean a lot if you helped me. Thanks!
@@familyguyostrich7463 re: your question on copper or nickel backs - I've never seen a huge difference in my catch count copper vs nickel - I've had guides in Canada that prefer the copper but on the other side you have a greater selection of spoons with a nickel back. Pretty close to my results, especially at the top. Lately my top lures have been the bigger and chunkier Rapala X-Rap Jointed Shad and Husky Jerk, but I've also done great on the 12cm X-Raps. Swimbaits are also effective, and can be worked through cover if rigged properly, which can be huge casting right along reeds.
Never been to Manitoba to fish but living in Ontario we have some good spots. Topwater sounds exciting for Pike. Got most of my recent success with paddletails on a jig and the five of diamonts has been great too. Nice video bro.
The silver minnow will do well in early or late season Pike fishing and will perform much better than the dressed #5 spinner in the late season as the silver minnow is weedless and will get through the cabbage with ease. Here's a tip: add a white twister tail to the silver minnow. It makes the lure even more appealing to a hungry Pike.
I can not believe the success I have had this summer in Northwestern Wisconsin throwing a 3 Foot depth Squarebill. The Pike just hammer them. The brand does not matter, dirt cheap or high dollar. They smack them all. I have actually had monster open the split rings and loose the fish. All of a sudden My lure comes flying back at me with no hooks. Crazy year. I have fishes this lake every weekend in open water season for 14 years and the have never hit this hard. I cast in the Whitest Squarebill I can find. Bass like it too but I have to use a wire leader to hang onto the lure.
Hey Kurt guess what now! The Rapala X rap jerk bait you showed us, I caught a pike with it the other day! I used a gold color! And plus I have a perch color like the one you have!
I live in the north east and I do a lot of bass fishing with similar lures,is there a way to tell if pike are in a certain body of water? Aside from asking around and actually pulling one out is there anyway to know where to go pike fishing?
Thanks for the question. Pike are hunting voracious eaters. You'll know quickly if they are in a lake. That said, they prefer cool water that will produce a lot of vegetation in the summer. Usually pike will head to shallow areas of a lake after ice-out to warm themselves but head to deeper colder water in late June as the vegetation grows and wait in the weeds to catch prey. I would also search pike lakes in your area on google and see if that will guide you. Good Luck!
Never caught anything with a red and white Daredevil , if Im musky or pike fishing I find a simple silver spoon works well and some deep diver rapalas double jointed
I don't know about the bronze, but I've had some phenomenal luck with the brass (and hammered copper) Eppinger Red Eye Wiggler spoon. Similar color in my opinion but a slightly different flash. Thanks for the comment Kevin.
Hello. When you refer to #'s for the Daredevele's, I cannot cross reference those numbers anywhere. They are only listed by weights. I bought a fishing collection consisting of many spoons (Daredevele's)... new in the package.. 2/5oz (8 of them), 3/4oz (12 of them) and 1oz (2 of them). I usually focus on walleye and panfish for eating and bass for sport. I never used the spoons because I rarely do Pike fishing (Intentionally). A friend of mine bought a house on a lake with a decent Pike population, so I'm trying to figure out what weight/ size to use. It's southern Wisconsin, so the pike probably wont be much larger than 36" if we're lucky. That's my guess anyway... Haven't spoke to any other fishermen on the lake yet. What size would you start with... by weight? I'm guessing the 3/4oz.. I cant figure what I'd ever use the 2/5 oz ones for. Thanks!
Sorry for the late reply - 1oz for Pike works best for me in Canada. I think you're ok with that - I've seen really small pike hit the big spoons. Good luck!
Couldn't agree more. If you can't find them, then it's an exercise in futility. Once you locate them then you do need to find which lure will work best. I've had them devour soft plastics one day and the following day they wouldn't even look at them.
Define deep... Northern Pike go deep looking for cooler water in the summer. But they also look for cabbage (weeds) to hide in waiting for bait fish to swim by, so open water may be more difficult to catch them. I don't think I've ever gone deeper than 25ft however I've heard of pike as deep as 40-50ft deep. As far as lures, I'd use big spoons that will drop quickly to the depth you want. Kastmasters or 5 of Diamonds would be my first choice. If you have weeds then use the Johnson silver minnow (weedless) - size would be in the 1 1/2oz. If you are looking for Lake Trout then same lures but bigger. Good Luck!!
Northern pike that really bright five of diamonds that you can get every time a fish will hit it I've been fishing Northern Pike in Alberta for quite a while never had a problem with the five of diamonds
I live in Northern Manitoba, 5 of diamonds hits big pike. We caught 60 pike in 3 hours lol spent more time taking the lures out of the fish/releasing than casting lol
i always wanted to fish in manitoba. i have fished in northern ontario for 36 years. my girlfriend and i also caught 63 pike in 3.5 hours. i had to take all the hooks out so after that i said enough for today.
one time I was using a spinner bait in the fox river in Illinois and I was looking for bass and one fish strikes the first time and it made a huge splash in the water! Then the second time it bite again! but the fish broke off my spinner bait.
I live by the bay of quinte in trenton ,ontario,, been trying to find some pike from shore ,,every video on UA-cam says use the daredevle or five of diamonds ,,,they don't work never did here ,,,every person that catches pike usually around here are never catching them on the lures you suggested ,,makes it kind of confusing when everyone says try spoons to catch pike ,,,we have tons here ,,everyone I know says they have never caught a pike in years off those two spoons.
Kurt H Benner great advice ya,,,I have friends that catch all their pike on spinnerbaits ,,,me I always seem to catch them on jerk baits,,,or plastic senkos believe it or not ,,,,I live in Frankford the bite is tough up here mostly
I have lived in the Quinte area all of my life and I have caught more pike on a red daredevil than anything else, with a gold/silver Williams Wobbler a close second.
I used to swear by steel leaders but as of this past summer I switched to a kastking 80lb mono leader. Makes inter species fishing much easier and I did much better for Pike and trout since I switched to mono
Rüstem Ön Here are a few of them, Rapala X-Rap, Storm suspending wild eye swim shad, Mepps Double Aglia spinners, Eppinger daredevile Spoons, Heddon Zara Spook. Good luck!
The #5 Mepps with a bucktail is great. Mepps came out with a new spinner this season. Called the Bronze Slammer, it’s very similar to the Aglia but with a slightly longer bucktail. It worked for me this summer!
Nice video however you will need a lot of those to go fishing in Wisconsin for Northern pike since they are always in very weeded areas, so snagging will become a major factor here, I would put my #1 lure as a frog that has the hook protector over it for Wisconsin Pike fishing!
Milla Whatever •Well, for fishing like in heavy cover it may be the number one lure, but even in Wisconsin I'd feel better off using a jerk bait adjacent to weedline to draw northerns out of the vegetation, more hookups
Box standard lures not a patch on my home made lures and spinner baits.. Put it this way when I leave my home to go on holiday my lures get locked in a safe. A true master angler uses lures evolved over generations not 5 lures bought in any sports outlet or found in any old tackle box. The 5 best lures you could ever use are those created through experience..
The wife and I have caught pike on the jighead curly tail combo as well. We were catching crappie bass and perch blue gillon the same setup. Were newer to fishing and we're surprised when the pike hit it. Smaller pikes but still lots of fun.
I was hoping to learn here lol storms are garbage, frogs are for weeds... rappala dare devils and poppers are in everyone's tackle box, those storm lures are garbage lol. Only sure way was the mepps with buck tail absolutely the best sure fire way to land pike.
thanks for the tips! I use heddons for topwater and daredevils and Mepps mostly for pike, also collect them, couple on my page if interested! new sub here, good luck out there!

Hello. When you refer to #'s for the Daredevele's, I cannot cross reference those numbers anywhere. They are only listed by weights. Thanks!

The five of diamonds lands more pike than anything else I have ever used. Out performs by a minimum of 3:1. Absolutely bizarre.
Yeah, it's weird. I've had years where that's all the Pike were hitting then other years when they wouldn't even touch it. Thanks for your comment.

I tie my mono line to a wire leader and use a Palomar knot. The wire leader has a cross-lok snap that I attach to the lure. Thanks.
With pike I think locating the fish is priority #1, and lures a distant second

What are the best lures for open deep water
Good Luck!!
Thank you i am getting a 5 of diamonds and right now i have a normal daredevil and a firetiger
Northern pike that really bright five of diamonds that you can get every time a fish will hit it I've been fishing Northern Pike in Alberta for quite a while never had a problem with the five of diamonds
Bradley Lynch can’t go wrong with it. It’s always a go to for me when my hogs and crankbaits aren’t doing the job.
Great video, really informative.
Great spoons are also: Bete Crocodile and Kuusamo Professor
do you jig the spoons or cast and retrieve them?
Hi Logan, cast and retrieve - thanks
Thank you
are there any good trophy pike waters in Southern Alberta?
I don't really know as I have never fished that region.
Kurt H Benner how about Ontario?
FishNFoolLures where about in southern Alberta? Sylvan Lake has some monster pike upwards of 40"+
FishNFoolLures keyho in Lethbridge
Could u put all the names in the description
I live in Northern Manitoba, 5 of diamonds hits big pike. We caught 60 pike in 3 hours lol spent more time taking the lures out of the fish/releasing than casting lol
i always wanted to fish in manitoba. i have fished in northern ontario for 36 years. my girlfriend and i also caught 63 pike in 3.5 hours. i had to take all the hooks out so after that i said enough for today.
Spinnerbaits are also a very good choice.
Thank you Sir I'll be putting these tips to good use here in Sask
one time I was using a spinner bait in the fox river in Illinois and I was looking for bass and one fish strikes the first time and it made a huge splash in the water! Then the second time it bite again! but the fish broke off my spinner bait.
My problem with frogs are the pike can never seem to bite it enough to eat it or they choke it I love poppers a lot more
I actually agree with you.
Great. We have a very similar top for northern pike in Russia
Great video, Kurt.
I had a big hit on a baby bass torpedo but lost what ever it was while bass fishing
Thank you for the very informative video!!!
Oh and make sure to bring warm clothes as im sure you know its still pretty chilly up there at that time of year
Do I put a stellar leader?
HI Greg. Do you mean steel leader? That answer is yes. You will need a steel or titanium leader when fishing for Pike.
Thank you I honestly just used any large flat hook like that
I took your advice and we slaughtered the pike in Northern Minnesota. Cheers
That's awesome! Thanks for the shoutout!
Omega sea master? Looks like the James Bond edition.
I have more luck with the 5 of diamonds. but if it doesn't work for you try casting some spinners or jerk baits. Good luck!
Kurt H Benner great advice ya,,,I have friends that catch all their pike on spinnerbaits ,,,me I always seem to catch them on jerk baits,,,or plastic senkos believe it or not ,,,,I live in Frankford the bite is tough up here mostly
Use a blue fox spinner 1/4 ounce if there's pike they'll hit it
Ty Scott only lure mentioned here that sure to catch pike are the maps spinners with buck tails. Those storm are trash
I have lived in the Quinte area all of my life and I have caught more pike on a red daredevil than anything else, with a gold/silver Williams Wobbler a close second.
Smallmouth love the 5 of diamonds as well.
I caught a 3lb channel catfish off one
From my experience everything loves a 5 of diamonds, you just need to adjust the size to the target. Casting spoons aremy favourite lure.
If I had to have only 1 lure, it would be a Len Thompson 5 of diamonds
do you use wire leaders
absolutely mandatory if your are fishing for Pike. Their teeth are so sharp they would cut through anything other than a high quality wire leader.
Kurt H Benner thanks. I normally go after small mouth but might give pike a go this year
I used to swear by steel leaders but as of this past summer I switched to a kastking 80lb mono leader. Makes inter species fishing much easier and I did much better for Pike and trout since I switched to mono
Kurt H Benner they dont bite threw 100lb fluro carbon believe it or not
In Canada we consider Len Thompson the original and the imitations the knockoffs.
can u write the lure model names all
Rüstem Ön Here are a few of them, Rapala X-Rap, Storm suspending wild eye swim shad, Mepps Double Aglia spinners, Eppinger daredevile Spoons, Heddon Zara Spook. Good luck!
Saskatchewan is your best choices for fishin Canada trust me
Yes! Fished there many times. Scott Lake, Wollaston, Reindeer, Misaw to name a few. Heading back to Reindeer Lake this August if the border is open.
Awesome lures.
Mepps #4 bucktail
Spinner bait or great to
Thanks for sharing!
Dam,mepps, and voblers Kum,Idra! Best pike lures,if you have little time you tipe on you tube for dis lure! Tnx for video!!!
Spoons rule, especially the yellow with red diamonds
I slay pike with crappie jigs, fast small jerks, slow retrieve.
I had a cleo for years. Always tried it. Never one fish.
Well said, however Northern Pike destroy lures on a regular basis. But I wish you great success with your homemade lures.
1/4 oz jigheads and a curly tail grub
That's the set up I use for Walleye - works great
The wife and I have caught pike on the jighead curly tail combo as well. We were catching crappie bass and perch blue gillon the same setup. Were newer to fishing and we're surprised when the pike hit it. Smaller pikes but still lots of fun.
You are best thanks 🙂
I caught a pike today with the same spoon as the one on the left in the thumbnail.
North American piking is so different to European piking - its interesting
Ouais c’est vraiment différent
tremendous video
I was hoping to learn here lol storms are garbage, frogs are for weeds... rappala dare devils and poppers are in everyone's tackle box, those storm lures are garbage lol. Only sure way was the mepps with buck tail absolutely the best sure fire way to land pike.
its awesome lures...but in my country i cant buy it....damn....
I live in norther Qebec and I have the dar devil
My lake is called Mistissini lake
Strike king. Midnight catch non-stop. Northerns
Thanks uncle
thanks for the tips! I use heddons for topwater and daredevils and Mepps mostly for pike, also collect them, couple on my page if interested! new sub here, good luck out there!
He's a master baiter.
Yeah…that’s original. That’s what we name our rookies who haven’t landed a trophy.
Well im a master backlasher!
Haha! We've all had that problem!!
