I saw Petula Clark perform several years ago - she was 86 at the time. What an amazing performance it was. She is a treasure.

There is such joy and optimism in Petula’s voice. She just makes you happy. There was something in the water in London, I guess.

John B Yes, I also loved those longer dresses; a 'shift', as Axle Grind told us, and the other dresses that women wore ( not all, but most). And to watch Petula wiggle in that 'shift'....wow...sexy..!!

Petula was a charmer. Mid '60s pop is so upbeat. Petula. Dusty Springfield. Dione Warwick. Burt Bacharach. Mamas Papas. 5th Dimension. Supremes. Beatles. Beach Boys. Stevie Wonder. So much positive vibe.

I was 14 in 1966 and I remember just how great "Downtown" was, and then this song came along and was just as great as "Downtown". The arrangements sounded so full and rich; even on a little radio. Songs are memory triggers for me and Petula's hits really do that with me. Thank you again, Phil for your wonderful histories of the performers and also explaining the musicality of the songs so well..!!

I like all of Petula's hits, but this is absolutely my favorite. Hit the charts right after my senior year of high school. Summer, 1966; this song always reminds me of warm weather, blue skies and white puffy clouds. Not a lot of songs take me back in time like this one does. The memories come flooding back!

I took some heat from my friends in the sixties for being a Pet Clark fan, (didn't care). Wow, did she have some great songs back then.
The UK has yet another National Treasure with Petula Clark.
As to the UK's national treasures, we never heard Cliff Richard music back in the day. Our radio stations never played him. What a loss for us, but thanks to YT we can re-visit that great British music.

Pet just turned 87, and as Fil mentions, is STILL performing! What a prodigious career....and, however many massive, world-wide hits she's had, Pet is still woefully underappreciated! I said it before, but never underestimate these considerable contributions to her career---the hit songs she had, thanks to the pen of Tony Hatch, and on several occasions, Jackie Trent. Rarely has the magic "marriage" of songwriter and singer yielded such memorable, timeless songs (which brings to mind the Bacharach/David hits with Dionne Warwick).

While for most the Beatles were tops in the mid 60s my personal favorite was Petula Clark. I didn’t realize until recently that she had been a child singing star as you mention. I had 45 s of her singles Don’t Sleep in the Subway and American Boy, vinyl albums My Love and Greatest Hits. Much later got a couple of compilations on CD. In the late 90s met and had my albums and CDs autographed by her when she sang Downtown at the re-dedication of the Downtown Plaza shopping mall in Sacramento, CA. Thanks for sharing her music and story Fil.

I think the music of the 60s was ground-breaking. I don't know what happened . Suddenly the super hyper weirdness wriggled out of its shell . It's incubator. I mean where did psychedelia come from ??? Petula . ? No offence . But she is a bit ...boring?? She was appropriated by the establishment. Same as Julie Andrews. Sexless!!!!!!!!! We are all being manipulated. None of this is organic . YEH , she was great , but why the hell am I so unmoved by her . ?????? I went to see The Sound of Music as a child, and I utterly hated it . I hated the Von Trapp frigging family . I loathed it . I felt sick when I came out of the cinema , and I spat at a girl . Because I wanted to hurt her . I wanted to hurt her because she had been taken in by the repulsive ugly sentiment of that film . She looked so happy. In her stupid flowery dress . I was angry . My little child brain didn't know why . So I spat in her stupid happy face !!! I preferred The Railway Children . Love you Fil ♡♡♡

Petula Clark was the prettiest, classiest Female British rock/pop star (yes rock and roll) there was...And England had lots of them...Cilla, Lulu, Dusty, Julie Driscol, who did I forget?...And she sang so great...I Know A Place-Don't Sleep InThe Subway-Sign Of The Times-My Love-Downtown...In the early to the mid 60s us Americans didn't have as many, but by the mid 60s early 70s...we were catching up..God bless you Petula....frankm63yroldwhitekid....Diana Ross, Ronnie Spector. Leslie Gore, Linda and The Stone Ponys, Michelle Philips, Jackie De Shannon...Maybe I was wrong..Anyway. We slept in the NYC subways a few times and she was right...I should have listened...

I like hearing the backstory of a song being written. Seems that the 60's and 70's had very iconic songs with remarkable stories of why they were written - generally because of the social and political climate of the day. Very interesting to hear about Petula's choice of songs and never knew she was an actress. So thanks for the valuable information.

I miss the 60's when my life was in the single digits and this music was coming across the AM radio.

More than thumbs up! Thank you for such an historically interesting story...her life was just astonishing! Love the fun intertwining with Julie Andrews, 'The Sound of Music' and 'Mary Poppins', both starring film roles for her.

Again, awesome research. I think your videos ( the ones I’ve seen, anyway) are interesting because you celebrate the person as well as their music.

Thank you for sharing. Lovely and very period in look and sound. A bit of it reminds me of American country elements.

    Fil is still #1!!
(Don’t be afraid to use the musical analysis because you do it so well! And it helps to appreciate the artist and the song, which always seems to be your primary aim. Thank you for being and remaining the gracious person you are!

Saw her in Cincinnati, Ohio several year's ago, great show. I have several of her disc, love her music & fashion. I'm 62 now and listened to her music in the 60s & 70s. Great analysis.

I think when you talk about the peak of the chorus is also known as the musical tension. Well that's how I learned it. How music builds tension and then you hit that peak, or crescendo, where the tension explodes and you start to relax again and come down toward the end.
