Love Petula Clark's music! This is another great singer from the 60's British Invasion. She had a string of great songs such as "Don't Sleep In The Subway", "I Know A Place", "My Love", "A Sign Of The Times", "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love", "Who Am I", "Colour My World", "This Is My Song" (by Charles Chaplin), "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener", "Kiss Me Goodbye" etc. Petula Clark also starred alongside Fred Astaire in the musical fantasy film "Finian's Rainbow" in 1968.
Great iconic singer, fantastic lively voice Many very good songs;: DONT SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY, I KNOW A PLACE, I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT YR LOVE, A SIGN OF THE TIMES and more
Back in the early and mid 60s, going downtown was considered a special and exciting event. That's where some of the best stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues were located. We even dressed up for the occasion. Petula Clark was also an actress. She was in a movie with dancer/actor Fred Astaire called "Finnians Rainbow". TCM airs it every St. Patrick's Day.
This song instantly triggers childhood memories (late 60's) of a dark winters night on a bus with the colorful lights of the shops playing on the steamed up windows of the bus.
My first 45 bought for me by my father. “Downtown” was the opening song in one of the episodes of the TV series “Lost”. 🏝📺. Petula Clark is Welsh and starred in the Broadway show, “Blood Brothers” along with half-brother co-stars David and Shawn Cassidy 🎭
I remember when this first came out. It was one of my favorite songs of the year. There was so much great music coming out at that time. Every day brought out a new favorite song of the year. Others of hers worth hearing include Don't Sleep In The Subway, Sign Of tThe Times and I Know A Place.
"Downtown" was huge hit in the US and the UK. This is my favorite era-- the Sixties thru the mid- Seventies. Pet Clark's LP's were among my mother's favorites, so I became a fan through her. Also< Clark is a great actress-- She starred in the movie with Peter O'Toole "Good-bye, Mr. Chips" and with Fred Astaire in "Finian's Rainbow," both musicals.
Petula is 90 and still performing. I saw her in London last November on her 90 birthday. She sounded fantastic!
