It takes a lot of guts to put it out there to the public for all to see. There will always be critics especially in aviation. You are a fine pilot and I appreciate your videos because they show an enthusiasm for flying and a fresh, honest perspective. Keep it up!
Hey Niko. Airline pilot here! For what it is worth I think you did a fantastic job. It is always better to air on the side of caution than to put yourself at greater risk than necessary. I started my initial training in a SR20 when I was in college and those airplanes had over 3000 hours on them when I was there. It was not uncommon for them to have small engine issues like this one. You handled yourself like a professional and you got your family down safely. Keep doing what you are doing. By the looks of it you are a very safe pilot and my hat is off to the CFI(s) who trained you. They did a great job instilling a lot of good habits. All the best, Zach. p.s. if your daughter ever has issues getting her ears to clear try teaching her the valsalva maneuver. That may help a lot on those long trips at high altitude.
Good advice Zach! I had to go to altitude chamber refreshers every 5 years and saw a real value for GA. I have since heard that FAA does them for free in OKC. I bring up the chamber since you advised ValSalvas. Great comment.
Imagine if that fuel injector got fully clogged and the engine dying over the ocean with your family onboard. Wise decision to abort and return and take 0 risk. Good for you it was a quick fix. Enjoy your video's
I'm new to your site. This is a few days after the famous helicopter crash and proof that you did not fall into the trap of GET-THERE-ITIS like so many pilots do, and pay the price. Hats off to you sir!
You’re a fantastic ambassador for general aviation Niko! Thanks for consistently demonstrating what can be accomplished with the proper training, equipment, and PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE. Well done my friend!!!
Well done sir. You noticed something off and decided it was too risky. You handled this situation flawlessly. Great job. Makes me want to get my license.
I'm glad it wasn't something more serious. Good call turning back and addressing the problem rather than getting out over the ocean with an unknown issue!
Just finished watching the first part...well done! When it doesnt seem/feel right be safe rather then sorry. Id feel 100% safe in the air with you anytime
This is my first time watching your channel and I did see the "Emergency" video first when you said "Hit the link below." That was amazing. You kept your cool even with your little girl crying in the background. Poor thing. You're an ACE! Thanks for sharing your experience as it helps us to learn from each other. Look forward to your other vids. I'm subscribing.
Fascinating how an aviator from 80 years ago would find today's cockpit un-intelligible but the engine, and the mechanics that work on them, how little has changed! "Let me just blow that gunk out for you, fella" :) I assume you've probably already gone down this route, but if you haven't, I recommend a Zoom H1 audio recorder, or something like it, keep it in the plane, and then just take the SD card in and out for audio. Or the Zoom Q4 with video AND external mic in (then you can get some video too). Thanks for taking the time to post these videos!
Glad a clogged fuel injector is all that was wrong. Love the "Jerry Springer" reference LOL!!! That's spot on, especially with some of these you tube enthusiasts. Happy trails and blue skies to ya.
Clogged fuel injector , once cleared you ask yourself why the injector was clogged. You could go as far as drain the onboard fuel and filter it and refuel, would recommend changing fuel filter and plugs as a precaution. Taking positive measures to prevent a reoccurrence of the problem is just good sense. If nothing else, it puts your mind at ease. Great video coverage.
What caused the clogged injector? What is the condition of other injectors? Those were my thoughts after hearing the cause of engine problems and I agree with your other suggestions unless someone has figured out a way to pull over an airplane and stop at altitude. Hope everything works out.
Niko's Wings may correct me on this, but I believe the emergency video was published on 19th March 2017, this trace and rectify the cause video was published on 26th March 2017 (and you hear Niko thank the ATC for their amazing work 'the other day' during the emergency), and then the aircraft received a major service and upgrade with that video published on the 20th May 2017 (in that video you hear a conversation about the injectors being replaced) and see much of the aircraft stripped down. I think it's fair to say that if you fly with this guy you are in very safe hands, and whilst he doesn't want anything to go wrong, he goes prepared and doesn't take chances. Thank you for this follow up video outlining the most probable cause.
Congrats on finding the issue and glad it was not something more expensive. Good job on the first video of recognizing a problem and making the right decision to turn back. A 3 hour flight with a clogged injector would have not been good for the engine at all. When you have your family with you being safe is the most important thing.
Thanks for posting the follow-up/fix to your emergency flight while en route to the Turks and Caicos with your family. I think anyone who has ever piloted an aircraft would agree that you made the right call by turning back. Happy flying and safe landings!
I enjoy your videos. Thank you for putting them out there. Yep, social media is good for that. All kinds of courage from people, sitting in front of a computer screen by themselves, who are not face to face. It's one thing to have a conversation where people share their view, but there is no need for it degrade to insults or personal attacks.
Great to see Pompano Beach Airport again. Lived on the southwest corner of airport on 5th ave & 10th from Nov.1986 -Feb 1988. Goodyear Blimp use to fly over house all the time. Thanks for the video. Great work. So Long.
No matter how good a engine or aircraft crud will manifest at some stage in those fine parts,be wary of fuel uploads from older fuel storage tanks also parts strip down after overhaul work where remnants of gaskets can cause issues if they get sucked into critical areas, you were lucky and we have all learned something from your excellent video's,thank you and happy safe flying with your family.
Thanks for posting the fix for that problem! I again love your videos! They are truly the best on youtube! I live my flying dreams vicariously through you!
+Niko's Wings - I watched both the original emergency video and this video. Just want to say what a great job you did. You had some pretty precious cargo on board and did a fantastic job caring for them as well as yourself! Strong work sir!
When I watched your video for the first time, I was just about to take the instrument Checkride. Now I am about to step into the instruction world. Time flies. Safe flight buddy.
As far as having the a/c on, it's hot and humid in S. Florida! I grew up there and not once did we not have the a/c on! Thank you and you earned my sub for being awesome!
Good to see it was a simple fix after your emergency landing. Nice to have a mechanic that knows what he is doing and gets to the problem quickly. The girls looked a bit disappointed they didn't get to their destination, however, no doubt you made the right call. A lot of pilots have lot their lives taking a chance, glad to see you are not one of them. Happy flying.
Glad it all worked out. You've handled the whole situation very well, hope I'll be able to keep my cool like that in an emergency. Thanks again for posting these videos.
You had said in the Emergency Video comments that you thought it might have been the injector. I'm glad to see that's all it was, the cost of replacing a jug would have been a lot more than a few shots of cleaner! As to the Air Conditioning, so what? You are the PIC, and it's your decision to use it or not. If you felt that it was safe, who is anyone else to comment? The engine was 'running better' according to your comments, you saw first hand the injector and how it was clogged versus being opened later on. I would have done the same thing. Personally, I think you're a very good pilot, and I hope you live to be an old pilot, instead of a bold pilot. Thanks for the update, I hope the annual goes well for you.
Niko, really enjoy your videos. I'm a fellow Cirrus driver. Just did an engine overhaul so I have been flying vicariously through you for last 4-5 months. Great job! I fly out of KEET (one of your stops for fuel). Blue skies!
Hey just watched your flight and fix after, great efforts, I own a cirrus in the UK and had a similar problem a few years back with blocked injector, take care
You just keep flying buddy......those are just the jealous ones.....Thanks brother for sharing your flights and your way too Cool Bird. Looking forward to the next video.......Blues Skies and Smooth Air.........!!!
I'm not a Pilot, but these vid's are very interesting. Call sign's, runway number's, etc. it's all foreign to me. Man, you guy's are GREAT!!! Wish I knew a fraction of the stuff you guy's know. Thank You for the very interesting and entertaining vid's Niko.
I have watched the emergency videos....first ones I have seen of your channel......I get a kick out of you. Very funny but serious......nicely done.......
What a great video Niko from a great pilot and what appears to be a total sweetheart. Glad everything turned out to be a minor fix. I saw the original video and you handled things so well. I am training myself and it really helps to see someone not panic when things go wrong because it will help me remember not to make things worse by panicking. Happy to subscribe and see more of your adventures!
Really good video's Niko. I came across your Emergency video, which was very well done. You handled it perfectly in my opinion. I am not a pilot, but I have a huge drive to get my PPL. I supplement this itch with simulation flying. It was good to see how you handled it and worked through the steps to attempt to isolate and handle the emergency. Thanks for the video's!
Scratch that itch! I have been in the same boat for years playing FSX. My wife surprised me with a discovery flight on my birthday 4 years ago, and it was great, but timing wasn't ideal for begin the PPL. I recently started my lessons, and just did my first solo 2 days ago. I find myself watching these videos all the time for a number of reasons: ATC communications, pilot handling of various situations, etc. And it makes it even better when a guy like Niko does great editing before the video hits youtube.
Hey, bro. I seen that first video of that "First emergency over the Ocean" and now. I'm watching this. nice. Awesome educational video of aircraft. I was doing so research of your - Cirrus Aircraft. Man, these aircraft cost so money. But, its worth. Living life is priceless.
It never ceases to amaze me how little dirt or debris it takes to have a large negative effect. With most things mechanical and electrical I have found a thorough cleaning goes a long way to resolving problems 90% of the time or better.
Recently subscribed to Niko's channel, but have to say, great job in keeping yourself and family totally safe in the previous video, very calm and collective in what I can only imagine, being a pretty stressful situation, not only with an engine problem, but your girl having ear pressure problems also...hats off Sir..
You did a lot of things right to save your family, yourself and the airplane. It proves doing a 180 is better then going on. Beside in your case you were closer to land. It was a good thing that the plane recorded the CHT temps to narrow the problem down to that one cyclinder.
I am very glad to hear you've found and fixed the problem. I just had to laugh at the "easy fix", I have a feeling that any and everything ran thru your mind at the moment you had the problem but "easy fix"! More like images of a forced landing on water or an approach to some very uninviting terrain but "easy fix", not so much..... Thanks for posting these great videos!
Great couple of videos. I find that allot of mechanical failures start with a .25 cent part (in aviation terms, that's 25 dollars). Very happy for you that it was an easy fix. Subbed!
Hey Niko Fantastic stuff, cool, calm and controlled. Textbook procedure under very stressful circumstances. Had me on the edge of my seat, beautifully documented. Glad all was well and the Cirrus back in shape.. Thanks for the vids. Haters WHY??
Another nice video Niko. I saw the video when you had the engine issue. Nice job keeping the plane in the air and brining it down for a virtually normal landing. You are right to call out UA-cam haters. It's too bad courtesy and manners aren't part of the terms of use here. Keep the videos coming. I fly a SR22 myself but haven't produced any new videos since I haven't found points for the mounts I like. Yours works well but I usually have a passenger up front with me.
Possibly a build up of lead from the fuel over time. Another mechanic I work with(much much more GA experience than I)said it’s actually not an uncommon issue with many GA category aircraft that use 100LL AVGas. Thanks for the video and glad you made it back safe! Also I’d like to highlight a couple of the EXCELLENT safety points you made in the emergency video, to remember that you “never have to get there” and “there’s always another option”... those two statements in my opinion are two extremely important things to apply in the Aeronautical decision making process when conducting any type of flight operations/troubleshooting/ maintenance . I’ve literally seen people on both the Airline and GA side go crosseyed, start shaking, say and do things they don’t really mean when a safety issue could possibly become an obstacle to keeping a schedule or achieving an objective(civilian aviation world). I’m aware that you’re not a flight instructor but you do give solid advice, demonstrate good airmanship and make it available for us to view, as well as immerse us the viewers in the situations you encounter. That’s rockin awesome! Thanks! Any thoughts on becoming a CFI in the future?
Thanks for the kind words Lance. For me teaching and sharing comes natural. I’m trying to share experiences without making it instructional since I’m not a CFI. Yes I have thought of it. Hopefully I will be able to make the life space it requires.
Man I hope after finding that clog in injector, they did a full flush of fuel tank, pump and fuel line. New fuel filter and checked and cleaned all other injectors. Great videos and happy flying.
Subscribed ! Love the Videos on the channel keep them coming! Great to see these familiar airports again.. did my training over at FXE, I love flying in south Florida . Safe travels !
Having watched the emergency I so wanted to know what caused the vibration and there we have it, a clogged fuel injector. Now, having watched Niko's Wings videos how can you ever go back to everyday TV!!! Just keep it coming but please, no emergencies!! We had a hiccup many years ago heading out over the Arabian Sea in a Cessna 402 so I felt every second of your decision making and return to base, you're a cool guy!
Thanks for sharing your videos. Your a fine pilot and your videos are amazing.. It is inspiring me to once again follow my dream of flying.. Thanks and keep up the great work..
Thank you AND your A/P for taking us along while you went under the hood, awesome find. Are you able to see reduced fuel flow from the recording of your previous flight on your engine monitor? Just curious if any other indications were visible. Congrats on the
I have watched 3 of your videos so far and somehow in 20 years & thousands of flight hours I have had less in flight “ drama “ Other then some very uncomfortable turbulence and major up and down drafts while mountain flying....You deal with it very well. Nice airplane BTW!
Come pick me up at Page Field, I could use some nice buzzing around, head to key west for some lunch and then back to Page Fld. !!!!! Great flight, and good to see everything is all good now. I was thinking fuel pump or injector when you had your initial attempt to turks. Great video Thanks!
Watched your first emergency video, then this one... Glad to see the plane back in working order... Great job with your decision on that engine problem... Better safe than sorry... That minor problem could have escalated quickly into a major problem, especially over water... Good decision you made... Great flying and the ATC guys were awesome... Some of the best I've seen... You have a great family as well, look after them... As they always say, God bless and keep the blue side up...
@@NikosWings ok, have to find a way to come up with that... I'm kinda low budget, but there probably some kinda program to help me out... Guess, if your dedicated enough, you'll find a way?...
Has anyone ever said you look like Milo? I am glad it was nothing serious! You did a great job with the emergency and I am glad they were able to get your plane back in operation so quickly.
@@NikosWings Sorry, didn't know it was asked.. I must not have looked far enough in the comments. It is said that we all have our double in the world.. probably several.
Thanks for sharing your video's. I did notice at about 2:03 minuets into your video i noticed a fuel drip just before you turned your fuel pump on. Have a great day and safe flying.
Hey Niko, I've been watching your videos with a lot of interest and I just wanted to say thank you for your content and for your short intros. Too many UA-camrs put really long intros into their videos and it drives me badshi$ crazy. So thanks for the good work! Stay safe in the clouds my friend!
@@NikosWings Agree'd brother. I watch a lot of piloting channels and sailing channels. Long intros drive me nuts. My wife and I are planning to semi-retire in 4 or 5 years (once the kids are out of highschool), buy a sailboat and possibly a small airplane (once I complete my SEL and I ratings) and move our happy butts to my wife's home town in the Philippines spending much of the rest of our lives sailing and flying the world. Channels like yours help me keep up my ground and radio game and sailing channels help keep my love of the water alive... And since I live and work in Bahrain and can't complete my SEL, I get to live vicariously through you and others like you posting your adventures on the interwebs for us dirt monkeys to enjoy :-)..... I've only got about 20 hours or so left to go before I can checkride with the FAA, so in short, I've really enjoyed your channel and following along on your flights.
Niko, criticism comes along with the territory. The more popular the channel, the more you will see the trolls come out. Although it might be frustrating, take it as a compliment. As your channel grows, the more you will see. For the most part, I only see positive feedback. Keep up the good work.
I work on these a lot here at our FBO. 100LL does get very sticky and clogs things. I soak those injectors in MEK and it instantly looks like blue cool aid. Fuel will certainly build on these. Get them cleaned frequently. It's cheap insurance. Nice fine wire plugs btw. Haven't seen those in a while. Cheers.
Hmmm, I was pretty confident after running the engine that it was all good, but still took all the precautions like keeping the CAPS cover open and using Vx for the climb to gain altitude as quick as possible with flaps in. Thanks for watching.
By the way, I subscribe to another aviation channel, Jerry W, who also seems to have faced a troll army recently. Don't worry about the haters; your videos are great.
Great video. Very helpful and I appreciate you sharing it. Gives a good insight into real life issues that can happen in the air. Glad it worked out the way it did and you and your family are safe.
I would have the whole system checked out including clean up of fuel tank ,pump, lines, injector lines injectors, I guess annual means all that and lot more. I could hear the engine not running right, the high temperature in one cylinder tells some indication that fuel starvation might be happening etc, glad everything worked out. happy flying.
It takes a lot of guts to put it out there to the public for all to see. There will always be critics especially in aviation. You are a fine pilot and I appreciate your videos because they show an enthusiasm for flying and a fresh, honest perspective. Keep it up!

p.s. if your daughter ever has issues getting her ears to clear try teaching her the valsalva maneuver. That may help a lot on those long trips at high altitude.
Thanks for that Zach. I didn't even know there was a name to that maneuver. I'll look up the technique.
'Err on the side of caution' ! Just saying:-)
I was thinking the same thing. How does an educated person make such an airror .
Good advice Zach! I had to go to altitude chamber refreshers every 5 years and saw a real value for GA. I have since heard that FAA does them for free in OKC. I bring up the chamber since you advised ValSalvas. Great comment.
The valsalva manoeuvre is not recommended during a cold as it may induce an ear infection

Cool dude, glad it wasn't something worse. Engine sounded beefier than in first video without the odd knocking noise. Glad all is well on that front.
Just discovered you. You are one hell of a good pilot! Amazing.
Enjoy the video! Keep them coming Niko.
Good deal, Niko! Enjoyed the follow-up video. Bad batch of fuel, sediment. See how fuel filters are at annual. Thanks
Good to see that the issue was resolved. Safe flights and blue skies my friend!
I am very glad to hear you've found and fixed the problem. I just had to laugh at the "easy fix",
I have a feeling that any and everything ran thru your mind at the moment you had the problem but "easy fix"! More like images of a forced landing on water or an approach to some very uninviting terrain but "easy fix", not so much..... Thanks for posting these great videos!
Great video! I give you credit for waiting for ATC to turn back to Boca in the previous video. I can't say I would have the same patience.
Great couple of videos. I find that allot of mechanical failures start with a .25 cent part (in aviation terms, that's 25 dollars). Very happy for you that it was an easy fix. Subbed!
Hey Niko
Fantastic stuff, cool, calm and controlled.
Hi Nikko,
When depending, it said 500 and then nothing more. Was it an audio problem.
Hi Niko, Watched both videos, excellent piloting skills, Dude. That is one beautiful aircraft. Stay safe. Ian, UK
Glad to here it was a simple fix good luck with the rest of the annual Great posting you do all the best cheers
I'm new to your channel and you look to be a very competent and professional pilot. Thanks for sharing. Nice job!
Great job - you kept yr cool on the emergency and handled it very well - a great tutorial on how to troubleshoot whilst still flying the plane.
You have some good luck that it didn't lean that cylinder too much causing some major damage. Great video!
Nico... The trolls know who they are. Great job and keep up the open and honest Videos! Despite the un-relaxed people out there!
I'm glad to see that it was just a blocked injector.
I'd have to say that you are one fine pilot.
Having watched the emergency I so wanted to know what caused the vibration and there we have it, a clogged fuel injector. Now, having watched Niko's Wings videos how can
you ever go back to everyday TV!!! Just keep it coming but please, no emergencies!! We had a hiccup many years ago heading out over the Arabian Sea in a Cessna 402 so I felt every
second of your decision making and return to base, you're a cool guy!
Thank you!
Thank God it was just a clogged Fuel injector. Good video. Tks for the share.
Thanks for the follow-up video, glad it was something simple
I'll be sure to CLEAN my Fuel Injectors, before I fly to the Caribbean... Thanks, Niko!
Thanks Adam
Come pick me up at Page Field, I could use some nice buzzing around, head to key west for some lunch and then back to Page Fld. !!!!! Great flight, and good to see everything is all good now. I was thinking fuel pump or injector when you had your initial attempt to turks. Great video Thanks!
Thanks for sharing. Very interesting and congrats on figuring it out so rapidly.
Thanks Dale
@@NikosWings hey, not a problem...
Say, what would it take to get a pilot certificate? The cost and all...
Budget $10K and 6 months to 1 year plus homework and study time at home/ground school
Oh boy Milo again? Can’t stand that man...
Ha, it was the fuel mixture pulley...
kinda what i thought, but what do i know i'm blind as a bat.
Hey Niko, I've been watching your videos with a lot of interest and I just wanted to say thank you for your content and for your short intros. Too many UA-camrs put really long intros into their videos and it drives me badshi$ crazy. So thanks for the good work! Stay safe in the clouds my friend!
I too don’t like long intros as they ass almost no value to the story
You have no idea how many I delete...
Cheers.
That first flight after the repair must have been a little more nerve-wracking than you let on. Great work!
Entertaining video! I fly out of Pompano every week and see alot of Cirrus aircraft there
Great video. Very helpful and I appreciate you sharing it. Gives a good insight into real life issues that can happen in the air. Glad it worked out the way it did and you and your family are safe.
Thanks for the follow up Niko!! Great job on these videos and teaching!
I'm happy to see it was an easy fix. A troll will troll... Keep up the awesome flying and videos.
