      Hi, trying to plan this trip, please help if you have time: 1.What shuttle service did you use? 2. Is it absolutely necessary to have a dry suit? 3. Any time of year ok? 4. Fishing to eat allowed?… any advice or direction would be appreciated.

    • @WhenNaturePauls
      @WhenNaturePauls  2 місяці тому

      @4ndrewthe I live close to Spey bay so used the wife to drop me off, Fred with permission of Spey bay golf club left his vehicle in their car park. Dry suit not necessary, especially in warmer months, mines a two piece so not water tight anyway, but very warm. Could be done anytime of year, obviously be a lot colder in the winter and with short daylight hours. July and August are peak midge season and of course water levels need to be taken into consideration. I've never fished it, it's a big salmon river and so highly regulated, people pay a fair wedge to fish it.

    Great video, thanks for sharing. Did a trip there in September 2022. Had similar camping spots but was interested to see the island you used on the last night. It was totally overgrown with an invasive plant then, Himalayan balsam I think.

      Thank you for watching. Didn't see any Himalayan balsam and you would think it would still be around at the moment. I used to love popping the little seeds as a youngling, the smell always takes me back. I reckon September is probably the best time of year to paddle it. All the best, Paul

    Done this twice from Newtonmore (both in August). I consider this the best river journey in the UK. Always find the island camping spots difficult to spot though! I do admire you going for it in November- clearly the heated tent was a true haven. :)

    • @WhenNaturePauls
      @WhenNaturePauls  Рік тому

      Was all a bit last minute, but yeah it is a superb touring river and the hot tent definitely made things a lot more pleasant. Some of the spots have recently been flooded right through leaving them a little less appealing.

      Some fire wood from home, just in case we needed it. It got a good soaking, but still burnt well 👍 a dry bag would have been my preferred option but I didn't have a large/strong enough one spare.

    Did the spey on paddleboards from kingussie to the sea in oct last year with 3 of my chums, Amazing trip sleeping on island in the woods, we all got very very ill though, lots of dead fish as well , Whats happening to our rivers

    • @WhenNaturePauls
      @WhenNaturePauls  8 місяців тому

      I read about that in the news, dead fish and some paddlers getting sick. I think in the end they put it down to some oxygen shortage rather than someone/something poisoning the water, but sounds like bs to me; very sad. Fortunately none of us got ill.

    • @djhillfinger
      @djhillfinger 8 місяців тому +1

      @@WhenNaturePauls yeah that was about us, I went to the local newspaper about it because when we were on the train on the way home taking it in turns to run to the toilet we read a story about loads of dead fish and they were asking people to report anything,

    Great trip through some fantastic rapids. Just got a 15 foot Grumman Canoe. What's the name of the knot you use to tidy away you're bow mooring line? Looks nice and tidy. Cheers

    • @WhenNaturePauls
      @WhenNaturePauls  8 місяців тому +1

      Awesome, I'm sure you'll have a great time with it. Without watching it back I couldn't say for certain, but my go to knot is often the Evenk hitch, used by the Evenk people of northern Russia to secure horses. It was popularised by Ray mears (at least for me) and is very efficient. Paul Kirtley has an excellent demo on UA-cam. Glad you enjoyed the video, happy adventures, Paul.

    Yeah you should maybe think about not showing knives... it's the UK. You don't need them as you're never more than 50miles from a shop and it puts UK viewers off.

    • @WhenNaturePauls
      @WhenNaturePauls  Рік тому +3

      Hi mate,
      I hope it doesn't put anyone off, but I do consider them to be an essential piece of kit. I usually carry three, they all have a built purpose and not one is designed for stabbing. I have one in my BA for cutting rope should I fall out and become entangle (it could literally save my life) another for food prep as you would at home and a third for camp duties, cutting cord, carving, splitting wood, feather sticks (essential in wet conditions) but the list is endless really. It is important to recognise it is a tool and not a weapon, you wouldn't expect a carpenter or a carpet fitter to come to you home without a knife so it is all about context, after all I could just as easily stab someone with a tent peg. If I were to carry it on a night out then clearly it should be considered as an offensive weapon and I would hope I would be arrested for it. Perhaps people may be put off, but hopefully it may also help people understand that knives are not just weapons and in the right setting no different to a chisel and after all this is in part a bushcraft channel so one should in expect it.
      Sorry for such a long reply 😂 but i wanted to explain my position.
      Regardless I hope you enjoyed the video, Take care, Paul.
