    Just bought Talbott’s book, The Inescapable Love of God. What a great title!
    Augustine ushered in so many problematic ideas into Christianity. I love how Talbott challenges some of these. As the early Protestant reformers utterly failed to look at his ideas with any real insight.

    Good interview...Talbott's book has been the defining work on Universal Reconciliation in modern times for me since discovering it in 2004.

    While I love David Bentley Hart's book on universalism, I think Talbott's is the best introduction to the subject, especially for those coming from an evangelical background.

      'Heaven's Doors' by George Sarris is my choice for best introduction with 'The Inescapable Love of God' and 'The Evangelical Universalist' being slightly more academic. I think that a wonderful piece of writing that explains Christian Universalism is to be found in the conclusion section of the old book 'Christ Triumphant' by Thomas Allin . Another brilliant old book is 'The Restitution of All Things' by Andrew Jukes. Of course there are several other fine books concerning this theology. 'The Triumph of Mercy' by George Hurd is a recent book that is certainly one of the best IMO

    It would be a very important achievement if someone could do a serious in depth study of the psychology of Augustine and the related cultural shift in the West that led to the belief in the reality of Divine Hatred and Wrath and Everlasting Torment. This is a subject that cannot be overestimated.

    Some Eastern Orthodox deny post-mortem repentance because they say that you need to be physically embodied and in relationship with others in order to do heart-transforming acts of repentance.

    I study KJV. Agree with comments. The mainstream view of Christianity is abusive and hurtful. Everything belongs to Christ. We are commanded to love…even our enemy who is blinded. He cast out demons. As on earth as it is in heaven. Best Father ever!

    Enjoyed this very much! Even more eye-opening the second time watching! I've just learned of Thomas Talbott about 2 or 3 years ago. He's brought much to the idea of Universal Salvation, and/or Universal Reconciliation (some Universalists will differ) but the overall affect is perceived as the same, that God is the essence of love and holiness without exception. Thank you for your efforts and I'm proud to be a subscriber of your channel! Cheers!

    Hard-core fundamentalists (e.g. bible literalists) often forget a key passage in the Bible: "with God all things are possible". With that, the salvation of all souls, therefore, is possible. Surely, there needs to be reform and spiritual cleansing and correction, but to see God as a being that cannot and will not forgive us for some sins and then send one off to an eternal hell goes against Jesus' own teachings, as the Son of God, "to love one's enemies". Does not love mean correction, purification, and reform as opposed to eternal punishment? For me love means forgiveness and a willingness to work with us through change and difficulties as opposed to being like King Henry the eighth.

    THE Thing that brought me into this faith is A.E. Knoch's book THE PROBLEM OF EVIL AND THE JUDGMENTS OF GOD. He deals a lot with the bible's teaching of The Eons.

    I just want to point out that someone can agree with Dr. Talbott about the nature of God's justice, while also holding that, because of free will, some people will resist God's justice/mercy for eternity. In fact, I think this is very close to the view that the Eastern Orthodox hold, and I would also argue that it was probably the view of many early church theologians.

I am writing a book myself on apokatastasis and have interviews lined up with Brian Zahnd, Robin Parry, and Peter Hiett, but I would absolutely love to have just a moment’s time to pick Mr. Talbott’s brain. Do u know of any way I can contact him?

    43 minutes in and I haven't heard any mention of The Cross... and somehow I think THAT is vital... as Paul says The Cross is a snare (GK: skandal)... and if the cross (God's work in Christ work on the cross) is not the foundation of our universalist faith -- YIKES.-- The cross (His work not ours) is indeed is a snare-skandal. "I determined to know nothing among you except Christ and Him crucified. Just thinking.
    PS - thanks for this episode.

    While I respect Mr. Talbott, I was hoping to hear biblical exegesis on why he believes in universalism. This seems like an emotionally based argument. What would his universal lens of Romans 9 be? What it be in John 3? Or throughout the book of Revelation? The fact that he does not see everlasting punishment as plausible, is a notion that he does not see the severity of sin. Also, if universalism is true, why be a Christian at all? Might as well be merry, for tomorrow we die, and will be heaven. Who needs to follow the sermon on the Mount? Who needs to follow any of Jesus' teachings if we all go to heaven? I was hoping to hear this from a biblical perspective, not an emotional/philosophical one.

      Dear Lee, thank you for your comment. The scope of the interview was mainly to speak about Dr. Talbott Journey, rather than the Biblical Exegesis of Universalism. I encourage you to check Dr. Talbott's Book "the inescapable Love of God" that contains some strong arguments on Universalism. Also, I encourage you to follow and subsribe to this Channel. You will find a lot of Videos asnwering Questions on Universalism.

      "Also, if universalism is true, why be a Christian at all?" Your question proves that you do not understand Christian universalism. Christian universalism teaches that no one enters the Kingdom except through Christ. It does not teach that everyone simply enters the Kingdom regardless of what they do or believe. It teaches that everyone will be brought through purgation ("Our God is a consuming fire") to the realization that Christ is the only door into the Kingdom. No one can enter the Kingdom who is not able to follow the Sermon on the Mount and no one follows the Sermon on the Mount except through Christ. Universalism is not a free ticket into the Kingdom. Everyone eventually pays the same price: Purgation through relationship with Father/Son/Holy Spirit. How God achieves this universal salvation is known completely only to God. But it will be achieved.

      Biblical support please? Exegetically. Also, what do you do with the passages that explicitly state the reality of hell? I could be misunderstanding something, I am willing to admit that, but please, from a biblical perspective, explain this view, or point me in the direction of an article or book that states this from a biblical perspective, and refutes every passage that deals with eternal punishment for those who do not accept Christ. I genuinely would love to know this.

      1 Timothy 2:1-6 King James Version (KJV)
      2 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
      2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
      3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
      4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
      5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
      6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
      2 Peter 3:9 King James Version (KJV)
      9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
      Romans 11:32-34 King James Version (KJV)
      32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
      The will and being of God is absolute and cannot be ultimately thwarted or changed. Genesis says that man was created good. There is nothing in Genesis that says that anything was created depraved or evil. Damnation is nowhere planned by God. The will and becoming of man is relative and dependent on God. Man is ontologically relative and dependent on the ontological absolute reality of God. Man is incapable of ultimately thwarting or altering this ontological will of God. God's love cannot be finally escaped. In this life or in death or beyond all things will be made new according to God. Even the Calvinists will be saved. Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.
      Have you ever met a Calvinist who said, "If God had predestined me to damnation then I say, Praise the Lord!"

    • @k.arlanebel6732
      @k.arlanebel6732 5 років тому +5

      Universalism is actually the most difficult and demanding of all Christian paths to accept. Calvinism is the easiest.
