Though I was born in India, I grew up in north Italy. The story behind this song is very painful. "Bella Ciao" is an Italian protest song that started in rural Italy which spoke about the plight of the "Modine women" the paddy field workers during the late 19th century. They used to sing this song against poverty and tough labor conditions. The song later evolved and became a symbol to fight against fascism.
