Oh thank goodness, I asked for a video like this years ago. I didn't think you'd actually do it. Especially when so many forums say it sounds similar to an SM58

I the context of a mix I can see it working. There were old live engineer guys on an old forum I used to frequent in the early 2000s that rattled on about this over the 58.

    Freddy Mercury's favorite Mic!
Yes, these mics were designed for use at max 2". They're not flat even at 6", that's why your Behringer sounds better at that distance. The EQ on most of the mics you tested varies by the inch. So a stage singers Mike is EQed for around 1".
The Behringer actually misses that goal having it's best sound at least 6" away.
By the way, I loved your musical interlude - very refreshing and unexpected 😊
Edit: After reading all the comments it's quite clear that people are not used to the usage distance catagories. Andrew rightly, if cautiously, points out how trebly the mic gets after 6 inches but that's not what it was designed for.
Use a pencil for voice moderation. You'll have a larger area of linearity.

It's on the brighter side but still sounds good. I like the look of it. Reminds me of my 545SD I bought used back in the late 90s -- pretty sure it was made in the 70s. Good sounding mic -- excellent on snare and guitar cabs.

This is the best reviewer of all time! Had to like and subscribe.
That 565 sounds awesome. It has a brighter sound than the SM58. Its what I needed and have been trying to find. The looks are spot on too.
The Bheringer or how ever you spell it is actually very good fornthe price. Impressive. Theyre a very good company too with many great instruments.
What preamp are you using with that 565?
Sorry if you said thst already, but I missed it. New to the tech talk. 😂

Danke! Nicely done, as always, Bandrew! There's not much to ad. I didn't like it for spoken word on your voice. Guitar, electric and acoustic, sounded terrible to my ears. The awkward sound of string slides was unbearable
The acoustic guitar sounded harsh in the mids and over all unbalanced. Where it shines is for singing vocals.

  • @Corey_Monsewicz

when I record bands this is the one I use for the live vocals most of the time. It's my go to dynamic mic. I also typically use a stereo pair of 545SD's on guitar cabs!

It's the bright, sparkly Shure dynamic basically.
It's my choice for higher pitched male singing who like to sit on top of the mic (but with a pop filter and a de-esser - possibly start to turn if off axis maybe as well.)

I'm a bass/baritone. The sd565 has more in the midrange. I compared it to the SM58 with the same EQ and the SM58 has more low end. It's weird that it cuts more in the mix compared to the SM58 altough it's older 🤔

one of, if not the only, mic on stage at the original Woodstock.
I'd grab one of these if it ever appeared in front of me.

I think every other mic you tested in this video sounded better than the 565SD for vocals. Its got quite a nasty mid-range honkiness and nasal quality.

I actually prefer the XM5800 and use a couple myself, super cheap and perfectly good enough for a high quality vocal sound through an amp for open mic stuff.
Yes the more expensive mic's have a touch more detail in the audio, but the difference really isn't justified in the huge price increase, unless money isn't an issue and you're recording in a studio, and want the absolute best possible mic's, and in those cases surely you would spend £1000's on a mic not £100's ?
