@@DemonDethchase Okay, but Sonic and Tails R isn’t an official project. It’s cool that you can like something that isn’t official, but I’m getting tired of people throwing in fan projects and theories as an official thing when it’s not.
@@flame2417 who said it was official? All there saying is that tails character is a lot better written in R which is how he SHOULD be portrayed which makes sense. We acknowledge the official tails we have isn't like this, just could be a lot better....like R
@@ultimate8948 right, especially when in Forces Tails is basically stuck playing sidekick to Classic (Sonic) because his Tails isn't there. And the little fox cub cannot get doing ANYTHING at all that makes him look capable - not even fight back against regular Egg Pawns before Classic appears! - lest he shatter the illusion that we actually need Classic, despite the fact he could have easily been dropped and nothing would have changed in the story. I wonder if they thought the weaker Tails looks, the stronger Classic will look in comparison.
At least Tails had a sort of development to becoming reliant on Sonic again. Shadow has always been kind of sketchy, not that his actual character is a good one, but it's not THAT surprising to see him change like that, since his core design was "hot topic sonic" with some lore slapped into him. on the other hand, Knuckles didn't have any excuse to revoke his title as the sole guardian of the Master Emerald, there's not any kind of good explanation to any of his other changes either, and his character also sucks nowadays, he went from naive yet serious tough guy, to basic dummy knucklehead, and that's a terrible downgrade if you ask me.
The decline on Tails' character depicts how little Sega seems to care about this franchise. I don't have a problem with Tails being scared, he is a kid and he has almost no confidence but even when he was afraid, he still had the guts to help on the situation either because he's the only hero around or to help his best friend. It seems Tails being scared and relying on Sonic is all Sega understands now, Lost World ruined him and Forces did damage his reputation considerably, all he does now is play the nerd and scream to Sonic for everything, he can't even use his two tails for anything else but to fly into nothing. The message Tails was supposed to represent is "even if you are afraid, you can still achieve anything", what happened to that? Better yet, why do these writers had to ruin him like this?
Because the previous writers for the mainline games of Sonic have little to no knowledge of the characters that they are writing for. This been going on since Colors and now they are getting replace with new writers for Prime/Rangers. I still can't believe that they worked on "Happy tree friends" before... Not to try to be an ass about it but, good. They fucked up the story so much and didn't do anything to improve in general. Hopefully Prime/Rangers can improve Sonic and the gang characters by a mile!
I would disagree on the part of Lost World ruining Tails. Throughout many points of the game its stated that Tails is right and should be listened to. Sonic failing to do so is what keeps causing problems, to the point of almost being captured to which Tails saves him from. And even then, Tails wasn't rescued. He saved himself. The only bad part was that weird argument they had about Sonic supposedly trusting Eggman more, but I think it was just a weird attempt to build on the whole trusting Tails thing.
Tails's portrayal in recent games is purely disgusting in my opinion, and don't get me started on the Archie Comics. I'm just glad that the writers for the IDW comics knew how to treat these beloved characters.
Check out Sonic and Tails R as well. It easily stands head and shoulders above anything the True Dark Era (2010-) has put out and just not for just Tails but all the other characters. And when Emi Jones (voice of Tails and creator of the show) was asked writing it. Chaomix: Anything from the Meta Era writing you try to avoid when writing Sonic and Tails R? Emi: uh, all of it. Also within the first 30 seconds of the first episode, Tails probably did more than he did in the whole of Forces. Then within the whole 10 minute running time of episode 7, he probably did more than he did in the entire 10 year run of the Meta Era from Colours to Forces.
@@seldomstudios6351 On steroids (I'm not even joking just search up "Titan Tails" lol!). That said he was pretty good in the Archie comics post-reboot imo.
It’s crazy even in sonic x tails doesn’t go crying for sonic especially when shadow was trying to kill Cosmo. Tails was of course no match but at least he was being brave and not being a wuss and crying for sonic.
Right, as Shadow had laid out Sonic and Knuckles moments earlier and when it came down to Tails to stand up to Shadow, while we don't expect him to win, Tails still tried. And even despite knocked down, the kid still got back to his feet to try again.
I know and it remains my favorite moment from him. Tails fights Shadow for basically the whole episode and even when he's getting the crap beaten out of him he still tries to stop Shadows.
Shadow before he was about to knock down Tails in that episode gave that little grin out which likely showed him respecting Tails for his tenacity against the odds. Remember that small little detail? I doubt SEGA does.
And what kinda makes it worse is that a few cutscenes before the cutscene when Sonic Pushed Tails into the elevator Tails said “With all the generators destroyed, we can blow this joint and head home. We did it dude!” And Sonic says *”We? I don’t remember you fighting off any insane robots.”* Yes thats true but still. If he didn’t have to help translate what Yacker was saying then I’m pretty sure he would’ve been fighting with Sonic.
apparantly in the japanese version it's the opposite that happens, tails says it's all thanks to sonic and then sonic corrects him by saying that tails did indeed help
@@firecreeper2249 Yeah, because the writer in the japanese localisationteam understood that neither of them would want to take the credit and leave the other out.
But if we're honest, let's say Tails never got the translator fully working; wouldn't Sonic had gone around and trashed Eggamans robots, and freed the Wisps anyway? It's not like Eggman was hiding anything
SEGA has got to learn that Sonic isn’t just about Sonic. I want to see more of Sonic and Tails friendship in the modern games and I also want tails to develop as a character. Hopefully we can play as tails again someday.
Right as its been 15 years and counting now since his - and pretty much everyone else! - last playable appearance in a mainline game, outside outsourced titles like Boom and Mania. He needs to be playable again in Rangers, along side Knuckles and Amy. Because if Boom: Rise Of Lyric could have them playable again in 3D, despite all its problems, then there's really no excuse for their absence in Rangers
@@X2011racer They did overwork the people making Golden Axe Beast Rider and Sonic Boom big time. The reason I'm comparing Sega to Konami is because they both have pachinko machines. Which means they only sometimes care about making games that are good.
@@orangeslash1667 Sonic Boom was on development hell after Sega said "oh yeah, now make it a Wii U game" because of the CryEngine not being compatible with the fucking Wii U (it was originaly a next gen game), they remade the game and Sega didn't give them the time they needed, they kept the release date the same.
Sonic Team really did Tails dirty throughout the last decade. He is my favorite character in the series and watching him go through this in the last games really burnt a hole in my heart. I hope Sonic Team can pick up the pieces and put him right back on track.
I hope they bring all the characters back to how they were before. Shadow not as an edgy version of Sonic, Rouge not being only the Flert Woman, Knuckles doing something... Among others.
@@pablozanoto5801 the only character they changed because of complains was Amy, and she didn't have any development or whatsoever, but worst of all, is she basically became a flat character now, at least she had defining traits before, what's left to her now?
@@Eldoofus There was nothing left of her version until 2006. Before, she was obsessed with Sonic, and this obsession was reducing through games. She also did anything to help others without wanting anything in return. Now she's only there in games because fans don't want Team Sonic without the character who nearly replaced Knuckles many times. She should still have some of that obsession, but not that much, and when SEGA practically zeroed it, she became empty.
you know when you think about it tails behavior in forces kinda represents sega during the time forces came out. tails cowering in front of chaos represents how afraid they were to return to adventure like gameplay and story and classic sonic saving tails represents how reliant they become on classic sonic
If anything i think he worse than how he started back in the classic games even before he got his character development he was helping out and fighting robots now he does nothing
Yeah his like luigi now.But at least Luigi even do how much he scares to fight he always does it no matter how scare he is just like tails in sonic adventure.
EXACTLY OMG, It was so bad the way sega treated tails. He went from soft floofy boi that you don't wanna upset to soft floofy boi who's a punk ass dick and scared of everything
You know, Sonic's lack of trust in Tails in the Colors scene was very uncharacteristic. It'd make more sense in Lost World since he let him get hurt earlier-- here it makes no sense. In older games he would have reassured they would win.
It would of been a great way to have some sort of tag team battle too. Imagine if you find out Tails was building a plane on the side and was able to help out Sonic from the sidelines.
i agree every single thing you said. tails is supposed to be sonic’s sidekick but now he is just a kid who just stands near sonic and watch what he is doing
That’s actually a good explanation for why Tails has mostly relied on Sonic for the past decade. Personally, I think it’s because of the lackluster writing. But yeah, Great video.
That's honestly a good way to look at it, but unfortunately the monkeys at Sega saw that nobody complained and said "Yep! Time to make him a coward." It's sad how they ruined a lot of the characters and their personalities.
@@bluphenyx what are you talking about? Even if we Sonic fans did care that time that wouldn't have changed a thing. I mean look at how Shadow was portrayed in Shadow the Hedgehog. When people complained about it did SEGA do something about it. No.
I might be off-point but personally I think the reason why Sega hired new writers is because haters made fun of the writing back when the games first released. While the writing for the older games do get appreciated nowadays, Sega already made the decision to hire new writers.
I really feel sorry for Tails as his character regressed in recent years. He went from breaking his best friend out of highly secured prison into shaking his boots in the sight of a character who he already defeated in a stronger form. I think his current portrayal of his fear makes him seem more like a character incapable of acting rather than someone who is afraid but won’t back down from the matter at hand. I just hope we get some kind of redemption for his next appearance.
Couldn’t agree more, and also wow I never thought about that perspective on the unleashed cutscene, makes sense now, great job and great points on this video👌
Tails back then: A young fox who is a mechanic determined to become a hero and would take Sonic’s place if he died. Tails now: A toxic p*ssy who cant fight Chaos 0 and is a jerk to Sonic, and also is barley useful.
I miss Sonic Adventure 2 Tails. Maybe not his gameplay but his character. He really stepped up in a big way in that game. Like they wouldn't have even found Eggman on the Ark without him and he made the fake emerald that Sonic used to stop the cannon. It was cool. Even Amy had a lot of good moments.
Going to be totally honest, I don't think I really understand this argument. Why would something Sonic does out of his own (uncharacteristic, mind you) lack of trust for Tails be the thing to make Tails more dependent on him? You can hear that he's upset that Sonic pushed him into the elevator, and that he's afraid that Sonic can't do it without him. Tails would be a little upset that Sonic didn't believe in him to fight, and instead pushed him away just to "keep him safe" from something he could probably fight on his own without Sonic even being there. He would want to prove himself to his best friend, he's always wanted to do that, his entire character arc in Adventure is about him learning to stand up for himself and show that he's strong too. And that would make him more motivated to stand by Sonic's side no matter what, not less. So he could regain his best friend's faith in him. To be fair, I love Tails. He's always been my favorite. So I may not be thinking of quite the right character for him. (I tend to get the Sonic and Tails R characters stuck in my head.) But in this case, I don't think this scene shows where Tails changed. It shows that Sonic changed, and lost faith in his best friend, for an inexplicable reason that was never made clear. I honestly just blame it on the writers knowing nothing of Sonic, the character or the franchise, when they were hired, and changing his character so that they could push him to the front and move every other character to the side since, in their eyes, nobody other than Sonic even matters. I don't blame Sonic, I don't blame Tails, I love both of them. I blame the writers for not feeling the same about them, and I blame the game designers for not wanting Tails there for the boss fight and wanting an excuse for that. As a bonus, here's how I would have everything after the boss is defeated and Sonic goes down to meet Tails play out: Sonic, after Tails finds him: See buddy? I was fine. Don't worry about me so much, okay? Tails: I don't know, you don't look so great to me. I should have tried to help more... maybe I could have stopped this... Sonic: Don't worry about it, Tails. You said you weren't sure if we could beat that... _thing_ even together, and your instincts _never_ fail me. And one of us making it out alive is better than neither, right? Tails: I guess... thanks, Sonic. But I would rather go down with you than make it out knowing I could have done more, knowing it was all my fault. Because that's what best friends do, right? Sonic: When you put it that way... do you forgive me? Tails: Of course I forgive you, Sonic. But you know what the best outcome would be? Us both making it out alive. And there's a better chance of that if we fight together, right? Sonic: Right. At least we both made it out of this one. I promise I'll never doubt you again, Tails. All good? Tails: All good. (high five or fist bump or something here) Tails: Sorry for not helping you as much as I should have. Yacker had a lot to say. I promise I would have picked you up from every fall if I could have. (This line would be funny to see in the remaster, seeing as how he literally does that...) Sonic: Speaking of Yacker... (then you could transition into the next scene where Yacker says he has to go and he joins the rest of the Wisps in stopping the black hole thing)
All I can say is- the movie will be a clean slate for him so hopefully he’s handled way better love this little guy. And thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Thankfully at least in Sonic and Tails R, Sonic still see the little fox cub as an equal who, despite his young age, can still punch above his weight to stand as an equal by Sonic's side. Plus there was this that was said about the show compared the 2010s stories, from the latest Sunset City podcast. Chaomix: Anything from the Meta Era writing you try to avoid when writing Sonic and Tails R? Emi: uh, all of it. Thank the lord for that! Plus in the radio drama, when Tails was having a crisis of confidence within the second episode, worrying he was slowing Sonic down. But rather than looking to take the fox cub home and carry on by himself, Sonic gave him a peptalk to boost his confidence, saying that Tails was the reason they got as far as they had in this current adventure. He even trusted the little fox cub to go and find the Chaos Emeralds Eggman had on the Egg Carrier, while Sonic would get the attention of the robots and take the heat off Tails, in episode 7. Thats more like how it should be. Plus there's nothing wrong with Tails being scared, because there's no courage without fear. "You're (Eggman) wrong! I can depend on Sonic! I won't let him down! I can't! Because... Because he's depending on me! And because of that... I won't lose to you!" Tails Sonic and Tails R (episode 7)
Nice eye pointing out that scene in Sonic Unleashed. Many people overlook that moment and state that's when Tails' character devolved when it's exactly how you explained 👏👌
People also forget that tails straight up went to go rob eggman, and lead a counter-assault to save the president against the black arms who had over whelming strength and numbers. Tails was a real badass between adventure 2, heroes, and shadow. I can't speak for 06 because I haven't played that.
Speaking of Sonic Forces, I found out from a DidYouKnowGaming video on mistranslations in games that the line, "Tails has lost it..." was suppose to be written as, "Tails is lost!" Though I wouldn't be surprised either way, considering the way his character has changed due to a new direction and writing structure...
Isn't it funny how SONIC BOOM of all things had a better portrayal of tails than the mainline games? Anyways, I really like this theory of this kind of character arc. Going from someone that actually wants to help to someone that is scared of almost everything.
Everything began in 2010 with Colors. With the addition of Wisps, Sonic can use the abilities that Sonic friends would normally use and now they're useless, only for being used as background characters...
The joke is, the wisps are technically innocent. Sonic doesn't use any in Forces outside of the rare Teamstage, and people like tails STILL don't bother showing up in the actual level. At this point, it's all just screwed.
@@slwoo7432 I meant the wisps that actually hold abilities and thus could replace characters. if Sonic really wanted, he could have used ringenergy instead for the boost. And rings are not characters, so it's not bad they are replaced.
LPFan I mean to me it would be more insulting if they used the characters as power ups also story wise how could you show that what sonic turns into knuckles or something it wouldn’t really make sense .
I disagree that it was Sonic specifically that caused Tails' character to regress. He's shown himself to be a more than capable fighter and hero. Despite any fear he had or shown, he pushed on anyway and didn't rely on Sonic any longer because he realized he was strong enough to hold out on his own. Maybe not to the same degree as Sonic, but enough for me to think that he's simply just been written differently for whatever reason. Like when he was swarmed by that horde of dark gaia monsters: even if he was outmatched or outnumbered, I find it hard to believe he really would have acted like such a coward by fleeing, hiding, and then calling and waiting for someone to come to his aide. The only other ones he knows for sure who would been capable enough to take them on would only be the likes of Shadow, Knuckles, or Sonic. He has no idea where exactly they would be, so it'd make no sense to call for them to come help. So logically that leads me to believe he was calling for literally just anybody to come to his rescue, for whatever reason. He already knows he's the next most capable outside of them. He would have attempted to fend them off whether he believed he could have or not, because he's shown himself to be a hero and as far as he knows, there's no one else around to step up. It's either that, or he would have strategically retreated to formulate a strategy. In Sonic Colors, he may have displayed fear, but by Sonic instinctively holding his arm in from of Tails to protect him, it means Sonic doesn't realize how capable Tails is, or he just instinctively protects his friend anyway because he cares about him, regardless of how capable Sonic might know him to be. Another possibility is that Tails' character has already been retconned to some degree by this point to be pushed back into a more of a sidekick role and less heroic than Sonic to make the main character "shine" more. Going off that, I believe that whatever reason Sonic had to push Tails to keep him out of the fight, it wasn't specifically out of concern because he saw Tails' expression of fear as too much weakness. He excluded him from the final showdown with Eggman because he just didn't see Tails capable of taking Eggman on, which he was most likely being made to think that way due to how Tails' character apparently was altered, or he just thought Tails might get in the way regardless of how well off Tails would have been. Because no matter what, in a serious fight, Eggman could more easily pin the less powerful/experienced hero and use him as leverage against Sonic. But that still doesn't really make sense either, as they've fought plenty of serious battles together before. Honestly if anything, if Tails' character was written more accurately I believe he would have been upset with Sonic for pushing him out of the fight, for not trusting in him enough; he wouldn't just lose all of his self confidence out right. Especially not to the point where he couldn't believe in himself anymore to even stand up to the weakest of opponents like Chaos Zero. Those are just my thoughts anyway. Good video man, it was interesting. I don't think the characters, nor the games in general have been handled as well as they could have been for ages.
While I agree with you that Tails didn't change during the majority of Colors, I disagree with you saying that the elevator push was when things started to change for him. Its Sonic that changed in that scene. The elevator scene kinda began his lack of confidence in Tails helping out. I think it's Lost World where things began to go downhill for Tails.
Lost world is when the flanderization of the character became much more noticable even as little kid who didn't realize how flanderize the character have became even i felt like something wasn't right with the characters in that game
I disagree with what you said about Sonic in that scene. The thing is if they weren't in space and the building wasn't collapsing and Sonic did something similar like that with Tails with one of Eggman's robots than I agree but here's the thing was they were in space and the whole entire building was collapsing and even when Sonic stayed longer and defeated Eggman and the Nega Wisp he himself had to run away from a black hole and his speed wasn't enough because he himself got rescued by the Wisps. If Tails stayed something would have happened to him while the building was collapsing or he himself would have to run away from that black hole and he does not have the same exact kind of speed like Sonic does that he would have been caught by that black hole even so alongside Sonic if he decided to ride on Sonic's back because of him being too heavy on him. Sonic did not lack confidence in Tails at all he just knew that Tails couldn't make it because he doesn't have the same exact kind of speed like he does and even Sonic's own speed almost didn't save him in the end yet it was mainly the Wisps whom did and brought him back to Earth to be with Tails once more again.
Genuine care can go wrong and end in a lack of confidence, yeah. Issue with this is that this minor arc was resolved at he end of Lost World. Forces has nothing to do with it, yet Tails still somehow does not end up helping much.
Tails and Shadow have been damaged severely by SEGA, but they will always be tied for my favorite Sonic characters. I'm working on stories that depict them as much better than they are currently in canon
Didn't realize the first time Sonic pushed Tails into the elevator because Tails was being "negative" ugh... I swear, Sonic has become more and more unrelatable and annoying as the games go on. Negative people can be annoying but blind positive people are even more!
My granddaughter is SO MAD AT THE COMPANY RIGHT NOW BECAUSE she said HERSELF THAT THEY MADE HIM TO “sensitive” I’m not into sonic but if my granddaughter like it I do:)
The thing about Tails a lot of people seem to miss is Tails being afraid is a core part of his character and not the problem people have with the writing of him in newer games. the problem is him not getting a chance to prove himself and show his bravery, fighting through his fears. That's what always made Tails so admirable. he was a scared kid but he swallowed that fear and fought anyway because people needed him to be brave. he wanted to believe in himself. As for the Forces comparison, because I see it alot, that's a fault of the Black screen with text trying to substitute actually showing us the consequences of Eggman winning. In the context of Sonic Forces, it had been 6 months since Sonic was defeated and the resistance was losing the entire time and Eggman took over 99.8% of the planet. In SA2, Tails psyches himself into a frenzy to fight Eggman when Sonic was defeated, but he very much goes back to being sad and depressed at the loss of Sonic right after. Forces on paper should be fine given the time Tails had to sit on the fact everything is going wrong now that they lost and Sonic is gone and they have been losing for 6 months. The problem is the game never makes it feel earned because it doesn't show us any of what happens after Eggman wins. Also, Tails never beat Chaos 6, and every time he fought Chaos, it was him assisting other characters.
I don't remember tails being particularly scared in SA2(Minus that one earthquake-thing that is very easy to miss) or Shadow the Hedgehog. Also, there is another issue with tails in forces that is not as talked about. The resistance lost contact with him(Which was changed to him having lost it in the localisation, lol). So basically, he just randomly screwed off somewhen during the 6 months without telling anyone, just to try to repair Omega for absolutely no reason at all. There are a lot of issues with this and I don't think I have to explain what. So no, the scene is not fine, because it shouldn't physically be able to happen in a logical script.
@@lpfan4491 i reccomend going over the scenes in SA2 again. Its a classic example of what I mean. Tails is shook in the scene where he and Sonic confront Eggman when Sonic gets caught in the capsule. And when he fights him, he has to psyche himself into it. The scene in forces doesnt imply he was lost for the whole 6 months. It is more logical based on how the characters talk about it that it was relatively recently that he went missing. I don't really see it as an issue. Moreso i see the issue that he never gets an act of courage later in the game to pay it off, and him seeming scared to people doesnt feel earned because he is like that after a black screen with text told them eggman took over as opposed to actually seeing it. After all that time of things only getting worse and worse, with the knowledge of him having failed Sonic being the reason why, it is not unreasonable at all for Tails to be in that state and bail to sort his head, and then happen upon Omega, try to fix him, and them beat himself up over yet another failure. In that kind of scenario, Tails would only be thinking about how its all his fault and he let Sonic down, which leads into him getting Classic Sonic as a sort of second chance.
A negative character arc for Tails actually kind of makes sense. I mean, who wouldn't become super reliant if their surrogate big brother can literally take down gods.
@KIAN The next writer after Shiro Maekawa could be a person who did research and likes world building too. Shiro Maekawa probably would have left at some point which isn't the reason at all. It's like dancing around the glaring point here.
I mean, it is certainly possible that Sonic just ain't coming home. So the discussion about why the shift happens is pretty irrelevant. All we know is that the japanese scripts in the modern era(minus forces) were pretty decent, so japan is still the way to go appearently.
Please do a video on how Amy’s characterization was ruined by Sega. Sonic Team loves to pretend that everything that Amy did in Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Advance, and Sonic Heroes didn’t mean anything. Amy’s whole schtick was that she was Sonic’s equal. The valley girl who, when Sonic wasn’t around, had to take matters into her own hands. She fought in Adventure not only for her friends but to make Sonic respect her as a woman. She is capable enough to fight Zero AND Eggman, but over the years they then delegated her to the lovesick fool, which worked for awhile because she still didn’t let her feelings for Sonic stop her from being strong. Then, they decided to destroy all of that in Sonic 06 after they made her say “If I had to choose between the world and Sonic, I would choose Sonic” which is something Amy would NEVER say outside of that game. She loves Sonic BECAUSE of who he is and if he changed or put the world in danger, she would not love him. NOW, they’re trying to destroy that characterization altogether by making it seem like she’s just the destined love interest and now she sets all that aside to...be a background character, I guess?
It is truly a pain how everyone pretends Amy is fixed now when she is 10 times more useless than the times people claim she was useless. Also, in 06, that was a way of saying that she didn't believe Silver and that there would be a way to save the world without Sonic dying.
Sega really massacred my favorite fox..and the worst part is, I used to see tails as a "Always believe in yourself" type of character. Now he's all "SONIC, HELP MEEE!!" like a coward he is now, unfortunately.
It feels like tails gained so much random fear ,going from sonic 2 where he just had a blank stare even fighting eggman then to becoming scared but gaining courage in sonic adventure to whatever unleashed through forces made

Fun fact around the time sonic colors era sega was getting a lot of hate for having friends in their games and they only added them without giving them much of a purpose
The haters were critics & not actual fans of the series with the fans being betrayed to make the toxic trolls happy. Sega literally justified the fanbase becoming toxic so that they will be heard by doing that. I don't know of an actual fan who felt that way about the once excellent cast of characters. I remember Classic Fans asking for Mighty & Ray to return for the longest time as playable characters.
really, when it comes down to it, Adventure and Adventure 2 were peak development for all the classic characters. beyond that, none of them really held it. Tails in particular, I get goosebumps in the scene in SA2, where Tails says that "Sonic asked me to do something for the first time, and I'm not gonna let him down", because that showed the major growth Tails went through in both games. I still love Tails, but really, they can do better with him
1:16 just, look at the generations trailer, the little tails just looks at the purple thing in the sky, he's not afraid of it, at least, not as much as his older him, that hides behind sonic like a coward, but definetly he is NOT like that
is everyone forgetting how strong tails is Sonic Heroes?? i dont get why people complain about sonic having too many friends to play as. Sonic heroes was my first 3d sonic game and i absolutely loved how strong everyone was
Really I have always been complaining that we can't play as Sonic's friends & that Sonic gets too much focus in the series. 1/3rd of Sonic Adventure was playing as Sonic, that really should be enough, yet somehow Just Sonic Mentality won against the fans of the characters. The real insult is having 2 Sonics & not being able to play as either Tails or Knuckles let alone other characters. There's no point of even having Knuckles appear if he isn't playable & the Master Emerald isn't part of the plot unless Chronicles were canon & Knuckles already failed to protect Angel Island. Knuckles doesn't even mention the ME in the Meta Era Games with a few small exceptions. Sega treats Sonic himself like a joke which is why he has been a lame parody of himself the entire 2010s Decade. Tails is the Victim of Spotlight Hog Sonic in that he almost always has to be with Sonic & be a useless sidekick to make the lame 2010s Hedgehog look better. I don't know any actual fan of the series who wanted this Just Sonic Mentality, although I have missed the characters for a long time. Cream hasn't even been in an actual game since Generations, is she away at school or something? Tikal was well liked yet went completely missing. Whatever happened to raising chao? The 2010s Direction went on for way too long & now there's probably a generation of Sonic Fans who actually believe that's how the Sonic Series is supposed to be.
Tails could have recovered from Unleashed seeing as he was surrounded & completely outmatched alone. Good luck trying to recover from the mandates that need to be killed off & an entire decade of Pontaff crap.
I personally see him as this best friend/little brother to Sonic,One who’s smart, kind, brave and wants to be a hero like Sonic one day when the time is right for him to not depend on him. Sonic Forces & Lost World ruined his character and looking at Sonic Colors…He sat in the sidelines. :(
Another reason why I think 2009 was the final year where Sonic was truly great. Also, Tails doesn't "lose it", in Forces, he just goes missing. Forces, like all Sonic game, had a number of "Americanized changes" when you compare it with the Japanese version of the game. Like, for example, Sonic wasn't actually tortured for 6 months, and Infinite never mentions the word "decades".
I like how in the cutscene Eggman basically admits that what I assume are the wisps are more powerful than him but he still thinks he's more powerful and says he is in the same cutscene too
Hopefully someone puts out a game that remembers the development, and maybe even lets us play as Tails again (hopefully no mech) because i loved his fighting style.
I hadn't really thought about this but yeah it's true Tails' character has been very watered down since earlier games and it was surprising that he gave up in Sonic Forces instead of doing everything he could to make Sonic proud like he had done previously. I hope the new Sonic games have tails do more than the last few and allow Tails space to shine.
Something i wanna see is a writer decides to make tails realize his old ways and that he's changed for the worst but can go back to his more heroic ways
This one word sums up about the main problem with Modern Sonic Games *Flanderization* This has happened to Crash Bandicoot, this happened to certain Mario games, this has also happened to many TV shows, Cartoons, and even anime
Whats interesting is how its reminiscent of the drama triangle; sonic is a rescuer, his attempts at rescuing tails infantilize him causing him to see himself as less capable and as more of a victim that needs saving
I think its cute that Sonic tries to look out for his little bro, not forcing him to take on a challenge he's not comfortable with. But that being said, Tails as a character should always be striving to help Sonic in any way he can, cause that's what he's meant to do, he's a sidekick, not a side character.
I never saw the story from this side! It’s so sad what he became in Lost World and Forces. I thought he wasn’t doing anything in colors, but I didn’t thought about it that way. I seriously hope SEGA brings back the REAL Tails in the next games and movies, tv shows, etc, going forward.
The issue with unleashed isn't that he's scared, but rather that he just plain gives up. Having him try and fail, or even just look like he's running away only to actually be accessing the situation, would have been the best way to show case the dichotomy between his bravery and fear. As it is, it just kind of reinforces his role as sonic's sidekick who's only competent when sonic is around.
I think you managed to show me why I don't care that much for the story of any Sonic game past 2010: The characters most of the time act like they are just fladerized versions of themselves. Too bad, because the Sonic franchise is full of interesting characters and the comics usually bring more justice to them.
Honestly, I would've loved to see SEGA use that colours cutscene to explore Tails' characters. I mean, imagine Tails being haunted by that moment and being shocked at how Sonic thought he couldn't stand up for himself, and whether he could really live up to being his friend. It would fit in Tails' character, whilst also being a natural progression of it without rewriting that scene. Honestly, Modern Tails reminds me more of Luigi - They ramped up his fear to a comedic level. Even then, Luigi would at least build up courage over time whereas Tails is stagnant in his fear.
He went from a cute lovable fox who found his confidence and could even stop eggman on his own. To basically luigi but worse he dosent do anything its even worse the we don't even get to play as most of the sonic characters anymore and he's just a coward and can't defend himself. He no longer was trying to be like sonic or even better he just became a whimp and a nerd who only did the simple translate this or build this. It's sad really luckily we have the idw comics giving tails and others there character back
Pretty much every Sonic character has regressed in characterization. Literally the recent Sonic stories are so terrible and cheap it’s heartbreaking. I’m sick of the only thing going for Shadow is that he’s edgy, Tails is a smart coward, Knuckles is an idiot, Amy is an obsessed freak. It’s terrible.

He went from "Chaos 4, 1v1 me bro" to "Sonic, help me!"
I will never forgive what the franchise did to him and Shadow.
and to knuckles and the rest of the cast
Tails actually had a 3v1 against Chaos4. And Knuckles and Sonic did the majority of the fighting probably.
@@lpfan4491 he still fought Egg Walker alone which is 100 times more intimidating
Same at this rate Nintendo will be better SEGA
Sonic Adventure 2: "I will fight Eggman by myself as payback for killing Sonic!"
Sonic Forces: "oh no chaos im gonna die sonic pls save me"
@@TheRockruffWhoCries Sega has become the next Konami only slightly less Evil.
@@haaxxx9 and just in case that doesn't work at least we have Freedom Planet.
Except shadow
What was he like in the Archie comics???

@@bleakburd4965 I wouldn't need to because you are not wrong
Shadow before he was about to knock down Tails in that episode gave that little grin out which likely showed him respecting Tails for his tenacity against the odds. Remember that small little detail? I doubt SEGA does.
@HikariLover2021 and they’re brothers no less.
Nice how the translator wasn't even plot relevant.
apparantly in the japanese version it's the opposite that happens, tails says it's all thanks to sonic and then sonic corrects him by saying that tails did indeed help

I might be off-point but personally I think the reason why Sega hired new writers is because haters made fun of the writing back when the games first released. While the writing for the older games do get appreciated nowadays, Sega already made the decision to hire new writers.
I will doubt the writingstyle will change anytime soon, but at least we will probably get competent writers for that style now.
@Blackie Colors Ultimate won't change the story.
Tails was really brave when he needed to protect Cosmo
WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?!
Seriously though, I miss that character so much...
Couldn’t agree more, and also wow I never thought about that perspective on the unleashed cutscene, makes sense now, great job and great points on this video👌
Idk, it's not like Tails didn't face with monsters like that before (no, I'm not talking about Chaos)
No matter what Tails is like, how he sounds, how he acts, how he deals with things, I will always love him with all my heart.
4:33 You don't know HOW frustrating it was to see my favorite character in the series just shoved aside like that
Going to be totally honest, I don't think I really understand this argument.
As a bonus, here's how I would have everything after the boss is defeated and Sonic goes down to meet Tails play out:
Sonic, after Tails finds him: See buddy?
(high five or fist bump or something here)
Tails: Sorry for not helping you as much as I should have. Yacker had a lot to say. I promise I would have picked you up from every fall if I could have. (This line would be funny to see in the remaster, seeing as how he literally does that...)
Sonic: Speaking of Yacker...

I won't lose to you!" Tails
Sonic and Tails R (episode 7)
Nice eye pointing out that scene in Sonic Unleashed. Many people overlook that moment and state that's when Tails' character devolved when it's exactly how you explained 👏👌
People also forget that tails straight up went to go rob eggman, and lead a counter-assault to save the president against the black arms who had over whelming strength and numbers. Tails was a real badass between adventure 2, heroes, and shadow. I can't speak for 06 because I haven't played that.
Iizuka took Tails as being Sonic's sidekick too literally. Sonic kicks him to the side. He's just there to spout exposition and play on his tablet.
Me: reads the title
Also me: simple,
*Forces happened*
Can't believe they just undid Tails' character development from the dreamcast games.
Sonic Chronicles was the last game where Tails' character remained intact.
Plus it’s the debut Sonic game featuring the Pontac writing duo.
The joke is, the wisps are technically innocent. Sonic doesn't use any in Forces outside of the rare Teamstage, and people like tails STILL don't bother showing up in the actual level. At this point, it's all just screwed.
LPFan he uses the yacker wisp for boost
Classic.Tails: Able to Solo the entire Death Egg saga by himself. Equally valid option for a playthrough.
Modern Tails: Tech Support.
He needs to be playable again bottom line..like, its LONG over due..its apparently the only way to show his bravery..
Courage is not being afraid, courage is knowing you are afraid and understand you can't let it stop you from doing what needs to be done.
2:32 Sonicsta join’s the battle!
In that kind of scenario, Tails would only be thinking about how its all his fault and he let Sonic down, which leads into him getting Classic Sonic as a sort of second chance.
it kinda sucks having my favorite character be tails. i’d say he’s definitely been done the dirtiest out of the whole cast.
this ^
A negative character arc for Tails actually kind of makes sense. I mean, who wouldn't become super reliant if their surrogate big brother can literally take down gods.
This, right here
Huh so story wise it kind of makes sense.
Or you could reduce the Long explanation to Pontac and Graff have never played/watched a Sonic game so they have no clue about the History of Tails.
@KIAN Uh huh. Which explains why the line that Tails was going insane without Sonic was in the English version but not in the Japanese version.
I feel like Sega is ruining the characters.
Sega really massacred my favorite fox..and the worst part is, I used to see tails as a "Always believe in yourself" type of character. Now he's all "SONIC, HELP MEEE!!" like a coward he is now, unfortunately.
It feels like tails gained so much random fear ,going from sonic 2 where he just had a blank stare even fighting eggman then to becoming scared but gaining courage in sonic adventure to whatever unleashed through forces made
old tails: im gonna defeat a god with my bare hands

What I hate about Tails nowadays, is that he used to fight along side with Sonic as he used to be as a kid and now he's an adult 💀
I still love Tails, but really, they can do better with him
1:16 just, look at the generations trailer, the little tails just looks at the purple thing in the sky, he's not afraid of it, at least, not as much as his older him, that hides behind sonic like a coward, but definetly he is NOT like that
I was literally talking in VR Chat with a friend yesterday about this and I brought up every single point you did lmfao what a coincidence
is everyone forgetting how strong tails is Sonic Heroes?? i dont get why people complain about sonic having too many friends to play as.
Pontaff and the mandates happened. That’s how.
SEGAs fault for hiring them, and even then before the meta era, Tails was already ruined.
Having fears does not make one a coward, unless the script-writers are new.
This one word sums up about the main problem with Modern Sonic Games
*Flanderization*
This has happened to Crash Bandicoot, this happened to certain Mario games, this has also happened to many TV shows, Cartoons, and even anime
Whats interesting is how its reminiscent of the drama triangle; sonic is a rescuer, his attempts at rescuing tails infantilize him causing him to see himself as less capable and as more of a victim that needs saving
I hope the new writers can fix characters, and not only Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Amy, even sonic tbh
I agree but tails had it the worse
I’m crossing my fingers that the old tails and knuckles will show in the sonic movie 2 (as in their character traits and personalities)
Tails? Oh! You mean iPad fox.
If Sonic believed in Tails more and actually saw what he was capable of, there wouldn't be a concern.
Tails got the Gohan treatment.
its weird that luigi began as a coward and now he is kinda brave but tails is the total opposite
I....
Agree. I dont have any criticisms. You have very well explained what I love about tails. And excactly what sega did to him
Tails is too busy playing Fortnite on his iPad now
tails used to be kleiner. now hes just a hl1 scientist......
I think you managed to show me why I don't care that much for the story of any Sonic game past 2010: The characters most of the time act like they are just fladerized versions of themselves. Too bad, because the Sonic franchise is full of interesting characters and the comics usually bring more justice to them.
Tails when sonic "dies" in SA2 :TATAKAE
Tails when sonic "dies" in forces : HELP MEEEEE SONIIIIIIC
Honestly, I would've loved to see SEGA use that colours cutscene to explore Tails' characters.
I mean, imagine Tails being haunted by that moment and being shocked at how Sonic thought he couldn't stand up for himself, and whether he could really live up to being his friend. It would fit in Tails' character, whilst also being a natural progression of it without rewriting that scene.
Honestly, Modern Tails reminds me more of Luigi - They ramped up his fear to a comedic level. Even then, Luigi would at least build up courage over time whereas Tails is stagnant in his fear.
My criticism of Shadow is the fact they kept him after SA2. He belongs to that game, and that game alone.
Sonic 06 wants to know your location for wanting it to not have its best story campaign.
It's sad really luckily we have the idw comics giving tails and others there character back
Tails then: Isn't scared of battling Chaos 4
Tails now: Scared of Chaos 0
Love Tails and he’s one of my favorite characters
Pretty much every Sonic character has regressed in characterization. Literally the recent Sonic stories are so terrible and cheap it’s heartbreaking. I’m sick of the only thing going for Shadow is that he’s edgy, Tails is a smart coward, Knuckles is an idiot, Amy is an obsessed freak. It’s terrible.
i'd love it if i could play as him in the future
