I can't explain it... I have a microphone and know I'll probably never need another one... But I just can't say no... Once a podcastageer, always a podcastageer.
Damn, I dunno why I've been watching anyone else's equipment reviews - most of them aren't actually reviews, they're more like independent ads demonstrating features I could figure out by going to the product webpage. This is a real review with super-useful info - the comparison back to back of similar mics alone is gold, and I sure like the sound of the Rode, thank you. Also I enjoy how you seem both dead inside and to be having fun where you can - those chirpy, fake personas are sure grating.
Back in May, I went to a local music store to see if they had a particular Audio-Technica USB microphone in stock. The guy I talked to said they didn't, but he recommended this starter kit by Mackie (never heard of the brand before then) that had the mic in the video, a good pair of headphones, and a pair of studio monitor speakers. The kit was on sale at a fairly deep discount, so I bought it. Based on your review and my experience with the mic, it's nice to know I made a good investment.
The EM-USB is 'Zero-latency monitoring' microphone > Connect the EM-USB to your computer > then open the Control Panel and then the Sound Settings. In the playback and recording tabs, SET the EM-USB as default > now plug your headphones to the EM-USB Mic and slowly turn up the headphones volume. That's all, have fun with this awesome Mic!
There is actually a way to monitor yourself with windows. It’s a little hidden feature in audio that will route any mic you are using through your ears as well so you can hear yourself, and it’s very low latency in my experience.
Yo, this video is fantastic. I thought the Mackie sounded pretty good imo. I just ordered it for 79 bucks, so I'm really excited to get my hands on it. Also, as a fellow guitarist, I REALLY appreciated that you included some playing in your video. I was wondering what it would sound like, particularly with an acoustic guitar, I liked it. Great video man🤘
Excellent videos, I’ve been stuck on this channel for an hour now. The blue yeti has a nice sheen on the top end, but overall the Mackie EM has better body & soft highs, even sounds more warm than the AT, best I’ve seen so far!! Aside of the Mackie EM, are there any other warm USB mics with soft highs that I should look out for?
Friday the 13:th VI is the best. Thanks to your great reviews I didn’t buy this one, I went for the Blue Yeti that has a stereo pattern that seem to sound great on AG and piano. Keep posting reviews on any kind of pro audio stuff👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I can confirm this microphone does have latency free monitoring. You just need to activate the microphone properties in your computers sound settings. Time for a reappraise? Cheers Bandrew. All the best, Joe👍
Can you do a review of the Comica STM-...USB mic please, i was looking to upgrade from my headset mic soon and was considering spending the $120 on it.
I just bought this mic (partly based on this review which was very useful, thanks!). I like the sound of it, but the usb-c port isn't a true usb-c port. It works if you plug in the usb-c to usb-a cable and plug the usb-a end into a laptop or dock (one cable comes with the mic, or I've tried a generic usb-c to usb-a which works too) but it doesn't work from a usb-c to usb-c cable direct into my laptop. It's annoying for me because I'm trying to settle on usb-c for all of my devices and this didn't really help with that.
Great review ! I was thinking about buying the Blue Yeti mic sounded better. I had a Razer Siren that I returned and was looking for a mic for a while now. I recently bought the 10th anniversary edition and I'm liking it. I was disappointed to find out the Blue Voice software only works with the blue yeti x pro and gaming headset. Is there any software that does the same? Thanks!
I watch every single one of your reviews and I would like your suggestion. I currently use a samson c01u USB mic and want to upgrade to a xlr condenser with an audio interface, thinking of the behringer um202. I need a mic for singing vocals, my voice is a little bassy and gets muddy with the samson quite easily. What do you recommend for high clarity singing vocals in the range of the Behringer B1 or AT2020? AT2035 is unfortunately not available here. Multiple suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, would an audio interface provide zero latency monitoring with effects to headphones while singing? Thank you! Some tips on how to EQ would also be appreciated.. I just cut some frequencies in the low mid and boost the highs a bit.
I recently bought the em-usb to replace a samson q2u for my channel, stories shows. The q2u sounds good but I just really struggle with consistency. I record my shows in a living room but have since started re-recording the audio in my homemade audio booth. On a different video you provide a couple tips for condenser mics that was really helpful. I've just now started post processing audio, an almost foreign concept from one who has been in photography 20 plus years and made a few hundred videos. I'm hopeful I've reached the consistency level now, my best so far is One fish two fish red fish blue fish, following your tips/advice. Gotta go redo Pete the Kitten now, that one I got too close to the mic and I hear gross mouth sounds, definitely 6 inches for condenser. Thank you & peace b harmony
I am flattered that the videos were able to assist you in getting better sound out of your gear. I hope you have many years of great sounding recordings ahead of you.
Thank you for the great review! I bought this microphone for my daughter along with a boom arm. For $80 it’s nice! So glad I didn’t get a Blue Yeti for $100. 😅
Hi, I`m purchase the Mackie EM usb interface but the recording I made with it into Bandlab Cakewalk daw have been accelerated and distorted, could you tell me what could be the reason for this problem?? Thanks, best regards
This review is 2 years ago as when I wrote this. I found in electronic marketplace today that this very mic has 3.5 jack input at the bottom to direct-monitor what you say to the mic. Just FYI.
You should try Novox NC-1, one of the most popular USB mics in Poland (not produced in China or at least assembled in Poland), here it costs around $70
Could you do like a top 5 usb/xlr mic list? I see you test alot of mics and im pretty new to recording vocals/podcasting but theres so many keyboard warriors that will say one is good then scroll down to have 3 other people trash a product. Its pretty confusing and really frustrating. Im not gonna go out like you and test 10 different mics to see which one is best. Not like I know anything about mics. Thanks
Ok I have to ask....why is there a black box on the right side of the screen? Seriously this is throwing me off LOL Yeah I know it isn't mic related (or maybe it is) but now I am just staring at it....
I've watched some other reviews on this moc and apparently you can get headphone monitoring if you go into your sound/playback settings on your pc. Maybe Mac too?
In my experience the issue is that that won't be zero latency monitoring. You're hearing the audio after it's been sent to your computer and routed back to you. So there will be a very noticeable delay between when you speak and and when you hear it in your headphones, and for me that is extremely distracting.
Legitimate question. Have all the microphones you've been reviewing lately not come with stickers? Did the companies listen to you and stop providing them with their products? Or are you destroying them off-camera?
Seems a bit of a pity not to compare the AT2020USB given how ridiculously common and meh they are at the ~same money. (but ty for the informative and entertaining review ofc)
What microphone do you recommend as a plug and play for gamers? I have a mechanical keyboard but it has linear switches (Varmillo Sakura v2) so they aren’t super loud. I used an xlr set up with a phantom power supply and just wasn’t a fan of all the extra cables.
Is Cheryl no longer a problem? I haven't heard any songs about her awfulness in a while and at one point he wasn't even throwing boxes because of the noise it makes.
She ended up shooting a gun into my house (i wasn’t home at the time). So now I have the upper hand. Also, I bought an isolation cab so the guitar is nearly silent.

It sounds better than all of the other USB microphones you put it against (in my opinion) and I thought that for spoken word especially, it sounded quite pleasing. However, the lack of 0ms Direct Monitoring is really confusing. I can't seem to understand why they would leave this feature out.

I’ve got a sterling condenser mic. I’ve had it for about 2 years. Anytime I speak into it every word creates a peaking...popping/crackling sound. I don’t know if my microphone is busted, if I need a new cable or if there’s a problem with my interface. Any help or advise is appreciated
WAG: You might have interface input gain turned up too high and possibly are talking straight into the mic without any kind of pop filter, hence resulting in massive clipping on each pop? If so, try positioning the mic about 45 degrees off axis from your mouth (but still pointing at it) and see what kind of recording levels an approximately 1 o'clock input gain setting gets you. Note: If your interface has an extra software input gain control, this may have a useless range where only digital attenuation is provided. Make sure a badly overloaded input will clip at approx. -1 dBFS (most interfaces should get there, for the Behringer UMCxxxHD series it'll be more like -3 dBFS though). I have seen more than one case where you can just leave it at 100% and forget about it, though the best setting may also be in random other spots (right-clicking the number field and selecting dB view may clear this up - go for a 0 dB setting). The combination of all of the above could easily give the kind of results you describe. If there is one iron rule in digital recording it is that you must not clip your ADC under normal circumstances. There is no way of recovering from it. Modern ADCs offer so much dynamic range that a low input level is way less of a problem... even with a basic interface, you should lose very little S/N ratio if recording levels are peaking at -20 dB and brought up in software afterwards, or even -30 dB for a higher-grade input.
You’re the reason I can’t stop watching microphone videos lol
Big fan here dude ☺️ keep up the good work !
