I definitely like the sound of the MV7 more than all the mics you compared it too, with the sole exception being the SM7b. That being said, I definitely think that the MV7 will make people think twice before spending at least an additional $150 on the SM7b, when you can get a Shure dynamic mic that sounds extremely good for $250 instead of $400.
Thanks to your reviews, I ended up purchasing the MV7. I have been using it now over a year for gaming, and some singing and it sounds great for someone like me. The only issue now is that the USB input on the mic is very loose and disconnects often, or doesn't correctly make contact causing an error. It could just be my fault but I think mics are moved often and shouldn't be that sensitive.
That's a great piece of information. Sorry that's happening with yours and it shouldn't occur after just one year of use. I think that's why a lot of people disliked the decision to use micro-usb, because it does get loose like that. Maybe it's still under warranty from Shure.
Great Review. I am convinced to buy it. From price point of view, i think its a bit high for new/hobbyist podcasters. The XLR option is great makes it future-proof for newbies. Definitely better sounding than Blue Yeti, Samson and Rode NT1 USB
Thank you for trying to test the microphone without being "influenced". The Shure MV7 without the sponge is a bit weird. It reminds me a bit of when I was young and I see Robocop without his helmet. Maybe it will be good to prepare an episode with microphones that are not really dedicated to the Podcast, but which can give a good result (like some Shotgun microphones).
The Shure MV7 sounds very nice and warm even using it in “usb mode”. I think this is a great mic for the price point. People can use it through usb for awhile. Then later on, they have the option to switch to XLR if they want a touch higher quality and more opportunity with a mixer. Great review by the way!
The embargo was lifted yesterday, that's why it's all over UA-cam. The way Bandrew makes his in-depth videos takes a very long time to film and edit, so it's safe to say he's had this microphone for a week, if not more. Bandrew's review was probably the most anticipated of all.
Been watching quite a lot of your background noise dynamic videos and sounds like this one is the winner. it has the style of the SM7B without the price tag, and with it sounding so good in USB mode, it cuts the costs of needing the extra hardware right away if ever. For doing voiceover work this seems like the winner. Wish it was around when I got my Rode NT USB but then I had no idea how important dynamic mics were for my specific use case For 250 it's a worthy investment that's not going to break the bank for mid range content creators who do talking head and voice overs.
Kudos! I have watched several of your reviews of usb microphones and I have ALL the information! Your reviews are second to none! Hands down the best reviews on the web! You cover all the bases! Thank you!
Everyone here has watched all the mv7 videos. We all waited for his video and know he is the GOAT of mic reviews. Once I saw this video it helped so much. Love this guy
thank you for doing the 360 so we can hear what it sounds like from different angles. a lot of people dont do this but its like one of the main things i need to know, ty
An insider view is the product probably started dev a while ago and dragged along until marketing finally made up their mind to release it, and then jammed it into production. Change to USB C and miss the release window (again) or leave it be and we'll revise it later, which for Shure will not be anytime soon.
I really like how you did this review using USB instead of XLR. Edit: They used MicroUSB on the mic since the mic uses USB 2.0 so there is no benefit of the USB-C port, though they did include a MicroUSB to USB-C cable so modern computers can still connect with an adapter. USB-C would have been very nice but in terms of improvement, it does nothing to change the quality of the mic. This mic is in a weird spot for me. $250 seems steep. Feels like it should be $200 or around $175. At $250, you can buy a RODE PodMic for $99 and have $150 to spend on a good audio interface. Yet, this mic has USB (which can be used at the same time as XLR) so it already works on everything and sounds pretty good. If you ever wanted to upgrade to an audio interface in the future, you don't need to buy a new mic to get better sound. Because of that, I'm probably going to end up buying it in the coming months. I want to rid of my Blue Yeti but don't want to drop hundreds on a good Mic and interface just yet. It has many use cases, especially for people who stream using two computers as this once microphone can be used on both at the same time. When you take away the sound and look at the mic from a hardware/software perspective, it's a very good deal. Still a bit steep at $250 but I would say it's worth it.
The PodMic comparison was the most striking, I think because it came right after all the USB mics which did sound much worse, when he got to that I was immediately like "$100, sounds just as good". Combined with the fact that it did sound worse to me too with XLR, using a good interface, this is not as versatile as you might hope. Still I think the price and features will make it a good choice for a lot of use cases.
@@BCThunderthud I think the podmic is really good but somebody like me doesn't have an audio interface already so if I bought the podmic, I would still end up paying $200+ in total for both parts. In my mind, I can spend that money and get a good mic and in the future when I'm ready to buy an interface, I don't have to upgrade mics. Best of both worlds without breaking the bank upfront. If people already have an interface, then I would defiantly go podmic 100% and save $150.
Now this is a proper review video. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Its so nice to see a proper review covering all the bases and not just some dude talking "directly" into the mic not covering anything else. Awesome.
I was relieved to hear the SM7b in the shootout. XLR/USB combo microphones seem like the greatest idea ever, but they’re all very understandably targeted at the entry level and is reflected in the sound.
Amazing review, thank you so much for making this! My favorite was the SM7b and then the MV7, Procaster and SM58 are all close. I do think though that the Shure ones sound better for your voice compared to the Rode ones but that is entirely subjective. Thank you for going through all the settings and through all those tests, it was very comprehensive. It's not like I'm gonna buy it but I enjoy a good quality sound and your reviews deliver that, plus music, plus character so it's a nice package. Wish you all the best, keep doing what you love no matter what.
Sounds pretty good and I'm happy you compared it to the PodMic like a few others have. So far it doesn't seem like there's a good reason for me to replace my PodMic. It still sounds solid. Like you said, I feel this is mostly for people who want this type of mic but with a USB output.
Thank You for reviewing this mic I bought it after a blue yeti where people would complain about hearing the computer fans this mic rejects the fan sound so no complaints and they say they can hear me better I'm using a boom arm
I really hope you take care of yourself and not feel too bad in the current situation. I'm also very thankful for all your videos and the amount of work that you put into them! Sending you lots of love from Poland!
Very thorough review! I've been using the MV7 for almost 2 months now with usb and it sounded awesome as is, the shure motiv app is great at keeping things simple, and just a few days ago finally got a scarlett focusrite to use in xlr, it's a great mic and love that it is upgradeable in that aspect Just a scratching my head a bit due to the mount options, the only shock mounts I could see for this is a top hanging shock mount
As always great content and great comparison, I loved this video. Now this may be why I’m not a musician but to me this mic sounded eerily close to the sm7b almost too close and for half the price with both XLR and USB functionality for seemingly upgradability (from usb to xlr) etc. in all honesty to me there was almost no notable difference.
Thanks for this detailed review, Podcastage! I retained my firefighter gear from year ago and retrieve it from the basement each year so it can serve as my Halloween outfit. Happy Halloween! I pivoted from a Blue Yeti (for the past 7 years) to a Shure MV7. I use the USB interface. I perceive the MV7 as a significant audio-quality upgrade over my YETI. I only use the microphone for speech. However, plosives were an immediate problem with the MV7. After watching other YT reviews and reading forums, I largely resolved that issue my purchasing and installing the foam windscreen for the MV7B. It's part number Shure RK345 and is made to fit the SM7, SM&A, and SM7B. It was $15 from B & H photo. The RK345 has thicker foam in the area that fits over the top of the mic. Visually, the MV7 looks more professional in my podcasts and professional videos. It also fit like a charm on my RODE PSA1 boom arm. I've been very happy with the Shure MV7 for podcasting and recording instructional videos.
The Rode Procaster sounds great for that broadcast sound. I feel like the podmic sounds very natural and is a great buy for $99. The podmic doesn't really work on Bandrews voice though because he sounds better with a little bit of the low end broadcast boom from the SM7B. If you have a deeper voice the podmic is a steal.
Amazing, in-depth review. After scouring youtube for good reviews of microphones I think I finally found a reviewer to stick with. You’re great, articulate and to the point! I’m currently looking for a great mic to do voice overs in an untreated room and it seems that the landscape of USB mics has changed a lot since MV7 was released. There’s Samson, the NT1 has usb-c now and I would LOVE to see a review of the new Deity VO-7U. It has a hardware analog limiter which MV7 lacks.
Thanks for a solid review as always, Bandrew. This was the one I was waiting to watch to get the gold standard review. Detailed and full-featured as always! Many thanks.
@@Podcastage for s(h)ure! I still have to get used to processing it though as it is so different from the mic included with the Focusrite studio bundle!
Good stuff. I knew you had to have one too so I was looking forward to hearing your take. I thought it sounded better than the other dynamic USBs and pretty darn close to the 7B and even 58. I've got mine on the boom for the foreseeable future as there's no doubt I'll have more question to answer;)
28:32 - I'm not doing anything for Halloween. However, I did once go to a Disney party dressed as Prince Charming ... and everyone mistook me for Dracula. Seriously xD
By far the best video on the Shure MV7 - nice work! Your attention to detail is impressive. The mic sounds surprisingly similar to the SM7b - was plosives the main difference you noticed in the sound?
It's rather close but for ~$250 the Rode Procaster just sounds like the better buy (to my ears) unless USB is a requirement. I do like that there's more USB + XLR options on the market, though!
Actually comparing hes review, Podmic sounds way better then just get a Yamaha AG3 if you want some extra DSP on-board FXs. since combining it all, it will cost you the same as that mic.
They can be bought in UK for about £150 as oppose to £255 for this shure mic. Not an opinion on which one I like more/less but that is a considerable price difference.
Thank you for the thorough review. I just purchased the Shure MV7 and I really enjoy it. My dang old XLR cable was causing some feedback -- so I picked up a new one and it works perfectly!
Just heard about this mic from a colleague yesterday and immediately searched for your review haha! I think I must have searched a few hours too early cuz here it is!
This is an excellent through review and mic comparison. Budget is a factor I'll look at one of the other mics the audio quality sounds the same if not better for a few. I will be listening to this a few times to make a final decision. Thank you so much!
Great video as always Bandrew. Quick question? You had the gain for the MV7 using the XLR set to 100% on your interface. Is the the MV7 as gain hungry as the SM7B or the Procaster? Would a cloud lifter or a fethead make a significant difference to the xlr quality?
I don't think I have ever seen such a great comparison. It is basically how I want it to be. Maybe, actually mount the microphones you compare with to have a more stable sound, but that is basically my only complaint. Thank you so much!

Looked for your video as soon as I heard about the mic, and here it is! Thanks for this!
Does anyone else say the plosive test phrase with Bandrew like me? 😂😂 'Please bring pizza pronto'
Definitely
I always think to myself "I really want pizza now"
I think he needs to add “Alexa”, “Siri”, or “Hey Google” to the start of the sentence :).
Podmic $100 is still my best choice, Thank you for reviewed.
Yeah, that's my go-to phrase for plosives test.
Very thorough review! I've been using the MV7 for almost 2 months now with usb and it sounded awesome as is, the shure motiv app is great at keeping things simple,
and just a few days ago finally got a scarlett focusrite to use in xlr, it's a great mic and love that it is upgradeable in that aspect
Just a scratching my head a bit due to the mount options, the only shock mounts I could see for this is a top hanging shock mount
I think that’s a pretty fair analysis.
I'm loving my Rode PodMic, it's been a great purchase for me!
When you zoomed in on your chin I died 😂 great video!
one of the best review videos i've ever watched
22:25 I have been wondering this as well! Thank you for saying it!
Look for both xlr and usb for long time, now it seem I have good choice.I am using sm7b and love it. Mv7 will be my second choice
Wondering how this going to compare with Elgato Wave 3.
Thanks for a solid review as always, Bandrew. This was the one I was waiting to watch to get the gold standard review. Detailed and full-featured as always! Many thanks.
Just got my Sm7B after a month of waiting :) Sounds great and of all these mics I think it is the best (but I might be biased :P)
I love me that SM7b as well!
@@Podcastage for s(h)ure! I still have to get used to processing it though as it is so different from the mic included with the Focusrite studio bundle!
@@Podcastage what is the best app to use to get good real-time post processing. I am running the SM7b out of the Motu M2 with cloudlifter in-line.
@@Mosamania free voice meter at limited capacity. 60 dollar with daw: Reaper. Easiest to configure 200 dollar gig performer.
The minute I saw the MV7 pop up on Google news I got stoked for your review. Thanks, Bandrew!
So I can use the USB and just plug this mic directly into my PC (all in one PC) and have it work and sound good? Nice
Just came here to say, this videos are Amazing, they are quick and go straight into the point
Good stuff. I knew you had to have one too so I was looking forward to hearing your take. I thought it sounded better than the other dynamic USBs and pretty darn close to the 7B and even 58. I've got mine on the boom for the foreseeable future as there's no doubt I'll have more question to answer;)
thanks for taking the time to create this review, its been helpful
28:32 - I'm not doing anything for Halloween. However, I did once go to a Disney party dressed as Prince Charming ... and everyone mistook me for Dracula.
Seriously xD
That’s hilarious! Well done Mat!
The way he threw that box was so cool!
By far the best video on the Shure MV7 - nice work! Your attention to detail is impressive. The mic sounds surprisingly similar to the SM7b - was plosives the main difference you noticed in the sound?
Thank you for the exhaustive comparisons. Very helpful overall.
The time needed to edit this terrifies me. You have all of my respect.
I’ll stick with my Procaster until I win the lottery and can afford to get the Neumann U 87 Ai
Thank you for the thorough review. I just purchased the Shure MV7 and I really enjoy it. My dang old XLR cable was causing some feedback -- so I picked up a new one and it works perfectly!
I lost interest when I seen the micro-USB port 😀 Come on Shure, get with the program.
Just heard about this mic from a colleague yesterday and immediately searched for your review haha! I think I must have searched a few hours too early cuz here it is!
Proximity effect really doesn't sound good on this version
Any recommendations for a one ear headset for everyday use? i use the Jabra 550 UC Mono but it usually wears out after a year.
interesting seeing you here
Fantastic run through Bandrew 👍
