Rose of Ultramarine is possibly my favorite hue of any color, perhaps only rivaled with a phthalo turquoise. I finally bought it and added it to my palette a while back, but sadly never find myself using it with my subject matter 💔
I love using the Rose of Ultramarine for backgrounds, as the colours are subtle and adds really nice texture. I know backgrounds are your bug bear tho so it might to be fun to use it in this way. It's so gorgeous anyways
The price difference likely comes in because PV19 is a much stronger pigment that requires a small amount of pigment compared to binder to create a working paint. Both paints likely have a similar amount of PV19, but ultramarine blue requires a much greater pigment to binder ratio, and so to create as drastic of a change in hue, a fair bit more PB29 is required.
i actually love that imperial purple. I though rose of ultramarine would win out with me because it was love at first sight, but that delicate lavender colour in imperial purple has stolen my heart. Not to mention i feel like getting imperial purple to colour more like RoU would be easier than the opposite, although honestly you could do both either way easily.
I absolutely loved them both!!! If I had to choose, I would pick the Imperial Purple first because it's purple and I'm just naturally drawn to those first. So far I'm not a huge fan of color mixing so I'm happy to have all the convenience colors I want. If only my pocketbook would agree!!!
In just two videos you've somehow convinced me to purchase the Rose of Ultramarine and Moonglow that have been sitting in my cart for AGES ^_^ That Ultramarine Violet mix looks amazing. Love the showdown videos - paints you choose to compare are usually the ones already in my cart so :D Really helping me with purchasing decisions here, thanks!
Will do. Not sure where I'll incorporate either one in my paintings, but hey that's the part of the fun :D I'll think of a series of paintings JUST for these colors maybe. These and Cascade Green. Daniel Smith is dangerous for my wallet...
Daniel Smith paints are so expensive, but I feel like I get more joy out of them per dollar/pound I spend than any other brands. Would love to see your colour-themed series!
Oh that's a great way to suppress my watercolor-guilt - measure my purchases with joy! Such small things get me excited sometimes - like I love the shape of Schmincke 15ml tubes and it makes me so happy to own them. Feels like I stumbled upon the watercolor-collector support group in this part of UA-cam :D
oh yes I love Schmincke 15ml tube's lids. They are so much better than most tube lids. The Sennelier's tube lids are the worst for me. Yes you are totally amongst the watercolor-collector support group here! :D
As you have said, it is very easy to mix the two colours. I have a lot of ultramarine that I don't know what to do with since it comes with all the palettes that I have and I feel like something like a rose madder or a similar colour to quinacridone rose will make a beautiful purple with the same blue granulation. It doesn't feel like it would be necessary for me to purchase either since these colours, for me, are used sparingly.
The series ratings are hard to understand with these two. Perhaps it's that they use French Ultramarine for this mix? I think that one's a series 2 as well. The gauze effects and the color mixes are lovely ♥
I was going to suggest that as well, the french ultramarine is series 2. We also have to keep in mind that there are SO many versions of PV19 so they could have used a series 1 variant.
So. Many. Possibilities..... So little info to go by! I agree, it can be any of those things, or even something else. I still don't think it's worth paying the extra money for Imperial Purple when the Rose of Ultramarine is so beautiful.
Thank you for making super-informative and beautiful video. I got all the answers I needed (and some inspiration as a bonus). It's usually so confusing, trying to predict how the color will look like. You channel is a life-saver! I'm very grateful for the work that you do.
Imperial Purple is on my extended palette I use for florals. I use the imperial purple for Iris (which I think you mentioned) and I use is for shadows on pink or red flowers. (the pink hinting through helps pull it together). Great comparison. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the comparison, Oto! Very informative and a pleasure to watch. I bought Rose of Ultramarine for a background of one of the illustrations I was painting for a children's book. It performed exactly as I hoped it would and the color was gorgeous. I usually shy away from using granulating colors because of the type of illustrations I do, but these illustrations called for texture in the backgrounds, which gave me an excuse to go shopping to find some granulating watercolor! ;-) The 5ml tube of Rose of Ultramarine will last me a long time, so I don't think I'll need Imperial Purple any time soon--Rose of Ultramarine is easy to tint cooler if need be.
Ok, so I love your videos and how informative they are, but... ...now, so far, I want Moonglow, Rose of Ultramarine and also Imperial Purple and both greens! So I guess only Shadow Violet is the one that can wait longer. LOL I don't think I need more paints because I don't even really know how to paint, but I keep falling in love with all the colors the more I see them and learn about them! I'm in trouble! Besides, my favorite color is purple (well, and teal) so that makes me so biased towards both of these.
I have both. I like rose for painting flowers and purple for the night sky. But know how to mix both I will the future just try to have a single pigment. I really enjoy your video. Thanks
so happy to hear that you are enjoying these videos. Thank you for letting me know. Yes the Rose is so so beautiful. Never thought of painting a night's sky with the purple tho, so thank you for the suggestion.
I love this series that you are doing, and I love HOW you do it. Love reading the comment sections too. Lot's to learn! I have had the imperial purple in my cart on a weekly basis yet when I go to order I take it out for another color. Now I can finally make a decision and not yearn for it, lol, I love the R of U and that's plenty enough for me, I'll just mi up the purple. Thank you!!!
Everyone in the comments sections have been so kind in sharing their extensive knowledge on these colours. I have learnt so much from them. So glad this video could help you make a firm, informed decision!
I wanted Imperial Purple for the tone and shade that I thought it would be. I currently have Rose of Ultramarine (from the DS half pan tin set) but after that’s used up I’ll stick to Quin. Rose and Ultramarine Blue and mix them in a half pan myself if I’m still fond of that color. Very handy to know that gradient from those two so a big thank you for that one. I already knew which would have more PB29 for example but it is so useful to know where on the mixes spectrum I “currently” am when I am mixing this one and to know roughly how more of either pigment I’ll need and maybe even opted for the middle ground or whatever. It gives extra information so extra value, inspiration and extra fun!
this is a great series! I have the rose of ultramarine, but after watching this i think i would get the imperial. but I can easielly make it and you saved me the money of having to get another similar color.
Rose of Ultramarine mixed with Dan's Ultramarine is so stunning! I think that's my favourite mix of them all. And yes, I totally agree with you -- Rose of Ultramarine with Ultramarine Violet is definitely a dupe for Imperial Violet! I recently used so much Rose of Ultramarine in a piece that's it's literally ridiculous. I think I got some of my obsessing over it out of my system. A little bit, anyway. But I'll forever love it and it's always going to be one of my favourite paints!
Adding to my previous comment... I just watched your episode on gauzing so you can disregard my original question. Thank you so much for all your experimenting and information!
I give up 😭 maybe I'm simple in the head, but I find I use Imperial Purple more than diox violet (unless it's QoR and I need that "black purple" that can't be replicated). I took to Imp Purple immediately last year, but not to a sample of RoU, as the latter seemed "dull". But yesterday I caved (to pressure from a family watercolourist) and I got a whole fat tube of RoU, and perhaps it's that I'm still new to wc (just over a year), and definitely user error, but I find RoU so difficult to 'control'. I'm still working with it, but TO ME it seems like a decent "pink" with surprise blues that I can't control at all. Like, it's not "mixed". (The old sample I had was the same way, so I'm assuming this is the intended effect.) I (thankfully) don't get that color separation with imperial purple unless I push it, and more often I get a subtle "rose glow" if I've got great water control (and if I don't, it lifts so easily!) ITA imp purple is just pale purple and the separation isn't so "in your face" (which for me means, "hard to control"). And it's a tad "crayola color" purple hue, which sometimes I don't want. But I enjoy working with it when I have to (especially for sunsets and some animals/fish that don't need to read "purple"; it's not hard to tone down at all. I might give the RoU to my sister, though I think she'd bop me on the head for being a neophyte painter 🤕😂 (I blew my paint budget bad this month. Ouch.) But anyway yes, I'm fond of Imp Purple. I'm hoping to find a dupe in Schminke or another brand (so I can "protest" DS just a little bit for the Primafakes 😂 "Genuine Phthalo Green" _with some dirt and mica_ )
Wow. My first chance to see this video. Love it. Thank you so much. What is that gauzing that you use? I have never seen this effect yet. Now a subscriber! You’re right those colors are easily mixed.
I would pick Rose of Ultramarine, it is a lovely color. I've been mixing Quin Rose & Ultra Marine (or sometimes Holbien bright violet & ultramarine) to get my purple and I just ordered DS Quin Purple. I'd love to see a compare between Quin Purple and Imperial Purple. I love the gauze effects. do you adhere it to the paper with watercolor ground? Or do you lift it off... I've never used it.
Love the comparison! For once I have both of these colors. RoU is beautiful but I've had a hard time figuring out what I want to do with it so it lost its place on my palette. IP is easier to work with I'd say. It also is great for floral paintings.
Oooh, backgrounds would be lovely with RoU. The separation in RoU makes me not want to use it often because I'm worried it'll ruin a painting. IP is reliable and consistent. I tend to like purple flowers the most and IP tends to be spot on. But I've never used dioxazine purple before, which is why IP is my go to. IP was actually the first purple paint I picked up and it worked so I didn't wander far.
To me, it looked as if the mix of Imperial Purple and Quin. Violet makes something akin to Rose of Ultramarine. Since I love the Imperial Purple the most, I would keep it and Quin Violet on my palette.
I have rose of ultramarine and I love it. There imperial purple washes out to a lovely lilac that would be perfect for flowers but because in easily mix that color, thanks Oto, I won't be buying it.
Yay! Color Showdown! 🤜🏿💥🤛🏿 I have been curious about these two for a while but I always stayed away because I thought I could probably mix them fairly easily. Looks like I can! So for me think I’ll pass on them, even though the colors are so pretty. Thanks for another great comparison!
Hello Dr Oto Kano, I have a question. For colours like the Rose of Ultramarine and Phthalo Turquiose, which are known mixes, can't an individual artist just pour the original paints (Phthalo Blue n Green to make Turquoise) and mix them up and let dry in a halfpan? Whats the advantage of buying such convenience tubes VS 'premixing' on our own? I know the hues wouldn't be exact to the store bought ones, but one can adjust to their personal taste that way. Whats your take?
Dr. Oto Kano Great video! Im wondering though, what is the difference between French ultramarine blue and ultramarine blue, and would this work mixing quin rose with French ultramarine blue? Or does it need to be ultramarine blue to get the rose of ultramarine and imperial purple colors?
You mentioned in one of your videos something about aureolin yellow, but I cannot for the life of me remember. I had a feeling there was something bad about it, but not 100% sure. Is it an ok colour? I just like the look of the shade xxxx
What I still haven't understood: could you again explain please, how you decide what colors on the right you use for the mixes? You said, you choose them by the color wheel ... but I am still not clear, how you choose the Quinacridone Violets, Rose etc. - how do I know where on the "color wheel" these are located?
Yes of course! I'm sorry that I didn't explain it better. To be honest, I just picked out colours that I had on my palette that was a good range of colours so you can get a general impression of how the particular paint in focus looks with a lot of colours. Sorry I couldn't be more thorough in planning the colours. I just had to start somewhere with what I already had.
Maybe imperial purple uses French ultramarine blue rather than regular ultramarine hence the price difference. And as we know both Quin rose and French ultramarine are series 2 colors
wow this one's a real head scratcher, I like the look of both colours, Rose of ultramarine looks beautiful. The imperial purple reminds me of manganese violet or a muted dioxenzine. flip a coin to pick which one? I'm really liking the music in your videos!
aw thank you! I can send you a wee sample of both if you want to try some for yourself? I maaaaaay have been planning a secret palette to send you anyway....
Thank you for making this series! I like learning more about the properties DS watercolours. I havent watched enough of the series yet to know if you have tried bleach or vinegar, and if perhaps you might consider seeing how they work together... On another note, I think the reason the imperial purple is more expensive because the ultramarine is made of lapis lazuli...unfortunately i dont know enough about the other pigment...is it chemically made? It could be that it is more readily available that way...
Interesting :) Wonderful, thank you :) I have only the Rose of Ultramarine. I wonder also what is the (plastic) mesh that you put on the paper and then paint? Where can I buy it?
It's just a quick thing I knocked up for this series. I've explained what each thing is in episode 1 of the series ua-cam.com/video/w2tnJ_Gl0t4/v-deo.html
I feel like the Roman Szmal Aquarius color Mineral Violet might be sort of a dupe for Imperial Violet, but I’d have to look back at the pigment info. Really pretty colors. I’d probably use one of these sorts of colors to mix something similar to Moonglow, but lightfast.
Another couple of beautiful colors. I think your final choice is correct as you could easily make the second by adding more PB29 :) Beautiful colors and great vid!
I just love this series... my bank account isn’t so happy about it, but hey what does an account know anyway! I love the way the gauze reacts but what can you use that pattern for? Also do you happen to have any idea when they announce and new colors for this year or any they will retire??
Well this is an old video and I know you kinda don't like oranges hahahahaha but I would love a Color Showdown with Pyrrol Orange (PO73) and Perinone Orange (PO43)
I feel like you’ve just been slowly exposing my Daniel Smith palette, because so far almost all the colors you’ve compared are ones that I have. =>.>= you’re going to expose both of our Daniel Smith “problems” at the same time, I think. I think they both mixed beautifully with all the colors! But I’m also offended by very few colors because my black, rotten heart is secretly full of rainbows. =>.
lmao yes I do absolutely have a DS problem!! I am not surprised that the colours I have covered you already have, because I love the colours you use. We must have similar taste in colour. ohhh I haven't tried the Diaxozine or the amethyst yet. I have carbazole purple at the mo on the palette. I know I got it for a specific reason, but now I can't for the life of me remember what for...
oh yes, deep rich colours, and bright colours are my palette too! I'm not sure yet how I feel about sparkly paints for my work, not sure if it's going to be too distracting from the rest or not yet. WIll have to experiment a bit!
Oto Kano frankly, I think I don’t really like the sparkle of the amethyst because it doesn’t really add too much in-person, and the effect is completely lost when digitized. So aside from the sort of muted color itself being nice, it’s not really worth it for the sparkle.
Winsor &Newton: Winsor Lemon, Antwerp Blue, French Ultramarine Scarlet Lake, Yellow Ochre Light Permanent Rose Rembrandt: Mauve Sennerlier: Burnt Sienna, Permanent Carmine, Indanthrene Blue Daler Rowney : Nickel Titanate Yellow, New Gamboge, Neutral Tint, DanielSmith: Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Jadeite Genuine Moonglow, Perylene Green, Green Apatite Genuine, Quin Coral, Kyanite Genuine Cerulean Blue Chromium Schmincke Horadam: Paris Blue And two that change from week to week :)
I have ultramarine purple… it’s ok…. I find myself playing around with the ratio of the two pigments anyway. Ultimately, it’s not worth it if you have ultramarine and quin rose anyway.

Love the showdown videos - paints you choose to compare are usually the ones already in my cart so :D Really helping me with purchasing decisions here, thanks!
ha ha ha YES! I love to enable paint buying, mwahahaha. You have picked two very lovely colours, please let me know how you get on with it.

So. Many. Possibilities..... So little info to go by! I agree, it can be any of those things, or even something else. I still don't think it's worth paying the extra money for Imperial Purple when the Rose of Ultramarine is so beautiful.
Quin rose is series 2 and rose of ultramarine has a higher ratio of quin rose so maybe that's why it's series 2.
Yes I love using the Rose of Ultramarine for backgrounds too. Doesn't it make the most gorgeous, soft, subtle backgrounds? Love it so much
Ok, so I love your videos and how informative they are, but...
...now, so far, I want Moonglow, Rose of Ultramarine and also Imperial Purple and both greens! So I guess only Shadow Violet is the one that can wait longer. LOL I don't think I need more paints because I don't even really know how to paint, but I keep falling in love with all the colors the more I see them and learn about them! I'm in trouble! Rose of Ultramarine mixed with Dan's Ultramarine is so stunning! I think that's my favourite mix of them all. And yes, I totally agree with you -- Rose of Ultramarine with Ultramarine Violet is definitely a dupe for Imperial Violet!

wooooooo do we get to see the Rose of Ultramarine drenched piece? It must be so beautiful!
Yes! Drenched is definitely the word for it. 💜 Very soooon~
She didn't show Rose with Dan's Ultra.. that was Schmenks....
pesto12601 On the charts, the second row and last paint says PenholderArtUK, which is Dan's brand of Ultramarine Blue.
LOl.. I thought "Dan" was referring to Daniel Smith... not Dan Penholder (I never heard of him!)... sorry... and thx!
Adding to my previous comment... I just watched your episode on gauzing so you can disregard my original question. Thank you so much for all your experimenting and information!

I wonder if the imperial purple used a different variant of pv19? That pigment can go from lighter pink to a purple.
Wow. My first chance to see this video. Love it. Thank you so much. What is that gauzing that you use? I have never seen this effect yet. Now a subscriber! You’re right those colors are easily mixed.
Thanks! It was very useful review of colors. You saved my money🙏

I love using RoU for backgrounds. Love the subtle colours and the gentle texture it adds. What do you use the IP for?
Oooh, backgrounds would be lovely with RoU. The separation in RoU makes me not want to use it often because I'm worried it'll ruin a painting. IP is reliable and consistent. I tend to like purple flowers the most and IP tends to be spot on. But I've never used dioxazine purple before, which is why IP is my go to. IP was actually the first purple paint I picked up and it worked so I didn't wander far.
I would have appreciated if you had compared imperial purple with cobalt violet deep. Is it possible you might do that?
Very detailed and nice comparison, thanks for the research :)
You are so welcome! So glad it is useful to you. Thank you.
Rose of Ultra marine is on my palate. It such a beautiful color!
To me, it looked as if the mix of Imperial Purple and Quin. Violet makes something akin to Rose of Ultramarine. Since I love the Imperial Purple the most, I would keep it and Quin Violet on my palette.
I would have to go for rose of ultramarine. Both are beauties, however.
I love this series so much! I haven't even watched it yet but the Virgo in me is already hitting Like because she's an organizational freak.
Ha ha ha thank you so much for the thumbs up!
So well done!
I have rose of ultramarine and I love it. There imperial purple washes out to a lovely lilac that would be perfect for flowers but because in easily mix that color, thanks Oto, I won't be buying it.
So glad I could save you some money to buy other paints :D
Rose of ultramarine seems great! Maybe someday. Thanks.
Yes, especially with you preferring single pigments in your palette, I would say mix rather than own :)
I love both!
Perhaps the Imperial Purple uses French Ultramarine? It is a series 2 pigment. Lovely colors and mixes as always!
You mentioned in one of your videos something about aureolin yellow, but I cannot for the life of me remember. I had a feeling there was something bad about it, but not 100% sure. Is it an ok colour? I just like the look of the shade xxxx
genuine Aureolin fades a lot, in like a greyish like color
I would choose Roman Szmal's mineral violet! It's the same pigments but I like it better than either of these.
It's just a standard gauze you can get from the pharmacy :)
Rose of ultramarijne is one of my favorite colors.
What template do you use in minute 2:00 please? Need such a template for swatching, too ... have you anywhere explained it yet?
It's just a quick thing I knocked up for this series. I've explained what each thing is in episode 1 of the series ua-cam.com/video/w2tnJ_Gl0t4/v-deo.html
ah I see, thank you, great idea!!
Very helpful! Thank you!
Wonderful job...Tfs😃
Another couple of beautiful colors. I think your final choice is correct as you could easily make the second by adding more PB29 :) Beautiful colors and great vid!
Thank you! So glad you like these colours too.
What brand is the square paper you use in the middle swatch labeled "Rough" ?
I just love this series... my bank account isn’t so happy about it, but hey what does an account know anyway! I love the way the gauze reacts but what can you use that pattern for? Also do you happen to have any idea when they announce and new colors for this year or any they will retire??
Well this is an old video and I know you kinda don't like oranges hahahahaha but I would love a Color Showdown with Pyrrol Orange (PO73) and Perinone Orange (PO43)
The main difference as far as I am concerned is that Imperial Purple is only available in the large tube...so much more expensive to experiment with
I feel like you’ve just been slowly exposing my Daniel Smith palette, because so far almost all the colors you’ve compared are ones that I have.
Oto Kano funnily enough, carbazole violet looks like it’s the one o was thinking of. =>...
oh yes, deep rich colours, and bright colours are my palette too!
I have Rose of Ultramarine . It is beautiful but it is not among my top 24

On my screen the ROU comes much patchy than IP. Skip the price difference then I'll take Imperial purple.
I have ultramarine purple… it’s ok…. I find myself playing around with the ratio of the two pigments anyway. Ultimately, it’s not worth it if you have ultramarine and quin rose anyway.
I do have Rose of Ultramarine but not the Imperial Purple.
