Steve Moriarty shows his technique on how to cold dop, transfer, and remove a gemstone. He chooses to use a two part epoxy instead of dop wax when he sets up to facet a gem. Thanks Steve. Great information. I'm getting close to transferring my dop. So I will pay special attention not to heat the dop. And to lose a 100 carat Tanzanite would almost bring tears to the eyes.
While in this video we were able to free the gem from the dop without heat, sometimes it just isn't possible (if the epoxy seeps under the dop). You'll then have to heat the dop to free the gem. Take a look at another example we have showing how Steve does free a different tanzanite using heat (as little as possible) to free the gem after picking all the epoxy around the perimeter of the dop. It is not as risky with less heat sensitive stones, but I thought I would share this with you just for another reference point showing his technique. Thanks. The link to the other video was very helpful. I noticed that Steve doesn't polish the girdle, he mentioned in another video that it doesn't make a lot of difference to brilliance of the stone. I polished my girdle, and I have to admit it has been the most difficult part so far of the process. Actually, polishing as a beginner takes forever. Regards Cliff

Thank you for making this video Steve. I didn't realise that relatively quick setting epoxy resin glue was available. The brand i have been using recommends 16 hours drying time.

Thank you very much for this video, it solved a problem I've been unable to solve myself. I've been cutting for about two years now, and the stress from the dop transfer process has almost been enough to make me sell my equipment and take up another hobby. This idea is brilliant. While I haven't yet lost anything like the stone you lost, I've cut way too many pavilion only stones that were only suited for the fish tank due to issues with transferring using CA, wax, or both.

When I started cutting, I used epoxy, but it was the difficulty involved with removing the dop due to putting the glue between the stone and the dop. I think your idea is going to make me switch back to epoxy. Have you tried mixing in a small amount of cornstarch with the epoxy to keep it from flowing as much and staying more where you want it?
I have not found the need and don’t want to chance changing the character of the glue.

Transfer block. Dental wax available at pharmacy
Would an electrically heated tool like wood burning artists use or even a soldering iron work instead of the alcohol lamp? Ever try CrystalBond? Works at lower temp than wax and sticks like crazy. Cleans with acetone too. I heat cloisonne pieces on a hot plate so the temp is controlled. Much better results than a torch.
Not sure the advantage of the tool. I like the lamp and sharp blade as I can often avoid any heat to the stone and it is quick. Have not tried crystalbond how is it used to attach stones.

I use it for dopping jewelry pieces for grinding and polishing. What do you use to remove epoxy from faceted stones? I used Jasco paint and epoxy remover on turquoise and it ate the stone was like limestone chalk powder.
Norman Poe I use “attack”. A lot of turquoise is filled with plastics

Norman Poe I don’t know the best way. A hot needle to the back of the stone may produce a detectable smell. Will leave a mark.

Could you use Super Glue instead of 2 part epoxy?
Super glue takes too much heat to separate from the dop adding to risk of fractures
I do use super glue when the stone separates from the dop during cutting
