Korea is the only East Asian country on the continent that has not been absorbed by China.. All other ethnic groups have been absorbed, so China is now made up of 56 ethnic groups.. Korea is a country that has survived as a single people for several years.. So Korea has Korean language and writing culture.. The reason why Korea was not absorbed by China is due to geographical reasons.. 70% of the country is a mountain.. So it is easy to defend against war.. And Koreans have a very strong nationalism..When they were invaded from outside, they fought with their lives..In the 5,000-year history, the country was stolen to Japan for 35 years..But even during the Japanese colonial era, Koreans killed Japanese soldiers with numerous independence movements. ..... Even now, if there is an outside invasion, Korea will fight at the risk of life.. But Korea is a huge weapon producer and has thousands of missiles, so it won't be easily destroyed even if it is invaded from outside.

the "Northern barbarians" were the Koreans - along with the Mongols and the Jurchens. The great wall of china is just slightly above beijing. Manchuria was never conquered by the Han chinese nor was it EVER chinese territory (except the few yrs where shilla gave away some northern territory to Tang. but that really was maybe for a decade or 2). Northeast Manchuria were traditional Jurchen area, and southwest were traditional Korean lands. Eventually the Jurchen clan of Aisin Gioro rose to power in the area when korean presence was diminished (volcano eruption, inner conflict etc), and eventually united manchuria. they then made a pact with Joseon (korea) and freely attacked Han china and absolutely annihilated them. And china was under Manchu rule for 300 yrs, until they were overthrown by the xinhai (chinese) revolution. But by then, it was the 1900s and Korea had been annexed by imperial Japan, and the Russians were contesting Manchuria with japan, while china was still going through a civil war
The manchurians had no place to go. .. Till Imperial japan proposed Manchuko, and drove out the russian influence in the area. the manchu people along with native koreans moved back to their Manchurian homeland during this time... until ww2 happened and all the land was once again stripped from them once again. Also, since Imperial japan mucked up traditional border lines so much, the Jurchens, Manchurian kOreans, and Manchuria itself was wiped off the face of the map, and for the first time in China's history, Manchuria was handed to the chinese by the allies while the Koreas were divided in 1/2 .. cus obviously the allies did not know the history of the region.
Shortly after, the genocide of the manchu pple in china began, much like how the chinese are trying to erase Uhyghyrs from history ( also not traditional chinese land). and just like that. Manchuria was wiped off the face of the earth.and china want you to forget that manchuria even ever existed

Thank you for this video; whenever I try to find books on Korean history it either is about the Korean War or the split between South and North Korea, not classical or medieval Korean history. Content like this has proved more informative than many libraries.

To add, Silla did not technically unify all the three kingdoms because about 20 years after the fall of Goguryeo another powerful kingdom named Jin (or, more famously known, Balhae) was established, whose population consisted of former Goguryeo people, and recovered and even extended beyond the former territory. Thus, some people call the period North-Southern kingdoms period rather than unified Silla period.
Balhae had a lot of Malgal nomadic people in it though and the founders, the Tae clan, were probably Malgal people too.
Tae was gofuryeo's traditional family name. So, the king and most of high positioned people were from goguryeo

Balhae king noted to a Japanese king that he is a successor of Goguryeo!! Balhae's founder, Daejoyoung's descendants are living in Korea!! Dae(Tae)'s clan.

Even when Korean territory was at its largest it was dominant at a local rather than global level, which isn’t the case with China.
That's just what tends to happen when surrounded by much more influential and historically significant states (Chinese dynastys, Japan, the multiple nomadic tribes) that tends to be the case of alot of smaller countries. Armenia is another example

The name korea came from Goryeo (AD 10C~14C). Goryeo was a country that meant having Goguryeo. That is, the Goryeo people, the ancestors of modern Korea, regarded Goguryeo as the history of the same people. But why does China say that Goguryeo is the history of China? Chinese people say that both the history and culture of neighboring countries are Chinese.
Balhae also called itself Goryeo, in 758 AD their king told Japan that he is the king of Goryeo.
Probably because China greatly influenced Korea and gave them Confucianism and many other things however Korea was regarded as a different country and not part of China( execept maybe for Han dynasty since they took over a portion of Korea). Korea has a lot of Chinese culture but Korea also has many unique things China doesn’t have which makes Korea, Korea.
Baekje's first king Onjo(온조) is son of Goguryeo's first king Jumong(주몽). China thinks that Baekje is the history of China by stealing Goguryeo.

In Chinese's opinion, Goguryeo ppl are ancestors of manchurians living in north east China nowadays. The ancestor of modern Korean are those peninsula tribe ppl who were conquered and slaved by Goguryeo. It's just like french or german ppl claim that their ancestor is the king of Roman empire.
The name of a country or a man is meaningless in history research. The whole Korean history was written in Chinese characters. Would you think ancient Chinese are your ancestors?

Such an interesting time in Korean history. Each kingdom was mostly independent, powerful compared to other powers in the area, and had unique characteristics that all show up in Korea today.
Damn the classic "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". I knew nothing of Korean history or that they even had a three kingdoms era so I thank you and this video for enlightening me.

Fun fact!: the Kingdom of goryeo and its last emperor were overthrown by general yi song gye! The first king of the Joseon dynasty! And also the name Goryeo is basically the modern day name of Korea!

Five logical steps to prove that Goguryeo is Korean history.
1, the clothes of Goguryeo are similar to those of Silla. They wear a cone hat decorated by feather and a coat over their pants. You can see this in ancient murals or
2, Goguryeo's tomb style is identical to that of Baekje.
3, There is no discovery Scythian-style crowns in China while found in Goguryeo. Currently, only gold, silver and bronze crowns are found in Baekje, Silla, Goguryeo in common.
4, According to Nihon Shoki, the oldest japanese history book, the three kingdoms of the Korean Peninsula spoke the same language.(The three kingdoms lent each other translators when they needed to go to China.)
5.For a long time, Chinese historians couldn't interpret what was written on the tombstone of King Gwanggaeto. They didn't even know it existed before the Qing Dynasty. As a result, the first people to interpret were Japanese. On the other hand, even the Samguk Sagi,the korean history book, is recorded. And on this monument, the king himself asked the Korean(韩人) to protect his tomb.

2. Most of Koguryo's oldest historical records are in Chinese history books.

4.The royal family of Baiji is from Koguryo. It is normal for them to be similar.
5.Koguryo and Baiji share the same language, but they are different from Silla.
The language of Silla is the predecessor of Korean, while Gaoguri is recorded in ancient Chinese books similar to the language of the Fuyu nationality.
6. Most of Koguryo's territory is in China at present, and most of the Gaoguri still live in northeast China. More than 10,000 members of the royal family of Koguryo were exiled to China.
Really ridiculous thing is Korea see Goguryeo as their ancestors, actually Goguryeo invaded Silla and Baekje which is Korea’s ancestors. It’s like Chinese see Mongolia as their ancestors. Now Goguryeo people are mainly in northeast China and some in Korea.

People in Goguryeo called themselves Goryeo. And Goryeo literally claimed to be the "successor of Goguryeo", since the founder, Wang Geon, officially traced his his family lineage back to Goguryeo nobility who sought refuge in the Kaesong region

Pretty nice run down. Now we understand why Korea is so hypersensitive to China's efforts in revising history to make it look like Goguryeo is really Chinese and that Koreans are just another ethnic minority in China. There is clearly a rich history here that is uniquely Korean.
I’ve never heard of the Chinese revising Korea’s history regarding Goguryeo. It’s clear that if you search Tang Dynasty on Wikipedia, there is a drawing that depicts visitors from many countries that came for trade. And in the portrait identifies all three of these kingdoms. If anything, it could be the Manchus or Jurgens that claim ancestry with Goguryeo, definitely not the Han Chinese. Regardless, Korea’s history relies a lot on the writings from Chinese characters and that is the connection many centuries before the Korean language was developed during the Joseon dynasty.

Yeah that war was funny. Shilla bides its time for a few years until Tang withdraws its troops (partly because Tibet was threatening their western borders big time), then they swooped in and attacked. Then they "submit" and apologize for their behavior and Tang has its hands tied so they just agree to peace.

Silla never unified the Korean peninsular as Goguryeo was revived as Balhae 30 something years after it collapsed. Goryeo which is one of the Goguryeo's desendents truly unified the three kingdom areas.

Great video. Thank you for making it and sharing it with everyone. I'd like to point out one inaccuracy in the video. The kingdom of Wa in Japan responded to Baekjae's appeal for help against the Tang, dispatching over 40,000 troops to help defend Baekjae. Although they were defeated, it shows that the two kingdoms of Baekjae and Wa were closely allied with each other. Their royal families intermarried. Later, Baekjae royal officials and the descendents of the king fled to Japan, where they became assimilated and established their own fiefdom in medieval Japan.
The significance of Battle of Baijiangkou seems underestimated in Korea as they don't want to teach that event.

3) Kublai Khan regarded Goryeo as the same country as Goguryeo. By the end of the Mongol invasions of Korea, Kublai was in the middle of a power struggle with Ariq Böke whom was residing in Karakorum while Kublai himself was participating in the Chinese Campaign. Having the Goryeo crown prince come before him to concede after decades of fighting, Kublai Khan was jubilant and said "Goryeo is a country that long ago even Tang Taizong personally campaigned against but was unable to defeat. But now, its crown prince has come before me, and this be the will of heaven as it is!"

Excellent video! Thanks for making it and focusing on Korea's ancient history. You should consider focusing on the Imjin War next, or even one of the pivotal battles of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, such as Baekgang involving the Yamato Japanese and the the Chinese Tang dynasty allied to Silla.
Baekgang battle started with Baekje's last attempt at a comeback after its fall and involved its ally Yamato Japan going up against Silla and Tang alliance. It was a battle that helped decide the end of the Three Kingdoms period with Silla as the victor.

The name of Korea comes from Goguryeo (BC 37 or 3rd century - AD 668), the name of which had been later changed by its king into Goryeo, or/and Goguryeo was sometimes called Goryeo, even before Silla unified three kingdoms(Goguryeo, Baekje[BC 18 - AD 660], smaller Silla[BC 57-AD 676]). Some rulers of Goguryeo founded Balhae (sometimes called Jin or Goryeo) with Goguryeo refugees and Jurchens(=proto-Manchus) in the former Goguryeo territory after the fall of Goguryeo, claiming it to be a successor of Goguryeo.
Goguryeo or the "first" Goryeo originated from Buyeo, and Buyeo was founded near the place of Go-Joseon. "Old" Joseon or Go-Joseon was the first Korean kingdom and its name was just "Joseon" at its time, but for distinguishing from "later"/"Yi" Joseon, it is now called "Go(=old)-Joseon". Baekje came from the royal family of Goguryeo.
When greater/unified Silla (AD 676 - 935) weakened later, "new" Goryeo replaced the unified Silla, claiming that the new royal court succeeded "old" Goryeo (i.e., Goguryeo). When Balhae fell in the north, rulers and refugees of Balhae were accepted by newly founded Goryeo. "New" Goryeo (AD 918-1392) was a trade country where even muslim merchants came for businesses from the Middle East and its name was known to foreign countries as "Core", "Corea", and current "Korea" etc.
"Yi" Joseon (1392-1897)replaced "new" Goryeo, with the same name of the "old" Joseon kingdom.
Sum: Go("old")-Joseon->Buyeo->three kingdoms->greater Silla (+ Balhae in the North, which also claimed to succeed the fallen Goguryeo, but when Balhae fell later, its rulers were accepted by "new" Goryeo)-> "new" Goryeo -> "Yi" Joseon or just Joseon -> 20th century history of colonialism(1910-1945), provisional government (1919-45), division into north/south Koreas(1945-), Korean republic-building, north/south (1948-), and war in 1950-3, and now.

Goryeo's founding king-Wang Jian (王建).
Wang Jian (王建) is very obviously the immigrants or descendants of the Han people (whether the culture of clothes is the Han culture), this possibility is quite high.
Because Wang Jian is the descendant of the Chinese (Han), the regime he has established follows the abbreviation of the ancient country Goguryeo, as the new national name Goryeo. The North Korean people at the southern end of the peninsula were called as workers and slaves (wearing pure white clothes and women to show nipples). Later, they became the civilians of Goryeo.

It is 200 one hour episodes. I watched them all.

@@SammyCee23 Numbers. Teutonic knights were not actually that numerous and their military strenght was dependent on help from knights from the west (mostly from the Holy Roman Empire of Germany).
Also European battlefield did not prepare you properly for opponents like Mongols.

Oh they had plenty as they often had to unite with reinforcements from various European countries, but they had a geographical advantage (densely packed areas, forests, fortresses) that should've greatly gave them leverage against Mongols who were used to vast open areas.

Even though Teutonic Knights didn't take major losses against Mongols. They were too occupied with attacking Poland and Hungary.
If I rememeber correctly Poles managed to win one or two battles but fighting them off while being fractured was an impossible task.

I have been living in Deajeon, South Korea for nearly 4 years. This was great and helpful. I have tried to study the history here but the names all muddle together too often for me (and the time line is so long). So I try to use Roman emperors as time-markers but that doesn't always work either. The visual maps and such here were very helpful to me. Visiting the historical sites here is also often not helpful as generally there have rebuild within the past few decades and look extremely similar as a result.

well, every countries have its dark period stories. Modern Korean history is one of them but there was a period that Korean kingdom is a superpower of the region. As we can see in this video, Goguryeo is one of them. Just like the United States has prevented the growth of Japan through trade wars and is now doing the same with China, Sui also started a war to prevent the growth of Goguryeo but they failed and collapsed. There's Balhae which was founded after the fall of Goguryeo and also Goryeo which was founded after the fall of United Silla, too. 20th century Korea makes us hard to think that Korea has its superpower or regional power periods in the past. I enjoyed the video.

Parhae's culture was a mix of Korean, Chinese, and Mohe elements and it's pretty unclear what their language was.
Also Koryo when Liao and Jin were around was another period where they were a major player. Basically a tripolar world in continental Northeast Asia.

It had a dark age in the late 19th to early 20th century. Korea resurged again and is now considered both a regional and great power because of its economy, cultural reach, and military.

Man, silla is the underrated mvp of this story. Always waiting, never becoming greedy, and they get the reward of becoming the first kingdom to unify the Korean peninsula. Shame they only hold it for less then 300 years.
tbf, they weren't the biggest target, so that was their double-edged sword. So long as they were strong enough to demonstrate that either kingdom that moves against them would weaken them to the point that they would collapse against the other kingdom's invasion they were safe.
Kingdom A invades Silla.
a) Pyrrhic victory. Kingdom B moves against weakened Kingdom A.
b) Complete failure. Kingdom B moves against weakened Kingdom A.
c) Holds territory. Has to deploy huge amounts of soldiers to hold it against an complacent territory. Same result. Kingdom A invades.
Although I'm sure there were some scenarios where one kingdom was politically unstable but no-one was confident enough to exploit that.
That's what makes the scenario of three kingdoms so simple yet elegant in their gridlock.
