- Wonderful and unforgettable interpretation of the great Jeremy Brett television for the work of Oscar Wilde.
Arthur is a wealthy man who is proudly lazy and uses his knowledge and wit for no profitable purpose, other than verbally sparring with Mabel Chiltern, Sir Robert's sister and a woman of no small beauty and charm. Robert is a member of Parliament who is well-known for his firmly held principles and his devotion to his loving wife, Lady Gertrude. When a proposal is placed before Parliament to build a British canal through Argentina, Robert makes it clear he regards the project as a huge mistake and will speak out against it. However, one Laura Cheveley soon arrives on the scene, telling Robert it is in his best interest to support the canal plan -- and if he does not, Laura has incriminating information that could ruin his career in politics.

Anybody else think Jeremy Brett is absolutely perfect as Lord Goring?
Absolutely perfect!
Jeremy Brett light up the screen whenever he appeared. RIP Sherlock.
Margaret Leighton never gave a 'not bad' performance in her entire career. She is sublime here.
Yes, she is v, good.
She's wonderful, with that mix of charming surface and 'don't mess with me' core. And I love her age, it fits with this character: somebody who has seen all the games and heard all the lines, and once the doors are closed, doesn't waste any time on getting to the point.
while Jeremy Brett is positively sublime here, in case anyone hasn't recognized him yet, Sir Robert is played by none other than Keith Michell, who would later on receive ultimate recognition as King Henry in The Six wives of Henry the VIII!
I’m so glad to discover this version / production of “An ideal Husband.” I’m a huge fanatic of Jeremy Sherlock 🕵️♂️ Holmes Brett, but it’s so great to see so many other actors, such as the actress who plays Gertrude here. I know the Jeremy Northam, Julianne Moore , Minnie Driver version and I love that version too. I’m a fan of Oscar Wilde I guess?
Then please view the 1947 movie w Michael Wilding and Paulette Goddard. Sublime.
@@простадівчина Michael Wilding was married to Margaret Leighton............Mrs Cheveley in this video.
i adore ms leighton !!!!
Delightful!!!
have you read the play? she is precisely what I imagined as Mrs. Cheveley ! She is a genius! Margaret is 43 here... "we poor women who are under 40 or say that we are!"
She's actually 47 in this clip. She was born in 1922.
@@WillScarlet1991 She died in 1976 aged 53.
Now that makes more sense. She seems closer to 50 but many people aged more quickly then.
The Audio sounds like there's a vacuum cleaner in the background. Is that just me?
Interesting how the famous ruby and diamond 'bracelet/brooch vanishes within two frames....00.40 - 00.41
He should have said what Michael corleone said: "don't ask me about my business"
I know I'm not supposed to, but I really, really like Mrs Cheveley. Given that this is an Oscar Wilde play, it's probably not going to end well for her, but I just love that silk outside, steel inside combination of her.
Where is the first one??!
How do I get rid of the damn subtitles? I can' t watch it with them.
Tap on the top right hand side of the screen/video, tap on the three dots, "captions" are one of the options, take it from there.
Where is 1/6?
It's here -> ua-cam.com/video/5XbNkmk9_ko/v-deo.html :) someone else uploaded the first part.
Where do you get the DVD?
Mrs Chevly is way too old.
Despite she’s only 43 she looks like in her late 50. Beautiful, posh, but too old ironically
@@nattie-k8380 Not at all. She looks mature and sophisticated, just the age to be confident about blackmailing someone successfully.
