That was absolutely delightful… how to insult someone sweetly to their face… brilliant!
Loved it, but my favorite will remain "The Importance of Being Ernest." It's just too funny. The original, not the remake. Although funny, I prefer the cast in the original.
I’m taking your advice, now I’m watching 😂
No, I think Lady Windermere's Fan is much better 💯✔💯✔👍

Absolutely agree!!!
With Michaels Redgrave and denison, Edith evans etc. it made me laugh out loud all the way through and hadn’t aged a jot
Simply a marvel. We owe Oscar Wilde a debt that cannot be repaid.
Beautiful and clever play matched by the outstanding costumes.

Wonderful 1890's period-piece romance starring the delightful Paulette Goddard as a wicked, slightly tarnished jezabel. Michael Wilding, w/his dreamy eyes is our hero, a hard pursued titled bachelor all the ladies want. This is a GEM of a movie. ☆☆☆☆☆

She's utterly wicked, quite scary in the film. It's a wonder no one takes a broom to her!

Wow❤❤❤🎉
One must watch several times to catch half of Wilde's brilliance. Fortunately, there is fine acting, costuming and direction along the way.
I agree. It's the same with reading his plays. He's just brilliant.
Yes, that's why I like UA-cam. You can rewind any time you want. Great for reading subtitles that go by too fast.
fortunately it is a pleasure to watch it several times....
Oscar Wilde's witty prose, clever characters plus the glorious costuming, particularly the green-mauve gown on Paulette Goddard make this adaptation very enjoyable to watch!
Cecil Beaton costumes are so elegant
I’ve watched this film many times and still enjoy it. Handsome Micheal Wilding , and all the gorgeous clothes. The beginning sets the stage.
I love a good Oscar Wilde story! This was well done by all.
The opening scene was spectacular!
Loved Sir Rhalph Richardson's monolog, never understood why he did not get a credit...
Oscar Wilde has been my personal Hero since my teenage years ( now 68 ) . It is so clear that he was born into the wrong era . His brilliance and ego ,... his not playing the game well enough in real life ( unlike his written characters ) proved to be his heart breaking downfall .
Yes, I agree, he was born too early. He would be well loved today and well cared for. I have been a fan of his since my early teens too. Now, 58.
Absolutely great! Love Oscar Wilde and all his works
Is Oscar Wilde a hero??
@@Guruenglishh stay tuned
This was a very enjoyable movie. Loved
the women' dresses, the carriages, just an
all around good movie.
Very clever, and certainly a good take on human nature! Seems like we are living this all again, now. Deceit, lies, more lies, honor, and Truth!
Excellent. Always wonderful to see Oscar Wilde's brilliance.
Absolutely delightful......thank you for posting.
Such a good find of a film. Brilliantly written.
Thank you for uploading this Gem, 💐
Smiled through the whole movie! The wit, the charm, the devilish antics! 😊

One of my favorite movies. Love Glynis Johns. Oscar Wilde always has clever writing. The 1999 version is well done, also.
Wilde was a tragic case. If anyone would have understood his demise, it would surely have been himself.
Beaton's costumes are spectacular.
The intrigue kept developing into what could have been very unfortunate..but being completely perfect is impossible..we all have chinks wherever they maybe…being in the condition human makes it so…
Enjoyed this. Thank you.
That's a great movie
Amazingly Glynis Johns is the only member of the cast still alive in 2023.
Here is he now?
რატომ სამწუხაროდ?ცოცხალი რომ არის იმიტომ?

" After the ball is over".. pretty opening song, great memories of childhood when elderly adults around us hummed these sweet ditties..
😂 Thank U for the name of the song!
@mimiluvfromsf you're welcome ;) then comes a bit of Colonel Bogeys March at 3:40 😂
I see most people prefer “Earnest” more than “Ideal Husband,” but I like this more. Maybe it’s the perfect performance by so many, Michael Wilding being my favorite.
Loved it!

hermosos escenario, vestuario, locaciones, moda y actuaciones, todo PERFECTO
He died in poverty and disgrace, but if you fly into Dublin, they have GIANT wall sized pictures of him all over the place. May he rest in Part, because I doubt he would choose peace.
What a retrospect, from former years to today, how distinct the rivalry between man and woman it's depiction of human nature and its struggles of good and evil. Love and honor forever more held in the balance..
Thank you!!!!!
I nearly picked this as an option a film club I'm in votes on and later discusses but I didn't think it'd win so I axed it. Looks like the universe is pushing me toward watching it anyway. 👀
Woe
I adore Wilde's clever way with words and witty observations, but the lesson here is obviously, that cheaters can prosper with impunity and continue to enjoy the fruits of their ill gotten gains with a clear conscience..
And they are still cheating there way to the top even now.
Oscar Wilde's consummate wit, always spot-on. He reveals the sexes to each other. By the way, I bet the lawn in Hyde Park was the greenest in all England and the most treacherous, with all the horse riding.
The horses were ridden along the tan track, not on the grass.
I wish to find another film based on the brilliant Oscar Wilde, A Good Woman. It seems it disappeared from any channels. Maybe you can find it!
Thank you for your work and passion!
Absolutely great!
Such a wonderful show! Those dresses are amazing..... But that zipper on that one dress drove me nuts LOL

Great movie , very enjoyable and beautiful ending !!
Brilliant!
I hope everything went smoothly
The balance of wit and serious plot makes this film an entirely different experience than the delicious but decidedly frothy works.
Must watch movie.
Ευχαριστώ πολύ ❤
Really liked
Just brilliant!
Oscar Wilde My favorite writer!
so witty!
I also want to see what was so objectionable about Oscar Wilde's work that it was banned. I know his homosexual affair put him in prison. With all this book banning nonsense recently, I want to see the reason for his writing to be forbidden.
Why is Oscar Wilde your favorite writer?😮

Beautifully done movie but must comment on the lush sets.
Estupenda película, muy al estilo de OSCAR WILDE, lástima que no estuviera en español, las letras van muy rápidas, no sabes si ver o leer
Me encantan los films antiguos
When she forces him to write the letter …I felt so bad for him😢
Love the song in the beginning, "after the ball" isn't it?
Przyjemny film! Film o żmijach :)
As far as serious melodramas go, this one at least is leavened by Wilde's sharp wit,
Love it, but then it is Oscar Wilde so what is not to love !
Marvellous movie! Love me some Oscar Wilde any time! One intriguing detail: in the beginning, at the ball, an announcement is made of 'The Duke and Duchess of Sussex'. however, in 1895 (the year the movie is set in, as is said in the very beginning) there were no Duke and Duchess of Sussex! The title was only bestowed twice: the first time from 1801 to 1843, to Prince Augustus Frederick, the sixth son of King George III, and the second time in 2018, to the current Duke, Prince Harry. Wilde probably felt safe to use the name, as there was no holder of the title at the time ...
im wainting 😍😍😍
Wow
Scrumptious!
Too many lies and the Jezebel really looked her part ! Loved the clothes, the fashionable hairdos that's about it 😮
A pity it looks poorly colorized instead of restored.

Estaba escéptico y dudoso, pero lo intenté y fue una gran experiencia invertir con la Sra. Selby Walter.
A very young Gwyneth Johns steals the show. Her most famous role was probably Mrs. Banks from Mary Poppins.

Thoroughly enjoyed this society melodrama of blackmail and political intrigue. While I know Paulette Goddard is the nominal star, but my applause goes to the superb Diana Wynyard. You can tell she knows the role of Mrs. Gertrude Chiltern inside out, that she's a old hand at Wilde and the whole repertoire of Modern British drama. She Possesses Beauty, Brains and a honeycomb voice I could listen to for hours. Ive always admired Goddard but there aint nothin English or aristocratic about her...she is the All - American tootsie from So Proudly We Hail (43). I personally imagine Margaret Lockwood in as the scheming Mrs. Cheveley. Ive book marked this one for a 2nd viewing.
Oscar Wilde was not only a brilliant playwright but somewhat of a seer ...74 years after he wrote the play there was indeed an Argentine Scheme, albeit not associated with a canal. 😂😂💕
Subtitle Persian films classic very good ❤❤❤❤❤❤thanks ❤❤❤❤
Compared to the Rupert Everett version this has a lot more of Wilde’s play dialogue. But the brooch theft angle is such a poor plot device, no wonder the newer version dropped it. A woman as clever as Mrs. Cheveley would have said “Oh dear, my husband bought it for me in Paris, I had no idea it was stolen, please return it to its true owner with my apologies.”
Obrigado
"Goode Ol' Oscar!"
❤great
Hahaha impressive
Interesting to me is the fact that vacuum cleaners did not gain widespread use until after women ceased wearing dresses with long, floor and street sweeping hems. 😟
☺☺merci pour ce film ! Un vrai régal !!
The combination of WIldes words and Sir Cecil Beatons costumes is outstanding . ❤
:))) Идеальных мужей точно не бывает, только не нужно давать себя использовать неким "миссис Чивли":)☕☕👆😉😘💖
Great, but these are the worst subtitles ever. Several errors in Ralph Richardson's initial narration, and shortly afterwards the maid says 'downstairs', not 'upstairs'. Rather a basic error. I switched off at that point. And do we really need to be told about the music, horses' hooves, etc.? That we can already hear?
This was a better film than expected! The ending has a very O. Henry vibe, loved it! On a modern day note, so thankful we're no longer required to dress in these ridiculous costumes unless we *want* to! I'm good with a t shirt, jeans and sneakers thank you! 😄
I love the ladies dresses and hats but glad they are in a distant past.
Oh, no way , i never even wear the clothes that you suggest. I love to dress up. Maybe not just like this film
What is ridiculous about victorian clothes? I think it's beautiful! We could take lessons from them! Everyone looked elegant. Today people dress like bums! Clothes is an extension of our personalities. Today's clothing leaves nothing to the imagination and, it reflects where we have gone in society!
