Update! Several lovely people suggested I cut a square of pantyhose and secure it to the opening of the bottle with a rubberband. I have been doing that since I tried it, it's much easier than washing the strainer everytime! You can even put the lid back on the bottle once the pantyhose is on there.. No more strainer, hello pantyhose!
I just bought “Strainer screw on tops” they are exclusively for the Floetrol bottles. You just screw them on to the bottle, then of course rinse well and you are ready for the next pour! So far it works great....Got them on Amazon, the actual product is SplashNcolor Filter Cap Strainer for Floetrol Jug Black, 2-Pack.
Hiccups are so irritating but funny to others so thanks for that! Lol Thank you Mina, for showing us how you mix up your paints. I love watching you and I adore your wonderful personality! You’re very creative and I love watching you😘
Mina, I just started learning to paint last summer and have learned so much from you and I love how smooth your paintings dry. Two questions: by using the Liquitex varnish do you not have to varnish/seal it later? and 2) you paint outside all the time, I tried it outside twice so far. HOW DO YOU KEEP THE BUGS OUT OF THE PAINTING? I rescued 4 yesterday. TY for sharing your joy.
Hi Denise! I'm glad it worked out for you! I have to wash it right away tho, or the Floetrol dries.. a good friend suggested a piece of pantyhose rubberband-ed on the spout of the bottle would do the same as the strainer and not need to be cleaned up. I may try that!
Absolutely love your videos. They are so helpful. I probably watch them 4 or 5 days a week. I especially appreciate your use of different colors. I play with pour painting myself. One of the best things I discovered was to use spoons to stir my paint. When finished I just wipe the spoons off with a paper towel and give a quick rinse. Be safe !!
I was wondering how your paint always looked so fantastic when you poured!!! those lines you get and the definition - fantastic - thank you for sharing - Also - the hiccups were AWESOME LOL :) :)
Thank you very much for your text regarding Floetrol v PVA, ...you may well have saved me some time and expense , ....love your very informative vids , ...keep on pouring!!...👋
I just found this video and found it very helpful. I'm pretty new to this but absolutely love it! I subscribed to your videos after seeing the first one a couple weeks because I really enjoy watching you create, laugh and have such fun doing it. I did 3 small pours today and before I started decided to just go with whatever felt right in the moment and not stress so much about doing it "right" the way I've seen others do in their videos. And I loved everything I ended up with. This may sound corny but watching you have so much fun somehow gave me permission to just connect with the inner joy of creating. Thank you so much for all you share in your videos! You are awesome 👍😎💙🤗
That's the best!! I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself, this is so much fun to create like this! Keep going, it gets better and better! Much love to you Diane 🥰
Thanks Michelle! ❤ there is actually another video that's a much more complete guide to how I mix my paint.. ua-cam.com/video/iu4_rj10Ymg/v-deo.html Thank you so much for watching!!
Thanks for this video, Mina! I was having trouble getting the effect I wanted with just paint and Floetrol. I used a bit of gel medium that I had laying around, and it's binding the paint! The dollar store has similar small strainer, going to get one. I love the laughter in your videos. Light and love, Suzie
Thank you Suzie! 🥰 A quick note about the strainer.. wash it out right away, and wipe it really well with a paper towel. Dont let the Floetrol dry in the little holes! I learned this the hard way 😕 a friend suggested some pantyhose rubberband-ed onto the top of the bottle, then there is no clean up. I might go cut up a pair of hose lol good luck to you!
Hi! Love your pouring videos! I wanted to offer a helpful hint. When you use a spinner, use a cheap disposable shower cap (50 for $5 on Amazon) to protect the top. When that cap gets too gooky, just pull it off and put on a clean one!
Lol when I first started watching I was expecting to see a lil pup lol my mini schnauzer does those little woofs when she wants to be apart of wherever I am doing lol. Thank you, Mina for the tutorial, I am purchased some Liquitex professional pouring medium but I wasn't sure what the mixing ratio would be......all of a sudden there you are sharing tour mixing ratio❤ I love your art work and you contagious laugh 😆 💖 😄 Thank you for being you and all that you do! Have yourself a perfect day Sandi
Hi Sandi! There is a more complete 'How I Mix my paint' video that I did after this, that shows you the whole process with several different kind of paints, its a lot more comprehensive than this video.. there are no hiccups in that one tho 🤣😉
Thank you so much for this and your videos. I love pouring but I had a problem with the ready-to-pour brands I tried. Even though they all said they were nontoxic, my face broke out in a rash and I had a headache. Some I even woke up with a cough. And this was in a well ventilated space. It was heartbreaking to think I'd have to give it up. Then I found your channel. I already use Liquitex gloss medium as the first coat of varnish on my paintings so I knew I didn't have a problem with it. Such a relief.
So now its December, and I was thinking I should watch this again to see if I do something differently now than in the video. I dont 😂 the only thing I want to mention is that I was getting ready to do a straight pour, so I wanted my paint thin (that little bit of water at the end). If I was not doing a straight pour, I would have added a little less water before the Floetrol. But I'm still mixing my paint exactly the same way now. The only other thing worth noting is that I don't use a strainer anymore, I cut a square of pantyhose and secure it to the top of the bottle. Much easier and you dont have to scrub a strainer (which was very labor intensive and not very effective). Thanks for watching guys! If you're curious what all 12 cups of paint were for, check out my 'Medallions' video 😉
Do the tubes of paint say if they're heavy or medium body on them, I bought some Masters touch and I have an opened it up yet and I tried seeing if it said anything about what type of body paint it was and I couldn't find it
I just saw this video tonight and I kept telling my Havanese pup, Kimba, to quit yelping. I thought it was her begging me for attention! I actually turned around and apologized to her after I found out it was hiccups on your end. lol Great video btw. Thanks.
Hi Leo! I'm glad you enjoyed this one! There is a much more complete How I Mix My Paint video (but without the hiccups lol) that you might find helpful ua-cam.com/video/iu4_rj10Ymg/v-deo.html
I just bought my 1st tube of Payne's grey & cant wait to use it . And I'm always looking for a great PM recipe ( there are so many on here its mind boggling )but I have not found one that works perfectly for me so I cant wait to try this one. I already have 2 bottles of the Liquitex PM & varnish and I always use floetrol just never tried them together before. Thanks so much for sharing !! 🤩🤩🤩
@@MinaVillegasArt thank you !!! Oh and I LOVED your huge commissioned Anniversary piece you did that was amazing!!! I cant even image trying to handle a canvas that large without it having an imprint of my face right in the middle of it. !!!! Hahaha. !!! 😉😉😁😁😁😁🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 I cant wait to see what's next !!
Hi Gemima.. you can thin out my recipe by adding water to it at the end until its the consistency you like. This one is actually an older video, I do have a newer How I Mix My Paint video for 2020 ua-cam.com/video/iu4_rj10Ymg/v-deo.html
Oh my god, thank you for all your videos, I love you work, I can see how confident you are while making your tutorials... How WE CAN use Liquitex pouring medium? thank you so much again.
Hi Jana! Because I like to work on bigger canvases, I use the Gloss Medium (new name) so that it dries with a beautiful luster and sheen to it, pretty much eliminating the need to apply additional Varnish (because who wants to apply varnish to a huge canvas if they don't have to??) You can apply more varnish if you want it super shiny, but usually I don't. I hope this explains it ❤ I use it on all size canvases now..
Enjoyed watching ur 1st Video recommended by Heather. Your positive attitude definitely makes you someone I I want to learn from. I have not made my 1st pour yet but I have definitely spent hours reviewing many techniques n giving a lot of thought on want I want to do. I hope to be up n running in the next two weeks. I have had so much fun gather my tools.Any suggestion to a newbie would be greatly appreciated. I want to wish the best on your new venture.😎
Hi there! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! There are a lot of nuances in pouring, explanations help 😉 suggestions for a newbie, hmmm.. 1. You're going to waste some paint. Dont stress about it, it's how you will learn. Put down parchment paper or garbage bags and let them dry, then use them for pretty things lol. 2. Go slow Tilt slowly. Let the paint develop. Take your time and be in the moment, don't rush thru it. 3. Think about color. Look around at color and see what goes with what, and figure out what you like. You're going to buy a lot of paint, and you will hate some of it after the first time. It's ok. (Use it as a basecoat 😉) 4. Art is cheaper and more fun than therapy. Maybe not cheaper but definitely more fun lol.. this is fun, very fun. Let yourself get dirty, play with the paint and get to know it. Mix it with water.. then medium, then another medium. You will get to know each color like old friends, and you know exactly how they like their coffee and what they like.. 5. Get a digital scale and measure. You can do the math, dont be afraid. You will feel like a mad scientist, it's fun. 6. Be prepared for your art to take over your brain. It will. It's hard to think of anything else sometimes in the beginning. Like you're in love for the first or third time 🥰 dizzy thinking about color lol **Be prepared for your art to take up a lot of space. You need somewhere that you can tilt a canvas and have paint fall off. I used a dishwasher drip pan, I put parchment paper down and poured in that in the beginning. You will also accumulate canvasses that you treasure. They need to dry somewhere level and clean, and not touching each other. This is very very important, otherwise your paint will slide off your canvas overnight. Get a level and learn to use it (it's fun too) Have a place to dry more than one because it's hard to stop if you have paint left lol That's enough for now lol have a great night! 😂🥰😉
You can actually buy them at the Dollar Tree if you have one near you . I buy all of my supplies & gadgets like that at the dollar store ...cups all different sizes , wax or parchment paper for the over pour, stir sticks in a 100 pack , spatulas for spreading base coat , latex gloves .... all kinds of stuff. They even have small canvases & canvas boards that I buy to practice on. I love the dollar tree for stuff like that !!! 😉😉😉😉
@@joanbentivegna6413 oh that's great !!! I LOVE going there for supplies & just little odds & ends that I can use for painting . Some of them have small tubes or bottles of acrylic paints which I havent tried just because I assumed since they are there that they probably arent any good but then I saw a video of a popular artist on here that says she loves them for the high pigments in them so maybe there are some good ones. I will have to check them out but I prefer more liquid paints over the tubes of thicker paints. Just seems easier to get an equal consistency with the bottled / jar paints. Good luck hope you find lots of goodies at the dollar tree !!! 🥰🥰😁😁😁😉😉😉😉
Ok ty for showing me. I should’ve watched before I mixed up my white n floetrol n now don’t know what’s in what. Ugh. Why do you need the liquitex n not just flotrole? Is the pain color still opaque n strong after all that liquitex n water n floetrol? It’s my first time with heavy bodied paints. Ty for your advice I watch you all the time n love your art. Plz help me.
Dear Mina. You are so welcome to my life. I’m trying to do some art. Do not know much about it. I appreciate your teaching and suggestions, thank you, thank you!!! 😘
Hi mina. Thanku for showing how you mix your paints. Lmao your video had me laughing like crazy!! Boy did I need that today so THANKU FOR THAT! I have been mixing those mediums, except I havent been using enough of the liquitex gloss varnish pm. I haven't used any water. Will that cause a problem? I also dont use heavy body paints. I've been using: decoart, folkart & liquitex basics, & artist loft paints. My paints do seem a little thick too. They do make a mound. I'm still kind of new, been doing this for few months. I know I need to find out what works for me, i tried many ways. I like your way lol oh I also used liquitex pm with liquitex gloss varnish & floetrol. Is that too much together? Sorry for the long msg & questions.. thanku again fir the laughs & help. You are so awesome! Enjoy your day
Forgot to ask earlier, what do you use to cover your pants with if you don’t use them all? I’m thinking saran wrap? Not sure would appreciate your input.
hi from down Under 2 years later just wondering if you're still up and running with your show could you please tell me if you doing a really small canvas what's the amount do you do exactly what you do or do you make small amounts please. ✌️🌈🌏
You have no idea how long I've wanted to see a video of mixing thick paint from a tube! I could never figure out how people were getting full cups of paint when they were only using small amounts of paint. Can you just put these into squeeze bottles if you want to keep them? Also, I had watched a video where people were saying to use Regular Elmer's glue instead of the glue all, so I have a huge jug of that. Can I use that with the paint and then fill with floetrol? It's hard to commit to one certain recipe because there are so many different ones people swear by! Thank you soooo much for sharing everything you have learned with us!
Hi Debbie! There are so many recipes.. I'm not sure about keeping a glue based mix in a bottle, where I am it does thicken up and needs water added to get back to the right consistency..and that would be more difficult in squeeze bottle. You could mix it, put it in bottles then use it right away. As to the Elmer's.. I use GlueAll (when I do use it). The Elmer's School Glue is washable, so be aware. I know Julie Cutts has used both successfully, she uses a 70% water 30% glue mix. I have used glue and Floetrol together, it does work well and the glue helps keep colors separate and helps rings keep their shape. My issue with Glue is the sticky factor. As a Mom, I hate sticky lol it drives me nuts 😂 I dont like when I go to put my cup down and it sticks to my hand.. it's also a bit thick, like marshmallow fluff. If I choose to repour over a canvas that has a dried glue based mix on it, it cracks. Almost every time. But yes, Floetrol is the thing that fills the cup and thins the paint and pouring medium. It is a paint conditioner, which means that it thins the paint and makes it slippery so it will slide easier. It also slows the drying time of the paint so you have more time to move it around. But Floetrol is not technically a pouring medium. Pouring medium has polymers in it that bind with the paint, Floetrol does not. The thing I use GlueAll for now is thickening up thinner paints, or if I want good separation of colors. I mix the paints how I normally do, then add a little glue until it's the consistency I want. Be careful, it can look and feel thicker than it is.. Good luck to you! Happy mixing!
@@MinaVillegasArt GOOD HEAVENS... thank you for this VERY detailed reply! I appreciate it sooooo much! I do believe you have saved me from a lot of wasted paint! Thanks again! ❤❤
Mina. I have a question. For example I'm going to do a 16x20 pour. I know you said to take 16 * 20 and multiply that by 28 and that comes out to 11.42. so that would be 11 oz 42 of liquid that I would need for 16x20 that doesn't seem like it would be enough what am I doing wrong
Floetrol is actually a paint conditioner that smoothes the paint (it is not Modge Podge).. we use it to increase the volume of paint we have after it's mixed with pouring medium. There are lots of different recipes, this is one that I like most. Lately I have been using Golden's Heavy Gel Gloss and Floetrol, which gives me a thicker consistency, allowing for more control.
Hi Donna! Pouring medium is a thick liquid that is mixed with paint to make them pourable.. I think you would need special paint formulated to stick to China or ceramics, I'm not really sure. I would go to an art Supply store and ask them, they can point you in the right direction. Will it be used for food or just decoration? Will it get heated up? Lots of questions... good luck to you!
I'm an impatient person lol so I usually use it right away.. but once in a while I will have some left from a pour. I simply take a larger plastic cup and put it over the top of the cup with the paint. When I'm ready to use it I stir it up a lot and maybe add some water depending.. it will last a couple of weeks like that, depending on what your microclimate is like. Dont store the cup in direct sunlight either.. I hope this helps
Thank you! Yes the hiccups had me rolling! As well as the floutrol snot! 😉. And don’t you love scrubbing your hands when you the liquidtex pouring medium?
To smooth out your paint and increase the drying tome.. giving you more time to work the composition . Adding Floetrol also increases the volume of paint you have.
I can’t get over your laughter-it’s so contagious! Anyway, question, since you use high gloss varnish with your paints, do you still varnish them after the paintings have dried? I’ve ruined a few nice ones because of brush marks or air bubbles while trying to varnish the dried painting. Also,I’ve heard others say not to use more than 50-50 ratio water to paint lest the binder in the paint loses its integrity. Have you had any issues with your paintings after they’ve been dry for a while? I’m still new to pouring and am learning, so your input would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Cris! The bottle I'm using says 'Liquitex Gloss Medium &Varnish ' on it.. I'm not adding any additional varnish, just what's in there. I started using it because I was hoping I wouldn't need to varnish it after it was dry if it was already in there. The things that have dried have a nice shine to them, not as much as if I had sprayed varnish on, but it's a nice old world type sheen. I may put a coat of spray varnish on, but I dont think it really needs it. So I'm happy with it and just ordered more to use as pouring medium. I'd rather paint than varnish 😂 I had a painting I absolutely loved crack with varnish, it was heartbreaking. If I don't have to take that chance I'm happy.. As to the water, I'm not using more than 50 % water, more like 20%.. I'll pay closer attention today when I'm mixing to double check (I'm kind of on autopilot when mixing lately lol I tend to get in that 'consistency ' zone and the world disappears Haha see the hiccup paint mixing video for proof lol) Everything that I've painted so far has stayed the same, I have no complaints. As to thinning the paint a lot, check out MelyD, she uses a lot water with Liquitex pouring medium.. My stuff is always thick anyway lol too thin is not my issue 😂 I hope this helps 🌞 have a beautiful day Cris
Mina Villegas Art I love your intuitive approach-such is art-science and intuition. I will certainly give the gloss medium and varnish a try. Thanks so much for passing on the inspiration. I’ve watched a lot of Julie’s and Gina’s videos too. Y’all are amazing big sisters to me in fluid art. More power and blessings to you! Hope to see more videos, I love the color palettes you choose-totally in my preference list!
@@brendahartstern4565 Thanks. I think that could work. I’ve also since learned that after gloss-varnishing, one could use 0000-grade steel wool (really fine) to rub over the dry surface, then apply a coat of cold wax medium using circular strokes with a clean rag, then buff with a clean and dry soft cotton cloth or even one of those blue shop towels by Scott. This will produce a nice satin sheen, having knocked down some of that high gloss as well as those brush marks. I’ve tried it on non-fluid art and it works pretty well. Of course, this might be a chore when finishing a large piece :0)
Hi Mina and thanks for your video. I am wondering when or why you used Golden GAC800 or other why you need other medium ? Thanks very much ! By the way I LOVE your big canevas...I tried 3 littles 2 for 16x20 inches and 12 x 24 too but my mixture was not good I don't know why and the paint was more mixe together and finish in brown color. I used glue at 70% glue/30% water in one and in the other one liquitex pouring medium 1paint/2 PM . I don't know what is my missing part ? Its not easy always !!! Thank you so much if you can respond to me at my question.
Mina I said that wrong I'm doing a 16x20 pour. You said you multiply 16 and 20 and divide that by 28 it comes out to 11.42 so that would be 11.42 oz of total paint liquid I would need for 16x20 doesn't seem like it would be enough paint what am I doing wrong
Hi Diane! I can try lol I probably had about 3 ounces of pouring medium in the cup, then I add 2 or 3 ounces of paint, depending on how thick it is. In that video I did use a lot of the Golden's Payne's Grey in that cup, but I wanted it really dark. So between the paint and pouring medium it was probably at about 5 ounces.. then I add water, a bit at a time.. it might be an ounce or two total but its hard to tell when you're dribbling it in. Now its about 6 or 7 ounces, all well combined, then I add Floetrol. Those cups are 16 ounce cups, so that means about 9 or 10 ounces of Floetrol. So that would be 2:1 Floetrol to paint & medium. So one part paint, one part pouring medium and two parts Floetrol. I hope that makes sense. But you can do it anyway you like as long as you get the right consistency. Today I did a pour without pouring medium, I just used Floetrol. That was 150 g of Floetrol, to 30 g of paint, plus a bit of water. That would be 5:1 . As long as you are at the right consistency it's all good. For the record, I'm not a fan of just Floetrol on its own. It spreads too much. My pour looked great and now 2 hours later it's all kind of expanded and spread out. Without the polymers in the pouring medium to hold its shape it just lets go and relaxes for lack of a better word lol
So your ratio is 1:1 for both the paint medium and paint that's for the heavy body medium, do you use the same ratio for all paints heavy body or fluid or is it just something you have to eyeball and figure out, I use the Elmer's glue all purpose and I know that is thicker than floetrol so I'm sure I'm going to have to use more water
Hi Atlas! Cleaning the strainers is what actually made me stop using them. What I use now is a square of pantyhose and attach it to the top of the Floetrol bottle. It strains anything so you get good clean Floetrol and there's nothing to clean up!! The cap will screw back on with the pantyhose on there too ..
The cheapest way is to ask ladies if you can have them when they are done with them lol be careful asking anyone but your mom or sister though! 🤣 you can find pantyhose almost everywhere, try the dollar store or target or Walmart lol 😆
@@MinaVillegasArt Lol , Thank you that was actually really helpful! Though my mom doesn't wear them & I've no sister, no dollar store in hawaii. 😆 Can you imagine tho.. " Yeah your used pantyhose. No, no it's for a project, I'm creating, I mean I'll use them in a creative way. Ya know "fluid art" 😂 Ill have to get some on Amazon because I can't imagine trying to work that into a conversation. Thanks & mahalo Mina
Hi James! No, Floetrol is a paint conditioner that was developed to help paint spray guns not get clogged. Its function is to smooth out the paint and prolong drying time. PVA glue is an entirely different creature..it is glue. It dries quickly, and its very thick. It is used as a pouring medium sometimes, mostly when silicone is involved. (Not my thing but some people love it). The thickness of the glue is helpful if you are doing something that you want to hold its shape, like a ring pour. Personally I use Liquitex Gloss Medium, it has some of the same properties as glue but it is Archival and meant to be mixed with paint. I also use Floetrol, mostly to increase the volume of paint I have. They do different things, neither is correct or incorrect. Together, they work well for me, in my environment. You can mix and match lol have a mad scientist moment and get to know how they work individually and then in combination. You figure out what kind of technique you want to do, figure out what consistency you need for that technique, then mix your paints accordingly. I just did a piece with a leafblower and paint that was mixed only with water.. it was very cool and totally outside my comfort zone, but it taught me a ton and was really fun. Try everything at least once, see if you like it. 😉 this is fun stuff
Hi Laura! I dont generally use silicone in my pours for a couple of reasons. First off, I dont want to clean it off my painting if I want to varnish it. Second. I love straight pours that make cells naturally. Pouring your paint from up high aerates it and churns the paint, creating bubbles which then become cells. I have used silicone, when I first started and was on the quest for perfect cells with multi colored rings, but I was using Elmer's GlueAll and water as my pouring medium. I use Floetrol and Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish now, I've moved away from GlueAll but I will use it if a color is very thin and needs some body. 99% of the time I dont use silicone
I was so surprised to see your flowtrol like that. I have never had a container like that either before or after shaking. Yes l get the separation but never had those lumps.
Hi Sue! Yes I have used Glue before. When I started I followed Julie Cutts recipes on my quest for perfect multi colored rings around cells lol I learned so much from her! I prefer the pouring medium I am using now, but I do use glue occasionally, mostly to thicken very thin paint. I will also add a bit to my colors if I want good separation for a ring pour. Its another tool in your toolbox 😊 have a great day!
Hi Mina, late to this but have a couple of questions. Do you use this consistency for small pours too, I have a stupid number of 12inx12in canvases I would love to be experimental with. Also do you know what Floetral would be called in the UK? The other things are all availbele here, but with that I don't know what to look for. Many thanks. You have given me hours of delight and your laugh is to die for, so many thanks.
Hi Lindy! That is my basic ratio for mixing paint.. actually that was doubled because I was about the paint Gorgon's Grotto lol. But the essential recipe is the same: 2 parts pouring medium to paint, then the same amount of Floetrol as medium. You could do 20 grams of pouring medium, 10 grams of paint and 20 grams of Floetrol. As long as the ratio is the same it should work fine. Some paints are much thicker, obviously you would add more water to those. I think there is a product called 'Owatrol' that is similar to Floetrol. If you go to a hardware store and you ask for 'paint conditioner' they can help you. Tell them you want something for a paint sprayer that will slow the drying time of the paint. Its actually meant to keep paint sprayers from clogging up Haha, but we have stolen it lol. I think I saw something by Liquitex the other day that was similar. If I find it I'll let you know. For a 12x12 canvas I usually use a 5 ounce Paper dixie cup full of paint. The actual formula tho is length x width then divide by 28. So 12x12=144, then 144÷28 = 5.14. Good luck!! 🥰
Mina Villegas Art , Fantastic! Thanks so much for the detailed reply. I am going to need help as I am in a wheelchair, but have a son who might like going on this adventure with me. Without him I would be very worried about the clean up! That formula for area is awesome!
Hi Megan! Yes, because I like to use big canvases it's nice to not have to worry about varnishing additionally once they are dry. LGM&V dries with a beautiful luster without any additional varnish.
What is the EXACT purpose of the Floetrol? I would prefer not to have that many cells present in my pours. Am I able to have cell free pours? Thank you for your videos, they have been a huge help to me.
Hello Peace! The Floetrol is a paint conditioner that slows down the drying time of your paint, giving you more time to move it around. I mostly use it for its slippery texture, it helps the paint slide easier, and stretches your paint and medium farther. If you dont want cells, dont do a straight pour. Try a ring pour or something where you keep your cup close to the canvas. Floetrol alone will give you tons of cells, maybe try just pouring medium by itself or with just a bit of Floetrol.
Thanks Mina!! That’s for showing us such a close up! I’ve tried doing almost 10 pours now. Just as a hobby and learning the right paint thickness and the perfect recipe has been tricky for me. I love your work and your care free vibe! Keep going! I wish I could own a piece of yours. Do you sell them online?
Hi Gloria! The Floetrol is a paint conditioner that extends the working time of your paints. I recommend you watch my paint mixing video, the How I Mix My Paint Complete Guide.. ❤️

The jackhammers are killing me tbh lol the rest of it I love 🥰 thank you for watching, I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos!
Thank you for making your "how to mix" video. The strainer is great. It saved the day. Thank you for mentioning it!!!
Hi Denise! I'm glad it worked out for you! I have to wash it right away tho, or the Floetrol dries.. a good friend suggested a piece of pantyhose rubberband-ed on the spout of the bottle would do the same as the strainer and not need to be cleaned up. I may try that!
Hahahaa I cracked up at the hiccups, I love hearing you laugh it really brightens my day Mina, much love and light from Australia
You're so sweet, thank you so much! 🥰
Be safe !!
Hi Mina..
I am from India.
I love your paintings and your way of sharing ideas with all the world .
Love Billie Eillish playing in the back ground! And the hiccups! Lol
😂😂😂🥰
Definitely love your laugh💗
I was wondering how your paint always looked so fantastic when you poured!!! those lines you get and the definition - fantastic - thank you for sharing - Also - the hiccups were AWESOME LOL :) :)
That is just amazing, you are very creative love it.
Thank you very much for your text regarding Floetrol v PVA, ...you may well have saved me some time and expense , ....love your very informative vids , ...keep on pouring!!...👋
I'm so glad! Go have fun and pour!! ☺

@@MinaVillegasArt thanks so much:)
A quick note about the strainer.. wash it out right away, and wipe it really well with a paper towel. Dont let the Floetrol dry in the little holes! I learned this the hard way 😕 a friend suggested some pantyhose rubberband-ed onto the top of the bottle, then there is no clean up. I might go cut up a pair of hose lol good luck to you!
Thank you 🙏🏻 about to go mix it up now 🖼 🎨❤️😄

Thank you for this absolutely wonderful video!!!! 💗🎯💯🙋🏻♀️
Hi! Love your pouring videos! I wanted to offer a helpful hint. When you use a spinner, use a cheap disposable shower cap (50 for $5 on Amazon)
to protect the top. When that cap gets too gooky, just pull it off and put on a clean one!
Lol when I first started watching I was expecting to see a lil pup lol my mini schnauzer does those little woofs when she wants to be apart of wherever I am doing lol.
Thank you, Mina for the tutorial, I am purchased some Liquitex professional pouring medium but I wasn't sure what the mixing ratio would be......all of a sudden there you are sharing tour mixing ratio❤
I love your art work and you contagious laugh 😆 💖 😄
Thank you for being you and all that you do!
Have yourself a perfect day
Sandi
If you're curious what all 12 cups of paint were for, check out my 'Medallions' video 😉
there are so many recipes out there for mixing.... i love the consistency of yours though.... and "up to this line" is exactly how I roll...
Thanks.

Since the liquitex has varnish can you use resin once painting is dry?
I like the way you explain lol 🥰

Oh my god, thank you for all your videos, I love you work, I can see how confident you are while making your tutorials... How WE CAN use Liquitex pouring medium? thank you so much again.
😂 I can't believe you weren't cracking up the whole time.
Why do you use liqutex gloss medium and varnish? I haven’t heard any one say why. I am so grateful for this new recipe. Thank you so much!
2. Go slow
Tilt slowly. Let the paint develop. Take your time and be in the moment, don't rush thru it.
3. Think about color. Look around at color and see what goes with what, and figure out what you like. You're going to buy a lot of paint, and you will hate some of it after the first time. It's ok. (Use it as a basecoat 😉)
Like you're in love for the first or third time 🥰 dizzy thinking about color lol
**Be prepared for your art to take up a lot of space. Get a level and learn to use it (it's fun too) Have a place to dry more than one because it's hard to stop if you have paint left lol
That's enough for now lol have a great night!
😂🥰😉
I use the awatrol and I never come across with that big pieces inside 😅
Strainer is a great tip! Thank you😁👍
You can actually buy them at the Dollar Tree if you have one near you .

Is that too much together? hi from down Under 2 years later just wondering if you're still up and running with your show could you please tell me if you doing a really small canvas what's the amount do you do exactly what you do or do you make small amounts please. ✌️🌈🌏
I like my liquitext but a I prefer it thicker, what can I do?
You could skip the Floetrol.. but your paint needs to be able to slide and move.. if its too thick it won't move..
lmbo!!!!!!! Thanks for having the hiccups!! I needed this laugh!!! How werent you cracking up?!!!
Would the measurements be the same if it was liquitex paint?
Yes
Hi there! You were close! 16x20, then divide by 28.. so
16 x20=320 320 divided by 28 is 11.4 ounces needed for a 16x20
Is Flowtrow modge podge???? and is it absolutely necessary?
Floetrol is actually a paint conditioner that smoothes the paint (it is not Modge Podge).. we use it to increase the volume of paint we have after it's mixed with pouring medium. There are lots of different recipes, this is one that I like most. Lately I have been using Golden's Heavy Gel Gloss and Floetrol, which gives me a thicker consistency, allowing for more control.
Can anyone tell me what I could use instead of floetrol as we don't have it in the UK..
You can use Owatrol..
I love the word "futzing"!
😂 me too
please help, what is pouring medium and can it be used on ceramics ( bisque ?) thanks
@@MinaVillegasArt thank you very much ♡ Donna
How long does the paint mix last before you pour?
I'm an impatient person lol so I usually use it right away.. but once in a while I will have some left from a pour. I simply take a larger plastic cup and put it over the top of the cup with the paint. When I'm ready to use it I stir it up a lot and maybe add some water depending.. it will last a couple of weeks like that, depending on what your microclimate is like. Dont store the cup in direct sunlight either.. I hope this helps
Thank you! Yes the hiccups had me rolling! As well as the floutrol snot! 😉. And don’t you love scrubbing your hands when you the liquidtex pouring medium?
what's with the hiccups though?
Brava Mina 🙏😊
Adorable hiccups lol
what is the purpose of using the floetrol?
I'll pay closer attention today when I'm mixing to double check (I'm kind of on autopilot when mixing lately lol I tend to get in that 'consistency ' zone and the world disappears Haha see the hiccup paint mixing video for proof lol)
Everything that I've painted so far has stayed the same, I have no complaints.
You're very kind, thank you! 🥰 I hope you have an amazing day 🌞🌺❤
Regarding brush marks, left brained artist suggests a non-pilling soft fabric to rub it over, leaving no brush marks
I am confused why use pouring medium and floetrol? Can anyone help me with this?
Beautiful video. Thanks!
I watched your other "how I mix my paint", 20 times at least. I'm sorry I missed the hiccups 🤣 is an ex-bartender, I know a sure cure.🌻
How much cost it to make 1 painting?
Thank you, I need it that! Love the hiccups 🤣
Hi Mina, do you think you could estimate the ratio of pouring medium to paint (based on the Golden Heavy body that you demonstrated with)? Thanks!

Hope you and family are safe from fires!
How do you clean those strainers? I use them as well but they seem to never get fully clean even with hard scrubbing?
Hi Atlas! Cleaning the strainers is what actually made me stop using them. What I use now is a square of pantyhose and attach it to the top of the Floetrol bottle. It strains anything so you get good clean Floetrol and there's nothing to clean up!! The cap will screw back on with the pantyhose on there too ..
@@MinaVillegasArt oh okay yeah, I can try that..where do you buy pantyhose 🤔 😆
The cheapest way is to ask ladies if you can have them when they are done with them lol be careful asking anyone but your mom or sister though! 🤣 you can find pantyhose almost everywhere, try the dollar store or target or Walmart lol 😆
@@MinaVillegasArt Lol , Thank you that was actually really helpful! Though my mom doesn't wear them & I've no sister, no dollar store in hawaii. 😆 Can you imagine tho..

Is flotrol just PVA glue ?.
Hi Mina...you don't use silicoine? I know Floetrol gives you cells...,just wanted to make aure.
Lol...took me a few mins to figure out what that noise was...to funny...and FYFS...Very informative
I was so surprised to see your flowtrol like that. I have never had a container like that either before or after shaking. Yes l get the separation but never had those lumps.
Have you ever tryed using pva glue and water with your paints xxx
What was the white liquid that you first poured in before you put the paint in, was that PV A glue?
Liquitex Gloss Medium
@@MinaVillegasArt I'm sorry I thought I deleted that question because it was answered in your video
Thanks so much for this video!
😂😂😂😂😂hiccup😂😂😂😂😂hiccup😂😂😂😂😂hiccup - cannot stop laughing! I dont know how you kept talking without constantly laughing!
😂 The honest answer is that I did not really realize she had the hiccups until I said it 😂 I was pretty focused on what I was doing..
Just curious...is there a reason why you use Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish instead of just Liquitex Pouring medium?
Hi Megan!
Yes, because I like to use big canvases it's nice to not have to worry about varnishing additionally once they are dry. LGM&V dries with a beautiful luster without any additional varnish.
Great advice! Silly question can you use acrylic paint that you buy from hardware store?😱😱😱👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍💕❤️🇬🇧
Hi Maureen! If you mean housepaint, yes you can, but it's a bit different. You can use the DecoArt Americana Decor paints. Experiment and have fun!
HI Do you use distilled water or tap water..
Tap water
Your tutorials are great. I'm using your recipe now. Lol. Someone has the hiccups, poor baby. 😆
You're very welcome! 🥰
Wonderful information, thx so much!
So you put the pouring medium in the bottom so that the golden pains great that you're putting in mixes better and that's why you add the floetrol
Hi Gloria! The Floetrol is a paint conditioner that extends the working time of your paints. I recommend you watch my paint mixing video, the How I Mix My Paint Complete Guide.. ❤️
