Smith & Wesson SW40VE Sigma Pistol (with Spring Mod Plus) Review

  • Whats up everybody. This is an amateur review of my S&W Sigma. The reason i use the term " Spring Mod Plus" would be because i see so many people saying Spring Mod and only removing the pigtail spring. I removed the pigtail spring PLUS the outer sear spring, as it is a dual spring setup from the factory. The inner spring provides ample tension for reliable operation. I HAVE FIRED ROUGHLY 2500 ROUNDS FROM THIS FIREARM WITH THIS MOD EMPLOYED WITH 100% RELIABILITY! Please rate and comment. Thanks everybody and take care.

I got my SW40VE about 4 years ago and It has never misfired, jammed or failed in any way. I have had no complaints other then the trigger pull. I never really searched a fix out and just got used to it. No issues with tight groups. I just did the mod tonight (thanks to stumbling on this vid) and am excited to go to the range and try it out. Thanks.

I have 2 of the 40VE's, picked them up used for $200 each. I have performed the trigger mod (removing the pigtail and outer springs, and polishing the rocker piece), . Those mods made a GREAT change in these guns. I also ordered and installed the APEX tactical trigger mod ($25), which changed springs in the slide and a spring forward of the trigger. This reduced the trigger pull down to 4-5 lbs. I TOTALLY love these guns now!

Can you send me that apex spring your speaking of for 25 that drops the sigma trigger to 4or 5 lbs.. sorry for bothering you but I just bought the sw9ve from a friend and already took the springs out but its still a heavy trigger. .

oh I have one and at first I could not hit anything ... but after a few magazines later I could not miss my target at 25 feet and I did not change anything on it ....it was just good old fashion practice and in California there about 500 dallars and to me its worth every penny... and just for fun it's gone threw about 2000 round to date with no malfunctions I just love it straight off the box the best in the world at what it does......

just wanted to say thanks for the vid. i also work security and have qualifications tomorrow morning. i have always wondered about the trigger but thought it was me. i was able to do the mod by watching your vid. i now feel confident i will blow that test out of the water tomorrow. thanks alot

Just bought one of these and the trigger pull is quite rough. I took it to the rage and shot a few rounds and loved how it handled. It shoots just as good as my glock. If this mod works for me it may become my main carry. Thank you for the vid

Thanks for the video, dude. And thanks to everyone for the reliability updates after the trigger mod. I just bought my SW9VE, and so I don't have it yet but I'm waiting to test out the trigger. I'm still a little worried about removing the outer compression spring...with warranty and reliablity issues and all, but the updates are reassuring. I've read that SW will make the trigger less gritty for free, which helps with the pull too, but still it'll be 10 lbs or so. Thanks again.

Nice Video. I own the same gun and mostly carry it. Took me about 75 rounds to get used to the the trigger, but now I have no problem hinting what I want to.
I will definitely try the trigger-pull mod.

Just picked up a SW9VE on gun broker. Nice little 9mm. You are 100% correct about the trigger. Check out sigmatrigger.com. They sell a replacement spring and have instructions on how to polish the sear. The spring and polish job really improved this pistol. Do you have a link to the holsters for this line of pistols?? Sorry, I know this is an old post.

Hey buddy, to answer your question, a good buddy of mine acquired a .380 & a .40 hi-point and both of them were lemons. The .40 threw the firing pin at the range and the .380 had problems with double feeding and the mouth's of all the spent cases that were ejected were crimped and deformed concluding a weak recoil spring. Alot of people talk crap about hi-point's with no basis for their comments. I speak from experience. Take care

i completely agree with everything you said in this vid. I bought the .40 version from a friend a little more than a month ago. he had already done the trig spring mod tho. its NOT the best gun out there, but its GREAT for the value/dollar. Ive had 2 incidences with BAD ammo. 1:bad primer. 2:no powder (stovepipe). other than that, after a couple hundred rounds, flawless. the only downfall to this is that its hard to find accessories (barrels, sights, etc). THANK you for making this vid.

Just a heads up, there can be a problem with the upper pin falling out. It caused a slam fire trying to use some locktight to help keep anything from falling loose.

I have the 40 VE and I carry has my duty weapon. I like the firearm and the extra pull on the trigger. As far accuracy, not to brag from day one I am in the mid to upper 80%. center mass. It has served me very well. I know other LEOs that have them and cuss them. For me, it's the prefect firearm.

  • @jtm703

Had one for about a year now. Yes, the trigger takes some getting used to. No doubt. But it ensures that if my kids somehow get hold of it from the safe, they aren't strong enough to pull the trigger. Also, after getting used to the heavy pull, this gun is incredibly accurate. I can put all 14 + 1 rounds into the head of a reduced silhouette at 15 yards. Any gun with that accuracy is worth the money. And this one didn't cost much. Only 1 jam in the 1000 rounds put through it (cheap ammo).

Im a S&W guy and I carry this gun everyday. I asked S&W years ago why the trigger pull was so hard. They told me its because there is NO safety option on this gun and it is a little harder to pull to lesser to rate of accidental discharge. Just in case you were wondering why its so hard. Answer being, its supposed to be.

My buddy told me about the spring job to ease up the trigger pull, but I can find the video anywhere. I am a private security consultant and would love to be able to switch between my S&W's at work. nice gun hassnt let me down i own the 9mm, you cant beat it 4 16 round mags for $300 new. the gun shoots very very well most shooters tend to shoot low and left this is do to poor trigger control.
all that mod does is lightens the trigger reset teh hard trigger comes from the striker. this is a DA the trigger is going to be hard. most important thing is dont buy a $300 gun wanting it to function like a $1000 gun.
    nice vid

8lb trigger is the norm not exception for carry pistols. even when the manufacturer says its 6lb they are tested, higher.
for sigmas you need to remove the pig tail spring to get to 8lbs. stop there.

I can verify that these guns are certified pieces of sh*t. I was a deputy in Richland County (in South Carolina) in 2000. We had been carrying these Sigma 40s since the late 90s. Each and every time at the range , these guns failed miserably for everyone. If you got off more than 2 or 3 rounds you were considered lucky. Class 1 , Class 2 and Class 3 malfunctions were the norm. Finally, We went to the Glock 22 in 2000. It isn't even a comparison on how much better a Glock handgun performs than this joke of a handgun. Were very fortunate this thing didn’t get a deputy killed.

It fails to feed, fails to eject, double feeds and it wont hit a man size paper target a 10 yds! My dads is awesome. He was shooting his fine and i shot his fine bun mine, neither of us could hit anything! Now im stuck with it and ill probably never have the money to buy anything else lol. Been 2-3 years and havent even been close to having money to buy another, so im pissed off and ill never buy another s&w

Send it in to s&w for repair. I bought a used sw40ve a few years ago as my first handgun and had issues from day one so it just sat around collecting dust. I was pretty disappointed especially because it is a s&w who I have admired since I was a kid because of their revolvers. I just recently sent it to s&w because I had read that they will warranty the weapon which I had no idea. My pistol literally had failure to feed issues every few rounds. It was a nightmare! Well I called s&w and they paid postage too and from the factory. They also replaced the barrel and locking block. Runs like a dream now at absolutely no cost to me. Couldn't be happier with how easy they made it. Wish I would have done it sooner!

S&W will repair the gun, There is a lifetime warranty. I carry a $900 Sig for EDC but have this in my truck console. The front sight was off center and I found that the hole for the sight was stamped wrong. Sent it to them for repairs, no questions asked. I will buy from people who stand by their product.

Richard Adams i just actually sold it to a gun shop the other day. Because i polished the internals that they wouldnt fix it.. i didnt know that but oh well lol. When i polished the internals, it stopped the ftf and fte. The only problem left was shooting off target. I compared it to my dads (front sight and everything) nothing was different. I even used a digital caliper. But i finally got the money to buy a glock. Then i went to a different shop and sold my sw9ve for $100. Wish it would of been more, but it was a fair price. It had a lil damage on it
