  • The 18 Art Collective (18ArtCollective.com) formed in 2020 after 18 Central Indiana artists came together to paint an iconic Black Lives Matter mural on Indiana Avenue, following the police brutality protests in Indianapolis. The mural would be vandalized one week later. But The Collective decided to stay together, pursuing their individual art projects while also taking steps to make sure the arts community of their home city looked like them - to show Black and Brown children that the arts were not a predominantly white world.
The women of the Collective are being highlighted this week (Thursday, May 30) at the Madam Walker Legacy Center in Indianapolis. I hope you enjoy my conversation with two of the women of the Collective -- Amiah Mims and Shamira Wilson.
