The Holdovers is the best film of 2023
Now I know why *I should have liked* Asteroid City, though I only made it half an hour in and have no plans to revisit it 😂
Same I felt it was made in the style of Wes Anderson. It felt like, it was checking boxes.

I take Richard Brody's suggestions and usually enjoy films he recommends. Are there other critics people are following to help them choose what to watch? It would be interesting to know whether Richard himself reads other critics and can recommend.
No "The Boy and the Heron"? We can't all agree but IMO it was a masterpiece

The only one of these I've seen is 'Barbie' ( the only new release I saw theatrically in 2023), and appreciated it very much. A companion seeing the movie with me thought the political subtext was too heavy-handed, but I found the deeper existential themes on humanity and self-determination quite moving.

I like movie critics. Their expertise in the medium helps us with our options. People who have issues with critics just lack media literacy and completely mises the point.
I didn’t agree with his picks last year, but these I do. But, I can’t watch him without noting he looks like a mad scientist/unabomber/homeless guy….

The Iron Claw is the best film of 2023. Easily. Second best: "Air", third place: "Oppenheimer".

Astroid City that is so bad i threw it away. There barely is a story and the colors are manipulated in a way that it is unwatchable. If it not had the name Wes Anderson on it it would not even be in any top 50. Get a life dude.
I didn’t own a Barbie doll when I was young…won’t watch it today

I never owned a Barbie doll either (though handled some of my older sister's specimens), but I did see the movie, and enjoyed it very much. As Brody indicates here, the movie is about much more than simply Barbie.
