You say that because you proceed from an incorrect premise -- that audio is important to video manufactures, its not. Camera manufactures -- ALL camera manufactures -- put 95% of their efforts into the video. Audio get the other 5%. You're buying a video camera, not an audio recorder.

OK folks while I might not be the best of audio people I can suggest this. I am going to speculate that while the sound directly from the Mod Mic sounds tinny and worse than what comes directly from the GoPro (the stock audio probably is boosted to allow "warmer" sounding audio). It's probably being processed correctly through the GoPro so you can boost and modify it in Post. Think of the audio coming from the "Better" and specific mic is allowing better audio to be processed for after the fact. Remember different mics are designed to pick up specific audio for specific reasons. Kinda like the analogy how a shotgun and a rifle still do the same thing but the projectiles that come from it are designed to get different results. Make sense???

Yea if you don't need an action camera just get a normal one. Peopl normally get gopro for extreme stuff that mirror less can't do. You can't really compare these 2 cams they are built for diff purpose. Personally I felt thta go pro 8 was a waste of money especially since they release this hero9 which is wya btr. Hero 9 is now worth and close to perfect. I would buy the hero 9 and I think it would still be in the game after 10 years. But I don't have the money😂😂
Great time for photography. I normally shoot canon full frame for weddings but enjoyed my m50 for light travel. Transitioning to an RP for full frame sensor but mirrorless form factor. And like 8 batteries 😂 I wonder if this media mod mic is even a real shotgun mic. I know GP8 media mod isn’t even a shotgun mic in there. Interchangeable / replaceable lens is welcome. If the GOPro subscription really does replace your GOPro if damaged it’s definitely worth the price if that is in fact the case. When I buy new cameras I try to get warranty for it too.

I was planning to use this with a GoPro 10 on a drone for aerial video. I read a review that said the HDMI output doesn't work when it's recording. Is that true? appreciate your insight.
Great review! I just wish they put feet on the media mod so we can change batteries without having to take the gopro out of the mount. I mainly want it for using external mics.
Same here. I guess they needed it to make up for the horizon levelling with the Max Lens mod.. The GoPro still does better low light than the DJI Osmo action. Been waiting for an update to that and the Osmo Pocket. Hope they come out with them soon. I was about to get an Osmo Action over the Hero 8 due to the front screen but the Hero 9 answers that with a front screen of their own. If DJI comes out with a good low light performing one and still keep their filter attachment and lower price point, it will definitely eat GoPro's market share even more.
The osmo action original was a joke. On paper it looked great and I went with that instead of the eight. Lasted about 2 months and ultimately went back to GoPro.
Mics are effected by a lot of things from environment to proximity. He didn't state how far away he was from the mic. As you get closer, the sound will typically improve.

With the media mod still out of stock, go pro did something very questionable. The new firmware update has removed the audio input options, so you can no longer use the mic adapter for an external mic. Support says they’re putting together another update to fix the input / output issue.
Just go my go pro 9 and mic adapter! Luckily I came across post of people saying there go pro’s don’t work with the adapter after updating! And my go pro didn’t get updated before they shipped it just gonna keep my 9 with the firmware it came with!
@@TrigunV4S wish I could do the same. I got mine open box from Best Buy, and the previous person updated the firmware before bringing it back. I wonder if I can restore it to factory settings and fix that.
Great video but you forgot to tell us how you use an external mic. I have a RODE wireless I use with my Osmo Action and I was hoping to use it with the gopro 9.
Ta-dah! You get the gold star. Nobody knows what kind of mic you like or if audio is even that important to you. Never forget that. It's why what really counts is the ability to connect the mic that works best for you.

The Media Mod for both the Hero 8 and Hero 9 should have come bundled with the GoPro and not some accessory. I really liked the media mod and definitely got way more than $70 of use out of it but I figured it would be compatible with future GoPros and thus would be a one time buy that I would be using on future GoPro cameras. It is not a huge deal though, I plan on using the H8 for several more years in the future, but still, it should just come bundled together. If the media mod is going to be a separate purchase then there needs to be a little consistency on form factor, if the H9, H10, and H11 all use the same mod then its a much better buy.
The thing is that the media mod is not needed to attach an external mic, but it is a nice setup. It would take a cage and an audio adapter to accomplish a similar setup.
Thought the rear mic sounded best. Nice review. Thanks. Something to note... if you want an HDMI out, you HAVE to buy the Media Mod. They took that output off the 9.

Good review. Obviously for the microphone alone the media mod is worth it. If you want more youtube or television ready media mod is a must where sound quality is important.
I have somewhere between 25 and 30 hours of video shot with my media mod and had no issues with lost data. There was only one time when I thought heat was an issue and that was outside when it was over 100 degrees and I was filming for over an hour.
Did you encounter any water resistance / weather related issues when having the media mod attached? Have you encountered any general freezing of the hero9 unit?
I would be curious to know if Quick Capture now works with the Media Mod and an external (3.5mm) microphone. On my Hero 8, Quick Capture will not record audio with the Media Mod installed.
When using the Hero 8, I found the best audio was when I selected "stereo" and I thought that audio sounded ok. The mics on the media mod for the 9 didn't sound good at all and apparently you have to select either front or back but not stereo. Bummer.
I just got a gopro 9 and had to update plus I have a media mod. I'm not seeing any options to switch from front to rear mic. Were you able to switch or is it automatic? I'm using an external mic as well, but when I unplugged it for a shot and was going to use media mod mic I didn't see where I could switch it.

Its definitely not waterproof after u put the mod on. The audio still sounds terrible, I'd still use an external mic with aftermarket cases. Rode wireless go and micro still sound the best
It states in the included user guide that the Media Mod renders the GoPro non waterproof. It is Water-resistant depending on how much water it needs to repel (drizzle compared to complete downpour).

Thanks for this video! I just ordered a Media Mod and a motorcycle helmet chin mount. I have a Hero 9, and plan on doing some motorcycle vids in a few weeks. I'm hoping a lavalier mic will work to catch my voice inside the helmet. Is there a trick on removing the Hero 9 battery door? I don't want to break it.
What would be good is for a review of rear screen protectors that are suitable for the Media Mod. I fitted a screen protector to the rear screen of my GoPro, and what I noticed was that it formed a nice "invisible" bond to the rear screen. HOWEVER when fitting it into the Media Mod, the screen protector got pushed out of line by a millimetre or so as it wouldn't fit under the MM's bodywork. The result was an air bubble between the rear screen and the screen protector. Some recommendations for slightly smaller screen protectors that will work inside a MM would really help and would be some top advice.
By the time I got all the mods for the 8, the 9 was out. Got the 9 and filming with it already. Disappointed the mods are out of stock. Glad the 9 media mod has the wind cover and rubber port covers. I was hoping for quicker easier battery and sd card changes with the media mod on
I found the media mod to be pretty good but for some reason when I have it on, it goes straight to a Media Mod setup and won't let me change it to anything other than 2.7k. I don't have this issue if I don't use the mod...strange.
Does anyone know If the HDMI output playback on the media mod is in full resolution of the recorded video file? Or does it max out at a certain resolution?

Question, filmed with a MM for the first time just yesterday. Included a Wireless Go in the MM. Sound was great, but the actual videos that were recorded were not compatible with a former version of Premiere. Prior videos shot with just the H9 work perfectly with the old Premiere version. Did I miss a setting in the H9 to video with the MM?

May I ask as I work a lot in the garden with it and those openings seem to have dust / soil: how would you recommend to clean that is safe for the electronics please 😇 Also, the drain microphone (designed to drain water that is not supposed to be a door/latch): Unfortunately as a beginner user of the device it was tried to be opened and consequently broke: How would you try to fix that? As last, Is the microphone behind that door giving a real microphone function? I know a problem has a solution ;)
For the door, you could perhaps glue it back on very carefully. And if your equipment gets dusty. Compressed air can get the most of it out. Then what I do is either use Q-tips or a soft cloth to get all the stuck on dirt sometimes all dampen it a little bit if need be
I was holding it out in front of me about 2 1/2 feet. I just use the audio track from the video fail so there’s no distraction and you can just focus on the sound quality

to be honest, the only reason most of us are buying the media mod isn't for the mic, its to use the horse shoe mount TO CONNECT ANOTHER MIC

Waste of money when you use the media mod on with the 8 or the 9 the camera overheats and you end up losing footage.

I thought it was a fair test out the box , great job thanks for sharing. I like the media mod on the Hero Black 8 out on the trail. I'm going to experience the The Hero 9 with the media as well , have a nice safe trip.

Thank you for sharing this video. Im new to the media mod. Does the mod reduce the amount of water resistance of the GoPro (I.e., if I get caught in a rainstorm)? I’m guessing if I want to submerge it, I would need to take the mod off? What external mic would you recommend for the hero 9? Thanks for any info
Its definitely not waterproof after u put the mod on. The audio still sounds terrible, I'd still use an external mic with aftermarket cases. Rode wireless go and micro still sound the best
It states in the included user guide that the Media Mod renders the GoPro non waterproof. It is Water-resistant depending on how much water it needs to repel (drizzle compared to complete downpour).

Will the mod be "waterproof". Basically when it rains? I see it has sealed ports.

Thanks for this review. I was going to buy this media mod for the microphone but after your audio test, I realized the audio it’s really bad, compared to a broadcast mic. I'd rather buy a professional external mic.
The mic onboard mic sounds juristically better. Inside outside. Everywhere. So now im faced with? Should i buy the media mod?
The built in by far is superior. Lmao it doesn’t even require any particular skills to distinguish that the media mod sounds kinda like fake filtered. Great video by the way! Thx a lot m8 🙏🏻

Thanks for this video! I just ordered a Media Mod and a motorcycle helmet chin mount. I have a Hero 9, and plan on doing some motorcycle vids in a few weeks. I'm hoping a lavalier mic will work to catch my voice inside the helmet. Is there a trick on removing the Hero 9 battery door? I don't want to break it.

What would be good is for a review of rear screen protectors that are suitable for the Media Mod. I fitted a screen protector to the rear screen of my GoPro, and what I noticed was that it formed a nice "invisible" bond to the rear screen. HOWEVER when fitting it into the Media Mod, the screen protector got pushed out of line by a millimetre or so as it wouldn't fit under the MM's bodywork. The result was an air bubble between the rear screen and the screen protector. Some recommendations for slightly smaller screen protectors that will work inside a MM would really help and would be some top advice.
By the time I got all the mods for the 8, the 9 was out. Got the 9 and filming with it already. Disappointed the mods are out of stock. Glad the 9 media mod has the wind cover and rubber port covers. I was hoping for quicker easier battery and sd card changes with the media mod on
I found the media mod to be pretty good but for some reason when I have it on, it goes straight to a Media Mod setup and won't let me change it to anything other than 2.7k. I don't have this issue if I don't use the mod...strange.
Does anyone know If the HDMI output playback on the media mod is in full resolution of the recorded video file? Or does it max out at a certain resolution?

Question, filmed with a MM for the first time just yesterday. Included a Wireless Go in the MM. Sound was great, but the actual videos that were recorded were not compatible with a former version of Premiere. Prior videos shot with just the H9 work perfectly with the old Premiere version. Did I miss a setting in the H9 to video with the MM?

May I ask as I work a lot in the garden with it and those openings seem to have dust / soil: how would you recommend to clean that is safe for the electronics please 😇 Also, the drain microphone (designed to drain water that is not supposed to be a door/latch): Unfortunately as a beginner user of the device it was tried to be opened and consequently broke: How would you try to fix that? As last, Is the microphone behind that door giving a real microphone function? I know a problem has a solution ;)
For the door, you could perhaps glue it back on very carefully. And if your equipment gets dusty. Compressed air can get the most of it out. Then what I do is either use Q-tips or a soft cloth to get all the stuck on dirt sometimes all dampen it a little bit if need be

I was holding it out in front of me about 2 1/2 feet. I just use the audio track from the video fail so there’s no distraction and you can just focus on the sound quality
