    My grandma took care of a lot of orphaned sheep and I still remember those weeks of the year vividly. She took them inside, raised them amongst the dogs, even let them sleep next to her, wrapped up in a blanket. Poor Theo - may he Rest In Peace. ❤

    So sorry about Theo. The mom may have realized something was wrong with him to reject him. As far as the wool, you might check with spinners and fiber artists in your area. Sandi Brock, a sheep farmer on UA-cam couldn't sell her fleeces in Canada, either. But after her followers pushed for something out of the favorites, she started having it processed and selling finished items, yarns, and felting kits. Instead of going to large commercial mills, it goes to a smaller, 'cottage industry' mill. She sells out of products very quickly. I think your fleeces would make some very interesting yarn. Marbled/heather style.

    • @fredrika27
      @fredrika27 Рік тому +3

      This is so true! I tried to order yarn last year, but it all sold out so quickly! It is a bit pricey. That said, when one's making a scarf or socks for Nanna who is in care, the little extra paid for top quality makes the product last longer. I am going to try my luck this year to see if I get anything!

      As a person who works with wool, perhaps you know? Before sheep were domesticated and could be sheared what would happen to the wool? Would it have continued to grow and get longer each year? I heard the shearer's explanation about what happens when the sheep isn't sheared. Is it at all accurate to visualize overgrown walking piles of wool that was always dragging on the ground and maybe even trailing behind them and was probably very soiled and full of burrs, nettles, twigs etc.? Could they have drowned under the weight of their own soggy wool if they ever fell into a stream? Another BBC video on UA-cam mentioned how washerwomen or people who fell into cold streams could easily drown because of the shock of hitting cold water and the enormous capacity of wool to absorb water.
      Perhaps before domestication they had very short lifespans?

    • @lynnbetts4332
      @lynnbetts4332 Рік тому +3

      @@paulrosa6173 There are 2 kinds of sheep. Hair sheep and wool sheep. Hair sheep 'blow' their coats and shed out their undercoats, like dogs do each year. I don't raise sheep, so I'm not familiar with their history of domestication. Not sure how far back it goes, but many hundreds of years ago, wool was gathered from briars and limbs where the sheep would rub to rid themselves of it. Wool sheep were developed and domesticated for them to retain their wool, so it could be sheared and processed. No more scrounging for wool to process to make their clothes. And yes, if not shorn, it can even lead to their death from overheating, skin infections, and inability to get away from predators. Various breeds have different characteristics, fineness, crimp style, etc. I would love to see them talk about the history of the ancient breeds of sheep and how they came to be.

    My grandfather raised sheep, sheared the sheep and sent the wool off on the train to be cleaned and turned into wool batting for whole cloth comforters! A new money maker for the estate would be selling whole fleeced to spinners and knitters. Maybe Mapperton could host a gathering of spinners that tell others how to turn raw wool into yarn. I do know people who raise sheep just to sell the raw wool fleeced to spinners/knitters.

    Love the multifaceted Rewilding Project. What some areas of New England here in the states do is have a ‘sheep to shawl’ festival/contest where parents with their children especially and adults watch sheep shearing done with immediate cleaning, dyeing, carding, spinning and knitting a garment from that wool by various shearers, dyers, spinners and knitters….of course it last all day long…..but it is reviving the fiber arts to keep these valuable skills alive creatively into the future. Wool is especially healthy next to the human skin & wonderful usage with natural fiber creations instead of plastic or synthetics which do not allow the skin to breathe!

    😔😭so sorry about the lamb. You seem to have a different understanding of horses than we do here in Montana in the United States. We owned six horses on 10 acres. And we did rotate them through different paddocks because the horses pull out the grass by the routes and then their poo burns the grass. It ruins, the paddocks. Soon they’re nothing but mud. We made our girls go out and scoop up the Pooh, and clean up the paddocks every day. Also, we had to be careful not to leave the horses in the green grass all day as it gave them bloat or colic and sometimes gave the horse a Torsion! Very scary indeed! Those are very cute horses!

    I had a much beloved kitty that died of the same thing, caught too late. I was sad for quite a while and still sorry he didn’t have a longer life. I’m sorry for everyone at the loss of the little lamb. 😢
