I did just what you said and my 2010 Honda Oddyssey is running like brand new. Got the code for free at Oreilly’s, went to the dealership and bought 2 sensors for $85. Thanks.
Thank you sir. Helpful and informative. I got the MIL and code P3400. I checked the oil level and it was pretty low... just barely touching the end of the dipstick. Oil life is at 20%, but that's still a bit concerning. Usually when I change oil I drain out 3.5-4qts, so the engine is known to consume .5 -1qt over 5,000 miles. I added 2 quarts and now it appears to be a bit overfilled. Oh well, I'll be changing the oil soon anyways. I cleared the code and it stayed off for a few days and came back. So I ordered the new sensor and I'll replace it and hopefully it fixes the problem for good. Also, I googled the service bulletin 13-031, and it states that P/N 37240-R70-A04 is the part to use for either front or rear cylinder banks. I assume they are the same sensor, but have different PNs for factory assembly and inventory or something.
Thank you and I appreciate this post. Live recently ran into that piece of p3400 code on my wife's van. I'm going to start with this oil pressure censor.
Just wanted to thank you for this video. Honda 2010 Ody EX-L with 114G miles. I had a code P3497 and the pressure switch on bank 2 was stuck off. Oil level was low as well. Eco mode is now working and everything feels normal as it should. I have a service A15 coming up this week from my mechanic. Thanks again. ~ Roger
Thanks Josh! And the Manual says Bank 2 but also says Front Bank in other places, so this helped too! Figured I'd replace them both in any case. Having the same issue, but I couldn't find the O-ring part number anywhere!
@@michaelehart6333 In description he states bank 1 Front Cylinder head is A01, While Bank 2 Rear is A04. He doesn't explain it well, but he changed Bank 2, which is Rear and close to radiator. Getting the P3400 on my Pilot 2013 EX-L, dealership is telling it is a 'Oil Pump Release Valve Pump Spring' that needs to be replaced. Over 1K to replace (labor intensive, they say). Check engine and VTM-4 light come on sporadically - mostly the CE light. This part swap looks doable, just cautious on the taking their advice and causing irreformable damage and not taking their advice on the spring.
mtb3r there is a service bulletin for 2013 pilots sb #13-055. This specifically states to replace the relief spring. Did they reference this SB? Also did they state there were any other codes?
mtb3r I would actually recommend getting a VCM muzzler and this will eliminate your problem that is occurring according to the SB. I recommend everyone get a VCM muzzler they are $100. Look into it and post any ?s. In my opinion reading the SB you are not causing any harm. It is a brief moment of high oil pressure which activates the variable cylinder management spool valve. This video is for that sensor. The vcm muzzler will not let the engine activate VCM which is a very good thing. I actually get 1/2 mpg better.
Thank you for the SB! After their Diagnosis ($), they stated it was P3400 - "Oil Pump Release Valve Spring" - assuming this spring is the same as what's in the SB. No mention of any other codes. They say it is labor intensive and apparently costly to do. Ugh.
Oddly enough, I was just reading that muzzler info on piloteers.org: www.piloteers.org/forums/70-2009-2011-pilot/106481-vcmuzzler-ii-disabling-vcm-faq-s.html
Well I needed a oil change 3500 miles ago and that yesterday these codes came up. Do you think the needed oil change is what caused these codes to come on? I got the oild change but codes still in. Do I need to reset them and see if they come back on
They didn't come on because you needed an oil change they came on because you were very low on oil. It is very important on honda 3.5l v6 with eco mode to check the oil level. Continue to drive and they should go out.
@@ygbodybuilder3023 it keeps eco mode off. Eco mode turns cylinders off and is supposed to increase mpg. But it destroys the engine and increases oil consumption.
Thanks. Perfect video and links to help me fix my P3400 code. FYI for those searching, the replacement switches are interchangeable (37240-r70-a01= 37240-r70-a04). Very easy fix once you have the tools.
Nice video, I got the P3497 code a few days ago on my '11 PIlot EX-L complaining about Bank 2 which I understand is the one closest to the radiator, $40 at my Dealer for both these exact part numbers you've listed here. Did you have to grease the o ring or anything? Also how did you know how tight to go? I don't have anything to tell me 16lbs. It looks really simple to replace and they quoted me $190 out the door.
bank 1 is near firewall. Which is the one he DIDN'T REPLACE in the video. Closer to the intake tube, driver side. That's the one I was getting. The other code P3497 is for Bank 2 which is the one he replaced in the video, close to the radiator or as he describes "front cylinder head oil pressure switch p/n 37240-r70-a01". Which is the one he didn't replace on the video. Driver side, by the intake tube.
I only got P3400 code which is the pressure switch closer to firewall but do you recommend replacing both sensor bank 1 and bank 2 or just whatever the code is calling which in my case just the pressure switch bank 1? Also are this two pressure switch has the same part number for bank 1 and bank 2?
If you replace the oil pressure switch and the code still come back. Replace the top part of the assembly that you replace the gasket. The VCM switch inside gone bad.
I have a 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour and I got both codes today. My boyfriend left to work before checking oil level so I hope that is all it needs (its at 20%, and 1100 miles to go before next oil change). What parts will I most likely need if the oil level is fine?
I did just like on the video and the next day check engine came back on I don't know what else to do I don't want to waste so much money should I buy the solenoid instead?
Josh, I am getting a P3400 - Generic code and the description is "Cylinder Deactivation System" in Bank 1. Is this the same thing as "valve pause system stuck off"? I called the local Honda Dealer and asked if they had p/n 37240-r70-a01 and was told that this part is discontinued and that Honda is now using the a04 for both front and rear.
Just got done with this. This was so easy. I was a little worried that I didn''t have it tight enough. 16 torque felt so easy. Clearing the codes with the Torque app didn't work for me though. I unhooked the negative on the battery for a minute and that got rid of it. Now to figure out my radio code again :) Thanks a bunch, Josh!
mark Hamilton 16ft lbs isnt very much that is why included it in the video. I didnt want people breaking off the sensor!! On my civic i have to go to a website to get the radio code not sure about the pilot.
Its pretty simple for Pilots 2012 and later. All you do is hold down the Power button until it comes on. Apparently it checks the S/N against the VIN while you're doing that. Or something like that, but that's all you need to do.
Hi Josh, My vehicle is 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L, I got both the p3490 and p3497 at the same time. Got the oil changed for my vehicle so i believe the oil pressure is OK (since the valvoline people diagnose the car and i can't see anywhere that the oil pressure is low in their report). Do I need to change both of the switches and if yes can you please help me with the part numbers. Thanks in advance.
Ishan Agarwal have you tried to erase the codes? Looks like there is a service bulletin due to oil consumption on your vehicle. Please do not go by the oil % reminder. You need to check your oil on a schedule and add as needed.
Great instruction. I had high hopes that this would work. I've tried several things. Anything I change seems to work until I hit higher speeds. Generally around 70 mph then the engine light with p3497 comes back on. Onto another solution.
I was getting error p3497 so i changed my sensor like you did and after a day the error came back on. What should i do next? I read there was software update that needed to be done.
@@xXxvalerie4xXx Yes, the video gave the proper solution and this cheap fix worked for me. I highly recommend giving it a try as it’s fast and cheap! The error is gone and hasn’t come back in 8 months or so. Go for it!

Josh, this is great. I'm going to try this tomorrow with my 2014 AWD (VTM is also disabled). Any tips on the torque tightening? I don't know how to measure: as long as it's manually tightened well enough, would that do it?
great idea. just watch for leaks when you swap because I am assuming you will reuse the oring until you get the new switch. As far as the torque, it is only 16ft lbs which is not very tight. if you break a sensor off it will be a real pain and possibly expensive. So just barely snug the oring provides the seal.
I swapped them today and so far, the light hasn't come back after resetting! Maybe the bank 1 sensor just needed to be tightened? Fingers crossed it doesn't come back, but if it does throw me a P3400/3497 down the line I'll replace! Eco mode is back, so is VTM4 AWD, & CEL is gone for now. No more FWD wheel spin off the line (forgot how much FWD Hondas torque steer).
Codes on my pilot is signaling both the p3400 and p3497 codes. Does this mean I need to replace both switches or that it is a problem with the oil level?

@@jochute i just changed my oil a week ago and did not make a difference. I am worried about the long term effects of p3400. I just changed my spark plugs recently as well and now i am afraid it might get damaged again due to VCM.
P3400 usually means it won't let it go to ECO mode so you shouldn't be ruining anything but it sounds like the spool valve that it is hooked to is bad.
@@jochute nice catch, i didnt erase the code the last time, just unplugged the battery for 2 hours, drove again with no CEL on, everything was fine, and ECo Light was working finr, but after around 30 miles the CEL and VTM-4 light turned on again, do you think that is because i didnt erase the code? I can try tomorrow in Autozone to erase it and drive it again.
Try erasing it, if it won't go away you might need a new spool valve. But just the top portion. Let me know. The spool valve is very easy and around $75
@@jochute thanks buddy! Will try today or tomorrow, that started to happen when i replaced spool valve gaskets.. i dont know if i made something wrong..
@@jochute buddy another question, i need to make a 200 milea trip, i think its safe to do it, worst case will turn on again CEL, and wont activate ECO mode right? But car still will be smooth, am i correct with this theory?
So I have a p3497 code and put a new oil pressure switch in and the code still comes back and actually causes the car to jerk before the light turns on and then starts to rumble and when i turn it off and turn it back on it fixes itself until i get up to speed then it does the jerk again and rumble.
Hi Josh. Great information. I was wondering where did you get the parts? Did you just go to the dealer and got it straight from them or did you order it online?
Josh, Nice video! Big Question: You said that your error was the "front bank". Then you pointed out the 1st switch near radiator saying it was technically the "rear bank". You pointed to the other switch near the windshield/firewall and said it was technically the "front bank". I'm confused because you proceed to show how you replaced the switch toward the front, which you stated earlier being the "rear bank". Why did you replace a switch at the rear bank (near radiator) when your error code read "Front bank"? ( My error code on my '09 Pilot read: P3400 Valve Pulse System (VPS) Stuck Off (Bank 1). Bank 1 is next to the windshield because it's always associated with cylinders 1-3. So I am going to replace the bank 1 switch.) Please explain. Thanks Josh.
Dr. Steve Wexler yes during the video i got my banks confused. Rear bank is bank 1 which is the sensor i replaced for p3400 but it was too difficult for me to film. Front bank is bank 2. Thank you.

How much was your sensor?
Thank you and I appreciate this post. Live recently ran into that piece of p3400 code on my wife's van. I'm going to start with this oil pressure censor.
Just wanted to thank you for this video. Honda 2010 Ody EX-L with 114G miles. I had a code P3497 and the pressure switch on bank 2 was stuck off. Oil level was low as well. Added 2 quarts of oil, went to honda and got the parts, changed out the parts, cleared the code with my module, and went for a test drive. Eco mode is now working and everything feels normal as it should. I have a service A15 coming up this week from my mechanic. Thanks again. ~ Roger
Did you replace the part on the firewall side or the o e close to the radiator? I have the same code
Thanks Josh! And the Manual says Bank 2 but also says Front Bank in other places, so this helped too! Figured I'd replace them both in any case. Having the same issue, but I couldn't find the O-ring part number anywhere!

Either way, I changed bank 1 on mine because I got P3400, which states Bank 1, which is closer to the firewall. I also replaced the oil since it works together with the switch. Good Luck!

BANK 1 IS FIREWALL SIDE (RIGHT SIDE OF ENGINE)
BANK 2 IS RADIATOR SIDE(LEFT SIDE IF ENGINE)
Quick question - the sensor on the driver rear - thats the one that just says "on cylinder head" correct?
I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean. What are you trying to accomplish?
Thank you fir sharing this. I hate VCM. I BOUGHT A VCMUZZLER FOR MY HONDA.
Ive still yet to get off my ass and get one. can you email me a link to that
Getting the P3400 on my Pilot 2013 EX-L, dealership is telling it is a 'Oil Pump Release Valve Pump Spring' that needs to be replaced.
Ugh.
Oddly enough, I was just reading that muzzler info on piloteers.org: www.piloteers.org/forums/70-2009-2011-pilot/106481-vcmuzzler-ii-disabling-vcm-faq-s.html
mtb3r if you are in a southern state you should get the additional. Orange resistor i believe.

Will a svcm eliminate further issues?
It will eliminate most issues on the pilot. Not necessarily this specific issue but it is a good idea

Bostero79 i used oil on the oring. 16ft lbs is not very tight so be very easy torquing it. Was that your recent post on piloteers?
Yes, I posted on Piloteers, lol. Small world. I replied to the original poster.
Here with a 2011 honda pilot. Part # for mine is 37240-R70-A04 for both front and rear same oil
How much oil does a 2009 pilot 3.5l take ?
I always use 5 qts plus a splash. Check it often they burn oil. Don't go by the oil life indicator
2014 Honda Pilot P3400 is part#
37240-R70-A04
Or
37240-R70-A01 ?
bank 1 is near firewall.
My says bank 1 P3400
Should I change the one that you changed or the one that is near the windshield?
One next to windshield.
Once the new parts are installed how long will it take before the light is removed?
You may have to delete the code or remove a battery cable if you don't have a code reader.
I don't know which one is my problem. Can the same sensor fit for both banks?
Which code do you have? Yes I believe both are the same now
I only got P3400 code which is the pressure switch closer to firewall but do you recommend replacing both sensor bank 1 and bank 2 or just whatever the code is calling which in my case just the pressure switch bank 1? Also are this two pressure switch has the same part number for bank 1 and bank 2?
Looks like they are the same part number. You can replace both. I have replaced one and never had the other failed.
If you replace the oil pressure switch and the code still come back. Replace the top part of the assembly that you replace the gasket. The VCM switch inside gone bad.
Thank you for video! Very helpful
Would this be the same on a 2009 Accord EX-L? P3400
Should be. The part number maybe different. Check out hondapartsunlimited.com.
I have a 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour and I got both codes today. My boyfriend left to work before checking oil level so I hope that is all it needs (its at 20%, and 1100 miles to go before next oil change). What parts will I most likely need if the oil level is fine?
Emma Solis you don't get both codes unless the oil is low pretty much. Of course there are exceptions.
I did just like on the video and the next day check engine came back on I don't know what else to do I don't want to waste so much money should I buy the solenoid instead?
it could be the solenoid, for troubleshooting you could swap the solenoid from the other bank and if the fault follows you know it is bad.

Its pretty simple for Pilots 2012 and later. All you do is hold down the Power button until it comes on. Apparently it checks the S/N against the VIN while you're doing that. Or something like that, but that's all you need to do.

Josh, this is great. I'm going to try this tomorrow with my 2014 AWD (VTM is also disabled). Any tips on the torque tightening? I don't know how to measure: as long as it's manually tightened well enough, would that do it?
I'm going to start by swapping them to see if the code switches to P3497 for bank 2. Then the orig bank 1 solenoid was faulty & will replace.
great idea. just watch for leaks when you swap because I am assuming you will reuse the oring until you get the new switch. As far as the torque, it is only 16ft lbs which is not very tight. if you break a sensor off it will be a real pain and possibly expensive. So just barely snug the oring provides the seal.
Thank you so much, sir! Your advice is precise and incredibly helpful.
Do you have a patreon account? You're saving people hundreds each time!
Lasted a couple days! :) Got 2 sensors and 2 orings for $58 from Brown Honda City in Maryland...replaced one bank and so far no CEL!
Codes on my pilot is signaling both the p3400 and p3497 codes. Does this mean I need to replace both switches or that it is a problem with the oil level?
I would suggest looking at the oil level first. It would be very rare that both sensors would go out at the same time.
Will the check engine light resolve (or turn off) itself once problem is resolved or does it need to be reset?
