I'd have to disagree some, in that I think this is top tier for them. The production is a little broader, but the hooks are just so crisp that it plays on a strength Daughter was less comfortable with. I'd call it their most accessible album, and the one I'll use to try to get friends into them first

It feels like Indestructable Machine and the Boy Crazy EP still seem to be the Lydia I tend to listen to the most, the documentary on the band highlighted both her talent, but also her major weaknesses, the fact that most of her impassioned songs sound a lot alike, and most of the ballads also do, most of the lyrics seem like a quick pass from writing to recording (which can be great) but I would love to see her develop more as a writer. Not to mention the obvious alcoholism and bad relationship decisions that give her part of her intrigue but also was unhealthy and unsustainable. Daughter was the first album after that I think, and it was quiet and safe, it felt like trying to escape those images, but also she seemed to be holding her tongue for the first time instead of letting things fly. I would say maybe she was looking for a hit single, but none of Daughter was very catchy either (her least catchy to date). I will listen to the new one soon, despite everything (even my criticisms) I am still on the train.

The "Hey there" without the "folks" is still surprising to me 😂
