He changed the face of piping forever. His compositions are already standard tunes in any session. I was devastated when he tragically took his own life. An inspiration and by all accounts just a really nice guy.
I played with Gordon in Dougie McLeans band in the late 80s and it was a pleasure to share stages with him. A real gentleman and a genius, as humble as they come also. RIP Gordon, you will be sorely missed forever.
Why the dislikes? You don't click on a piping video if you don't like the 'pipes... and what can someone find to fault with Gordon "The Master of Piping" Duncan???
Not just an amazing performer but a amazing composer, too! He placed the bar very high but great to see that many pipers are following his footsteps and innovating in the spirit of our time!
Gordon Duncan What a remarkable talented young man. Thank fully theres more people here with access to see the brilliance of this Gentleman and his musical prowess.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I was lucky enough to meet Gordan when he played with the "Thistle & Shamrock" concert series back in the early '90's. He visited the bookstore I worked at, I got an autograph from him. He was so very shy, didn't seem to realize just how great people thought he was.
Played with Boghall when we were in a pub in Blairgowrie with Vale of Atholl many years ago. The pipes were being passed around for solos from players of both bands. The pipes went back in their box after Gordon played. You can’t follow perfection!
Marvellous recording and a great resource for young pipers. The Taybank in Dunkeld, particularly on a Thursday evening, is worth a visit. Some of his music lives on there.
@Rugby1989Scot Very serious i think! nowadays theres nothing to dislike, but back when Gordon first started making his mark, his tunes were way out there to say the least. Theres a famous story that after Seamus heard Gordon playing he stood up and said something like "If this is the face of Bagpipe music nowadays... then im taking up the fiddle!"
Im in NORTH WALES, 47yrs old, inherited my dads bagpipes from when he was a piper in the black watch, he never spoke of it, ive been learning them on my own with no help, north wales has no pipers but me, i want to ask any one one question, HOW DO YOU DRAKE IN A CAIN BAGPIPE CHATER REED, please any advice will get me over this stumbling block, thank you, DAVE CALLUM BEGG.
Hey there, hopefully you've sorted this, but look up any pipe band near you. Many offer instruction, often for free. You'll have a much easier go at it, rather than trying to learn on one's own.
I've got the music to Dolina MacKay in front of me and he's using grips/tarlouah's in the fourth part that aren't in the sheet music I have (The first three parts appear to be accurate). Plus, he repeats each part, which again isn't how it's written on what I have. Maybe he rearranged it?
kemckay part of what makes Gordon’s recitals interesting is that he rarely plays any tune, including repeats of parts, exactly the same twice. Even his music books, I believe, are more of a guideline to his music rather than exact transcriptions of his performances
No, it was serious. Seamus disapproved of his style of playing and his innovative approach to piping. IMHO history has decided who had the rights of it.
His 4th part is good.. he adds in maybe one birl, and plays birls on beat 7. He is not playing any grips or taorluaths... I think he puts in a dre on the E... The music is there though, and the embellishments, well...I guess that is more bang for your buck as only Gordon could deliver ;-)
Gordon died because he chose to end his life. He didn't die because he OD'd or because of alcohol poisoning (if that is what your incoherent sentence is attempting to allude to) he made the decision himself, and no matter what anyone's opinion on that may be, it was Gordon's decision, and Gordon's alone, and we must respect him for that. It's not for us to question his reasons, none of us lived in his shoes. so out of respect for the man and his music, preach somewhere else

I can't understand the dislikes....Gordon is a LEGEND..and he will remain forever as one of greatrst pipers in History
jealousy
@@TheFirstDidjeridude Of course!!!
Dislikes possibly came from "Seamus"🤣
@@ravensong9030 🤣🤣🤣
People dislike because they are jealous.THIS MAN WAS AN INCREDIBLE PIPER. TALENT IN BUNDLES. LOVED BY MANY WHO APPRECIATED HIS PLAYING ❤

+Loam Bart Thanks! Perhaps it was 6 jealous pipers? ;)'
+TorkGirl8 I have never disliked anything Gordon did, but this particular performance was weak for him. he seemed tired and unfocused..
+TorkGirl8
The dislikes are all from Seamus MacNeill.
+Appolo Geticks You feel this performance was weak, tired and unfocused? I don't agree. Listen to those perfect drones.
+Alasdair Caveney lol

It's sad that his genius isn't recognised outside of the world of piping. He was the Paganini of the bagpipes.
He is widely recognized. He is still admired in Spain

Love the comment.
Just read his bio.... How tragic and how many of us would done anything to help him!! May his memory be eternal! This music is AMAZING!!!
The bad boy of piping to the purists and an absolute genius to people who love piping in all it's forms.
Lost at such a young age. A pure genius and inspiration to so many.

Absolutely incredible piping! He was a genius! So sad he died so young.
Great that the video shows the amazing fingering dexterity of this great piper
Absolutely phenomenal 💪💪💪
nothing but respect for him who gave his life for the bagpipe!!
That ending to the reel set is epic
Honestly, the best piper in my opinion.
Agreed!!
RIP Gordon Duncan.

Had Seamus got a hearing problem, he might have needed an ear test
He should be recognised in the honours list for his services to piping
QUITE SIMPLY. THE WORLD'S GREATEST EVER!! R,I,P, GORDON,
Does anyone know the tunes here? Have only just discovered the genius of Gordon Duncan.
Amazingly gifted piper, ...
Makes me want to cry, can't believe he's gone...
omg just leaned about this man ,,,,great piping
Master of pipes
Absolute genius
One, if not the greatest
I saw him playing in Scottish power once. It was at the Worlds 2002 or 2001, I can't remember exactly
A dear pal, greatly missed xxx
...and composer. RIP Gordon.
Awsome playing indeed...
Not much to say, the lad was brilliant. Such a shame he couldn't get help for his problems.
blown away
Legend. RIP mate
Fantastic
Makes me wanna practice!
Dang, this ol piper misses him...RIP Gordon...

right around the 6 minute mark, he enters another realm
Amazing

He was a guest in Macgesyer
amazing! He will be missed! How was he as a teacher?
Acckk you wanted at 4:30... that is Dolina MacKay.
@TheGriffinPiper I suspect it was Seumas MacNeill!
Was his argument with Seumas serious or just frendly rivalry? I just can't see what there is to dislike about Gordon's playing.
No, it was serious. Seamus disapproved of his style of playing and his innovative approach to piping. IMHO history has decided who had the rights of it.
Like an Arsenal! Drones make not even a flutter......steady.
I think we should call him THE gordon!!
Unreal.
What are the tunes he plays beginning 4:30 into the video?
nice song
Does anyone know the name of the 1st tune of his second set? It sounds familiar but I can't quite place it...
The Old Woman's Dance... in one of Donald MacLeod's Books
whats the first jig ?
The Master Piper
Has anyone noticed that his finger movement does not look human? They move at a speed inmpercible by the human eye

RIP
I like the rendition of Dave McNally's jig "The Pisa Project".
pogchamp piper
anyone know all the titles...?
Mount rushmore of pipers. No question
his likes will never be heard again
E_X_C_E_L_L_E_N_T
Vale of Atholl
Your point is?
This is more like 1994
Prodigal
I recorded this video.. Chris Ere did not....
Why Gordon, why!

the reason why he died like a whole lot more drink lesson stop drinking get right with GOD WILLIAM
Excuse me? That sentence is completely devoid of all grammar, you sound like you are having a stroke.
Gordon died because he chose to end his life. Couldn't agree more Ian.
