Vintage Roland Tape Delay the Chorus Echo: Is It Worth It? | Roland RE-501 and SRE-555

- The RE-501 and SRE-555 are two vintage tape echo machines from Roland-- both created later in the lineage of this family of units. With a myriad of effects available within the units, they have a mesmerizing visual component under the hood as well. With a serpentine tape constantly moving within the box, there is some magic and unpredictability that contributes to its mystique. With warm analog tones, these units are wonderful for synths, guitars, and more; but at retail prices nearing $2,000 or $3,000-- are they worth it?

There’s something about these machines that’s just so warm and natural. Thanks for the cool vid.
Appreciate the comparison. I've been trying to figure out which one of these would be the best unit to buy. I think that rack mount would look awesome in my vintage roland and rack from that era. Awesome job we appreciate your hard work making these videos!
Thanks for such a great assessment / impression of the 501, funny how they can get away from you but your knob twiddling kept the dwell and oscillation under control . Great stuff !
I spent years trying to get rid of wow and flutter from analogue tape, and now I cant get enough of it! (In miniscule amounts of course though)
I wish you good luck and development your channel! Very good and high-quality material!
Thank you!!
lol at the stickers on a jupiter 6
Got mine for free in the early 90ties. Still have it. These are demanding to maintain, but cool to have and play with it. Prices are now even higher. I think they are not worth the money. They even started producing them again (not Roland). Cheers! S
Great video! Interestingly enough the line 6 DL-4 and the microkorg were in production for around the same length of time as the space echos!
I got mine 3 mouths ago and i really enjoy it when paired with my juno.
One cons you could have pointed-out is that it is tricky - on a live situation - to sync the echo with the BPM your working on: it’s all by ear !
Maybe we will see in the future a Midi mod to adjust the rate of it ?
Which Juno? I had a 6 and it was amazing
The recent echo fix efx-2 allows you to control tempo via cv!!!
It also has cv control for feedback.
@@jrcenina85 seems good alternative though ! I was wondering is there any way to do the same on the Re-501 ?
@@gauthiersoubirous2706 you should hit up the dudes at echo fix. Depending on where you’re located, they may be able to assist or point you somewhere
I have a 301 40 years old amazing
Got one for 500 around 2010.
Awesome review!
Very cool video
Thank you!

2:15 MAESTRO is pronounced My-stroh not My-estroh. The best Maestro effect for studios is the original Tom Oberheim college thesis Ring Modulator. These Maestro Ring Modulators have CV-in and sound amazing. The 1971 Demo record for it doesn't even scratch the surface at what this ring modulator can do.
Do you like these better than the classic 201 zach?
Yes :)
@@asoundlab just bought one based on your say so ha...tape delay is one of the few things I'm not well versed in, apart from using plugin versions to make long trance fx. I mean I know the theory, not the practice. But I got offered an sr-555 at like half it's current value by some old guy who was retiring. At first I was a little bit like ok it's just a digital delay unit but analogue, sure its nice and warm but, slightly underwhelmed. However when playing with it a lot you do get to love it, the character and smoothness . You have to spend a bit of time setting it up right for each type of synth tone you are putting through it, more than you would for your average digital delay I think. But it's cool. I actually like the sound on sound feature which a lot of people felt was useless. Not a massive fan of the chorus on this unit but it's OK. Spring verb is decent in small amounts. Bearing in mind this unit probably hasn't been serviced or even had its tape changed in decades. It's particularly lush on like late 70s early 80s brassy chords and stuff i guess because it was designed for that. I actually want a 201 now though so I can do stereo and ping pong tricks with them. I think the difference in character would make stuff sound super wide if they were hard panned. Better start saving my pocket money though. Cheers for the review.
Dude, give it a rest already. You’ve turned vintage synths and gear into a weird infomercial.
Yeah, I wish this music shop would have more police bodycam videos, funny animal videos, or clothing try-ons.
