Great tip! Worked like a charm on my 2018 RT. This one is certainly not intuitive, never would have figured this out alone. Bought my bike used, it has some aftermarket battery connections on it which further complicate removing and replacing the battery. This tip extremely beneficial. Thank you!!
Just received a new YUASA battery for my '14 R1200RT and needed this video for a confidence builder. THANK YOU for the great tips! UPDATE - I changed out a 6 year old OEM with the new battery this morning. I took my time and everything went as planned. I'm going to keep the old battery as a back up since it still shows 12.6 volts. Thanks again!
Do you have a meter that tracks or records Max and Min. If so, clip leads on battery and press the starter switch. It should record the lowest Voltage under load. If you see a significant drop, you may want to discard. I have a R1200GS Adventure with a 3 year OEM battery, if I take off the charger at 13.7 volts and hit the starter, it drops to 7.9 volts. I only get one shot to start the bike.....it has to be replaced.
Thank you so much! I have a new to me 2018 RT and wanted to put it on the trickle charger for winter (in a heated garage). I could not get that dan cover off. I ended up running the leads to the negative and the positive terminal (behind the red cap). But now I know how to get the cover off without breaking it!
Yes it did help! Just bought a new GS1250, tried to verify the type of battery that was installed but coud never replace that weird cover !!! Thank you.

Thank you for sharing this, I was totally bamboozled until I watched your vid 👍
Thanks for the clarity on installing the plastic retainer. The bottom pin had me puzzled!
Thank you I was struggling until I watched your video..
Thank you. I had been struggling with replacing the plastic cover That was a great tip/demonstration.
Worked like a charm to get the cover back on with the tip install one side first. Thanks for the video.
Brilliant! Thanks very much for this I spent an hour messing about with that cover yesterday.
Thank you! Currently losing my mind over this. Gonna have some coffee and go back after it!

Thank you. Just popped a new battery on and that had me baffled
I ended up sawing the bottom pin half off and it installed fairly easy. Rubber strap keeps it secure.
Very useful vid - thanks and greetings from the UK
Thank you! I was about to give up
Thanks for posting this, I was struggling! 👍

Glad it helped!!
I literally just did this yesterday, but I have to redo it because I put the rubber straps first and I put the cover over the straps
Thank you. Great help. It gives me an idea of what I need to do. Holy crap! BMW should have done something more convenient for the users.
Thanks.
Thank you
Good vid, thanks. What battery did you use for your replacement? I am trying to avoid the ridiculously expensive OEM battery for my 2016 RT
This was just a re-installing after winter storage. I bring into the house during cold months and put on tender.
The battery cover ? is nothing like my 2014 r1200rt lc, in the UK ?
Looking at REP-ROM and MicroFiche is appears the 2014 battery door looks like this. Sorry if this is not the case.
Great help, thank you
Glad it helped
