Rescuing an A40 Mack from the Woods Part 2!

- After far too long we are back to the Mack! I received permission to get back on this property so I could continue the process of getting this A40 Mack out of the woods.
I want to thank everyone who commented on the last video and provided a great deal of information about this truck that I did not know. I really appreciate those who did that!
It has been raining a lot here so it has become too swampy to drive back there but as soon as I can I will be back making more progress. A friend who is more experienced with a chainsaw will also be with me to help fell the bigger trees growing through and against the truck. The last thing I want to do is drop a tree right on the cab of the truck....
Every trip here I am getting a little closer to getting this Mack back on the road!

Always nice to see the old iron getting saved. To answer your question about the floor, virtually all trucks had wood floors, even into the 70's.
That delectably gorgeous old Mack truck there, beautiful old dowager lady, one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen! I swoon ❤ !
Now I want a part 3!
Awesome project! Thanks for the video and good luck!
Our 1945 EH Mack had a factory wood floor. You could probably check with a friend of mine, John Heckman. He is an engineer with Mack trucks. His father was an endline mechanic at the macungie plant for 44 years.
Years ago I would have suggested a full frame off restoration, but now that I'm older & wiser, I totally agree with the mechanical restoration, you will be able to drive it.......& park it outside & not have to worry about the weather messing up the paint!!!
I don’t want to sound pushy but I’m going to please step up your game we are all waiting good luck with that Mack love it 👍
She's a BEAUT!! Get a working cummins from another junkyard Truck and jam it in this one with a new back clip [from a newer junked truck] with the newer brakes and transmission or whatever. You can get a working truck from a junkyard for like 5k or so... get one of those and rob it for parts to get Macker on the road with a couple of stacks, new brakes... paint... she's a Beaut!
part 3 is highly anticipated
Waiting for part #3
Glad you're saving this one, lots of work ahead but will sure be nice.
Really like this type of project. Dedicated car/truck guy for staying at this extraction. I'm about to go to a west Michigan site where I guy has held on to this fathers old semi cab collection. Good luck with the finished project.
Tim W. Zeeland, MI.
I've moved stuff like this before and you will probably have issues with the brakes being rusted or froze up. I would remove all of the tree around the axle. You are going to have enough issues with the flat and sunk tires along with the old brakes. You don't need that tree fighting you too. Great video, glad to see it being rescued. I look forward to more of them
I agree I can't wait to get back to it!
Take the tires off and cut the tree
Epic find, my friend. Dig the classic styling of American built rigs from yesteryear. Definitely 2 thumbs up. 👍👍
Looking forward to seeing more of this restoration project!! I'd say get a dozer or a big rollback and get it out of there. Good luck!!!
Thank you!
SO COOL!!!Please, please, please restore it. I visualize dark green body, black fenders and dripping with chrome. No rat rod BS.
Are you gonna pay for all that chrome?🤔 It's easy to spend someone else's time and money. I'd just like to see him get it running and roadworthy, then shine up what's there.
Looks like a beautiful day to be out in the woods, messin' with an old truck. Good times.
Looks like it will be sitting there for the next 40 years
What an episode! Good lead in and history/narration. The A models, as far as I know had wooden floors, but there is a way that you can drop the floor so that you have a little more room. I’ve seen it done. I don’t like wood floors in a rig and you can always add your own metal floor and give it the support and style that it deserves. Getting it out....cut out what you can and burn the leftover wood with a torch, a little at a time. Then you can pull it straight out. You still need plenty of pull power! That will be a big job either way, but very rewarding. Is this your first junk woods save? I love pulling a truck out of the woods...I’ve done it a few times and it’s always a little different each time.
Any progress on the restoration? I know it would take a ton of work.
You may need to drag it out of the dirt and onto solid ground using a vehicle with trax, like a dozer or backhoe. Just a suggestion. No matter what you use, you'll definitely have to back the brake shoes off to even have any kinda hope of the hubs turning after all these years. Best of luck!
What ever happened with this? Would love to see an update.
My old boss when I was a teenager had one of these sitting on his property years ago. Sadly he cut it up for scrap. Nice to see one being saved.
That’s a nice ol Chevy PU too
Very cool that you are rescuing this 1940's Mack, please do us all a favor, please restore the truck as is, no rat rod etc. I remember how excited I was when we drug our 48 KBR8 International out of the junkyard.....keep us posted on your progress.
I will definitely keep you posted, definitely no rat rod plans here, that's not my style. I would like to do a mechanical restoration and preserve its looks. Only 40 years of weather can create that
@@MikeGuy993 Yeah!
Nice job man. It's getting closer to getting out
From the looks of it the sheet metal is in far better shape then my 1940 Mack EE was. The E series predated the A series but is very similar. The trucks had a wooden floor so you could remove it to get to the parking brake adjustment and the master brake cylinder
Save as much as you can to make a pattern later down the road
As far as getting it out a lot of other people made good suggestions definitely jack it up and get boards under it then it's going to be make it up as you go along
Good luck look forward to seeing your progress
Just keep in mind be careful with everything when you take it apart parts are hard to find for these trucks
I learned the hard way with mine lol
Wood was common on/in trucks before say 1960. It's good insulation and strong enough. The companies were saving steel where they could. One of my starter trucks was a "2-story Pete" from the 50's with wood floors all the way across. Looks like worm drive rear axles ...
Use larger trees to anchor a winch, what were once called 'Holmes' trees', because Holmes wreckers needed them.
I highly recommend that you locate the nearest chapter of the ATHS (American Truck Historical Society), and join if it is in your budget to do so. I know it’s an intangible costs, but the members are all a bunch of guys who have already done and are doing what you’re doing, and their knowledge could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in mistakes. I don’t know what part of the country you are in except it snows there, LOL but I think a lot of the chapters have more than one A model Mack on the roster! Good luck and happy restoring!
My Dad had a old Mack truck as a logging truck in Northwestern Montana. When the original engine finally got old and tired, he swapped in a Ford 477 gas engine, and went for several years more!
Very cool! I'm very interested for when I can start digging into this engine
Also nice '75 Chevy you have. Looks like you're doing rust repair on it.
I’m sure you have a lot of good ideas from followers all adding their advise. Sorry to see permission to access the Mack doesn’t come too often. Hopefully you have a garage to work on it so progress will move quicker. I also have a suggestion, clear all trees from around the truck. Then if it’s possible to have a Landoll back up to it and drag it up the bed just as it is. You will have to use a piece of equipment to drag it off. Put it on some jack stands and get er going.
I figured the only way to get it out is to drag it, I will be working on seeing what kind of equipment I can get back there
Brave man standing next to the wheel airing it up
I noticed that the wheel had bolts in the spokes, holding the outer rim on. That's better than a split rim, if the tire explodes.
Waiting on part 3
Trying to get there as soon as I can, I will most likely need a small dozer to get it out, but I need to try and do that with out tearing up the property per the owners request which I completely respect. I just need to brainstorm the best way to do it
I have moved dead vehicles, mainly agricultural ones though, I have a 4wd telehandler, like a JCB Loadall, and generally pick up and lift as much as I can to move it.
AWESOME!! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR PART II
When will see part three many you should unholy the rear tiers and cut the trees get a good impact tool and a torch to beat up the pub nuts😀
What about an update on this old Mack?
Still working on it, I have limited access to the property, and I'm hoping to get there this winter when the ground is frozen to hopefully make pulling it out a little easier
@@MikeGuy993, best of luck! That old Mack sure looks like it's worth saving and putting back on the road.
@@MikeGuy993, any luck getting it out?
shes 5 tons 1940-1953 - Mack produced marine engines for many years. "The Mariner" engines were used in yachts, pilot and work boats. The ENDM 405 (FW) was produced from 1940-1941; a total of 16 engines were manufactured.
Boa sorte você vai precisa 👍👍👍😎
Great patina
Cut down the outside tree, remove the wheels & cut the inside tree. It probably only has spring brakes on one axle, if you can't cage them just cut the pushrod. If you use a cut-off wheel don't cut all the way through because it will bite the disc & maybe you as well. Cut two spots about half way through then beat it out with a hammer. A cable on a tree to a snatch block on the truck then out to your pickup should move that old girl. I've never used a leaf blower on a rescue before but nice touch!
Молодцы что восстановили эту машину!
Повалить деревья на двух гектарах разве это восстановление автомобиля ?
I drove a54. A40 for over 40 years
Did you ever get it moved?
Any more happen with it?
Never updated again. Might still be sitting there.
Where is Part 3? Or don´t you ever want to rescue this truck?
Please be careful with those rotten tires and those split rims. They are bombs waiting to off with too much air pressure taking your head along. Love what you are doing.
I thought that they may be split rims and I've heard the stories, I will make sure to be careful!
Share this in the Facebook group Steel Dash Mack's. All the knowledge you'll ever need is there about these trucks!
I will do that soon, I would love to know more!
Mike, what is happening with this truck???
Tandem axle flatbed Wrecker
Most that size have a 24-foot bed
It'll drag it up on its back and haul ass 👌
A40 mack truck sitting there long time chainsaw cut the tree hope you get the truck running soon take men power look forward to new videos soon be awesome bless you friend stay safe
Just came across your videos. Is there a part 3? 🇺🇸
Any updates?
Por favor , corten esos árboles y remolquen ese viejo y bello Mack .
Yea the floors were made out of wood. And Some big trucks even the frames of the cabs was made out of wood. Great old Mack
Thanks!
@@MikeGuy993 . Your Welcome...
Hi! What about the A40's part 3?
That's a realy nice project!
hey that's a cool truck
To see an update video of this truck
Great to save a good old Mack , and I am anxiously awaiting the next video . Any idea when that may occur ? I have a " 55 " B61 and a " 62 " B422 , but I did not have to dig either one out of the woods !
I'm hoping to get there this winter when the ground is frozen to hopefully make dragging it out a little easier. I have limited access to the property so unfortunately it's a little out of my control. However I remain determined!
@@MikeGuy993 That's great ! Stay with it.....well worth the time and effort !
@@MikeGuy993 how about an update?
the breaks are probably froze up solid, so keep that in mind
Nice truck. Jack it up and put dirt and some planks under most of the tires. If the wheels are locked up it should slide to get you started. Good luck
Any chance of getting back to the Mack this spring?
That's the plan!
Is there a part 3 and 4?
There will be this spring!
Hi is there a part 3 to the A40
Mack Truck ???? It has been
over a year , up date would
be better sooner rather than
Later 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😅
Did you ever do anything with this? Lotta work but it could be beautiful.
I have not been able to get back to the property yet but I will be back and will have an update video!
Is it still there?
We still waiting on the next video, where is the Mack, did you get going?
I guess Bigfoot or aliens abducted them...
Hi, what is with Part 3?
Hey........what has happened to your Mack project?
Still in the works, it's not on my property so I haven't been able to get back on the land yet. However, I will be back!
@@MikeGuy993 great, really like to see a cold start? or drag er home! Thank you for responding!
GOD BLESS!!!
When is part 3 coming out?
Get a couple of dayton wheels, with hard tires on them and change out the front wheels,. they still make those type of wheels, only the new ones are tubeless.
That's great thank you!
Man when are they going to be a part 3 I thought this was so kool to see it pulled out and work started on it
I want to get back there as soon as possible! I just have not had access to the property but I will be back and I will get it out of those woods!
What did you do with it...
I have not had the opportunity to get back to the property yet but I am working on that!
@@MikeGuy993
Would you be interested in selling it...
This is great, keep it going, you will gain many subs. Guys like twinstick garage and EZrider have excellent followings, looking forward to more so we can share with many others . Thank you 👍
Thank you! I'm working hard to be able to get back there soon to get it out
Is there a part 3 coming up soon???
Yes I am working on it, just haven't had the opportunity to get back to the property yet
@@MikeGuy993 I don't know where you are, but I'm guessing this ain't the best time of year to do it!
Where is part three?
It will be coming this spring!
Did you ever get the Mack out of the woods??? :)
They had wood floor and restored some guys replaced the floor with hardwood with a good finish real nice
que pinte y arreglen queda bonita
how long had he been standing there?
We need and update
I live near an old junk yard that is loaded with rusted vehicles dating back to probably the 40s. If I had the funds, I would stroll through it and find a project, but they are all in very bad shape. Kind of sad too because there is a very strong chance that all of them will remain there until they rust into dust.
Been a year hope all is well
You haven't posted any new content for awhile. You okay, bro?
Did you get it out ? Is there a part 3?
Don’t think that they are tube less back then
that's gonna take some buffing out
Amazing you can still see the original signwriting of the company Schappe construction Versailles Ohio. What type of engine and year model is this. Good work for saving this truck
Where’s part III?
It's coming! The ground has been to wet to be able to get back there. But as soon as I have harder ground I will be back there!
How many months till part 3?
Unfortunately I am only able to go when I have permission from the property owner but my goal is to get back as soon as I can, but it should be within the next month!
@@MikeGuy993 really want to see part3 but after 5 months ,I gave up thought nothing ever happened.
Good job mate
I think you should really remove all of that tree stuck around the axle
As others have said being sunk in the ground and brakes more than likely locked on will be a challenge
Possibly a dozer or 4x4 loader and or back hoe would be a huge advantage
I have an Aussie built Bedford 6 tonne truck that the handbrake was accidentally left on only for 6 months and I seriously can’t move it with my 4x4 Mazda Ute
I'm liking the Mack, the Chevy is cool too. So I subscribed.
Where does the DEF go in??
The motor looks like a Mack 401
I would have removed the tree on the outside of the rear wheels, removed the wheels, then had easy access to the one next to the frame
Wait next video!! Thx.
Nice A series. I have a A51T. Email the Mack Museum with the serial number and they will send you all the build information. They accept donations to help keep a float.
Thank you, I will definitely be reaching out to them
separated from bead don't matter, it is not tubeless
