Not years later. This was recorded in the 60's by Flatt and Scruggs. Earl Scruggs was insistent on playing more modern material whereas Lester Flatt wanted to stay traditional. It eventually led to their breakup.
Leaving from Ft Campbell, Kentucky. Clarksville the the closest 'city.' Hopkinsville is the next closest city. Well, that was the case when I was stationed there during the cold war. All the areas right outside the gates on 41-A were unincorporated at the time.
This was also the only 'protest' song the Monkeys ever recorded, since they were literally the first corporate band. They weren't allowed to play controversial music.
Big Flatt and Scruggs fan here. I can listen to Lester sing any day any time, and this is very good...BUT the Monkees did it best. Lester and Earl were no longer playing hungry..just cashing in on the folky rock stuff for the college kids. It is a nice slick Nashville studio recording for its time, though. Way to play the melody on the old hound dog guitar there, Uncle Josh.
I have a question, I live in Clarksville, TN. I know Flatt and Scruggs played at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville so who recorded this first? the Monkees or F&S?
+Donald FenestreMarek Sorry this song was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for the Monkees. They also wrote the Theme and several other songs for the Monkees as well as had a successful career before and after the Monkees.
If you're from Clarksville then you know what is there where someone might be leaving on a train and never coming home. I lived in Clarksville for almost 2 years after I left the Army; loved the place and the people, but eventually I had to go back west to my home.
First: Blow their ears off with a weird piercing supposed to be Train Horn..... oh man my unexpectant ears!! 😭😭 Second: Great music, i want to dance 😂😂
Not sure about this - sorry. I'm a Monkees fan, typed in LTTC and came up with some others that I'd not heard so I thought I'd take a listen. I guess because I'm a Monkees fan, the only one I can hear singing is them.
45 Anos Sem Lester Flatt e 12 Anos Sem Earl Scruggs
You cant go wrong with this song no matter how you do it comes out great!
A rock song recognized by Bluegrass, years later again! LOVE IT!

I think the "flavour" they play this in lends itself nicely to the lyrics. A nice take on the original.

This song was not on any album. It was a special recording by Flatt & Scruggs in the 60's. I think it was on a '45 though...
FROM THE ALBUM 1964-1969, plus
I never knew this was a protest song till just recently.
It's about a soldier going off to the vietnam war, I think.

The Monkees version came first, but Nesmith did NOT write it. It was Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart.
