Wow!! Rhett your slide tone on the opening track is almost as good as Josh Scotts. You have been practicing.

Hey guys, love the show and I'm happy to be a Patreon. On on the NAMM topic. I agree that a Music-Con would be awesome for musicians and I'm all for it. In fact, I would love that to come to the East Coast. In my opinion, NAMM is about merchandisers finding new products to sell and it's all about vendors. That shouldn't go away and it can't really be substituted with video. Just my two cents. Hoping to see the Shoyles truck at NAMM this year.

Also, I give Zach 9.2 Shoyles for his Shure SM7B. It's the perfect mic for home recording anything!!

This UA-cam is perfect timing for me...I want to record vocals, guitar, bass and some basic beats. I have GarageBand and a SM57 so there’s no holding me back now. Cheers and thanks...9.75 Shoyles, guys.

In 1969 I first recorded myself on a (borrowed) very small portable mini reel to reel from Japan. It would not play back without speed wobble and at a slightly higher pitch. About forty years later I used a desk top and an external video camera borrowed from my daughter and made a DVD. No post production possible, no special lighting and a using dynamic microphone from 1976 (straight into the microphone jack). My recording interface was a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter. Had I arrived? Well, no one one can ever really get there because "there" keeps moving. Learning to do the best within budget limitations is where art lives, in reality.

What a nice surprise to hear my name mentioned, thanks for that. Zach, thanks for the Star Trek phone and Rhett, we gotta talk about the Rhythm Circuit because it is one of the greatest tonal tricks in the book. I absolutely require it on Jags and Jazzmasters, just a world of dark clarity at the mere flip of a switch!

Since Zach mentioned sm57s possibly not being great for bass, I just wanted to jump in and say that I've always been happy with sm57's for upright bass (mic'ing the bass side f-hole). Carry on.

Loved Zach signing off with the “I Love You Man” Paul Rudd: Laters on the menjay. Rhett cringe-laughing and getting annoyed was icing on the cake. This is why I bought 2 mythos pedals and counting. 1:20:55

One thing that can improve sound capture in a room mic even in a boxy room is paying attention to placement. Make sure the source is closer than 1/3 of the distance to the mic of the distance to the point of reflection. (or the other way around if you want to mic the reflection)
In some cases, I've had mixing success by nudging tracks through time into phase for an offending frequency.
This can be fantastic for drum room mics. I've got a pretty large attic with angled ceiling. I'll keep overheads (typically AKG c2000b pair ) in a modified Glynn Johns and then an omni room mic about 50 feet out and squeeze it. You can use this down in the mix to provide a great feeling of space and in a faster section, you can fly it in to coincide with the kick or snare transients and it gives a really uncanny effect.

One thing on the RAM topic - if you're going PC, and you go with an AMD CPU, then RAM quantity isn't the only important thing; RAM *speed* is important for low latency operation. It's less of an issue with Intel CPUs, but...you want a minimum of 3200MHz RAM, with no more than CAS 17 (lower is better with CAS latency). Basically, get the fastest RAM you can afford; don't skimp here, and make sure you enable XMP in the BIOS.

The Namm idea is basically moving the show from an industry show to a consumer show (e.g. CES vs Comic-Con). Most industry shows offer different types of access, and there should be some way to combine the industry and consumer areas in music to create a cool hybrid model. The question is how to make the consumer portion profitable enough to justify the cost.

I remember the first audio for vehicles and boats was a 4-track player, later replaced by the 8-track player. 8-track players were the hot ticket and more vehicles were broken in and 8-track tapes and tape decks were ripped off, there was a big market for hot 8-track players and tapes, later replaced by the cassete players. Main issue was many a 4-track, 8-track and cassete tape was eaten up by the deck, and that was so upsetting. The CD eliminated the eating of tapes as long as the CD ejected. Nothing worse than your favorite tape getting eaten by the deck!!!!

1:40 the complaint spawns from the immediate change in pace. going from slow to hustle n bustle in a day can stress you out. add an order everyday and you can build up to hustle n bustle no problem and its not stressful.

Need 8 Tracks? Skip over that 'Bear Ranger' that tons of people use, and get a new Tascam..
..or used within budget. Never heard of Tascam? That's actually a good thing, they spend tons less on ads, and what they save goes into the quality. .

What kind of amp do you use to drive you monitor speakers and how do you connect to your pc? Do you use a high quality computer sound board? I have a 2 channel Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, into my pc. From my pc's RCA jacks, into a consumer stereo amp and non monitor speakers. I often wonder how much difference it would make having a small set of real monitor speakers. I don't think I've heard any real discussion on this. Thanks!

That’s a great rig. Really love it. I’ve got an AC15 myself and a Jazzmaster. However I hate to say it but no Rhythm circuit is a hard sell. You lose the Jazzmaster feel without it. Everything else is excellent and speaks to me. If you had the rhythm circuit it would be a 10/10 from me.

Great topic. A while ago I found myself thinking, "where do I start". Maybe someone can benefit from my experience:
I've used a dual core, 4th gen i5, 8gb of RAM, 128gb SSD machine with ableton and it will hold. Now I have a more recent computer with i5 still, and still 8gb of ram, also SSD, but now 500gb of it
Most demos of mine consist of a stereo channel for drums (either programmed or live via stereo track), 2 guitars, 1 bass (all through a stereo behringer umc204hd interface and into amplitube 4 or 5 which is free and sounds great), 1 (stereo) keys/synth track. 5 tracks total and I think getting THAT right took time for me... More than that would've been too much for me at the time.
All things considered, the only thing I purchased was the interface, which I got used in great condition for 100 USD from reverb. I already had a pair of akg k44 or something headphones.
The next upgrade for me is precisely an 8-channel interface for drums.

Great advise Rhett basically you need 3 things reflectors deflectors absorbers but if you have none you can do a trick not while recording but when mixing and than you don’t have to rely on what you are hearing in the room use frequency analyzer to separate your mix from kick to bass from vocals to guitars some of them are free, run a single track look at the analyzer most of them let you take a snapshots you can screen grab then run other instruments-in the same frequency range and just separate them by eq ing

    • @buskertv7138
      @buskertv7138 3 роки тому

Oh btw frequency analyzer should be set on master track and not individual that’s how I prefer you can try otherwise

Cassettes SUCK! Sound terrible and I hated rewinding and fast forwarding is a pain in the ass. Only cassettes I had were ones made from the radio (LA had a radio show on Sunday when they would play full albums without commercial - learned a lot from that show) or a recording of a friends LP or to take in the car. Would never have purchased cassettes when I could have bought a LP.
