My rig these days is a Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 36 direct out into my Apollo twin interface played back on my studio monitors or headphones. It is so pro I love it. I haven't used my cab and mics in like 2 years. I can get great tone at any volume and it makes recall much easier without having to worry about how a mic was placed if I have to redo something later. Also the recording quality is so clean without having to worry about room sounds, noise floor or my dog barking or anything. Iv'e gotten so many compliments on how "professional" my guitar recordings sound, even before being mixed at all. Would definitely recommend.

Amp pedals are the same as overdrive (as far as shaping tone) which is what I do - straight from guitar (any instrument) through pedal chain into my tascam. Mix in audacity, voila! Sounds great!

Great video! One option is to use pedals / preamps + IRs. Your Favorite preamp + IR loader like torpedo CAB M or a plugin. I recommend the following pedals as preamps: Revv G3, Revv G4, Tech 21 GT2, Friedman BE OD, MXR 5150, Wampler Pinnacle, Pinnacle Deluxe V2, Sovereign, Flamma FS06,
Great tube preamps include Victory V4 series and synergy modules.

Tried out the line 6 helix, Kemper, Neural but they just didn't sound that good to me. The Fractal Axe FX III though sounded great (used a friend's one for a little while). Have one on order. I guess you can get the FM3 if you want to save some money and don't need the additional inputs/processing. Decided on the Axe FX III instead of the Waza and amps since it allows me to get some great amps that would be hard or impossible to get and saves me quite a bit of money since it also model lots of great pedals too. For bass I just use my Bergantino Forte HD, it is like a Trickfish 1K on steriods, plus Bergentino's HD cabinets are incredible. Just my opinion. Maybe the new version of UAD or Waze will make it in eventually too.

Nice video Mitch.. Wow, a plethora of options these days.. playing live in the 90’s, I was using a Hughes & Kettner Red Box.. was kind of amazed that it’s still around. I had a 50 watt head and cab for monitoring on stage, but ran a cab emulation signal back to the PA for a more forward guitar sound in the mix. Eventually switched to stereo rack effects (guitar oriented quartet)..
    Happy New Year!!🥳😎👨🏻

One area that can age the tubes are the loads that take the "audio" off the speaker and load the tubes silently. That ages the tubes like the volume is way up. So not passive on loading.

I’m actually surprised you guys said about using a small/micro amp. I use a Nux mighty plug and run the headphone out to a small bluetooth speaker, and to be honest... it doesn’t sound bad. But for a more professional sound I would REALLY recommend an audio interface, because noise is a problem on a small speaker. It’s especially more prominent when trying to record bass on a tiny speaker, lol.

I think I've finally found the perfect setup for me. Peterson Strobe into EP Booster into Strymon Flint into Iridium into USB mixer split to my DAW and Bose L1 Pro 8. I'm convinced that would cover any situation. I fully understand that nothing will identically replace the feeling and response or interaction between a guitar and a loud large speaker tube amp, but how often will the average player be able to do that? Just in case, I also have an amp. But since I got this setup, I haven't used it.

Seriously Rajiv, he's a bloody savvy customer fair dinkum, mate, that's straight from the horses bra. Wise guys are a dime a dozen here in Oz & been 'round 60 thousand odd years, dead-set bra. Has nothing to do with the guitars; but the attitude you originally presented, simply because I stated my preference, not a fan of the look of the lack of headstock.

Thanks for the information. Is it possible to do a video on Headphone choices, and, or comparisons? Is there a difference for the choice of headphones when hooking up directly to your amp compared to hooking up to your audio interface? Is there a better choice for amp use, compared to audio interface use? And which headphone choice would be better for the application it’s use for? Meaning, what make of headphones are best for amp use and what make is better for audio interface use? The reason I’m asking this is because I’m looking for a good quality headphone to plug in the back of my amp ( I have a couple of different amps) and while shopping I see headphones listed in: Studio use, DJ headphones, and Headphones. Prices can be the same in each category I’m lost. I’m sure others are too. Thanks
