    Goog luck with Henry! :) I was diagnosed with Type 1 when I was 13 months old, back in the 1980's when we had no strips, or fast acting insulin. I have managed by diabetes for over 35 years, with no complications so far (thank God). It's not easy but you can do it, I"m sure! Good luck! :))

    My three year old son Levi was just diagnosed with Type 1 on Thursday. He LOVED watching Henry get his sugar tested! Levi said, "He's just like me!" He also wants a pump now :-) Thank you, Henry and family, for letting us see what you do everyday. You helped Levi a lot!

    Our boy is nine and recently diagnosed (Oct. 2013). Sorry about your little guy, he is so little to go through this. I feel your stress, live, breathe it 24/7. I have given up explaining it to people because they have no clue what we go through each day. We have a similar scale as you use. It's a time saver. God bless and yes, hope, pray, believe there will be a cure. Someday.

    I was diagnosed with T1D when I was 3 years old. I'm now 35. I had my share with ups and downs lots of difficulties through these years, but I can say now that I have mastered it and I'm thriving. It's a difficult road to walk but once you get to the right path you can do anything. Stay strong and healthy. Lot's of love from Greece.

    I watched this with my 3 year old, and tried explaining it to her. I think it's important that she is exposed to different situations other than what she is used to. She is going to have her finger poked today to check her iron. And Henry is a great example of a brave little boy to show her. I told her that she only has to have it done once in a while, and Henry has it done multiple times every single day and look how amazing he is. Thank you for sharing Amy.

    was diagnosed type 2 diabetes 3 years ago at age 34. it's been a learning experience what to eat and what not to eat. I used to love bandanas but even one will spike my sugars to 300+. vegetables, salad's, beans, cheeses, nuts, Greek light & fit yogurt, sugar free oatmeal, any meats etc all good stuff. My average BS is 85-115.

    You are doing an awesome job as a mom! I teach diabetes education and I plan on showing this to my students so they can get an appreciation of "a day in the life". One thing I typically teach is to only subtract fiber grams if there is 5 grams or more in a serving and then you subtract 1/2 of those fiber grams.

    I have been bombarded with comments like this since I posted videos about this a year ago. Yes, I do know that fruit is high in sugar but I think people forget that he is three years old. We don't restrict his diet. We were told that we don't need to. We feed him a well balanced diet. His numbers change all the time. Last week we dealt with constant lows and his diet didn't change. Carbs are important for a growing child too. He can be 85 when he goes to bed and 400 at 3am due to growth hormome

    When he gets older he’ll know how to calculate insulin and things like soda and pizza etc. plus him being skinny will be good as well. I don’t really count my carbs but my blood sugars are usually 90 to 130 although when his sugar is high it’s best to give him insulin and wait about an hour and then let him eat so he’s had time to come down

  • @stunthumb
    @stunthumb 10 років тому +16

    Consider this.
    Your doctors told you to measure and weigh and be so exact, because that makes their job so much easier. I'm a type 1, and seriously I would never count carbs like this. You are entitled to have a life, and your son will learn to cope with it better than you, and your scales ever could. He'll know when his blood sugar is getting low, he'll know how hungry he feels and what he thinks he should take, eat, drink.
    You said yourself, this is the rest of his life, and if the rest of his life is measuring before every meal, plus 4 injections per day, plus a math exam, well it'll get depressing. I can see a pump in his future, and that's not a bad thing - every type 1 I know with a pump is in better control compared to 2 and 4 daily injections.
    No offense, but your being a typical parent of a Diabetic. It's horrible that your child has to put up with all this and I hope that damn soon we'll have better options. As you said, this is the rest of his life... you need to dial back the number of tests you do, and you need to ask your son how he's feeling, and he needs to understand the signs so he can tell you. Humans are not computers - you can't put such fine control onto a kids diet, and you shouldn't. What if he doesn't eat his lunch, what if he vomits, what if he gets into the emergency candy?
    Consider that maybe his diet should change to suit the results you want. Like, rather than trying to mathematically calculate exactly how much insulin etc, average each meal over a week, and try to get the insulin injections into a routine. It makes no sense to treat weekends as weekdays with this, weekends are more like holidays. If your son has high blood sugar, he can excercise or play to bring it down, that's far healthier than increasing insulin doses. If his blood sugar goes too low, then give him some fruit.
    You and your son will develop a language for how he's feeling, it will get easier and he'll be managing his own blood sugar before you know it. Make it more fun, try and guess levels... if his blood sugar is good then celebrate, have fun with it - otherwise it can be very depressing.
    This is gonna sound harsh I know, but it comes from a good place. You have all the hard stuff tackled, now you have to make that work for your son.

    • @nusirauk
      @nusirauk 10 років тому +5

      You are right for most of the points, but for one statement you are wrong. You can't exercise if your sugar is 17, because if it is high and you exercise, it will get even higher. Different people have different limits of when they sugars are rising when exercising. However, I agree that children are more confident when they are getting bigger (and having more experience at controlling diabetes) and they can live more flexible. For example I don't count my carbs (I am 27 and got it when I was 10), I just know it by heart and know how much insulin I need to inject. But if you don't count at the beginning, you will not know it by heart. So that is why I think that counting your carbs at the beginning (of having diabetes) is a really useful thing.

    • @stunthumb
      @stunthumb 10 років тому +1

      Tech House Progressive
      I think it's easy to forget how much of it is instinct and experience - it's difficult to imagine how it is for such a young kid to deal with let alone understand. I'm not sure why, but when my glucose is high I feel like I have to work it off rather than taking more insulin, I'm always concerned that I take more insulin then my glucose drops back down too far.
      I completely agree of course - you have to start out counting carbs so you can better understand Diabetes and your metabolism, but moving onto a healthy routine that doesn't require so much counting is always a good idea.

    • @dogheart443
      @dogheart443 10 років тому +2

      39 and 1/2 years now with type 1 - been through it - a lot of people say a lot of things, a lot of doctors too. Tools, techniques, and devices are all necessary and useful, to a point. Much is overrated, to put it mildly. Some of the advice out there, including from doctors, is just plain bad. Been there, death bed and back, many times, lucky to have made it, fortunate to have learned. One must keep an open mind for new options, to learn, to paying attention, rather than closing oneself off from gaining new insight. Boiling all down becomes simple; less is more.. good luck to all of you out there!

    • @kimisorensen4974
      @kimisorensen4974 6 років тому +2

      stunthumb I completely agree with you. But we have to cut her some slack. Yes if you don’t take insulin it could be a life or death situation. But yes I think she’s being a bit of a helicopter parent. When her son was 7 he still couldn’t figure out when he felt low. Honestly I think she needs to give him a lot more of the responsibility now that he’s older and still watch and be close enough in case he encounters a problem but far enough away so he knows how to take care of himself.

    Great video, you out in a lot of effort to keep him safe. I was diagnosed with T1 two weeks ago and I was told I don't have to measure anything I eat but to just play around with my insulin doses. It's working so far but my sugars can definitely improve. I noticed you have a carb reference sheet on your fridge, did you make that yourself or did you find it on a website? I'd definitely like to have one!

    We also use freestyle meter. Uses smallest sample. Only a miniscule tiny drop of blood needed. Less pain. We do not prebolus all the time. Our highest a1c was eight. Usually in 6 or 7s. Life quality is more important than anything.

    Hello, my lil bro was diagnosed 16 years ago, type1, at age 1. There is a 9 yr gap between us. You guys probably already know this, but your doing an awesome job!!!! You seem to have the theory and practice down pat, however the behaviors are harder to anticipate and deal with. If you have any question on how we dealt with anything please ask im happy to share. Also my mother is a nurse and i have been present to every class and nearly every doc visit

    I'm 14 years old and I'm also a Diabetic. I've been diagnosed for 6 years since 2008. Life with Diabetes is a daily battle for me, and I hate having it, but it is nice to see, there are alot of other people WHO has it in the same way. I hope they'll one day find a cure. Thank you for sharing :)

    I don't know if this will be helpful to you or not but, I've been a diabetic for about 9 years. I have an animas ping (and by the way it looks in the video he does too) :) but talk to your endo doctor and ask him/her about the Dexcom g4. This could be so helpful to y'all. Your insurance should cover most of it, but I'm not promising that. Just look it up here, on youtube, its awesome and you need have to worry if your little boy has a low will sleeping again. It's lifesaving! I hope this will help y'all.

    My teacher has seven kids and one of them, named Caleb, has type 1. He's 10 years old I think. She is my homeroom teacher, Bible teacher, and history teacher. She always shares with us about what's going on all the time with him. She shows us videos of type one diabetes and I take a lot of interest in it. Caleb does so well with it! The other day he was at 39!!! He was rushed to the E.R and it was very scary!

    Does he ever eat meat, fish, eggs, cheese? At least in this video I've mostly seen pretty carb-heavy foods, which I myself would only eat very sparingly (for different reasons though). Lots of fruit, bread, pasta, rice...

    Great Video- Henry is such a good little man and you and your husband seem to work very well together that is a great accomplishment too- Been there- done that- it will be 12 years for us on the 29th. We actually now eyeball most of what our daughter eats and so that makes it a bit easier but your video and your daily carb counts reminds me of how it used to be- too long ago... I wish you all the best - and keep praying for a cure.

    I was diagnosed at the age of 2 years old I'm turning 16 in a few days. Not saying what your doing is wrong everyone has their own methods.I never weighed my food though just counted the carbohydrates & used a ratio a divided that by the carbs to figure of how much insulin to take.

  • @LilySticha22
    @LilySticha22 9 років тому +2

    may I ask why did you subtract dietary fiber from the carbs? I have had type 1 diabetes for 2 years and never done that.... not judging you or saying its wrong... just wondering why?

    • @dreamflight6000
      @dreamflight6000  9 років тому

      That's just how the diabetes educators taught us when Henry was diagnosed. We actually recently switched clinics and they also teach to subtract fiber. My good friend from a England doesn't do it either. Must just be who's teaching? Not sure. 😊

    I have a t1 diabetic that was diagnosed when he was 4. He enjoyed watching Henry. His name is John. I have been on an endless search for best diet for our little guy.It is a myth that they need carbs (I didn't even know what a carb was when he was diagnosed). Our body can manufacture carbs from fats and protein. We have recently read primal body/primal mind and Dr. Bernstein. Healthesolutions is also helpful. Good luck-it's a life changer like you said!

    What type of insulin pump does he use? I am a type 1 diabetic and have been since I was 12. I use the Omnipod which is also wireless. It uses freestyle test strips that is built into the pdm (personal diabetes manager). I would recommend this pump to anyone. Good luck to you and your family.
