I only just found your videos Dana and I am hooked! I love that each piece is pretty simple to make. After watching the cushion cover vdo, I went ahead a recovered all of my cushions!!! Brilliant. Now I am keen to grab some fabrics and make a blanket or two!! thanks so much...... I also love how fun and natural you are..... its a real pleasure to spend time with you.
It's been so many years since I've sewn on a sewing machine. Back in the 80s and 90s I used to sew all the time. I made my kids summer outfits I made my twins bumper pad for their crib their comforters. I really want to get another sewing machine again you've inspired me ❤
Awww thanks! And yes, you should give sewing another whirl! Lately I've gotten into quilting, which I've really been loving. It's been a fun change from stuff I used to sew more of. Thanks Gina! - Dana
@texasgina, I’ll help enable-go for it! 😊 I “restarted” a couple of years ago, and I never realized how much I missed sewing!! Like Dana, I also started my first quilt (in my 60’s) and got hooked. The blocks are fairly quick to make (instant gratification, yay!), and the quilts become creative, useful works of art. I also got into many little fun projects for gifts and the home such as zipper bags, tote bags, aprons, curtains, pillows, easy jackets/kimonos, fleece blankets(!), as well as upcycling and recycling clothing and vintage tablecloths. Dana has soo many great videos, and it’s partly her fault that I got back into sewing (those zipper bags!!). The hubba even bought me a new Babylock Brilliant, just like the one Dana was using. It’s a fabulous machine that I drooled over, but would never justify spending that kind of money on one. It’s worth every penny!! Now I’m not getting anything else done besides sewing! 😄 The useful items and clothing can help the machine pay for itself. Much better than the vintage Janome machine I’d been using (paid $3.00 in a garage sale for it because “it didn’t run.” Cleaned it, oiled it, new needle, threaded it correctly-yup, they had it threaded incorrectly-and the thing is a beast. I think it could sew through wood, lol!). But I really love my Brilliant’s bells and whistles, especially the self threading feature. My bifocals don’t like trying to thread a needle, unfortunately. 🤓
Hi Dana - I make blankets like this a lot. Usually don’t add batting but it would be ok to add. I learned to make the pillows from one of your videos several years ago. Best way ever to make pillows. Love making blankets like this. 💕🧵
Yay! More more more videos! We missed you! I am a total beginner to sewing and your videos seem to “click” for me. You just make sense. Please keep it up!
Thanks so much for this! I'm a very new sewist and wanted to make a cozy mat for my cat out of fleece, flannel, and batting to go on top of a shelf she always lays on, but wasn't sure how the layers needed to be placed before turning right side out. This was a perfect and easy tutorial and the bed turned out beautifully!
In Australia, women used to make layered blankets like this and they were called Waggas. If the weather got cold you just inserted more fill. They were cosy and what I would class as the first doona with cover. Kids loved them. Some were just beautiful and would last for decades.
I have made blankets like this for the g.kids' Christmas presents. I do a teeny stitch with embroidery floss, randomly spaced, to keep the layers from separating. You're right, they are so cozy!
My mother's birthday is coming up, and this would be the perfect project for her gift. We have a camp in the Adirondack Mountains, and the only source of heat they have is a fireplace. Thanks for posting all the videos. You make learning how to sew so easy
I have made a ton of these for the house and as gifts. I do 2 yards for the front and 2 for the back for adult size. I live in the south, so no batting. I do a 1 1/2 yards for the front and 1 1/2 yards for the back for infants / toddlers. I use the triple zig zag stitch or the curve stitch on my Crescendo for top stitching the edge, and it makes a beautiful blanket.
I call these inside out blankets. I’ve made tons o them over the years. I usually use high loft type batting which can be ruff but there really fluffy. I like to put about 6-8 tack spots on mine just to keep the batting from shifting when washing. I love envelope pillow case too their so easy and fun
Instead of batting you could use an old wool blanket. Can get aome that are pretty thin. Then you dont have to worry about the batting falling apart and you can reuse an itchy wool blanket. Nice and toasty.
Actually I don't have a normal sewing machine 😔 but I have a handheld sewing machine which is AWESOME. I think I will be able to stitch a blanket with it 😅
I'd be worried about the batting coming loose and crumpling inside ,especially with a lot of use and washes, without at least some basic lines quilted in. Batting isn't meant to be used without being quilted in. The distance you need to sew will be different for each type and brand, but at least a couple inches apart both directions will be needed. If you don't want to quilt it, if just add a layer of heavy polar fleece inside instead.
ok, so all three pieces that you sewed together is not tied down or sewed down. I mean, do the materials slide around without being tied down? Do you suggest such? Or do the four sewed sides hold your cute blanket well?
Thank you so much! They are both synthetic fleece-y type blankets...but not traditional "fleece". The plaid one is technically a knit, with a bit of stretch to it. And then pink one is a synthetic cashemere (so soft!) I just use a standard sewing needle on both of these!
I think I speak for all of us that you are spoiling us with all these new videos. ❤

Dana, when you come to visit us in Scotland you'll need to call that fabric Tartan.

I love making those pillow cases, because my pillows don't fall out 😂❤❤

I'm pretty new to your channel but almost every single day I wear my hair up in a bun on my head just like you lol

I was thinking this too.
I agree and this style blanket would look super cute being tied.
She can tack all layers together w/yarn or embroidery floss to prevent bunching after washing😮😢😮😢been der…done dat.😮😢😮
What other than batting could be used ??
Hi I'm new to your channel ❤❤❤
Girl, you post like I do. Nothing for the longest time and then BAM just a ton of stuff 😂
😂
Hi Dana, can you put a link for the batting that you used? Thank you.
ok, so all three pieces that you sewed together is not tied down or sewed down. I mean, do the materials slide around without being tied down? Do you suggest such? Or do the four sewed sides hold your cute blanket well?
Are both of these materials fleece? Also, what needle do I use? Love it and love your videos!!

Could you not use a serger on the blanket too?
Sure! You can use a serger also! Many people don't have one, but both will work.
A walking foot would have made sewing the 3 layers much easier and faster.
😉😁⛄️🥑🍖🥘🍳
