A lesson in forgetting your expectations | A retrospective look at Road Trip Adventure

  • Road Trip Adventure is a 2002 PS2 game which on the surface could easily seem to be aimed virtually completely at younger players. From the cartoonish colour palette, to its deliberately caricatured art style, to its happy-go-lucky soundtrack, it is almost certainly a game which many older driving game fans doubtless passed over without a second thought...
But the reality of this refreshingly wholesome little (or rather large in this case) open world game is something rewardingly different: A car-based RPG which on the one hand certainly does keep things simple - and is all the better for it. But on the other hand offers one-chance dialogue options, surprisingly deep-cut real world vehicle models such as the Toyota AE86 and Mazda 787B, useful and over the top tuning parts, and even surprisingly unforgiving aspects of gameplay, from running out of fuel to actual racing.
So let's take a walk down memory lane for a retrospective look and review of Road Trip Adventure!

Just being able to free roam in a car game back then was a great feeling. Either this was a hidden gem or a forgotten classic. This game was enjoyable and it felt like i was driving in a fantasy world. A game feeling like an actual game with ''no limits'' is always enjoyable from time to time. This was around the time i spent countless hours on Nfs hot pursuit 2 (ps2), one of my favourite nfs of all time.

One of my most magical childhood memories : Taking a long drive through the ocean late one in-game night, listening to “the minute” by push kings on my radio. Suddenly the sea floor starts to gradually rise and I’m driving up onto a beautiful tropical island illuminated by the sunrise. It was such an awesome surprise.

One of my all time favorite cult-classic PS2 games, and in an annoying way, one of my most proud gaming experiences due to how obscure it is. I have struggled for YEARS with trying to properly describe the way that this game's open world completely captured me in a way that has never been replicated. Even though the "main" areas of the open world are essentially just set dressings on one big loop around the map, it never feels that way. There's so much to discover by just driving off of that "loop", and the game is designed so well that it naturally encourages you to just "go off-road" at some point. The dialog with all of the different characters never feels redundant and boring. Some interactions might be short and lead to nothing, but it ALWAYS feels like you're meeting a real person in a way. Funny enough one of my other favorite PS2 games is Seek And Destroy, which has the same publisher and is also a ChorroQ game, but it's an action adventure game where everyone is a tank. It's like an Ace Combat style campaign with cartoonish tanks with TONS of customization, upgrades, and definitely a lot of character. Both games will forever hold an important place in my heart.

I never in my life thought I'd see a review on this game.
Grew up playing every racing game imaginable, but this is one that me and my best friend will bring up out of nowhere and talk about how great it was.
I think I got the game around mid 2000s from my Gram, since her place was the afterschool spot (and right next door to my best friend, worked perfectly) and I'm fairly sure we'd choose this over GTA, NFS, Gran Turismo, you name it.
My overall review of it was it was so simple, you couldn't get upset with it, but at the same time, anybody (non car people) could pick it up and play it cause it had a story and the map was huge.
I'm gonna need to find this game and a functioning PS2. This brought back so many great memories

I think Choro Q games back in the childhood had fired up our expectations towards racing games now, back in the days we don't really enjoy the realistic driving physics but Choro Q physics filled that void. Also they subtly providing so much car information that burns into our brains, and collecting all the bodies and chassis making our own builds out of it is way beyond our expectations back in the days.
We do expect modern games give us more challenging races / quests, creativity tuning for different quests, larger maps / more tracks, and not as hard as F money earning methods like what Choro Q series gave us.

As a gamer who's bad at and doesn't like driving games overall, I must say I LOVED this game. The map is so big, that even if you landed in an area you shouldn't be, like on top of the tree line, it still has collision detection up there, so you can literally go anywhere you want. There's not many racing games out there, that have alongside the races, 100 pictures to collect in your photo album, 100 coins to find, mini games, 7 hidden Gemstones, quests, upgrades and collectables to earn. This game was worth every penny. I even lent it to my friend's brother and he cursed my name for a week as I made him addicted to it XD

Having speedran this game for thousands of hours I can assure you that it is worth your time! I have to agree that it teaches you to subvert your expectations because now as an adult, I can play any game in a modern era without distaste due simply to how it looks or feels. Some fun facts about the game: Any% WR is now 12:12 by AtomicClon. We skip the WHOLE ENTIRE GP by using a reverse momentum text glitch with the gate and guard at the gate. Also, the MIDI music was stolen from a composer based in the US and the composer himself just found out last year. Its got quite the story for such a wonky "CarPG".

My first exposure to this game was when I first got a PS2 for Christmas and it came packed with a selection of budget Japanese titles, renamed for Western appeal, this included Fighting Fury (a Baki the Grappler fighter), Seek and Destroy (a military tank game spin off from the main ChoroQ series which RTA is based off) Robot Warlords (I think it's called Operation Velvet in Japan) and Lake Masters EX.
I honestly spent days playing the game and having fun discovering new things that I still kept playing even after I got more quality games like WWE HCTP and such.

I'm going to paint a picture... imagine- it's your third grade birthday party. You are at a Lazer Tag facility and your mom just showed up with the Costco pizza after a few rounds of blasting your friends and you're drenched in sweat. You power through your pizza so you are able to open your presents in front of your friends. Well, that was me. One of my best friends, hands me a gift and I can already tell its a PS2 game. I'm stoked. I open it up- and it still has the Toys R Us bargain bin sticker on it. I'm not going to lie- at first I was dissapointed. I didn't have high expectations for a game I always overlooked at all bargain bins. Since that day I have most likely put 100s of hours into it- and is a core childhood memory. The other day, I was cleaning through my PS2 games and found two copies- and unfortunately the PS2 no longer boots. I just ordered a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro to solely play this.
Thank you so much for bringing this back to me.

I think for me my racing game that subverted my expectations in my childhood is 2008's FUEL. Just to show how different our interests in when one person is into dark, graphic and thrilling media, gets surprised by a cartoony and beginner friendly product, and the other literally has vice versa.
But yeah despite it's negative reputation, I ended up loving how alone you felt in one of the largest maps in any video game. I really want to know how large exactly RTA's map is just to compare that game and FUEL's.

I've always loved racing games, I played plenty before I picked this game up as a kid, and I have played many since then. Though where some peoples first RPG was Final fantasy, Morrowind, Kotor, ect, mine was Road Trip. While it was simple, i seriously enjoyed and spent a lot of time in this game as a kid. Its interesting to see how my current interests stem from this as now so much of my time is spent playing other Racing games and RPGs (fallout, cyberpunk, ect). I cant see ourselfs ever getting another Car JRPG style game again as we are far from the old ps2 era of gaming sadly. Though i do still enjoy coming back to this game every few years.

this was a formative game for me.
i bought the game expecting it to be like rumble racing bc of the us cover. while initially put off by the very poor performance of the stock performance, i was completely charmed by the sd look, over-world map, and the npcs. It racing rpg pilled me.
I later find out that it's a series thanks to seeing a ChoroQ in PSM, which shared the name of the coins in the game. I was also collecting the toys bc of the series. These things were marketed in the west for their penny gimmick when their actual appeal is seeing your fave cars with these SD proportions that still have a surprising amount of detail still packed in.

As someone who played most of the games in the series recently, i think that game really feels too different for my taste. I dont know to describe it but after coming from the PS1 and GBA games this is like a departure of the series, which is fine because the series did get a lot varied especially in their spinoffs, but not in the mainline games.
I guess if you are more of a realistic car lover you would like this game more than the others, but not me. It doesnt have the same charm as previous or newer games. Graphically its also very bland, Wonderful did look a ton better and that was on the PS1.

Oh wow, I have this game and still play it, it was always so entertaining and the music was amazing, the variety of the tracks were brilliant, you could go from inside a japanese temple to a snowy mountain to a tropical island and so much more, I can't believe people still play this, an the stamps and mini games added so much to the game, I remember I found it so creepy driving on the highway from Fuji town (I think it's called) to sandpolis at night lol, the open world was massive and big respect to the game for that but alot of the places that aren't proper locations you can teleport to are very bland but the game is old and the playstation 2 probably didn't have the power and the hardware to make a detailed open world. The racing is good but the ai having a set speed to eachother kinda ruined the racing a bit for me but I still liked it, I remember Diez in the GT40 being the hardest to beat followed by Peo in his testarosso and I remember there would be a garbage truck always in last play which I found funny, I can't remember the name of it though, so all in all I would rate this game an 8/10, I wouldn't say it holds up to good today but you can still have a good time with it.

This is one of the jankiest, silliest, most fun games I've ever played. In no other game can you play as a jet powered ladybird with monster truck wheels earning money by being sponsored by a coconut shop, not even the sequels could do that.

I just watched your Jaguar Blackjag Video, It actually is for sale in Germany right now😂 For 20K tho as it's not a working prototype... But I remember reading everywhere it actually had a V10, I'm so confused

Wow that's cool. Not sure what the story is there, maybe the XF10 version had the engine and the BlackJag was a show shell? Could've been something like that, or even multiple versions

There are so many thing to mention about this game. I would say the driving is pretty bad. I don't think I'm the only one who use the jetpack against the wall. Though you do progress and become a better driver.m since you can't do it all the time.
The game is generous in so many other ways. City building, car customisation, collectible, achievements, random hidden stuff (hello aliens),minigames too much to list.
